Caterham, England. February 17, 2014. Lorin LaFave was at a loss. Her 14-year-old son, Breck, hadn't been himself for a while. It all began when he joined an online gaming club, headed by Lewis Daynes, an 18-year-old unemployed computer engineer. Daynes's influence on Breck was powerful - he began skipping activities he once enjoyed, he isolated himself from his family and friends, he was constantly irritated and argumentative.Lorin did everything she could to put an end to the friendship. She installed parental controls on their home computers and tried to ban Breck from using Daynes's server. She even called the police, fearing that Breck was being groomed by Daynes. But her efforts were in vain. Those who had the power to help Breck failed to do so, and the consequences were devastating.Instagram: @talkmurderwithmeFacebook: @talkmurrderwithmeSupport me by buying me a coffee ☕Learn more about what The Breck Foundation is doing to keep young people safe online. You can find sources for this episode here.Music from Purple Planet MusicSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/talk-murder-with-me/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Colorado Springs, Colorado. June 11, 2022. 17-year-old Riley Whitelaw reported her 28-year-old coworker, Joshua Johnson, to her manager at Walgreens. Johnson had been making advances unwanted towards Riley, which were making her seriously uncomfortable at work. This wasn't the first time she had made a report about him either. She asked for her schedule to be changed so that she would no longer have to work with Johnson. But when she asked for extra hours, her manager told her that this would mean crossing paths with Johnson.Three weeks later, she was found murdered in the break room at work. This case is currently ongoing. Joshua Johnson had a preliminary hearing on September 16, in which detectives working the case testified that no one other than Johnson could be responsible for Riley's murder.A judge ruled the evidence given at the hearing sufficient for Johnson to go to trial. His arraignment is scheduled for Nov 15, where he will plead guilty or not guilty.I'll post any updates on my Instagram. The Murder of Riley Whitelaw (my blog post on this case)Instagram: @talkmurderwithmeFacebook: @talkmurrderwithmeSupport me by buying me a coffee ☕SourcesGoFundMe Page - In Loving Memory - Riley Riley Whitelaw ObituaryPreliminary hearing for suspect in Colorado Springs Walgreens homicideArrest papers: Teen found dead at Colorado Springs Walgreens allegedly had concerns about suspect since last yearTeenage Walgreens employee in Colorado Springs reported coworker before she was found dead in breakroomA Walgreens Employee Was Accused Of Killing A Teenage Coworker Who Had Rejected His AdvancesDocs: Teen asked not to work with coworker facing charges for her murder at WalgreensJoshua Johnson charged with first-degree murder in killing of teen co-worker at Walgreens‘There Was Blood Everywhere': Walgreens Employee Charged with Killing Teen Co-Worker Who Told Management His ‘Advances' Made Her ‘Uncomfortable'Riley Whitelaw funeral service scheduled in Colorado SpringsTeen employee killed inside Walgreens in Colorado Springs was stabbed more than 40 timesAutopsy report reveals horrific new information on murder of teen at Colorado Springs WalgreensLabor attorney raises concerns about handling of complaint before murder at Colorado Springs WalgreensLabor attorney weighs in on girl allegedly murdered by coworker in Colorado Springs WalgreensMan Allegedly Killed Teen Walgreens Coworker Who'd Rejected His AdvancesMusic from Purple Planet MusicSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/talk-murder-with-me/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Cheshire, Connecticut. July 23, 2007. Cheshire has pretty much everything you'd want if you were looking for a quiet, peaceful place to raise a family. The houses are spacious, the lawns are well-manicured and leafy trees line the streets. But what's most attractive about Cheshire is that it's safe. At least, that's what Bill and Jennifer Petit thought - it seemed like the perfect place to raise their two daughters, Hayley and Michaela. And it was, until one night in late July 2007 when all hell broke loose. What Joshua Komisarjevsky and Steven Hayes insisted was only going to be a home burglary, escalated into a frenzy of violence and ultimately, murder. What spurred the two men to carry out such heinous acts? Albuquerque, New Mexico. August 23, 2016. When Victoria Martens stepped off the school bus that Tuesday, her mother, Michelle, should have been waiting for her. But there was no sign of her, so Victoria made her own way home. It was Victoria's 10th birthday, so she was probably anticipating presents and cake, as any 10 year old would. For Victoria, however, the last year had been pretty terrible. Michelle, while she loved her daughter, wasn't very good at putting her first. She had a way of getting involved with bad people. They exploited Michelle's vulnerability and trusting nature and then they turned to Victoria. Michelle had called social services five separate times that year to report incidents involving her boyfriends. But on this particular day, Victoria's life turned into a living hell; one she did not make it out of alive. Michelle's new boyfriend, Fabian Gonzales, and his cousin, Jessica Kelley, should never have been allowed in Michelle's home, especially with her kids around. Both Kelley and Gonzalez had been in and out of prison for years. Not to mention they both had a fondness for meth. What happened to Victoria was pure evil. It's especially devastating how so many calls for help went unanswered. The Murder of Victoria Martens (my blog post on this case)Instagram: @talkmurderwithmeFacebook: @talkmurrderwithmeSupport me by buying me a coffee ☕Sources for this episode:Report: Suspect in N.M. girl's gruesome slaying should have been under supervisionDocuments reveal new details surrounding Victoria Martens' deathJustice for Victoria: Where the case stands nowOPINION | Editorial: False confessions mean we need an outside look at APD's Vigil, Martens homicide investigationsForensic psychiatrist gives insight into Michelle Martens' false statementsFour years after 10-year-old girl is killed, questions lingerUPDATE: Jessica Kelley accepts plea deal in death of Victoria MartensCYFD received 5 calls about the Martens family before Victoria was killedGrandparents open up about Victoria Martens' momBombshell plea deal, murder charges dropped in Victoria Martens' caseA shocker in Victoria Martens case » Albuquerque JournalJessica Kelley admits to setting girl on fire after she was killedThe Victoria Martens Case: 'We want to make it right for this little girl'Details emerge in search for 4th Martens suspectProsecutors: 'Gang ties are the reason Victoria Martens was killed'NM struggles with child neglect, abuse » Albuquerque JournalExpert: Martens' statements were 'contaminated' » Albuquerque JournalSuspect on trial in Victoria Martens case asks to be releasedCivil suit filed by Victoria Martens' grandparents dismissedHundreds gather to remember Victoria Martens at public memorial serviceTimeline of investigation » Albuquerque JournalBirthday memorial held for New Mexico girl who was raped, killedFabian Gonzales released from jailCommunity remembers life of Victoria MartensSuspect in Victoria Martens case to be sentenced next month | KOB 4New report: NM among nation's worst in child abuse, maltreatment - Albuquerque JournalMusic from Purple Planet MusicSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/talk-murder-with-me/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Farmville, Virginia. September 12, 2009. Emma Niederbrock was very excited to attend "Strictly for the Wicked", a music festival in Southgate, Michigan. The lineup for the festival included many of her favorite horrorcore rappers. She and her best friend, Melanie Wells, had gone to several similar events in the past and always enjoyed themselves. But this time was even more exciting, as Emma would be meeting Sam McCroskey (an amateur horrorcore rapper who went by "Syko Sam") in-person for the first time. The two had been talking online and on the phone for about a year at this point. Sam viewed Emma as his girlfriend, even though they had never met face-to-face. But when Emma finally set eyes on Sam in the flesh, she was seriously underwhelmed. Perris, California. January 14, 2018. Few cases are as chilling as that of the Turpin family. Regardless of where you live, you likely remember this story dominating national, and even international news, in January 2018. The photos splashed across our television screens were designed to project an image of a big, happy family. But something just feels off about the photos, something you can't immediately put your finger on. The reality could not have been further from what parents David and Louise Turpin, were attempting to convey in those photos. When the story broke of what was really going on behind closed doors in their southern California home, those who got the impression that something just wasn't quite right had their feelings confirmed. It was all a charade, put on to mask the reality of how depraved human beings can be. While this case is not one of murder, I would certainly classify it as true crime.Instagram: @talkmurderwithmeFacebook: @talkmurrderwithmeBuy Me A Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/talkmurderI highly recommend the novel Girl A by Abigail Dean, which is loosely based on this case.Episode sources:Turpin case - WikipediaLouise Turpin's Sister Talks Childhood Before House of Horrors | PEOPLE.comHouse of Horrors Aunt Opens Up About Louise Turpin's PastCalifornia couple accused of torturing their children had North Texas tiesInside the Texas home where the malnourished, shackled siblings lived over 18 years agoTurpin case: Shackled California siblings 'victims of torture'Turpin: Shackled siblings found in Perris, California homeTurpin case: California couple deny torturing 'shackled siblings'California family: Parents charged after children found shackled13 captive siblings forced to shower once a year, strangled, subject to frequent beatings: Prosecutor13 siblings, some shackled and malnourished, rescued from California houseBefore police rescued their 13 children, the two parents had a history of strange behavior, family and neighbors sayAunts of 13 captive children reveal years of secrecy and concernsAirfares, fancy clothes and lavish meals: How the Turpins kept their evil secretCalifornia torture house: Louise Turpin's sister said sibling experimented with religion, sexGrandparents say 'God called' on Perris couple to have so many childrenDavid and Louise Turpin case: A timeline of parental torture and abusePerris parents, accused of torturing 13 kids, dreamed of a reality show about their family, reports sayDavid Turpin's Sister-in-Law Says He Would Watch Her in the Shower, Wouldn't Let Her Contact KidsSouthern California torture case: Outline of accusations against Turpin parentsCaptive teen's chilling 911 call details parents' alleged torture: 'My two little sisters right now are chained up''I've never been out': Chilling 911 call reveals abuse in Turpin familyTurpin siblings: Judge bars parents from contacting 13 children in torture caseTurpin parents sentenced to life in prison for torturing childrenTurpin children speak out as parents are sentenced in torture case: 'I'm taking my life back'Eldest Turpin Children Discharged from Hospital in What Attorney Describes as 'Birth Into Real World'Turpin children 'working toward forgiveness' of parents in California torture caseCan anyone open a school at home in California?California torture case raises questions about home school regulationThe Twisted Psychology Behind the Turpin Family CaseAs a forensic psychologist, this is why I think the Turpins may have held their children captiveInside Turpin family's Disney trips: kids wore same outfits each time | World | News | Express.co.ukDavid Turpin charged with 8 counts of perjuryTurpin trial: Couple jailed for life for 'inhuman' child abuseThe Quiverfull: The evangelical Christians opposed to contraceptionMusic from Purple Planet MusicSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/talk-murder-with-me/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Stanford, California. October 13, 1974. There weren't many places in Stanford that Arlis Perry felt at home. She had just moved from Bismarck, North Dakota, with her new husband, Bruce Perry, who was studying at Stanford. The iconic Stanford Memorial Church, however, was Arlis's safe place. It was somewhere she could go whenever she was feeling lonely or homesick. Naturally, it was where she went on the night of October 12, 1974, after an argument with Bruce. Nobody could have foreseen the horrors Arlis would endure that night in the place she felt most at peace. Was there a Satanic motivation behind Arlis's murder? Or was she just in the wrong place at the wrong time?Stanford was no stranger to brutal slayings of young women. This episode will also look at the murders of Leslie Perlov and Janet Taylor, who were murdered in 1973 and 1974, respectively.
