Defending British interestsHilary Benn is the 25th British Secretary of State since the Conservative government of Ted Heath scrapped the Stormont Parliament in 1972. Whitelaw was the first. I met him during the London talks in July that year. There was then a gap of 23 years before I met another British Secretary of State, Patrick Mayhew. I have met most of the rest since then. The 25 were a mixed bunch both in ability and in temperament. Most we had never heard of before they were given the job. Many we never heard of again after they left here. A few were friendly. Some, like Roy Mason, were wannabe generals or spymasters who bought enthusiastically into the counter-insurgency strategies of the spooks, Brit military and RUC. Some, like Merlyn Rees, were bumblers who hadn't a clue about the North and probably didn't care, and some were or thought they were, clever and devious. Most of them suffered from delusions of grandeur. I used to call it the English disease but that is probably unfair. Not all English people believe they have the right to rule other countries. But whatever their personalities or politics they all had one thing in common – they were here to defend British national interests – whatever the cost. The battle for hearts and minds of UnionismMichelle O'Neill honoured her commitment to be a First Minister for All when she chose to take part in Sunday's remembrance day ceremony in Belfast. With the recent conclusion of the General Election in Britain and a lively debate between Biden & Trump where the nation watched two men well past the age of 70 arguing over who was the better golfer, we decided to look at golfing politicians over time.In stark contrast to the US, where almost all US Presidents play the game, the UK has a much thinner spread. We talk about A.J. In this episode, Kate sat down with our very own Jen Whitelaw, PR professional and former C-3 President. Jen first shares her career path from English studies to public relations and urban planning. She discusses a few of her favorite tools for reaching the public about important topics like density and sustainability through her work with organizations like C-3. Jen highlights some successful strategies for engaging diverse audiences, emphasizing the power of the public to influence how our city gets shaped. She explains why it's so important to engage the public and younger generations in advocacy work around land use issues and shaping San Diego's future, and discusses two documentary films that brought important conversations to the community. Timestamps: [2:33] How Jen's formative years living on Del Mar Mesa shaped her appreciation for conservation. [3:13] A glimpse at Jen's career history and the influence that Jen's mom's architectural career had on her own vision. [4:08] Jen's experience working at the San Diego Film Commission. [5:47] How Jen's interest in marketing and public relations originated. [7:24] Why Jen expanded her career path to urban planning and land planning, and the impact of interpreting and facilitating communication between the industry and the media. [9:23] A few of Jen's favorite tools to engage the public and community groups on land use issues. [11:41] The power of the public when it comes to advocacy. [14:31] How social media can facilitate conversation and action between the public and policymakers. [15:31] The City of Villages plan. [18:38] Was there a failure within San Diego to get the public on board? [20:26] The impetus for making “Designing for the Future” and how they distributed the film. [24:26] “San Diego Canyonlands”. [27:41] The importance of developing responsibly while keeping the San Diego charm. [29:03] Synthesizing the works for a modern audience. [30:05] How Jen discovered and became involved with C-3. [31:05] Who should C-3 be engaging in advocacy work? [33:27] Overcoming the obstacles and challenges of working with more diverse audiences. [35:11] The rise of public common spaces. [36:14] C-3's influence on the practice of urban planning and development in San Diego. [38:22] Adapting C-3's structure and programming to meet modern challenges. About C-3 Even before the California Coastal Commission or Environmental Protection Agency existed, Citizens Coordinate for Century 3 (C-3) was the environmental conscience of San Diego. Since that time, in part due to C-3's leadership in education, advocacy, and empowerment, a plethora of organizations have developed throughout San Diego County. These organizations specifically focus on promoting progressive values in architecture, urban design, land-use governance, natural resource management, sustainable economic development, climate change resilience, and social justice. As the field of allies has grown, C-3's role has evolved to provide a platform that promotes creating civic community. Opportunities for Advocacy and Engagement: C3sandiego.org Jen Whitelaw LinkedIn Quotes: “To be able to communicate effectively through writing, I can't emphasize it enough, for someone who wants to go into that field (PR), it's really, really important.” — Jen [7:09] “I think that curiosity has been a theme throughout my life. I really enjoy learning about things.” — Jen [8:46] “If you want to accomplish something, first, you need to make sure that people understand the subject.” — Jen [11:55] “Everyone wants to be heard. When people have a voice in something and feel like they're being heard and helping to shape something, they are almost inherently on board.” — Jen [12:45] “Fear is such a powerful motivator and unfortunately, there's not a lot of innovation that usually comes out of fear, it's more of a wall.” — Jen [19:30] “You've got to involve the younger generations because they're going to be the decision-makers coming up, and that's such a unique opportunity and a special opportunity.” — Jen [25:30] “There's power in not knowing what you can't do yet, and you surprise yourself because you just go and do it.” — Jen [32:43] “[C-3's] a really important platform for giving voice to voices that aren't always part of the discussion, and aren't always well funded.” — Jen [36:29]
Super excited to share my interview with the magical Ginny Whitelaw! Ginny describes her understanding of sacred feminine power beautifully and powerfully, reminding us of the developmental phases that humanity necessarily goes through, and shares about a pivotal - and frightening - experience that took place whilst working at NASA. Embarking on a deep inner journey of inner listening, Ginny learned to connect her feminine power and to marry the equally important qualities of the masculine and the feminine within her. Ginny also talks about the importance of martial arts in her life, the regenerative and life giving power of the hara and the breath as well as the concepts of Zen leadership and deep resilience that are so needed right now. There's so much here to reflect on - enjoy! Riley had been harassed by Joshua and had made complaints to management. For a time, the two worked different schedules. But, to get more hours, Riley had to be on the schedule with Johnson. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss Riley Whitelaw and her murderer, Joshua Johnson. Riley was put in a situation where she did not feel safe. Ultimately, that feeling proved correct when Joshua Johnson murdered Riley. This is a case that brings up many questions regarding how companies handle these types of situations. Many have levied that Walgreens did not do enough to protect Riley Whitelaw. What should they have done? You've either heard Woody Whitelaw on his national drive radio show ‘Will & Woody', or perhaps you've seen him on TV on The Celebrity Apprentice Australia or I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! What makes Woody so unique is that he manages to be hilarious and witty (eg asking Steph about her bowel movements and suggesting to coach her while she's on the loo), all while showing an incredibly vulnerable side, being extremely open and generous about his experiences with mental health, his relationships and work life. His other half, Will, was on the podcast not too long ago where he was also very open about his mental health and coping with depression (you can listen to that ep here), and in today's episode Woody speaks about how they navigate their friendship, how to be a lifeboat for those you love but also lean on them in times of need, and why having difficult conversations can be the best thing you can do. Among this chat, Steph and Laura share a recent hard conversation between the two of them that their husbands Josh and Dalton suggested they have.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

From Basel, Switzerland to the summer of love in San Francisco. What did we learn about LSD, and why did it fall out of favor in the US? Part 2 will explore what's next in research... Want to become more heart-centered? We invite you to join us on Deb's Dailies (daily blog and newsletter), a daily reflection on living and loving life as a heart-centered leader. From her first science job working in a high energy physics lab to learning how to work with energy in Aikido and Zen training, to her doctoral research in biophysics, Ginny Whitelaw has had a passion for bringing energy, mind, and body together. When she was a senior leader at NASA in charge of integrating the Space Station Program, she took several leadership courses, but was dissatisfied that their “head-only” approach ignored the body where enduring change occurs. It became clear that integrating science and the physical, energetic practices from the dojo into leadership development was her work to do. For more than 25 years, she has taught and coached whole leaders in top companies all over the world. But it wasn't until she founded the Institute for Zen Leadership in 2012 that she saw how much further she could take a self-selected group of leaders over the course of even a long weekend. How fulfilling to lift the wings of people already committed to making a positive difference! She'd found her life's work.Ginny Jiko Whitelaw Roshi is a Zen priest, teacher, and writer. She is the author of four books, including The Zen Leader and award-winning, Resonate: Zen and the Way of Making a Difference.Together with her psychologist husband, Mark Kiefaber, she developed the FEBI®, which measures four energy patterns in the nervous system that link mind, body, and behaviors, giving a view into the whole person that called her into this field from the start. She loves the stillness of meditation, the vibrancy of dance, and the feeling of being on the water and digging in the dirt.Connect with Ginny at:* https://www.linkedin.com/in/ginny-whitelaw-7089599/* https://www.instagram.com/ginnywhitelawizl/* https://www.facebook.com/ginny.whitelaw* https://twitter.com/GinnyWhitelaw* https://zenleader.global/ This is a public episode. Jonathan Whitelaw worked as a journalist in Scotland, covering sport, politics, and everything in between. He's recently moved to the wilderness of Canada, and we talk about the move, and keeping in touch with colleagues and editors half the world away. His newest novel is 'The Bingo Hall Detectives', which tells the story of Jason Brazel, an out of work journalist who tries to solve a local murder with his mother-in-law. We talk about the rise of cosy crime and why he wanted to write in the genre. You can hear how much he thinks through the puzzle aspects of the mystery, why he's too lazy to be a real plotter, and how the characters drag him away from the 2 page synopsis. This episode is sponsored by Marthe Jocelyn's new novel, 'The Seaside Corpse'. It's the fourth in the 'Aggie Morton Mystery Queen Series', inspired by Agatha Christie, and set in 1903 Lyme Regis, when a couple of friends discover a body while looking for Dinosaur bones. It's the perfect present for any kids you want to get engaged in reading.
