**Content warning: This week's episode contains discussion of a graphic crime that may be unsuitable for certain ages or hard to listen to. Listener discretion is advised. It's been six years since one of the most heinous crimes in Albuquerque. But finally now in 2022, a jury is hearing arguments in the case against the only person to go to trial for the death of 10-year-old Victoria Martens. This week on the podcast, we're taking a deeper look at the first week of Fabian Gonzales' trial. Gonzales is accused of placing Victoria Martens in a situation so dangerous that it led to her death. He faces nine counts, including reckless abuse of a child resulting in death, and several evidence tampering-related charges.  Chris and Gabby detail their respective experiences covering the case when it happened in August 2016. They also take listeners through a detailed history in the case, including the massive shift in charges in 2018. And finally, a recap of the testimony from the first week. What led to the young girl's death on her 10th birthday? What do we know about the ‘unknown man' who's said to have entered her apartment that day Victoria was killed? Some history: Police initially arrested three people in Victoria's murder. Victoria's mom, Michelle Martens; her boyfriend, Fabian Gonzales; and his cousin, Jessica Kelley. Both Martens and Kelley took plea deals and agreed to testify against Gonzales at his trial. To date, no one is charged with Victoria's murder.  We want to hear from you! Got an idea? Question? Albuquerque, New Mexico. August 23, 2016. When Victoria Martens stepped off the school bus that Tuesday, her mother, Michelle, should have been waiting for her. But there was no sign of her, so Victoria made her own way home. It was Victoria's 10th birthday, so she was probably anticipating presents and cake, as any 10 year old would. For Victoria, however, the last year had been pretty terrible. Michelle, while she loved her daughter, wasn't very good at putting her first. She had a way of getting involved with bad people. They exploited Michelle's vulnerability and trusting nature and then they turned to Victoria. Michelle had called social services five separate times that year to report incidents involving her boyfriends. But on this particular day, Victoria's life turned into a living hell; one she did not make it out of alive. Michelle's new boyfriend, Fabian Gonzales, and his cousin, Jessica Kelley, should never have been allowed in Michelle's home, especially with her kids around. Both Kelley and Gonzalez had been in and out of prison for years. Not to mention they both had a fondness for meth. What happened to Victoria was pure evil. It's especially devastating how so many calls for help went unanswered. The Murder of Victoria Martens (my blog post on this case)Instagram: @talkmurderwithmeFacebook: @talkmurrderwithmeSupport me by buying me a coffee ☕Sources for this episode:Report: Suspect in N.M. girl's gruesome slaying should have been under supervisionDocuments reveal new details surrounding Victoria Martens' deathJustice for Victoria: Where the case stands nowOPINION | Editorial: False confessions mean we need an outside look at APD's Vigil, Martens homicide investigationsForensic psychiatrist gives insight into Michelle Martens' false statementsFour years after 10-year-old girl is killed, questions lingerUPDATE: Jessica Kelley accepts plea deal in death of Victoria MartensCYFD received 5 calls about the Martens family before Victoria was killedGrandparents open up about Victoria Martens' momBombshell plea deal, murder charges dropped in Victoria Martens' caseA shocker in Victoria Martens case » Albuquerque JournalJessica Kelley admits to setting girl on fire after she was killedThe Victoria Martens Case: 'We want to make it right for this little girl'Details emerge in search for 4th Martens suspectProsecutors: 'Gang ties are the reason Victoria Martens was killed'NM struggles with child neglect, abuse » Albuquerque JournalExpert: Martens' statements were 'contaminated' » Albuquerque JournalSuspect on trial in Victoria Martens case asks to be releasedCivil suit filed by Victoria Martens' grandparents dismissedHundreds gather to remember Victoria Martens at public memorial serviceTimeline of investigation » Albuquerque JournalBirthday memorial held for New Mexico girl who was raped, killedFabian Gonzales released from jailCommunity remembers life of Victoria MartensSuspect in Victoria Martens case to be sentenced next month | KOB 4New report: NM among nation's worst in child abuse, maltreatment - Albuquerque JournalMusic from Purple Planet MusicSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/talk-murder-with-me/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

It isn't something that's one-and-done.    Today's episode is another episode in my six-part series of what it takes to build and sustain a school of excellence. I get to interview school leaders from across the nation to share the real, the raw, and the messy.    Tune in to hear Jessica Kelley, a Childcare Center Owner, and I talk about the cost of doing it all. Jessica takes her time to share about her company organization chart and the process that she went through to create her team. We talked about some of the hard moments in her family life where she was forced to make some really difficult decisions and how you can learn from them.     Through this series of Ordinary Moments, I hope that you will walk away with true insights into what it takes to lead an extraordinary center.    In a nutshell, we talk about:   What it means to carry the mental load of a director, but for someone else to carry out the execution. Some of the shifts that happened when Jessica realized certain tasks were taking too much of her time. Some of the ways in which Jessica's Center was running her life. How to unlearn the disease to please and create healthy boundaries. The guilt and grief phase of not being the person who “does it all”. How Jessica successfully transitioned from being the “doer” to being the “designer''.   … and so much more!   Resources and links mentioned in this episode: Watch the video interview of this episode: https://schoolsofexcellence.com/ordinary-moments The Summit of Excellence is a two-day in-person experience on March 1-2, 2022 in Boca, Florida. Learn how to master interpersonal dynamics, foster kindness, and establish your school as a beacon of light in your community. If you want to… Drive more impact in your community. Be inspired by a network of peers. Deliver higher quality care. Or build a team of leaders. Imagine your team… Doing and thinking “outside the box,” and trying new methods. Pushing out of their comfort zones without anxiety. Feeling a sense of community and connection at work. Treating conflict and change as an opportunity for growth.  … all so you can be equipped to tackle any challenging situation that comes your center's way. Let's be honest: To truly impact our kids and create a healthy, engaged, and successful next generation, we need to be better leaders.  And that requires real collaboration—moments where we come together to share our wisdom in order to create healthy, productive learning communities. On August 24, 2016, 10-year old Victoria Martens was murdered in her Albuquerque apartment. That night, three people were arrested in connection with the crime, including the girl's mother Michelle Martens, a woman named Jessica Kelley, and a man named Fabian Gonzales. Of those three, Gonzales is the only suspect who's case remains open and awaiting trial. However, nearly six years later, Gonzales is still waiting for his day in court as a jury trial has been delayed once again. What's taken so long? Can we expect a trial later this year? What are the complications that surround a trial for a crime that happened nearly six-years ago? How is the COVID-19 pandemic complicating the justice system? All three suspects pled not guilty in the state's court. On June 29, 2018, Michelle Martens pled guilty to one count of child abuse resulting in death. The same day, the Albuquerque Police Department announced a fourth unidentified male suspect was being sought in connection to the case based on DNA evidence recovered from the scene. Brianna Lopez This child abuse story is about a 5-month-old little girl named Brianna Lopez. On July 19, 2002 Baby Brianna passed away. Her father and uncle would toss her in the air and not catch her. They sexually assaulted her. Her uncle raped her. They bit her. Her mother threw her, bit her and pinched her. She was bruised and beaten. Her grandmother and another uncle knew about the abuse but didn't do anything. Brianna also had several broken bones. She had bleeding from the brain, broken ribs, bucket handle fractures, all signs of shaken baby syndrome. They beat and raped her time and time again. Her mother "fell asleep" while they killed Brianna. Baby Brianna's Law is a New Mexico law that gives a mandatory life sentence for intentional acts of child abuse and neglect that result in the death of a child under 12. Legislation by Rep. ... According to the Las Cruces Sun News, she says “Every child's life is precious and deserves to be valued equally.” Gabriel Fernandez (February 20, 2005 – May 24, 2013) was an eight-year-old boy from Palmdale, California who was abused and tortured over a period of months that ultimately ended in his fatal beating on May 22, 2013 which led to his death two days later. His mother, Pearl Fernandez, and her boyfriend, Isauro Aguirre, were both charged and convicted of first-degree murder with special circumstances of torture. Pearl Fernandez was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole and Isauro Aguirre was sentenced to death. Throughout Fernandez's eight month stay with his mother and Aguirre, multiple people reported signs of abuse to social workers with the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. However, Fernandez was never removed from the household. This led to several concerns over the effectiveness and efficiency of social services in Los Angeles County, and ultimately led to four social workers being criminally charged in Los Angeles Superior Court. Channon Gail Christian, aged 21, and Hugh Christopher Newsom Jr., aged 23, were from Knoxville, Tennessee. They were kidnapped on the evening of January 6, 2007, when Christian's vehicle was carjacked. The couple was taken to a rental house. Both of them were raped, tortured, and murdered. Four males and one female were arrested, charged, and convicted in the case. In 2007, a grand jury indicted Letalvis Darnell Cobbins, Lemaricus Devall Davidson, George Geovonni Thomas, and Vanessa Lynn Coleman on counts of kidnapping, robbery, rape, and murder. Also, in 2007, Eric DeWayne Boyd was indicted by a federal grand jury of being an accessory to a carjacking, resulting in serious bodily injury to another person, and misprision of a felony. In 2018, Boyd was indicted on state level charges of kidnapping, robbery, rape, and murder. (033) How to Know the Will of God

How do we know the will of God for our lives? It’s a question that is often hotly debated with one side emphasising the need for God’s direct guidance for our decisions and the other emphasising human free will (Listen to: Is God’s will a Narrow Path or a 6-Lane Freeway?). In this podcast, John Peachey from the Mornings show at Rhema New Zealand and I take a different tack. We explore this commonly asked question by drawing on the story told in Jessica Kelley’s book Lord Willing. Against the backdrop of her dying 4 year old son’s battle with brain cancer, Jessica challenges the popular idea that God has some sort of master plan where he ordains and controls every decision. In this view, God's plan did not include her son Henry’s cancer, nor did he even “allow” it. As Jessica so vividly communicates, Jesus came to give abundant life, not to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10), so he could never be to blame for her son’s tragic death. God's sovereignty does not mean he is a controlling micro-manager (Read: What We Mean When we Say God is in Control?), nor he is never to blame for the evil in the world. Jessica’s conclusions about the nature of God’s sovereignty, the presence of evil and the dynamic of human autonomy help us to better understand how to navigate God’s will in our own lives. If we believe in the so-called 'blueprint view', God will always get the blame, ‘everything happens for a reason’ and there is little room for free will. In this way of thinking, we will be paralysed until we hear God's voice and we will approach decisions with a fear of getting it wrong. But if we understand our world to be a powerful interplay of God’s intervention with the fallenness of humanity, we can be better equipped to navigate the ‘will of God’ in our lives. Subscribe to God Conversations with Tania Harris and never miss an episode! More about Lord Willing? by Jessica Kelley Does God's perfect plan really include this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvnDJOx4R98 When her young son was diagnosed with brain cancer, Jessica Kelley couldn't stomach Christian clichés. God's will? Divine design? The Lord's perfect plan? In Lord Willing?, Kelley boldly tackles one of the most difficult questions of the Christian life: if God is all-powerful and all-loving, why do we suffer? For Kelley, this question takes an even more painful and personal turn: did God lack the power or the desire to spare her four-year-old son? For those dissatisfied with easy answers to why evil and tragedy occur, Lord Willing? offers a refreshing, hopeful journey straight to the heart of God. Be prepared for something more beautiful, more pure, and more healing than you can dare to imagine.
