July 10, 1981, Skidmore, Missouri. A man climbs into the cab of his pick-up truck after leaving the D & G Tavern. He starts the truck. Pausing to light a cigarette, shots ring out behind and in front of him, shattering glass and killing the man inside. Forty-five people witnessed the shooting, but when it was over, no one called 911. After picking up the shell casings, the people of this small farming community went on about their business. The dead man inside the truck had robbed, raped, burned and shot the townspeople of Skidmore without ever paying the price. So they took their own pound of flesh and never spoke of it again. This is the mysterious murder of Ken Rex McElroy. In December 2004, 23-year-old Bobbie Jo Stinnett of Skidmore Missouri was excited about having her first baby. At eight months pregnant, she was still active in the rat terrier show circuit and met someone who had a diabolical plan: she wanted Bobbie Jo's baby. Lisa Montgomery catfished the unsuspecting Bobbie Jo, setting up a meeting, posing as ‘Darlene Fischer', pretending she wanted to buy a puppy. Bobbie Jo let her acquaintance into her home, and after a violent struggle she was dead, and her baby had been cut from her womb. Fortunately, law enforcement caught up with Lisa Montgomery, and found baby Victoria Jo alive.  Sponsored by Noom - Sign up for your trial and get psychology-based support to lose weight for good at noom.com/evidencelocker Evidence Locker is also sponsored by BetterHelp – Get 10% off your first month of online therapy at http://betterhelp.com/evidence For pictures and more information, join us on Facebook For a full list of resources and credits visit Evidence Locker Website For all sponsor discount codes, visit this page Want to support our podcast? Along the way, they address the burning questions you didn't even know you had, like: Is Skidmore really just this nice little community of people who are sitting ducks for out-of-town Chester the Molesters, murderers, and baby snatchers? Is Aaron Rodgers actually the pitcher for a Major League Baseball club (and how could anyone possibly know that!)? Does Becky really offer her ear to Merie as a birthday gift? What are the odds of Merie dreaming about cats nursing orphaned baby squirrels? (Pretty good!) What are the odds of you catching Becky watching a “body horror” movie? (Slim to none!) What are the odds of you finding Merie having sex behind a Dumpster (Less than zero - who has that kind of quad strength?!) What is the thing Merie reveals about herself that horrifies Becky so much she wishes to turn back time to before she heard it? Come for the cuss-shaming. Stay for the machete-wielding phone avenger.

We have two stories coming at you this episode and they have their fair share of mystery. In our first story, we talk about the disappearance of 19-year-old Bryce Laspisa whose erratic behavior will lead you confused and clueless just as it has left Bryce's parents, friends, and investigators since August of 2013. For seemingly no reason, Bryce leaves his college town and heads towards his parents' home miles away but never makes it home. There has been no trace of him since that night. It truly sounds like something you would see on an episode of "The Twilight Zone" but on that show, you would at least get some explanation as to what happened. With this story, over 8 years later, all we are left with is questions. Our second story of this episode is all about the small town of Skidmore, Missouri, and its dark, vicious history. Home to an all-around giant piece of shit, Ken Rex McElroy (who we covered all the way back in episode 15!), Skidmore has seen its fair share of brutal murders and mysterious disappearances. This story covers a lot of depraved acts committed by Skidmore's citizens and sounds less like an episode of "The Twilight Zone" and more like a grindhouse horror film you would only find on a list of Video Nasties. Skidmore, Missouri. December 16, 2004. When 23-year-old, 8-months-pregnant Bobbie Jo Stinnett spoke to Darlene Fischer on the internet forum "Ratter Chatter", nothing struck her as particularly odd about the woman. Ratter Chatter was a forum for breeders of rat terrier dogs; Bobbie Jo and her husband Zeb showed the dogs and bred them out of their northwest Missouri home. Darlene said she was interested in adopting one her new puppies.Bobbie Jo was happy to accommodate Darlene, and they arranged to meet at Bobbie Jo's home in Skidmore. When it got to 2:30pm on Dec. 16, the doorbell rang, as Bobbie Jo expected. But when she answered the door, it wasn't Darlene Fischer at all, but rather, another woman who Bobbie Jo knew from the Ratter Chatter forum, Lisa Montgomery. Bobbie Jo would quickly find out that the woman wasn't interested in a dog at all. She wanted something that Bobbie Jo would not give her, but this did not stop her going to extreme lengths to take it.Instagram: @talkmurderwithmeFacebook: @talkmurrderwithmeSources for this episode:Lisa Montgomery: Looking for answers in the life of a killerMurder in the Heartland – M. Skidmore Missouri has a present-day population of 250 people which is really interesting and likely wouldn't be known so infamously if not for a murder that appears to have happened with most of the townspeople knowledge. We'll talk about that in the next episode. But let's find out about this town, through the butcher, baker and candlestick maker or hotel keeper, nurses and townsfolk.   It is named after a surname of person - Marteny Skidmore who settled in the area around 1864 and then in 1880 and planned the town around the Nodaway Valley Railway depot and line. It appears from what I've discovered online is that it was mostly a farming community that had a railway to ship their produce to larger areas.   Join us on a live discussion: www.hauntedhillspod.eventbrite.com.au

If you’ve never experienced small town life, it’ll be almost impossible to comprehend the now-infamous tale of tiny Skidmore Missouri and the day nearly forty years ago that forever changed it.  That day – July 10, 1981 – was the day 47 year-old Ken Rex McElroy was gunned down in cold blood, in a hail of gunfire, in broad daylight while sitting in his truck alongside his wife, on Skidmore’s Main Street, with several dozen of its citizens surrounding the truck.  And yet, almost four decades after the fact, not a soul has admitted to seeing what happened.  How does this happen?  How does an entire town close ranks and keep a secret of such an unbelievably deadly act for so long?  The truth hides in the cracks of a story so wild it begs credulity.  It is a story of the sort of raw brutality and menace usually only found in cheap novels and overly broad morality plays.  It turns out that Bad Guys who are Bad Guys just for the sake of being Bad Guys do exist in this world.  And maybe the worst of the worst was the victim in this story – Ken Rex McElroy himself.  “Town Bully” is the name usually tagged on McElroy – but he was so much more than that.  An amazing force of dark nature, his subsistence – in fact, his entire existence - consisted of appropriation of that which he did not own,  rape, intimidation, destruction of property and the use of a shotgun against people he decided, at his whim, were his enemies.  Those enemies included not just the law, but parents of the 12 year-old girl he declared belonged to him, when those parents objected to his announced plans to marry their daughter.  Or the owner of the local general store, whose wife had asked the simple question “have you paid for that?” when she saw one of McElroy’s children with a piece of candy from the candy counter.  Add to all of this the complete absence of any police, and a County Sheriff’s office that was so intimidated by McElroy it completely abandoned the town of Skidmore to an ever-present sense of dread, waiting for the bully’s next outrage.  Join Melissa as she recounts McElroy’s life and the years and the days leading up to that incredible moment on an otherwise peaceful summer day on Main Street, when an entire community seems to have decided to revert to 19th Century wild-west justice and end the dread of its own volition – and the ramifications of that decision on the soul of Skidmore that will last forever.  You can learn more about the McElroy case in two excellent books Melissa refers to in this episode: In Broad Daylight by Harry N. MacLean (which was also made into a film starring Brian Dennehy); and Judgement Day by Bob Lancaster.  Melissa also recommends the six-part documentary series No One Saw a Thing, now available on Amazon Prime.

In 2002 the FBI made 89 arrests as part of a child pornography investigation known as "Operation Candyman." Among the people who found themselves on the wrong end of this inquest was Jack Wayne Rogers. When his home and business were raided, authorities found much more than they had expected. In addition to thousands of explicit photographs of children, they found evidence that Rogers had removed and eaten the genitals of several men and trans women who believed Rogers to be a cost-effective alternative to a licensed surgeon. They also uncovered an online conversation in which Rogers, using the handle "Buggerbutt", related that he had tortured and murdered a young Skidmore Missouri man. The victim described by Rogers was almost certainly a young man named Branson Perry who had mysteriously disappeared a year prior to Rogers' arrest. Rogers also claimed that this young man was not his first victim. Is Jack Wayne Rogers a serial killer? Or, does this man with a love for child pornography and severed genitals just have a morbid and overly active imagination. This is what we will discuss on episode 19 of Where is the Line?
