ove LA Magazine? I don't miss an issue. How about Orange Coast, Pasadena, and SoCal Magazines for those folks living there? Well, the brains behind all of them is President and Publisher Christopher Gialanella, and I'm thrilled to welcome him to our shows today. Chris is from Livingston, New Jersey, and when I found that out, the two of us couldn't stop chatting about it because I went to the Livingston Mall all the time as a kid, shopping at Spencer's and all kinds of stores we both loved. After working in PR in New York, Chris made his way to LA, and quickly rose within the ranks of publishing, working for Modern Luxury and LA Confidential. And who doesn't get these magazines in their mailboxes, oohing and aahing at the gorgeous home and fashion spreads on the inside. Well, that's Chris' vision, too. And these days, we can't go anywhere without seeing Chris on the red carpet, including at the Oscars this year, and just about anywhere that's relevant in SoCal, you'll find Chris front and center. And he's a master at branding, too. We'll talk about that. We will also talk about the future of magazines and how they're pivoting to online, like most things. And it's profitable. Also, Chris is of ITALIAN descent, and we will discuss the Italian influences in his early life and today. Please join my #DeborahKobyltLIVE, #LittleItalyPodcast and #LittleItalyOfLAPodcast on all video and audio platforms, and please invite your friends, too. I'm your host, #DeborahZaraKobylt, and it's my pleasure to welcome you here. @christophergia @lamag @orangecoastmag @pasadenamag
This week, we chat with Chef Daniel Holzman, who owns Danny Boy's Famous Original, a two-location operation in Los Angeles, California. We spoke with Daniel a few days before the catastrophic wildfires broke out in LA. So, our conversation with Daniel focused on his career, the growth of Danny Boy's and what he has learned in the restaurant business. Danny Boy's locations are currently safe. We would like to recognize Danny Boy's, who has quickly provided sanctuary for those affected. Both pizzerias are feeding the community, firefighters and first responders. More background on Daniel: Daniel started his cooking career at the age of 15 at Le Bernardin in New York City and remained there for four years until (at the suggestion of chef Eric Ripert) he attended the CIA. He then accepted a position at the soon-to-open Palladin in New York City under chef Jean-Louis Palladin (and worked alongside Wylie Dufresne and Sam Mason, among others). He went on to begin what would ultimately become a 10-year culinary journey through some of the West Coast's finest restaurants, including The Campton Place, The Fifth Floor, Aqua and Jardinière.In 2010, he co-founded The Meatball Shop in New York City. The fast-casual mix-and-match menu of meatballs was an instant hit. Five more locations of The Meatball Shop opened in NYC in quick succession, and he also co-authored The Meatball Shop Cookbook, published in 2011.He moved to LA in 2019 to embark on a new passion -- pizza -- and opened Danny Boy's Famous Original, the slice joint of his childhood dreams, in 2021. Describing the years-long his years-long odyssey to perfect the New York-style slice: "As a classically trained chef, I approach pizza with reverence. Pizza isn't fast food; it's one of America's most important dishes. And to understand how to make it great, I deconstructed everything about it. I searched out masters across the country, learned the history, and sampled thousands of pies. I interrogated oven makers, traveled to tomato farms, tried grains from countless flour mills, and experimented with the perfect cheese blend."Since opening, he's received praise from LA Magazine for his "ultrawide, perfectly foldable, tangy-crusted slices [that] nail it"; LAist for being a "NY-style pizzeria that absolutely rips"; and Eater LA, which claimed "There may be no better New York-style slice spot in LA than Danny Boy's right now.” He just opened his second location of Danny Boy's this past summer, and has his sights set on a third. He's also the co-author (with Matt Rodbard) of Food IQ: 100 Questions, Answers, and Recipes to Raise Your Cooking Smarts, released in 2022. (Some of the questions they answer include: "Why does pasta always taste better in a restaurant?", "When is it okay to cook with frozen vegetables?", and "What is baker's math, and why is it the secret to perfect pastry every time?")Last but not least, he also co-hosts On the Line, a podcast during which he and co-host Chef Amanda Freitag interview culinary innovators.More on the LA WildfiresAmong the horrible devastation from the wildfires in Los Angeles, we know there were pizzerias have been lost. Our new Senior Editor Kate Lavin is reporting on the LA Wildfires and the Pizza Community, including local pizzerias directly assisting the efforts on the ground, as well as Slice Out Hunger, who is rallying pizzerias in a fundraising effort to provide emergency funds. CHRIS BOOKER BIOChris Booker was born and raised in West Virginia and got his big start in radio in 1989 while attending West Liberty University in Wheeling, West Virginia. In 1992, he began his self-described "gypsy years radio tour," where he held the positions of on-air personality and music director at a number of different stations as both Chris Booker and Booker Madison in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Florence, Kansas City, and Pittsburgh. In 1996, he landed the evening slot at 92.3 K-Rock in New York City, where he met the nation's top radio talk show host, Howard Stern, who made the young DJ a regular on his program. He made numerous appearances on Howard Stern's show under the name "Booger." Booker left K-Rock in 2003 for the morning drive show on the "Blink" version of WNEW. When that format failed and the show was taken off the air, Booker then worked at Sirius Satellite Radio as morning host for Octane Radio. Booker was then hired at New York Top forty (WHTZ) "Z100" as a fill-in host. Booker eventually found his way back to K-Rock in 2005, where his show aired in the afternoon until the format was changed to "Free FM" talk. His producer and on-air collaborator at the time was Al Dukes. On January 3, 2006, Booker's "new" radio show (carrying over many of the same elements and players as his afternoon drive rock show) titled The Booker Show debuted from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. The show aired on Monday-Thursday, and 7-10 p.m. on Fridays at WFNY-FM (92.3 Free-FM).On May 23, 2008, Booker was fired as the morning show host on "Q102" in Philly (but was still considered an employee of "Q102", due to contractual reasons).Booker has worked as a correspondent for TV Guide Channel covering red carpet events. From 2000 to 2003, Booker was a full-time VJ for MTV and MTV2, hosting such shows as The Return of the Rock, First Listen with Britney Spears, and was the final host for the now defunct series 120 Minutes. From 2003 to 2004, Booker was the New York correspondent for Entertainment Tonight.Since July 2015, Chris Booker and Perez Hilton have hosted a weekly podcast named The Perez Hilton Podcast with Chris Booker According to Billboard, the two met on Amp Radio where Booker hosted "Morning Show on L.A. In this episode of Money Tales, our guests are Lynne Twist and Sara Vetter. Lynne and Sara call themselves “work wives” who run the Soul of Money Institute and the Pachamama Alliance. Lynne and Sara work each day to challenge that automatic and unconscious assumption. In our conversation, they unpack the implications of living in a society where the economy often takes precedence over ecology. Lynne Twist is the founder of the Soul of Money Institute and author of the best-selling, award winning book "The Soul of Money: Transforming Your Relationship with Money and Life”, and her newest book, “Living a Committed Life: Finding Freedom and Fulfillment in a Purpose Larger Than Yourself”. In addition, Lynne serves on a number of nonprofit boards including the Fetzer Institute, The Institute of Noetic Sciences, Bioneers, Conscious Capitalism and Women's Earth Alliance. From working with Mother Teresa in Calcutta to the refugee camps in Ethiopia and the threatened rainforests of the Amazon, Lynne's on-the-ground work has brought her a deep understanding of the social tapestry of the world and the historical landscape of the times we are living in. Sara Vetter is the Business Development Director of the Soul of Money Institute and is a coach, consultant, workshop leader, keynote speaker and strategist. 2023 was a rough year for me. And I suspect it may have been rough for you too. In hopes of lightening things up as we head into a more peaceful and productive 2024, I interview Alli Goldberg, an up and coming comedian who, among other things, hosts a live dating show, Love Isn't Blind, in which the men cannot speak. It is truly an enjoyable conversation. Most recently, she sold her live comedy show How To Break Up By Text to a well-known podcasting platform (releasing in Feb 2024). David Bowie once described aging as “an extraordinary process by which you become the person you have always been.” We want to think of this as a nice sentiment, right? Like, aww, I'm gonna come into my full flower as the best possible version of myself. But what if the “person you've always been” is a nightmare? What if the monster's just been biding its time? Join us for two stories of killer old ladies: Olga Rutterschmidt and Helen Golay, a pair of serial killers who preyed on the most vulnerable members of society; and South Korea's Madame Yoon, a woman who let delusion and obsession take over her life, and the lives of everyone around her. Our guest, Carmen Palafox, is a seasoned venture capitalist. She is a Founding Partner at 2045 Ventures in Los Angeles and Venture Partner at How Women Invest. She is also a Partner at MiLA Capital.Carmen was awarded the Rising Star Award from the Los Angeles Latino Chamber of Commerce. She was spotlighted by the NVCA as a Rising Star in VC and featured by LA Magazine as 1 of 13 of LA's Powerful Women. Coming out of USC, Carmen was fortunate to land her first job at Dimensional Fund Advisors, where she scaled operations into LATAM, Canada, and Europe, going from $75 Billion AUM to $300 Billion AUM.In this episode, Carmen shared her journey into venture capital, launching a fund, the challenges of women and underrepresented founders in the VC world, and what people can expect in the coming years despite the uncertainties in the industry.Episode Quotes:How Haas led her to venture capitalI went to Haas thinking that I'd get into social impact investing, and that was in 2011, when impact investing was a little earlier than it is today. At that time, there's a lot of talk around social impact bonds and pay for success, and that's where I was thinking my career would be headed. But, you know, one of the advantages of going to Haas was the career development group and just the support I got there and the freedom to really explore. And that exploration led me to venture. The challenges that women and underrepresented founders face in the VC industryAs women, we don't want to think that our gender will hold us back. But there are systemic issues. There's bias that people may or may not be aware of. And I think one of the reasons women are successful when they do get funding is because they are capital constrained and do have to be more efficient. I mean, the same is true for underrepresented founders. You just don't know if there will be capital around the corner, so you are more judicious with what you have. And on the flip side, I think there need to be more capital allocators that are focused on outcomes, meaning, we want to see more women founders, we want to meet more women funders. And so, being focused on that as a primary driver to change the status quo. I think it's important to create more balance in an ecosystem. I think that should be our objective. It should be about balance. And I think we would solve a lot of these unintended consequences that we see as a result of the technology that's out there today if we were to bring more balance to the industry.Opportunities for early-stage founders I think it's an epic time, both because of the reset but also the fact that we're coming out of Covid, and during Covid, people had a lot of time to evaluate how they were spending their time, where they were spending their time. And so, I think a lot of people, if they're able to, are prioritizing differently and potentially looking for areas where they can have the most impact in their careers, and where they can shift priorities to their families. I've seen or talked to a lot of startups that are able to attract talent because they have flexibility in how they're going to manage building their company. If you can offer someone with technical talent the ability to work off hours or work remotely from wherever they want, then I think you have an opportunity there as an early-stage founder.Show Links:LinkedIn Profile2045 CapitalHow Women InvestMiLA Capital (Make in LA)Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/onehaas/donations

On September 16th, 2009, Mitrice Richardson was in jail for acting bizarrely in a restaurant in Malibu, not being able to pay for her food, and having less than an ounce of marijuana on her. As you get to know Mitrice through the episode, all of this was so out of character for her. It's likely Mitrice was suffering with bipolar disorder but it crept up slowly through the years, barely detectable. That night, it's believed she had a mental breakdown after not sleeping for five nights. Her mother, Latice, called the station and said since her daughter would be at the jail until morning, she would come pick her up. Morning came sooner than expected. Mitrice was free to go from the station a little after 12AM on September 17th. Latice was not notified. Mitrice was in Malibu, a place she was not familiar with, 40 miles away from home. Her cellphone and purse were in her car, which they had towed off to a tow yard on the Pacific Coast Hwy.After Mitrice left the police station, she walked off into the darkness, never to be seen alive again. In regards to Mitrice's disappearance and strange death, you might start to question everything…• Mike Kessler's LA Magazine feature: https://www.lamag.com/longform/what-happened-to-mitrice-richardson• Ronda Hampton's Data Dump: https://thelocalmalibu.com/huge-data-dump-in-mitrice-richardson-case-in-solving-the-thirteen-year-cold-case/--Socials | Website | Contact | Patreon--Twitter: https://www.Twitter.com/ReverieCrimePodInstagram: https://www.Instagram.com/ReverieTrueCrimeTumblr: https://reverietruecrime.tumblr.comFacebook: https;//www.Facebook.com/ReverieTrueCrimeContact: ReverieTrueCrime@gmail.comWebsite: https://reverietruecrime.wix.com/podcastPatreon: https://www.Patreon.com/ReverieTrueCrime SOURCES:https://malibutimes.com/mitrice-richardson-case-re-established-12-years-laterhttps://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/mitrice-richardson-case-reward-mysterious-and-controversial-death/2848312/https://www.foxla.com/news/county-increases-reward-in-mitrice-richardson-disappearance-deathhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/826857221/https://www.allgaylong.com/blog/the-frustrating-disappearance-of-mitrice-richardson/ https://www.newspapers.com/image/193628377/https://abc7news.com/archive/8581482/https://www.newspapers.com/image/193742662/https://laist.com/news/mitrice-richardson-disappearance-10-year-anniversaryhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/603876279/https://www.newspapers.com/image/603876254/https://www.newspapers.com/image/609072842/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Mitrice_Richardsonhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/194023976/https://www.newspapers.com/image/193229949/ https://www.newspapers.com/image/193230094/https://www.newspapers.com/image/193350362/https://www.newspapers.com/image/193398267/https://www.newspapers.com/image/193445609/https://www.newspapers.com/image/193447043/https://www.newspapers.com/image/193463853/https://www.newspapers.com/image/193475965/https://www.newspapers.com/image/193256173/https://www.newspapers.com/image/193914552/https://www.newspapers.com/image/193487871/https://www.newspapers.com/image/193944201/https://www.newspapers.com/image/193515686/https://www.newspapers.com/image/193868323/https://www.newspapers.com/image/568131707/https://www.newspapers.com/image/193586558/https://www.newspapers.com/image/193588429/https://www.newspapers.com/image/193383404/https://www.newspapers.com/image/193624747/https://www.newspapers.com/image/193389142/https://www.newspapers.com/image/193397993/https://www.newspapers.com/image/193402342/ https://www.newspapers.com/image/193659090/https://www.newspapers.com/image/193659210/https://www.newspapers.com/image/193512782/https://www.newspapers.com/image/193663545/https://www.newspapers.com/image/193382535/https://www.newspapers.com/image/193907633/ https://www.newspapers.com/image/483108346/https://www.newspapers.com/image/796024534/https://www.newspapers.com/image/193484379/https://www.newspapers.com/image/337930547/https://www.newspapers.com/image/285252859/https://www.newspapers.com/image/193578193/https://www.newspapers.com/image/569384487/https://www.newspapers.com/image/193828588/https://www.newspapers.com/image/193510693/

As one of 128 siblings, and part of a much larger Mormon Cult known as ‘The Order', Jacob Kingston hardly stood out. However, that changed when he realized he could use his small biofuel company to scam the US Government out of hundreds of millions of dollars. To make this possible, he reached out to an unlikely partner: the head of Los Angeles' ruthless Armenian Mafia, whose nickname was ‘The Lion'. We are excited to welcome award-winning author, producer and journalist, Michele McPhee, whose latest article in LA Magazine covers this incredible story. The Order - aka The Kingston Clan - is a fundamentalist, polygamist, racist, misogynistic, and criminal Mormon cult. They prefer to keep a low-profile. When Jacob Kingston was advised by an Armenian known as ‘The Lion' to trade in his Toyota Tercel for a Lamborghini, The Order noticed. But their share of the profits - many tens of millions of dollars - was simply too much to do anything about it.Levon ‘The Lion' Termendzhyan dropped out of high school at 17 to work at a gas station, and would became a billionaire by the time he was 30. Despite being a fearsome mafia boss, due to his expertise in fuel transportation and delivery, he seemed like the perfect partner for Jacob.Their criminal operation, which scammed the US government through biodiesel subsidies, generated hundreds of millions of dollars. The scope of protecting their operation and spending their stolen money was spectacular. It spanned from Utah to California to Belize to Turkey, the latter of which where they stashed over $100 million should they ever needed to flee the US. They spent millions more using a fake attorney to pay off an LA Narcotics cop and an FBI counter-terrorism agent, and to buy multiple Bugattis, a Bel-Air mansion, private jets and even a 150-foot yacht.Make sure to check out Michele's incredible article, ‘The Mobster and the Mormon' in LA Magazine. As always, thanks for listening to Heroes Behind Headlines.

Make sure you pull up and check out the hottest new spot in LA! fLexx pulled up to Chop Life this past weekend, Chef Ohi's mentioned the event his brother created on episode 134, fLexx said it lived up to all the hype great music, good people, and fantastic food. Shout out to the dancers especially NK because she ate and left no crumbs! Ashley got her hippie on at Groove Fest in Topanga Canyon. Original SSCO performed a dope set of unreleased dance music and Ash fell in love with an indie band TruckBox. Come Thru got so much love over at the House of Orange Fashionably Late event at peppermint club especially when the crew at VerySpecial co-hosted! Ash loved that it was a formal event; everyone showed up and showed out! Keep music in the school Ash + fLex talked about their lack of musical talent! Aye Caramba! Tyga apologized to the Mexican community for his “Ay Caramba” music video in an interview with American Cholo podcast host Gil Tejada on the LA Leakers radio show. The apology was taken down and has since sparked a protest of the radio station spearheaded by a friend of the pod DeJon from A Day in LA Magazine after a video surfaced of American Cholo calling Black people slurs. Ashley's takeaway The message, the delivery, and the messenger are very important! The song Energy on Beyonce's new album Renaissance uses an interpolation aka a sample of Kelis's Milkshake. This triggered Kelis to release a very heated iOS press release which caused Bey to just removed the sample from the album and keep it pushing. Hello, and welcome to Beauty and the Biz where we talk about the business and marketing side of plastic surgery and how Sheila Barbarino, MD has practices in LA and Austin. I'm your host, Catherine Maley, author of Your Aesthetic Practice – What your patients are saying, as well as consultant to plastic surgeons, to get them more patients and more profits. Now, today's episode is called “Practices in LA and Austin. How? - with Sheila Barbarino, MD". When life throws you a curve ball, you have the choice to duck, run away or figure it out. That's what Sheila Barbarino, MD did. She figured it out. Dr. Barbarino, a cosmetic surgeon of the face and body has a thriving practice in LA with celebrity clientele, lots of PR media opportunities and a great reputation as the go-to source for expert techniques for injectables, laser and aesthetic devices. All was well until she experienced a pull to set up another practice in Austin, TX (you have to listen in to find out). This week's Beauty and the Biz Podcast is my interview with Dr. Barbarino describing her journey from LA to Austin to worldwide lecturer, innovator and industry thought leader. It's quite a ride! It was 2015. I was at a comic book store late one night and in strode Chris Nichols of LA Magazine. "John, Angelyne is outside and she'd give you a ride in the pink Corvette if you want." He had me at Angelyne, and the ride was awesome. 45 minutes later I had an audio portrait of one of the hardest working women in Hollywood who strives to live within her warm pink bubble. And later, when the Hollywood Reporter finally uncovered her backstory, it all made sense. As also told in the Peacock miniseries, Angelyne was fighting the dehumanizing legacy of the Holocaust in her family. This episode also features a fresh interview with LAist's Mike Roe about the miniseries, Angelyne's reaction to it, and our mutual admiration for a woman who remade herself and her life. Support for this podcast is made possible by Gordon and Dona Crawford, who believe that quality journalism makes Los Angeles a better place to live; and by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a private corporation funded by the American people. No one joins a cult; everyone joins a good thing, but once you're in too deep, it can be impossible to tell the difference. In 1958, Charles E. Dietrich Sr set out to do a good thing: create a drug rehabilitation center that was more inclusive, unlike AA which he found to be limiting. What started out as a new-wave addiction treatment movement turned into a violent and dangerous cult that was existing in plain sight and operating very differently on the inside than was being shown to the outside world.Headed by a troubled dictator, Synanon eventually became known as "one of most dangerous and violent cults America had ever seen". Forced abortions and taking violent revenge on anyone who fought against them (especially lawyer Paul Morantz) are just some of the sinister details outlined in our discussion.FIND US ON SOCIAL MEDIA:Instagram: @crimefamilypodcastTwitter: @crimefamilypod1Facebook: Crime Family PodcastEmail: crimefamilypodcast@gmail.comCheck out our new website at crimefamilypodcast.caMusic (pre-theme) by LiteSaturation on Pixabay.EPISODE RESOURCES:"The Man who Fought Cults and Won" by Matt Novak. Few people have managed to document the modern history of technology as Jonathan Littman has. Jonathan is a prominent author and journalist known for the bestselling book The Art of Innovation that he collaborated on with IDEO co-founder David Kelley and his brother Tom Kelley. In this episode of Before IT Happened, we talk about Jonathan's most recent book, The Entrepreneur's Faces, the different categories of entrepreneur personalities and his experience inside the fast-growing tech hub of Lisbon, Portugal. Listen now and try to guess which entrepreneur archetype matches your personality! Before any world-changing innovation, there was a moment, an event, a realization that sparked the idea before it happened. This is a podcast about that moment — about that idea. Before IT Happened takes you on a journey with the innovators who imagined — and are still imagining — our future. Join host Donna Loughlin as her guests tell their stories of how they brought their visions to life. JUMP STRAIGHT INTO: (01:18) - Jonathan Littman's successful career as an author and journalist - “I had a fantastic job and then suddenly saw an opportunity for my first real startup, which was a book.” (08:04) - Documenting the origin of innovation: Working with brothers Tom and David Kelly inside IDEO - “The success of Apple and Samsung are hugely dependent on this relationship. Samsung had like 20 designers live at IDEO, and that's really the reason they jumped ahead.” (14:06) - Beyond the visionary: Defining the different categories of entrepreneurs outlined in The Entrepreneur's Faces - “There are all these blanket statements: ‘It's all about the team'. But then you actually never hear the archetypes of the team… You don't really want to have four visionaries.” (21:01) - On influential leaders and companies' archetypes - “With Bezos, it was all about performance. It was all about making revenue and changing fast. He had no interest really in design, beauty or elegance.” (22:58) - The new California Dream is in Portugal: Do these archetypes have cultural or physical barriers? - “We can sell nothing right here in San Francisco, we can sell a promise… And most people from the rest of the world really struggle with that.” (27:01) - Unraveling the different phases within innovation - “The most important thing you can do as a mentor or an advisor is to help people make a shift.” (31:10) - Tough times and opportunities - “When the rules change, when habits change, when behaviors change, it's the ideal time to start.” EPISODE RESOURCES: Connect with Jonathan on https://twitter.com/jonlittman (Twitter) and https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathan-littman-0619325/ (LinkedIn) Read Jonathan's most recent book: https://www.theentrepreneursfaces.com/ (The Entrepreneur's Faces) Read Jonathan's LA Magazine story: https://www.lamag.com/culturefiles/the-new-california-dream-is-in-portugal/ (The New California Dream Is in Portugal ) Learn more about innovation hub https://smartup.life/ (Smartup.life) and Jonathan's http://snowballnarrative.com/ (Snowball Narrative) Watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtK-XedI7hg (Jonathan Littman & Susanna Camp The Entrepreneur's Faces: How Makers Visionaries & Outsiders Succeed) Thank you for listening! Malibu, California. September 16, 2009. Mitrice Richardson had not been herself for a while. One day in mid-September, 24-year-old Mitrice was arrested for being unable to pay her bill at an exclusive Malibu restaurant. She was taken to the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station. Her mother, Latice, was assured by a sheriff's deputy that she would be kept in custody over night. But this was not to be; Mitrice ended up being released in the middle of the night with no purse, phone, or any personal belongings. No one truly knows what happened to Mitrice that night.Eleven months later, her partially-mummified remains were discovered at the bottom of a canyon. Mitrice's devastated family and friends were desperate for answers. The LA County Sheriff's Department, on the other hand, had no interest in finding out what happened. Time and time again, they failed Mitrice's family. To this day, her cause of death remains unknown.Instagram: @talkmurderwithmeFacebook: @talkmurrderwithmeSources:Latice's book on Mitrice (Amazon link)LA Magazine article by Mike Kessler: What Happened To Mitrice Richardson?Malibu-area search fails to find missing woman, 24Long search for Mitrice Richardson comes to tragic endSix Years Later Mitrice Richardson's Death Still An Unsolved MysteryMissing woman's mother sues Los Angeles County and Sheriff's DepartmentFriends and relatives remember Mitrice RichardsonLie and Deny: Secrecy and Suspicion Surround the Los Angeles County Sheriff's DepartmentHopes for a new investigation into Mitrice Richardson case end in disappointmentAgain, no sign of Mitrice RichardsonCoroner's official criticizes Sheriff's Department for moving Mitrice Richardson's remainsAttorney general's probe finds no evidence of wrongdoing by deputies in death of Mitrice Richardson The California Attorney General's Office Finally Agrees to Look Into the Mitrice Richardson CaseCoroner's official criticizes Sheriff's Department for moving Mitrice Richardson's remainsMore bones found in ravine where Mitrice Richardson was discoveredTentative Settlement Approved in Mitrice Richardson CaseLos Angeles County authorities exhume woman's remainsMusic from Purple Planet MusicSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/talk-murder-with-me/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

We love getting into the minutiae of this valley. But this time we're getting the view of Vegas from far away. Andy Wang has been traveling and writing for LA Magazine, Food & Wine, The Robb Report, The New York Times and many other publications. Over the past 20 years, Matt Vilano has written more than 100 stories about Las Vegas and has edited at least a dozen travel guide books. In Time Magazine, he recently declared Las Vegas one of the world's greatest places. Before we talk to Andy and Matt, we hung out with DW Bistro co-owner Bryce Krausman. He shared his recent Vegas fun. And he (like us) is especially excited about Vegas Unstripped, which is back after a one year hiatus. We dive into all the details and talk to several of the chefs who will be taking part on the night of October 16th. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Writer and performer Annabelle Gurwitch never got rich over the course her decades-long career, but she managed to carve out a decent life as a working actor and published author. In her fifties, however, her fortunes changed and she found herself divorced, renting out a room in her house, and wondering how a middle class existence can slip away after a lifetime of hard work. She chronicles these struggles-often hilariously-in her fifth book You're Leaving When? Adventures in Downward Mobility. In this conversation, Annabelle speaks with Meghan about how she thinks she got to this place, what she's learned about homelessness and access to health care, and how a recent medical crisis has raised her stakes even further. She also speaks about her child, now a young adult, who identifies as nonbinary and how coming to understand that identity led her to think that future generations might be able to make better sense of the world than we do. Guest Bio: Annabelle Gurwitch is the author of five books, including The New York Times bestseller and Thurber Prize finalist I See You Made an Effort. She's written for The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal, LA Magazine and Hadassah among other publications. Her latest book is You're Leaving When? Adventures in Downward Mobility, published by Counterpoint Press.
I heard Lynne Twist speak for the first time approximately eight years ago and have been a huge fan of her work ever since. Her ability to capture the essence of what matters most in life is deeply moving and inspiring. In fact, what I distinctly remember from that day is that every cell in my body was resonating with energy that coursed through my body and made what felt like an indelible impression on my soul. When I returned home, I dove more deeply into her work. I discovered that while tiny in physical presence, she has always been mighty in vision and capability. For more than forty years she has been a recognized global visionary dedicated to alleviating poverty, ending world hunger, and supporting social justice and environmental sustainability. Her breadth of knowledge and experience has led her to profound insights about the social tapestry of the world and the historical landscape of the times we are living in, especially now as we continue our journey into what she calls “The Sophia Century," which is defined as the time in our history when the feminine archetype returns, awakening women and men to transform the world. Lynne Twist is a global pro activist, speaker, and author of the best-selling book, The Soul of Money: Transforming Your Relationship with Money and Life. She is the co-founder of the Pachamama Alliance, a social profit organization that is an alliance between indigenous people of the Amazon Rainforest and conscious, committed people in the modern world, for the sustainability of life. Lynne has shared her passion on stage with some of today's top thought leaders, including Oprah Winfrey, The Dalai Lama, Jane Goodall, and Desmond Tutu. Sara Vetter is the Business Development Director of the Soul of Money Institute (SOMI) and is a coach, consultant, workshop leader, keynote speaker, and strategist. She is also the Major Gift Fundraiser for the Pachamama Alliance. Sara has had experience in advertising, marketing, and sales with the Disney Channel and several magazines including LA Magazine. She has been coaching, consulting, and leading workshops with Lynne Twist for more than seven years. Sara is an experienced SOMI facilitator of workshops, fundraisers, journeys, and retreats. She also leads several of the Pachamama Alliance Transformational Educational programs. Sara has held a leadership role with the Nobel Women's Initiative, co-led delegations to Dharamsala, India, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Liberia. As the major gift fundraiser for the Pachamama Alliance, Sara has led and participated in more than nineteen delegations and immersion trips to the Amazon Rainforest. She has raised millions of dollars for the Pachamama Alliance and the Nobel Women's Initiative and is a consummate fundraiser. What if this is not the darkness of the tomb, but the darkness of the womb?' Watch Valarie Kaur's speech, link below. Show Notes: This is a time of deep rupture, but also tremendous wisdom. The 20th Century was dominated by war or the fear of war. We are experiencing a breakdown of governance and the rule of law globally that has been dominating and surpassing for centuries. We are experiencing a revealing (revelation) of the many systems of colonization, white supremacy, racism, and the systematic abuse of other human beings. The Soul of Money Institute has been working in the realms of economy and ecology with the goal of guiding our human family back into remembering our connection to mother nature and in building sustainability. The masculine energy of economy and feminine energy of ecology need to work together in harmony and find a way to integrate and work together. We need both the innovation and the production of the masculine energy but we need that energy to be tempered with the nurturing and the flow of the feminine - such as the elements of fire and water. The pandemic is a portal into the change we need to reflect, reveal, regenerate, renew, recreate. This is a magical time where we invite the feminine back into our awareness. This is also a time to trust nature and witness the regenerative power of our environment and see it as proof of what's possible. The Kichwa People use the word Pachamama which means the earth, the sky, the universe, and all time. Lynne had an awakening experience through a shamanic ceremony and a vision and communication that connected her to an indigenous tribe called the Achuar people. The Soul of Money and The Pachamama Alliance have both been an integral part of connecting to the wisdom of the indigenous people and bringing it to the modern world so that we can transform our ways. The Remarkable Women's Journey is a program offered by The Soul of Money Institute through a six-month journey and part of that is traveling into the Amazon Rain Forest learning how they can be of service to the world in a bigger way. If you are a woman, your role is way more vital than you have known before. Your job at this time in history is to own that and tune into what is calling you forward and to do it with full permission and passion. You are wanted, needed, and you are important to the future of the planet, not as a burden, but as an honor. This time in our history is happening for us, not to us.
