Afua Kyei, Chief Financial Officer at the Bank of England, has been named Britain's most influential black person. She grew up in South London, reading copious numbers of Enid Blyton books and listening to Boyzone, got 6 A levels and went to university a year early. She studied chemistry at Oxford and Princeton, but then had a change of heart . She became a chartered accountant and - in 2019 at the age of just 36 - she was appointed Chief Financial Officer at the Bank of England, the Bank's youngest and first ever black executive officer in its 325 year history. Mark Coles looks back at the life of this year's most influential Black Briton talking to Afua's friends, family and colleagues to discover how she combines parenting four children under the age of nine with balancing the books at the Bank of England. Please lord forgive us for whatever we did to deserve this album in our run of 90s number ones. We knew it was on the horizon and finally here we are. It's only a mild spoiler to say we weren't looking forward to listening to this one and it turns out we were pretty justified in those fears. Sorry if you're a Boyzone fan - you might want to skip this episode. But at least you, the listener, can enjoy our sacrifice and we do at least get to talk about some other music from the time such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rancid and Urge Overkill so it's not wall to wall slagging off boybands. As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating or comment over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist (which contains ALL of the songs we talk about on this one) and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. And if you want to donate to our PayPal account for the price of a pint or a cup of coffee that is always appreciated as well obviously. Cheers!

In 1970, The Beatles released their final-and worst-studio album, Let It Be. Since then, its underwhelming title track has become associated with charity events, social causes, drunk boomer sing-alongs, and is probably the favorite song of the cringiest person you know. But in 2010, the Norwegian travel show Gylne Tider pulled off the impossible by making the song actually entertaining for the first time. With the help of over two dozen celebrities from the '80s and '90s, and a cheap-to-license version of the song intended to raise money following a ferry disaster, the show unintentionally created one of the weirdest videos on YouTube. From Jason Alexander to Ireland's very own Boyzone, no one on the “Let It B-List” was left out of this baffling piece of advertising.Watch Let It Be HEREFollow us on Instagram to stay updated about our monthly live shows!Check out more from Justin here: justindodd.rocks Check out more from Steve here: stevejhward.comdrinkgenies.com

Welcome to episode 222 with Anthony Kavanagh, a singer and author who exploded onto the pop music scene in the late 90's when his song ‘I Can Make You Feel Good' was a huge hit all over the world. At just 18 years old he was touring with the Spice Girls and Boyzone, on the front cover of Smash Hits and countless magazines and regularly appearing on Top of the Pops. Throughout this time Anthony was keeping his sexuality a secret, slowly developing a serious drinking problem and all while trying to stay relevant in the music industry where fame can be quickly taken away and second chances are few and far between. In this episode, Anthony joins me to chat about growing up in Manchester with dreams of being a pop star and how he made those dreams a reality. We talk about Smash Hits awards, sell out tours and being a pop star and we chat about what happens when the hits stop coming and the money starts to run out. We also talk about 90's nostalgia, the mental toll of hiding his sexuality, addiction, rehab, recovery and the beauty of finding humour and hope in the darkness. His recent book ‘Popscars: A Memoir on Fame, Addiction and the Dark Side of 90's pop' is one of my reads of the year so far and it was wonderful to chat about why he decided to write the book and what he learned about himself from writing down his story to share with the world. Anthony is a lovely man and it was absolutely lovely to chat! Joining me today is Simon Merry. With over 25 years of experience Simon Merry is one of the UK's most in demand drummers. His style and professionalism has been sought after over the years for touring and recording by such artists as: George Michael, Ronan Keating, Boy George, Natalie Imbruglia, Gene Pitney, Olly Murs, Sophie Ellis Bextor, One Direction, Gary Kemp, Paul Young, Boyzone, Bananarama, Go West and Rick Astley. Join us for a fascinating conversation as we pick through some of the amazing highlights of his remarkable career so far. We of course talk about his gig with the legend that is Rick Astley (also a mean drummer as many of you will have seen) Simon also tells us how he got the Gene Pitney gig as a teenager, Simons dad was Gene's musical director and offerd the gig to Simon, not without a proper auduition first though, so certainly no favours and he had to and indeed did deliver the goods until Pitneys death in 2006. Simon, thank you for an absoloutely fascinating conversation! www.simonmerry.com

Is it future? Or is it past? One thing's for sure - it's a brand new season of NO ENCORE~!And it wouldn't be The Return of this particular podcast without leaning into some truly tragic news in the form of the passing of visionary filmmaker David Lynch, who shuffled off this mortal coil in mid-January. As such, we're marking the first episode back with a tribute to a man who inspired as much creativity as he did nightmares during his time on this earth. A true original, Lynch cast a genuinely mesmerising spell in his work via a uniquely potent mix of imagination, surrealism, horror, and deep empathy. He deserves to be celebrated, and so we will do just that. Leading the charge is returning guest co-host David A. Tapley; mastermind of Tandem Felix and a damn fine Gordon Cole impersonator - seriously, he went as him for a Twin Peaks-themed night once and it looked and sounded terrific. ACT ONE: The preamble in which we ramble. ACT TWO (9:05): Plenty of news to dissect from weeks gone by, including Nine Inch Nails' very welcome impending visit to Dublin, Grimes saying Grimes things, the jaw-dropping Emilia Perez controversy, popular music artists of the time turning to cinematic endeavours. Ringo Starr's red-hot confession, Kendrick's dominance at the Grammy Awards (and Drake's further public humiliation), Gracie Abrams stans finding new ways to cause problems, the Boyzone documentary, and Billy Corgan stepping onto our turf. ACT THREE (1:09:06): Top 5 David Lynch Music-Follow Tandem Felix on X / Instagram / Bandcamp Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Louis Walsh is undoubtedly one of Irelands most successful music moguls of all time. In a career spanning nearly 50 years, the Mayo native had an ear for talent and an eye for a story, helping him shape pop music history—one headline at a time. But Walsh was no stranger to bending the rules to get his acts noticed and has come under renewed flack after his appearance on a new docuseries ‘Boyzone: No Matter What' chronicling the rise of one of Irelands greatest pop exports, and for better or worse, his hand in their success. Just how did a small-town manager build a global sensation, and would it have worked any other way? Copy: From Boyzone, to Westlife, to The X Factor and beyond, Louis Walsh is undoubtedly one of Irelands most successful music moguls of all time. In the documentary, he reveals that he used to sell stories about Boyzone to tabloids to keep them in the public eye, including rumours, such as one that Baby Spice and Stephen Gately were dating. If they “got the front page”, he said, he was happy. Lynch recently said: “We've always known the way Louis Walsh operates. And in fairness to him, Ireland and the name Louis Walsh, he's a big name and a big fish in the music industry. Was his puppeteering of the press a necessary evil, or can the highs and lows of Boyzone act as a cautionary tale to a music industry still under scrutiny for how it treats its young stars Today on the Indo Daily Fionnán Sheahan is joined by journalist Ann Marie Hourihane and culture writer Louise Bruton, to discuss how a small-town manager built a global sensation, and ask: would it have worked any other way?
