The Black Experience Abroad (with Ronah)

Play Episode Listen Later May 13, 2022 95:23

WE ARE BACK, with another episode of the Bonnet Talks after a mini hiatus. I am giving you an hour and a half worth of content to make up for the last few months (with a video version of the episode coming out on Wednesday)! Back in August 2021, I sat down with my Ugandan-British love, Ronah, to discuss her experiences as an English teacher in Seoul, being black in Korea, and learn more about her as a person. I liked this episode initially because you get to see a different side of Ro but I think what is cooler is that so much time has passed since this recording that my perspectives on some of these topics have shift/I've partially answered some of the questions we asked in this episode. And that is on GROWTH, people! I had the opportunity to meet Ro in person while being in Seoul, and I am so lucky to have her as a sister. She is the most incredible energy (and you can see her literally glowing off the screen on YouTube) and is genuinely one of the FUNNIEST people I have ever met. Ro is an absolute legend. En fin. Shuchen and I talk about how we became friends (literally the beginning of summer), our high school experiences (why was the cafeteria like the battlefield?), her past struggles with embracing her Asian identity in American culture, and the idea that people don't want to accept all that you are. We also reflect on funny, but impactful, childhood memories (HINT: Hannah Montana, anyone? Enough said.) This was an eye-opening episode even for me, and I really hope it encourages you to not only more aware of your words/actions but to develop your curiosity in other cultures and backgrounds. In today's episode I brought on my good friend, Meghan O'Neil to talk about Imposter Syndrome, something I've noticed many recent grads talking about feeling during their transition into the adulting life. I thought it would be good to bring Meghan on to chat about this because she performed research on Imposter Syndrome for her dissertation at the University of Oxford in the UK. We both share our experiences with the topic as well as what Meghan found in her research to help combat it. Such an interesting episode and Meghan is always someone I enjoy learning from. Hope you enjoy! Be sure to check out my instagram (@amaappiah), the TBT insta (@thebonnettalks) and Youtube (Ama Appiah) channels. For business inquiries, please email, thebonnettalks@gmail.com.

Today's episode is with my good friend from college, Adam Sherif - As we approach our one year since graduation, we reflect on the past year and what we decided to prioritize during this period in our lives. In our discussion, we both had a commonality of reassessing our friendships and realizing the importance of the Post-Grad Draft - deciding who we want on our team as a support system during the transition from college into the real world. Adam is always someone I can learn from so I hope he can provide the same to you, it's such a good episode! Enjoy and have a nice week everyone! Positivity and Self Control (with Christina O'Connor)

Today's episode is all about how we can use positivity to drive healthy self control. Like Taylor Swift says in her song 22, the side effects of being twenty-something-year-old include being happy, free, confused and lonely at the same time. It's miserable and magical OH YEAH! Knowing this, I wanted to talk a bit about how we can use happiness and our freedom to make good choices that help bring us towards being the best version of ourselves. To help me out with this, I brought on my friend Christina O'Connor, the CEO of sunshine, to talk about the ways she's learned to do this in college, and how she continues to apply it. Hope you enjoy the episode! Be sure to check out my instagram (@amaappiah), the TBT insta (@thebonnettalks), Twitter (@amaaappiah), and Youtube (Ama Appiah) channels. Hi friends! In today's episode, I talk about increased pressures to be productive and creative during quarantine-time. I share some of my experiences with this pressure, as well as what we need to remind ourselves of - give yourself a break! We are all doing the best we can with current circumstances. Even though social media makes this harder to do, try not to compare how you are spending this time with others.
