Thank you, Rachel, for helping me launch my career. Woohoo! I met Rachel several years ago post-college. I was networking my butt off and I don't even remember how, but I think I cold-LinkedIn messaged her. I agreed to meet up with her for a mentorship meet-and-greet coffee with her and other young women wanting to network. That morning, thank goodness was a good day for me. She saw my fire and really helped me land a big girl internship as a Copywriter.    Rachel continued to mentor me for a few years. What I really adore about Rachel is her mission is so clear—empowering women in ANY kind of business or venture. After every conversation, I left with high spirits and a fire under my butt.    Any women or anyone at all who wants to network with one of the big shots of Orange County, I urge you to connect with Rachel. Don't be shy!   Rachel is unstoppable.  Throughout Svoboda's extensive 20-year career in advertising, she has led prestigious advertising teams at Amusement Park (formerly DGWB), Phelps, and Saatchi & Saatchi, Los Angeles. She is currently CEO at Sunday Brunch Agency. Rachel is a single mother of two and lives in Huntington Beach.   Rachel is also the CEO and Founder of Lynxx bourbon; a bourbon that celebrates female empowerment. She noticed a huge gap in the whiskey market, and noticed that women turn to wine after a long day. Of course Rachel being Rachel, she wanted to change that.    This year, Rachel was elected as a Board of Director at Working Wardrobes and joined the Advisory Board for Girls Inc. Rachel recently launched a streaming video series called, The Brunch Club, where we raise a glass and champion female talent and leadership everywhere. Rachel was named Women of the year by The National Association of Professional Women. She is currently an official MBA mentor at Chapman University and a featured speaker on the university's inaugural Women in Business Association series.   Episode Show Notes Introducing Rachel Svoboda, our stunning amazing April 2022 Leader.  What book are you currently reading and how did you come across it? 16:06 What is your earliest memory of reading? 27:00 What are your reading rituals? 35:31 What books are on your nightstand? 50:06 What has been the most motivating book you've read? 58:06 If you could have an author write about your life, who would it be? 1:00:00 What moves you in a work of literature? 1:02:15 If you could gift a book to anyone, what would it be and who would it be to? 1:04:40 What makes you Dog-Ear a page? 1:05:35 Why do you read? 1:07:55 What book would you recommend to me?   Books mentioned in episode  Sex at Dawn by Christopher Ryan  Dangerous Books for Girls by Maya Rodale  The Beautiful and the Damned by F. He later performed The Portrait of Sissieretta Jones in-person in upstate New York in 2021. He also did background on Saturday Night Live in 2021. Maurice talks about why he didn't attend any Black Lives Matter protests, because he didn't want to contract Covid-19 and expose his roommate who was immune-compromised. However, by being a Black man in America, he is living proof that Black Lives Matter. He also shares how he sadly lost his brother in 2021 and how he continues to grieve the loss in 2022.

Today you will hear me, Sonja, be interviewed by my classmate, Leah. We met in our MFA program for creative writing at City College of New York in 2019. We both attended classes online in 2020. I actually wrote a dark comedy titled The Brunch Club, which was read by Naked Angels Theater on February 1st, 2021 (Thanks Naked Angels!). It's about five college students from different walks of life who endure a stressed-out college professor (not me) while reading “Love in the Time of Cholera” in class on Zoom. I digress. This is part one of my interview with Leah who asks me a few questions. In this segment you will hear the first question that she asks me, which is: (1) Why did I start my podcast, Black America and Covid? Leah Kogen-Elimeliah is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the English Department at City College of N.Y. She is also Founder & Director of http://www.wordshednyc.org A social project built on an all-inclusive platform for writers and artists of all backgrounds, infused with a myriad of cultures to gather and celebrate diversity and a creative renewal.
