Shoot us a Text.Episode #1032: Today we break down Trump's new tariff offsets for U.S. automakers, GM's massive recall of its flagship V-8, and a heartwarming $50K donation from West Herr's CEO to support local youth.Show Notes with links:President Trump is throwing automakers a bit of a lifeline on tariffs—but it's not a free ride. His new executive orders are easing some of the pressure, but only if manufacturers meet some very specific conditions.Automakers who build vehicles in the U.S. can apply for a special reimbursement starting April 3, 2025.That reimbursement is worth 3.75% of the MSRP for the first year, dropping to 2.5% in year two.To qualify for the full break, at least 85% of the vehicle's parts have to be made in the U.S. or in a country covered by the USMCA.If a vehicle hits 50% U.S. content, the company will only pay tariffs on the remaining 35% instead of the full 50%.Parts themselves are also capped—companies can get reimbursed for components making up to 15% of a vehicle's value in year one, and 10% in year two.Vehicles and parts must be assembled in the U.S. to qualify, and a new system for applying is expected within 30 days.At a Detroit rally yesterday, President Trump said, “They took in parts from all over the world. I don't want that. I want them to make their parts here. We gave them a little bit of time before we slaughter them if they don't do this.”In news that hits close to home, General Motors has issued a voluntary recall of 721,000 6.2-liter V-8 engines due to potential engine seizure, affecting pickups and large SUVs built from March 2021 through May 2024.The issue stems from rod bearing damage caused by sediment and crankshafts with improper dimensions and surface finish.Faulty components were supplied by American Axle & Manufacturing and Questum Macimex.Dealers face backlog challenges as each engine swap takes over 22 hours and requires full replacement engines.GM says inspections will begin first; engines that pass will receive 0W-40 oil, a new filter, cap, and owner's manual update.“The safety and satisfaction of our customers are the highest priorities for the entire GM team,” said spokesman Bill Grotz. We'll end the show with a bright spot: During the Depew-Lancaster Boys & Girls Club's Spring Fundraiser, West Herr President/CEO Scott Bieler made a surprise $50,000 donation through his family foundation. The gift honored Bethanne Hollis, West Herr's VP of Variable Ops and a club board member. The donation helps offset major funding losses for the club this year.Funds will directly support local youth programs and services.“We are so lucky to have both of these amazing individuals leading the way,” West Herr statJoin Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

Have you ever felt excluded in the workplace? We are willing to bet your answer is yes. Feeling excluded can range from being the minority to not being invited to a lunch group. What corporations tend to forget about is that employee motivation and retention is directly linked to belonging and inclusion.  Today Deepa is speaking to Cheryl Thompson, Founder and CEO of CADIA - the Center for Automotive Diversity, Inclusion and Advancement. Cheryl is on a mission to double the amount of diverse leaders in the Automotive Industry by 2030. She offered great tips for how we can begin to change our work cultures to be more inclusive. Key Points from this Episode: A big challenge for minorities is feeling as if you are always being watched and will be judged more than the majority.  When someone doubts us, we immediately turn and doubt ourselves. We can easily give up our own sense of identity to fit into corporate culture.  When we can't be our authentic self, our brains don't work as well! How much more productive and profitable would organizations be if all employees can be authentic? It is not enough to hire diverse talent, organizations need to embrace all cultures. This promotes creativity within projects and the organization is able to keep talent instead of having a high turnover rate. A change of culture within organizations will help build inclusive environments. First thing is to include yourself, take responsibility for showing up authentically. You can be the change agent. There has to be a Leadership Commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion- they set the tone and the priorities, they model what is valued within the company.  Systemic Change is needed for overall inclusion in a company as well. You have to look at how your company hires, offers benefits, and unconscious biases. Start to assess performance differently. Ask your leadership team - What do you define as success? What would get in the way of someone who doesn't look like you to reach that success? We hope you liked this episode! Let us know in the comments - have you had moments where you have felt excluded in your work culture? What did you do?  About Cheryl https://www.linkedin.com/in/cheryl-thompson/ (Cheryl Thompson) is the founder of the Center for Automotive Diversity, Inclusion & Advancement. ‘Don't grow a wishbone where your backbone ought to be.' Rather than running from conflict, Marilyn Suttle suggests that if you are willing to listen when a customer or colleague is angry, there is a real opportunity to grow and strengthen the relationship. Suttle is a customer service and communication expert who is known for helping teams make ‘Suttle Shifts' in thinking to achieve breakthrough success with customers. Her clients include Ford Motor, American Axle, and Visteon, among others. She is also a sought-after international speaker, presenting to global leadership teams with a focus on customer service and composure under pressure. Suttle is the best-selling author of the customer service guides Who's Your Gladys? and the 2016 release, Taming Gladys! Her advice has been featured on a number of well-known podcasts and TV news spots and in publications like Psychology Today, Fast Company, and US News and World Report. Today she explains how to reframe conflict, why political discourse shuts down the frontal cortex, and how simple changes can have a big-time impact. Listen in to identify your Gladys—and what you can learn from her!   Key Interview Takeaways  Your ‘Gladys' is the customer who points out problem areas. She requires more patience and effort, but you need her because Gladys is willing to speak up when others don't. Look for the simple changes that make the biggest impact. For example, your entire team should be aligned with the same definition of ‘response time.' Customers crave consistency of experience. Create a culture of customer service. Leadership must demonstrate customer service and model it internally. Don't grow a wishbone where your backbone ought to be. Conflict, well handled, leads to stronger relationships. Rather than avoiding it, shift your mindset to focus on staying calm and really listening. People don't always tell you when they're upset. If you are dealing with a global team, for instance, ask in advance what parts of your PowerPoint slides might be offensive, confusing or off-putting in translation. Political discourse requires that we manage the fear. When fear goes up, intelligence plummets—shutting down the frontal cortex. Stopping to breath reactivates your logic sensors, shifts your brain chemistry and puts you in a creative space. Don't take ‘grumbling' personally. For some, grumbling is part of their process when faced with a task they don't want to do. When you get upset and interfere with the process, you create unnecessary conflict. Option Block 317: The Old Goldman Bait and Switch Trading Block: A mild rally on the street today. JCPenney on the move, jumping as high as 26%, its greatest one-day percentage gain in least 30 years! Tesla announced on Wednesday its big expansion plans will be partially funded through a $1.6 billion bond issue. Goldman's investor day study. Odd Block: Call buyers in American Axle and Manufacturing (AXL), both calls and puts trade in CBL & Associates Properties, Inc. (CBL). Xpress Block: Some hedging going on: VIX call buying, SPDR put buying. Customers seem to be getting nervous. Mail Block: The all-stars will take your questions now. Question from Concerned Spreader: I have a question for the mail block on the option block program. I would like to know if there is a special procedure for entering ratio-type spreads on the OX website. Whenever I try to enter any spread trade, from the XSpreads ticket, it always defaults to the same size for each leg. When I try to change that, it gives me a popup saying that each leg must be the same size. I wanted to buy some calls but did not have enough capital in my account to also sell the equal number of puts to finance them. So I wanted to trade what amounted to a risk reversal on a ratio. I tried simply adding a leg to my call trade ticket without success. I tried the combo, straddle, butterfly and condor tabs in the XSpreads ticket also with no luck. I suppose my only alternative is to execute the legs separately and then incur multiple ticket changes. Perhaps OX need to ass a ratio tab to the XSpreads ticket? Please let me know if I am missing something obvious. Question from NTaleb - Why do you think so much options unusual activity is focused on calls instead of puts? There are just as many negative surprises as positive surprises lurking out there. Comment from Chitim - Just used the app to listen to option block during my flight to San Fran. Always had problems streaming your stuff on my HTC One because Android sucks for streaming podcasts. But this worked like a charm! I downloaded it ahead of time and it was ready to go when we took off. Definitely preferable to the inflight movie. Also, why does Andrew always sound so surprised to be on the show? Keep them coming!     Around the Block: There is a disconnect between realized and implied vol. Russian tough talk. SPX closing high…why can't people accept the market at this level? Is it time to sell S&P? Volatility in the sovereign debt market is astounding.  Astounding!
