Five summers ago on June 15th 2019, a group of homophobic “street preachers” and their white nationalist allies attempted to enter and disrupt the annual Hamilton Pride celebrations at Gage Park. Based on experience the previous year at Hamilton Pride and elsewhere in southern Ontario, anarchists and radical queers were expecting this and had organized to counter them. Wearing pink t-shirts over their faces and carrying a 30' wide 9' tall black banner nicknamed the Black Hole, the Pride Defenders confronted the bigots and formed a wall between them and the Pride festival. The situation in the park quickly escalated into an all-out brawl, with several Pride Defenders sustaining serious injuries. Despite the chaotic scene, the banner held and the haters accepted a police escort out of the park. Much of the fight was captured on right-wing livestreams and it created an immediate political scandal. The Pride Committee blamed the police for failing to intervene and the Police Board announced an independent investigation. For their part, the Hamilton Police attempted to frame the anarchists as outside agitators, attempting to link the (relatively popular) Pride Defence to the (very publicly unpopular) Locke Street affair from the previous year, where anarchists had smashed windows of gentrifying businesses along Locke Street. Anarchists who were still on conditions related to that earlier demonstration were targeted and arrested in the days following. Our guest today, Cedar, had her parole pulled ostensibly for participating in the fight – when it became clear that she wasn't even at Gage Park that day, the narrative changed to one of “incitement.” The police strategy to regain control backfired and the repression kicked off a month-long campaign to #FreeCedar and drop the charges against all Pride Defenders. The city was covered in graffiti and posters and there were several rowdy anti-police demonstrations, along with solidarity actions around the world. Today we're sharing an interview with Cedar for the five year anniversary of the brawl and its aftermath. We discuss some of the ways anarchists in Hamilton have tried intervening in Pride over the years, the independent report and police recuperation, the problem with hate crime legislation, the worrying increase in anti-queer and anti-trans attacks from the post-Convoy far right in Canada, a predicted wave of reaction following the next federal election, and what we can do now to start preparing and practicing community defence. On an all-new episode of Newsmakers, host Louie Butko is joined by Hamilton Police Chief Frank Bergen.Chief Bergen was appointed as the 36th Hamilton Police Chief back in May 2021, after serving three years as Deputy Chief, and before that he spent 36 years with the Toronto Police Services Bergen joined us in studio, for a conversation on the police budget after the police services board voted to move forward a 2024 budget of more than 213 million dollars -- a nearly $20 million dollar increase from last year.Bergen spoke on the budget ask, but we also went a little deeper into other topics, including the crime rate in Hamilton, use of the mobile crisis rapid response team, mental health supports for frontline officers, and the rise in the youth crime rate.

On the 50th anniversary of Adele Komorowski's death, I wanted to make an episode to discuss her story and where the investigation is today. After being murdered on the campus of McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, only a few meters from the front entrance of the residence she was staying in, detectives have fought for decades to bring this case to a resolution. Although the case is still formally unsolved, detectives and Adele's surviving family have come to terms with the logical conclusion from Hamilton Police. Police and retailers in the Waikato are pulling out all the stops to respond to an increasingly violent crime wave. Four young people have so far been arrested following three burglaries, a home invasion, a car theft, and shots fired at police early on Monday morning. Another six young people are being tracked down in connection to the offences, and the mayor of Waipā has sped up plans to install security cameras in some town centres. Before the pandemic, the fight against police and carceral forms of punishment already had a long history unique to specific communities. Throughout the pandemic people have re-imagined what a world without police could look like. After the murder of George Floyd on May 25th, 2020, global uprisings occurred and actions continue to be ongoing. It is important to recognize that police violence is not inherent to America and often Canadians believe such violence does not exist here. In this episode, Nashwa sits down with two organizers to discuss what defunding the police looks like in different parts of Canada. She's joined by James Wilt of Winnipeg Police Cause Harm and Sarah Jama of Defund Hamilton Police. This episode about defunding movements across Canada is part of a tiny series of episodes that we will be putting out on Canadian activism and social movements. Although we witnessed a surge in defund the police movements and organizing in the summer of 2020, such community based activism has a much longer history throughout Canada. This episode features two conversations with organizers and breaks down what defunding can look like in Winnipeg and Hamilton. It was an absolute honour to talk and learn from both James and Sarah. We cover tactics, tools, alternatives to police, and lessons from organizing and local context of the role policing plays in their communities. Local movements like these are part of the larger fight for a collective future we all long for. It was Bonnie's 45th birthday, wedding anniversary and the Monday of a long weekend. Little did she know her husband Gary was planning a small get together for her later that day. Everyone was home, Gary was waiting for a friend to pick him up so they can go pick up a cake for Bonnie's birthday. It had been a few days since 28 year old Monica Chisar had returned home from an overseas trip to Portugal. Back in Canada and back at work, a friend gave her a lift after a late shift and dropped her off close to where she was staying. This friend dropped her off at an empty parking lot of a beer store, some 100-200 meters from the apartment building where she was allegedly staying, just after midnight on Wednesday, July 11, 2018. This is the last time anyone has reported seeing or hearing from Monica. In the 1.5 years since her disappearance there have no sightings of Monica as well as no online activity.
