February 6, 2008. The U.S. Embassy Literature Series in cooperation with the Carl Hanser Verlag featured a reading by American author Matt Ruff at the English Theatre Frankfurt on February 6.

January 30, 2008. The U.S. Consulate General, the Hesse Center for political Education, the Center for North American Studies and the Swiss publisher Orell Füssli invited Dr. Christoph von Marschall, the U.S. correspondent of the Berlin-based daily newspaper Der Tagesspiegel, to give a lecture on "Barack Obama - The Black Kennedy" at Frankfurt University's Campus Westend.

November 30, 2007. Frankfurters gathered at the local city library, the U.S. Consulate's America@yourLibrary partner, to meet Terence Ward and listen to the reading from his book “Searching for Hassan: A Journey into the Heart of Iran.” Mr. Ward, who grew up in Tehran and now works as a cross-cultural consultant for Multinational Corporations, gave a ninety minute talk telling the story of his family’s return to Iran to search for an old family friend.

July 6, 2007. Helene Blowers, Public Services Technology Director for the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, introduced Frankfurt’s information professionals and students to the fascinating world of Library 2.0 at the city’s University Library. Ms. Blowers highlighted the increased emphasis on collaboration, sharing and fun (!) in the new 2.0 world, and encouraged the participants to engage their younger audiences in places like Myspace, Facebook or Youtube.

May 9, 2007. U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Dan Fried gave a speech on "Europe's Role in the World" at the conference "Rethinking Europe! The Globalisation of the European Union" at the German Foreign Ministry in Berlin. Also attending the conference were German Chancellor Merkel, German Foreign Minister Steinmeier, German Minister of the Interior Schäuble and other high-ranking officials from Germany and other European countries.

May 9, 2007. Under Secretary for Political Affairs R. Nicholas Burns met with members of the German and international media to discuss the agenda for the G8 Political Directors meeting to be held in Berlin on May 10. Under Secretary Burns stressed German-American cooperation on a number of important international issues, especially on the issues of Kosovo and Iran.

May 3, 2007. White House CEQ Chairman James Connaughton and German Environment State Secretary Matthias Machnig held a joint press availability with a group of German reporters designed to highlight US-German cooperation on combating climate change. Both underscored the importance of developing new technologies to meet future environmental challenges, and stressed that although the U.S. and Europe may differ in approaches to battling climate change, they share the ultimate goal of reducing emissions. CEQ Chairman Connaughton was interviewed by Phoenix TV.

April 23, 2007. J. Christian Kennedy, Special Envoy for Holocaust Issues at the State Department, spoke on the American role in art restitution at an international conference in Potsdam entitled "Debate without End? Looted Art and Restitution in the German-Speaking Area." The conference was hosted by the University of Potsdam’s Moses-Mendelssohn Center for European-Jewish Studies.

March 28, 2007. In a wide-ranging press roundtable with 20 German and international journalists, Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Eric S. Edelman discussed the United States's proposed missile defense system in eastern Europe among other topics of interest. Mr. Edelman is currently touring Europe to discuss missile defense strategy with colleagues in Germany and the Czech Republic. Following the roundtable, the Undersecretary gave two TV interviews on the same subjects.

The Deputy Chief of Mission Koenig, and Mrs. Natalie Koenig join the Timkens with a Christmas message in German and English. They recall the many different styles of Christmas celebrations they have participated in while living in different parts of the world during 20 years of life in the Foreign Service. This year, they are looking forward to spending the holidays with a traditional German-style Christmas.

At the residence, Ambassador Timken and his wife Sue talk about their Christmas experience in a short video. They express their appreciation for the opportunity to celebrate the holidays in Germany and how much they enjoy visiting German Christmas markets. The Timkens point out that for them Christmas is also a time for sharing with people who are less fortunate and they also thank people who are thinking of military families during this time of year. Carter Revard’s poems and essays are about his Osage roots. They tell his story and his family’s story --and the story of his people. As he explained to students at a reading at the Hugo-Heimann Library in Berlin-Wedding, poems "leave tracks." Carter Revard was born in 1931 in the Osage Indian Agency town of Pawhuska, Oklahoma. He is of Osage, Ponca, Irish and Scotch-Irish heritage. He earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Tulsa after winning a scholarship on a radio quiz show. As one of the first American Indian Rhodes Scholars, Revard earned his master’s at Oxford in 1954 and a Ph.D. from Yale in 1959. A scholar and professor of medieval English literature, he did not begin to teach courses on American Indian literature and culture until 1973 amidst growing national awareness of American Indian peoples awakened by the political events of the early 1970s.

As a member of the U.S. delegation, Mr. Connaughton was on his way to Helsinki, where the European Union and the United States of America will conduct a High-Level Dialogue on Climate Change, Clean Energy and Sustainable Development on October 24-25.

Five years have passed since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. On that day, nearly 3000 innocents from more than 90 different countries died horribly. We mourn all those who died. We also honor the spirit of the police officers, the firefighters and all those who stepped forward to respond with extraordinary courage and sacrifice. Their acts of heroism occupy a place of honor in our history and in our hearts.

A delegation of 30 young soccer players participating in the World Cup Sports Initiative organized by the U.S. State Department traveled to Germany June 21-23 to attend the FIFA World Cup match between Ghana and the United States and engage in program activities in Nuremberg and Frankfurt (Main). U.S. Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Karen Hughes joined the young soccer players in Nuremberg to attend the Ghana-USA game on June 22. She and Ambassador Timken held a press conference prior to the match.

May 28, 2006. Ambassador William R. Timken, Jr. received an honorary Doctorate of Public Service from the University of Maryland University College and delivered the Commencement Address at its graduation celebration in Heidelberg, Germany, on Sunday. In attendance were over 250 graduates of the UMUC, many of whom serve full-time in the American military. The Ambassador thanked both the UMUC for serving America's military all over the world and the men and women in our Armed Forces who combined a rigorous academic study with military and civilian service.

March 21/22, 2006. Ambassador William R. Timken, Jr. met the U.S. men's national soccer team in Bochum on March 21 and attended the friendly match against Germany in Dortmund the next day. Ambassador Timken was interviewed by a German TV crew after his press conference.

At a press conference on March 21, the Ambassador explained that the U.S. was proud to be part of this 2006 World Cup in Germany and that the event was "a time to make friends."

March 13 2006. Secretary of State Rice's Legal Advisor, John B. Bellinger III, took part in a digital video conference with German journalists in Berlin, Cologne and Hamburg to address misperceptions regarding the U.S. policy and treatment of detainees in the war on terror. In the discussion, Bellinger underlined that the U.S. is constantly working to improve detainee policies and procedures and that the U.S. has no interest in detaining enemy combatants longer than absolutely necessary.

March 13 2006. Ambassador Timken toured selected U.S. exhibitors at the ITB, at the conclusion of the tour Ambassador Timken welcomed English language students of the Hermann-Hesse-Gymnasium in Berlin-Kreuzberg. The students discussed a wide range of issues on the United States with a panel of U.S. tourism professionals.
