A new exhibit at BPL's Center for Brooklyn History explores the history and legacy of slavery here in Brooklyn. The team at CBH gathered documents and accounts from people who were touched by slavery in Brooklyn, and traced the descendants of both the enslaved and enslavers. "Trace/s" is up at the Center for Brooklyn History (128 Pierrepont Street) through August 30, 2025. This audio story is a companion to the exhibit, and it was produced by audio journalist and historian Ula Kulpa. Trace/s is supported as part of the Dutch Culture USA FUTURE 400 program by the Consulate General of the Netherlands in New York, and by the Alvin and Fanny B. Debora Medici-Guetta has inspired me since the day I met her. I could feel her intense passion for her work, her support of women, and for being someone not afraid to talk about her journey in life. So won't you please welcome her to our show this incredibly talented photographer & photojournalist, graphic artist, and documentary filmmaker. Debora was born in Rome, and the first time she landed in Los Angeles, she felt at home among other creatives free to express their art unfiltered. She now divides her time between here and Italy. Debora took time off, like many women, to focus on family. Her husband is famed artist #MrBrainwash, aka Thierry Guetta, and that alone is a full time job managing that level of notoriety. But a decade ago, Debora decided to get back into the game and began the intuitive process of reframing who she was, one image at a time. A return to making art meant embarking, in Debora's words, on “a big, long, introspective journey.” After several years refining her technique and honing her perspective, she would reveal a series of photographs aptly titled, “Out of The Shadow,” a haunting body of images that reflected Debora's desire to shed the trappings of the past and position herself as an artist in the world. She followed this exhibition with “Landed”, a series of collages that capture the frenetic and freeing energy of the world's great urban centers. As her vision grew, so did Debora's interests, so she started working with, and eventually joined, the board of directors for We Do It Together (WDIT), a nonprofit that produces films, documentaries, TV, and new media uniquely dedicated to the empowerment of women. Recently, for International Women's Day, the group launched “One of Us,” a documentary for which Debora served as honorary set photographer. The film, sponsored by Consulate General of Italy in Los Angeles, follows four Italian women who are challenging gender bias and discrimination in their fields of work. We will talk with Debora about her incredibly successful career, and how she encourages women to discover who they are. She says her work “prioritizes emotions over mere moments,” and we'll talk with her about that, in addition to her life, and of course living with #MrBrainwash himself. Lots to ask there. Please join my interview with Deborah Medici-Guetta on all video and audio platforms of #DeborahKobyltLIVE, #LittleItalyPodcast, & #LittleItalyOfLAPodcast. A member of the teams that negotiated the Canada-US FTA and then the NAFTA, he is a member of the Deputy Minister of International Trade's Trade Advisory Council and the North American Forum. Colin Robertson talks about his article: “Canada's Trade War Arsenal Should Include a Team America”. He says: "Despite Trump's ongoing provocations, Trudeau kept his eye on the ball. This time, however, despite best efforts, including dinner at Mar-a-Lago, it didn't work. Instead, we, and the rest of our fellow allies, are enduring Trump at his most pathological, flooding the zone with his pronouncements, seemingly intent on destroying democracy at home and abroad as he aligns himself with the autocrats".

Hexaware' billion-dollar IPO: A landmark return to the bourses

Mint Business News

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 12, 2025 7:24

Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Wed, February 12, 2025. This is Nelson John, let's get started. Hexaware Technologies Ltd, a global digital and technology services company backed by private equity firm Carlyle Group, is set to make a grand re-entry into the Indian stock market with a ₹8,750 crore (about $1 billion) initial public offering (IPO).The much-anticipated IPO, which opens on 12 February and closes on 14 February. Hexaware's IPO price band has been set at ₹674-708 per share. The entire offering will be an offer for sale (OFS) by the promoter, CA Magnum Holdings, a subsidiary of Carlyle Group. While Hexaware is well-positioned for growth, it faces several risks. It operates in a fiercely competitive IT services landscape, where it faces both established global titans and mid-sized local challengers; another concern is the economic slowdown in its key markets, particularly in the US and Europe, which poses a significant challenge. Any downturn in discretionary IT spending by clients could impact revenue growth.Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a three-day visit to France, A key highlight of this visit is his co-chairing of the AI Action Summit in Paris alongside French President Emmanuel Macron. The summit brings together global leaders and tech industry executives to discuss collaborative approaches to artificial intelligence for innovation and public good. In his address at the AI Action Summit, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the need for global cooperation to establish governance and standards for AI that uphold shared values, address risks, and build trust. Beyond the summit, Modi and Macron are scheduled to hold bilateral talks to review the progress of the 2047 Horizon Roadmap for the India-France strategic partnership.Additionally, They will inaugurate India's newest Consulate General in Marseille and visit the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project, a significant collaboration in nuclear fusion research. This visit underscores the deepening ties between India and France, focusing on cooperation in technology, innovation, and strategic sectors. The government is thinking about extending duty-free imports of urad beyond March 31 due to a supply shortage. Urad, a staple in South Indian cuisine, is already imported without any duty, and this policy is likely to continue since domestic production has been steadily dropping. For those of you unaware, Urad is a three-season crop, mainly sown during the kharif season but also grown in rabi and summer. According to the agriculture ministry, production has declined from 2.7 million tonnes in FY22 to 2.3 million tonnes in FY24. With demand increasing, a supply crunch could lead to higher prices. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced a six-year Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses to boost domestic production and reduce reliance on imports. The initiative will focus on key pulses like tur (pigeon pea), urad, and masoor (lentils). And as part of this push, the minimum support price (MSP) for urad has been increased to ₹7,400 per quintal, up from ₹6,950 last season. This move aims to encourage farmers to grow more pulses and strengthen India's self-sufficiency in food production. Imagine getting a call from someone claiming to be a police officer or a government official. They tell you that you're involved in a serious crime—maybe money laundering or cyber fraud. To avoid immediate arrest, they demand a fine or ask you to verify your identity via video call. Sounds terrifying, right? Welcome to the era of ‘Digital Arrest' Scams, one of the latest fraud tactics spreading across India. A family in Noida has fallen victim to a sophisticated cyber fraud, losing over ₹1 crore after being subjected to a five-day 'digital arrest' by fraudsters. According to reports, Mr. Chandrabhan Paliwal received a call from an unknown number. The caller claimed to be from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India and warned that his SIM card was at risk of being blocked. Shortly thereafter, Paliwal was contacted by another individual purporting to be an officer from the Cyber Crime Branch of Mumbai. The fraudulent officer falsely accused Paliwal of extortion, alleging that 24 criminal cases had been filed against him in multiple locations. The ordeal escalated when Paliwal's wife and daughter were also targeted with similar video calls, during which they were warned of imminent arrest unless a payment was made. Yielding to the threats, Paliwal transferred a total of ₹1.10 crore over the course of five days.. The government has consistently emphasised that "digital arrest" does not exist and has repeatedly cautioned the people of India against falling for such scams.  The 90-hour workweek debate gained attention after some business leaders and entrepreneurs, especially in the tech and startups space, suggested that working extreme hours is necessary for success. This sparked a heated discussion about work-life balance, productivity, and employee well-being. Amid the debate over a 90-hour workweek and work-life balance, the Andhra Pradesh government plans to implement a “Work From Home” policy, especially for women. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu announced the new initiative in a post on LinkedIn. He added that he's confident these initiatives will foster greater workforce participation, especially of women professionals, who will benefit through flexible remote/hybrid work options. The new policy comes after L&T Chairman SN Subrahmanyan sparked online debate after his undated video advocating a 90-hour work week that went viral. Now India already has a long working hour culture, with many employees in tech, startups, and finance working well beyond the standard 40-48 hours per week. While some believe extra effort is necessary for economic growth, others argue that sustainable productivity, innovation, and work-life balance are more important. What's your take—hustle culture or healthy boundaries? Let us know in the comments below!

Fexco, one of the world's original and most established fintech players, operating in over 50 countries worldwide, has announced the official opening of two new No1 Currency retail stores in Sydney, Australia. This expansion marks a significant step in Fexco's continued growth in the Asia-Pacific region. This official launch at the Westfield Hurstville shopping centre in Sydney follows the successful launch of another store at Westfield Liverpool in July. These stores are the first in a series of planned openings across Australia, with Fexco aiming to establish over 20 outlets. The Sydney stores will initially employ four staff members, contributing to Fexco's broader goal of creating more than 80 jobs in Australia over the next few years. This growth in Australia mirrors Fexco's success in New Zealand, where it has established a network of 24 stores and created 100 jobs in the last decade, including a new store opening soon in Manawa Bay in Auckland. These new ventures highlight Fexco's commitment to expanding its retail presence and building on its well-established footprint across the Pacific. Fexco Pacific already operates over 100 offices and employs more than 400 staff in New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, and other Pacific nations. The company is the largest Western Union master agent in the region, processing over two million transactions annually and offering No1 Currency exchange services and international business payments. Fexco's entry into the Australian market is not unprecedented. The company co-owns the PICA Group (Prudential Investment Company of Australia Pty Limited), which is Australia's second-largest property services company. PICA Group manages a diverse portfolio of 200,000 lots across 10,500 strata schemes, including residential, commercial, resort, and mixed-use properties. Neil Hosty, CEO of Fexco, commented: "The opening of our No1 Currency stores in Sydney is an exciting milestone as we continue to bring our expertise in currency exchange and payments to new markets. Australia represents a key growth area for Fexco, and we are committed to providing our customers with world-class service and innovative financial solutions." Consul General Rosie Keane, Consulate General of Ireland stated, "I am delighted to see the renowned Irish brand and global fintech leader, FEXCO, continue its growth in the Australian market. With over 40 years of excellence and innovation, FEXCO's Sydney retail expansion is another exciting chapter in an already hugely successful story. I would like to congratulate FEXCO on this expansion and wish them every success in this key global market". Lydia Rogers Director, Australia & New Zealand, Enterprise Ireland said, "Congratulations to Enterprise Ireland client Fexco on their launch of the No1 Currency retail stores in Sydney and their continued expansion across the Asia-Pacific region. As a global financial services leader, we are very excited to see them bring both their expertise and strong employment plans to the country that will benefit so many Australians and visitors". With over 40 years of experience and operations in more than 50 countries, Fexco's expansion into Australia further cements its status as a leading player in the global fintech industry. The company's relentless focus on innovation, growth, and entrepreneurship continues to drive its success and deliver value to its customers and partners worldwide. See more stories here.

The Congress followed suit by seeking an appointment with the governor on May 10 to “present a memorandum regarding the present political situation in the state”. Meanwhile, Congress Legislature Party leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda replied to Chautala's statement, quote “All our 30 MLAs are intact, but the issue is that his [Dushyant's] MLAs are running here and there. First, he should analyse if he has all his MLAs intact…it would have been better if Dushyant had paraded all his MLAs in front of the governor. Unquote. As Air India Express faces cancellation of 74 of its flights owing to an ongoing protest by a section of its cabin crew, Air India has stepped in to aid passengers facing disruptions, stating that it will run flights on 20 of its subsidiary's routes. The story of a filthy and dangerous train ditch that became one of the swankiest addresses in the world -- Park Avenue. For over 100 years, a Park Avenue address meant wealth, glamour and the high life. The Fred Astaire version of the Irving Berlin classic "Puttin' on the Ritz" revised the lyrics to pay tribute to Park Avenue: "High hats and Arrow collars/White spats and lots of dollars/Spending every dime for a wonderful time."By the 1950s, the avenue was considered the backbone of New York City with corporations setting up glittering new office towers in the International Style -- the Lever House, the Seagram Building, even the Pan Am Building. But the foundation for all this wealth and success was, in actually, a train tunnel, originally operated by the New York Central Railroad. This street, formerly known as Fourth Avenue, was (and is) one of New York's primary traffic thoroughfares. For many decades, steam locomotives dominated life along the avenue, heading into and out of Cornelius Vanderbilt's Grand Central (first a depot, then a station, eventually a terminal). However train tracks running through a quickly growing city are neither safe nor conducive to prosperity. Eventually, the tracks were covered with beautiful flowers and trees, on traffic island malls which have gotten smaller over the years. By the 1910s this allowed for glamorous apartment buildings to rise, the homes of a new wealthy elite attracted to apartment living in the post-Gilded Age era. But that lifestyle was not quite made available to everyone. In this episode, Greg and Tom take you on a tour of the tunnels and viaducts that helped New York City to grow, creating billions of dollars of real estate in the process. FURTHER LISTENINGListen to these related Bowery Boys episodes after you're done listening to the Park Avenue show:The Pan Am BuildingIt Happened In Madison Square Park The Chrysler Building and the Great Skyscraper RaceThe Rescue of Grand Central Terminal FURTHER READINGThis week we're suggesting a few historic designation reports for you history supergeeks looking for a deep dive into Park Avenue history. Today's episode features two segments, both of which consider the scale of technology platforms and their power over markets and people. In the first, Rebecca Rand delivers a conversation with University of Technology Sydney researcher Dr. Luis Lozano-Paredes about a community of drivers in Colombia who have hacked together a way to preserve their power alongside the adoption of ride sharing apps. And in the second, Justin Hendrix speaks with Columbia University Law School Professor of Law, Science and Technology Tim Wu, who recently spent two years on the National Economic Council in the White House as Special Assistant to the President for Competition and Technology. The conversation touches on privacy legislation, ideas about competition and scale, and Wu's observations on the landmark antitrust trial between the Justice Department and Google, which wrapped up its first week of testimony on Friday. The conversation took place at the All Tech is Human Responsible Tech Summit, hosted with the Consulate General of Canada in New York, on September 14th.
