Almost everyone's seen some version of this: You've got a great system in place that's producing measurable improvements, but your company gets a new division head or president or CEO, and some new shiny object becomes the focus. Ever wanted to ask an implementation person how they handle that? At the IndustryWeek Operations Leadership Summit this summer, an audience member put the question that bluntly to Marty Hallman, director of bearing operations at The Timken Co. Like most of us, Hallman's been through that sort of turmoil, and he explained how Timken keeps going with lean management principles, even when leadership changes. Joining Hallman was Sam McPherson, president of the Lean Leadership Academy. In addition to talking leadership change, they discussed how to develop leaders internally, how to implement production-improving strategies and how to get the most of the training time they spend with up-and-coming leaders.

Renewable energy provider, Octopus Energy has announced a strategic investment in California based floating offshore wind company, Ocergy. Ocergy designs and manufactures lighter modular floating. Foundations for wind turbines aiming to reduce the time and cost of building offshore wind farms. The investment, which is estimated between eight and 24 million pounds will help commercialize Ocergy's technology and fuel the company's expansion into new markets, including the U S, UK, France, Norway, Italy, Japan, and South Korea. Now, Phil, California offshore. It's going to be almost all floating, has to be. Does this make sense for Octopus to get in early and to basically choose a winner for a floating platform to move California offshore ahead quickly? Philip Totaro: Yeah, this is interesting because, there are a number of companies out there with a number of floating platform designs. So that said, with the scale that Octopus Group brings in general to any investments particularly those of subsidiary, Octopus Energy you just rattled off all the countries that they want to be able to go develop projects in. Most prominently, though, is Octopus has already co invested in some of the projects in the UK and Scotland, where they're gonna be building a ton of, it's I forget how much, it's 8 or 9 gigawatts of floating offshore in the next 10 years. Five, six years and then there's gonna be more, more to come in that market alone. Plus all these other ones you mentioned again. So this is, I wouldn't necessarily characterize it as they picked a winner. I think they're, placing one bet on one company and they're gonna see how it goes and. They are the type to be a little bit pragmatic and they'll want to potentially spread it around a little. But this looks like a promising enough technology that you know, given a lot of the lessons learned from. All the early stage prototypes I think this company is Ostergy is well positioned to be able to scale this technology up. Joel Saxum: Yeah, when you look at the Ocergy technology, it's fairly simple. It's not a high risk technology either. It's something that's been developed. It's been used in oil and gas for a long time. It's just a. Basically a triangle floater and that's all it is. So they're not taking a wild flyer on something here that hasn't been done. I think the next legitimate investment here or partnering would be make sure that you have a good mooring company as a partner in going to these floating offshore wind farms, because that's something we haven't had to do with fixed bottom offshore wind. But it's going to be a problem for floaters. Allen Hall: Timken company, a global leader in engineered bearings and power transm...

Serendipity led Jon Owens, national sales manager for Epicor, to find the automotive aftermarket. Jon started out in sales for Timken Roller Bearing in Canton, Ohio, and describes finding the aftermarket after graduating from college as being in the right place at the right time. However, it wasn't until he took over the NAPA Auto Parts account for Timken and started going to meetings, such as the AWDA Conference, where he truly recognized the power of volunteering for industry committees.“You're exposed to industry icons and you just can't beat that kind of exposure,” said Owens, who just began his two-year stint as president of the Automotive Aftermarket Charitable Foundation (AACF), and arguably, has become an industry icon himself. “For me, it all began at AWDA. I was smitten with it and convinced that industry volunteerism benefited not only the industry, but also benefited me personally and whatever company I was going to represent.”Since then, the list of organizations and committees Owens has served on is too long to publish here. Yet in his time at various automotive aftermarket companies, he has always been sure to remain involved outside of his 9-to-5 and has learned many lessons in business and life from the aftermarket professionals he has volunteered with. In this episode of AMN Drivetime, sponsored by AISIN, Owens delves into those lessons as well as his career trajectory from Timken to Epicor and describes his vision for AACF.EPISODE OVERVIEW How Owens found the automotive aftermarket (0:58)His college football career and what he learned most from playing the sport at a high level (3:46)Owens's mentors in the automotive aftermarket (5:06)His involvement in the automotive aftermarket organizations and what makes our industry different when it comes to service outside of your day job (10:48)His biggest lessons from his involvement in aftermarket committees and organizations (16:32)Owens describes his vision for AACF as president for the next two years (22:45)How you can help with the AACF's mission today (29:54)
Leslie is joined by the incoming President of the United Steelworkers (USW), David McCall. During this interview, they remember the late Tom Conway, former President of the USW, who sadly passed away on September 25th of this year. While the labor movement and the union both lost a great leader, thanks to Tom's vision and hard work, both are on firm footing and primed to continue the fight for economic justice and fairness for working families. Tom's legacy involves innovations and breakthroughs on a number of fronts: He bargained cutting-edge contracts across USW sectors. - He understood that companies needed to be successful so they could pay workers good wages and benefits, so where he could, he worked with them. - When he couldn't, he was relentless in his work to find ways to make sure workers' needs remained at the forefront. - This included the 2015 oil strike, which helped secure a number of important health and safety provisions for workers. - And a number of rounds of steel bargaining that helped stave off calls for concessions and ensure fair pay and high-quality benefits. But Tom understood that fighting for working families wasn't just about pay; it was about securing the future. - Early in his time as an international leader, Tom was instrumental in developing the Institute for Career Development (ICD), a joint labor-management training program, enshrined in a number of USW collective bargaining agreements, that offers members opportunities to learn new skills. - Under his leadership union workers and activists were able to achieve a major victory with the passage of the Butch Lewis Act, which saved the pensions of more than one million workers and retirees, including more than 100,000 USW members. Tom was also committed to building a diverse movement and many of his efforts contributed to building a strong future for workers. - He spearheaded an innovative organizing initiative connecting rank-and-file members with their fellow workers to talk about joining the labor movement. This quickly paid dividends, resulting in organizing victories in the United States and Canada, including some of the union's biggest wins in years. - These include 3,500 faculty members at the University of Pittsburgh who joined the USW, as well as baristas at Starbucks coffee shops across Canada, and 1,500 workers at Georgia's Blue Bird Corp. bus factory. - They join others, including waste disposal workers, professional football players, museum and library workers, high-tech workers, airport workers, prison chaplains and others, who all joined the Steelworkers' ranks as a result of Conway's initiative. Tom also invested heavily in building out the bench, and under his leadership, the union held its first international Next Gen conference in November 2019. - Under Tom's direction, the USW built out our Veterans of Steel committees to make sure – to the fullest extent possible – that the union was helping those in need, and making sure veterans' voices are heard. Finally, Tom fought relentlessly for both for fair trade and job creation. - This included working with government leaders in Washington to ensure that they enforced trade laws to prevent illegally subsidized and dumped products that damage American industries and destroy good paying jobs. - He did this work in steel, rubber and tire, and many other industries. - It also meant finding creative solutions, as well as working with companies and lawmakers to create jobs. - He formed partnerships and allied groups like the Alliance for American Manufacturing. - And more recently, his was one of the loudest voices calling for infrastructure investment. Tom will be missed a great deal, but his strength as a leader, and vision for the future, have helped countless working people and will continue to help countless more moving forward. The new USW President, David McCall, has a career of fighting for fairness and justice for workers that began as a member of Local 6787 in Burns Harbor, Indiana, where he worked as a millwright at the sprawling integrated steel facility. He joined the union's staff in 1985 and served as the director of USW District 1 from 1998 until 2019. Over the course of his career, McCall successfully fought to preserve thousands of jobs in the steel industry and beyond. McCall has also chaired USW master contract negotiations with Cleveland Cliffs, Republic Steel, Timken, Graphics Packaging and others. The website for the United Steelworkers is www.USW.org. Their handle on both Twitter and Instagram is @steelworkers.

With teams now pushing 100PSI of boost to hit power levels of 3200HP and more from existing setups, we're excited to see what Bullet Race Engineering's new RB hybrid block can do.Use ‘PODCAST75' for $75 off your first HPA course here: https://hpcdmy.co/hpa-tuned-inDarren Palumbo is no stranger to Nissan RB26s, RB30s, or Toyota 2JZ engines with Bullet Race Engineering having produced billet blocks for each many times over the years and using this knowledge the team has gone one step further to try and remove some of the weaknesses holding the RB back, specifically the crankshaft. Traditionally more torsional twist occurs in an RB crank taking power away from the wheels by comparison to the 2JZ setup due to having a journal diameter that is 7mm smaller. Realising 2JZ main shells would fit into an RB configuration it was just a matter of adjustments to tunnel size, stud location and designing a crank to suit from there which has been done via a Callies Performance Products Ultra Billet range crankshaft using Timken alloy steel.Along with these changes Bullet and Callies took the chance to make a few other changes including a longer snout with a greater diameter and wall thickness, bigger keyway and smaller big end journals which will take a Honda bearing shell helping to keep costs and parts sourcing for maintenance a little cheaper and easier. The flywheel flange has also increased in size by 10mm and gone from 6 to 8 bolts with the threads matching those used by many small and big block Chev flywheels, again just for easier sourcing of parts. For now, the power limitation of the RB going forward now rests squarely on the current cylinder head which Bullet is also working on, but even before they are available it will be interesting to see what a difference these changes have made when it comes to getting the maximum amount of power to the ground as possible.Want to learn how to tune EFI? A turnaround in the margin pressure faced by auto ancillary companies may begin by the second half of the 2022-23 financial year (H2FY23), analysts say, as they expect the industry to reap the benefit of softening commodity prices, and easing supply snags with a lag. However, higher inventory costs may continue to dent the financials in the near-term. "Despite minor relief in margins due to a cool-off in commodity prices, we expect margins to remain subdued in Q2FY23 due to higher inventory costs. We expect profitability to be visible from Q4FY23 onwards," said Ricky Kirpalani, lead sponsor, First Water Capital Fund (AIF). So far in 2022, key raw materials used in automobile manufacturing like steel, iron ore, aluminum, nickel, and rubber have dropped in the range of 16 per cent to 45 per cent. The decline, Nishit Master, portfolio manager, Axis Securities, said, could support margins of related companies, coupled with higher utilisation levels, and easing of semi-conductor shortages. New order-book, EV push Meanwhile, a bevy of car launches ahead of the festive season is expected to brighten fortunes of auto ancillary products. While Maruti Suzuki is scheduled to launch Grand Vitara this month; Mahindra and Mahindra, too, will see the XUV300 rolling out in September 2022. As per reports, around 10 to 15 new passenger vehicles are set to hit the roads later this year. According to AK Prabhakar, head of research, IDBI Capital, auto-ancillary stocks like Sundram Fasteners, Bharat Forge, Timken, and Mahindra CIE may rally around 20-25 per cent in the short-to-medium term, benefitting from a healthy order book and demand upsurge. "Tyre stocks, too, are expected to see some relief as Brent Crude oil slumps to $90 per barrel," said Prabhakar. That apart, auto ancillary companies involved in manufacturing of crucial safety equipment, may benefit from the government's renewed push towards road safety, provided over-regulation doesn't hamper sales, analysts said. Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, at a Business Standard event on Tuesday, said that the government will make it mandatory for carmakers to provide at least six airbags in an eight-seater vehicle from October onwards, in order to reduce road accident fatalities. From electric mobility perspective, Gaurang Shah, investment strategist, Geojit Financial Services said Exide Industries and Amara Raja Batteries stand to benefit as both the companies have invested heavily to build battery manufacturing facilities. On the bourses, shares of auto ancillary companies like Automotive Axles, Bosch, Fiem Industries, Gabriel India, GNA Axles, Lumax Industries, and Varroc Engineering have surged up to 36 per cent so far this year, shows ACE Equity data. In comparison, the S&P BSE Sensex and Nifty50 have gained over 1 per cent, during the same period.
