Vacationing in Dictatorships: International Tourism in Socialist Romania and Franco's Spain (Cornell UP, 2024) examines the political effects of international tourism in socialist Romania and Francoist Spain in the postwar era. Despite sharp economic and political differences between the two dictatorial regimes at the start of the Cold War, significant similarities existed as both states took advantage of international tourism to improve their image abroad and pursued processes of economic modernization to acquire hard currencies. By the end of the 1970s though, the two countries achieved rather different results in terms of tourism development, despite the fact that both shared many features in the 1940s and 1950s. By comparing the rise and evolution of international tourism on different sides of the Iron Curtain, Adelina Stefan provides a different assessment of the geopolitics of postwar Europe and that further refines the Cold War's geographies separating eastern and western Europe. As a result, Vacationing in Dictatorships reveals a new perspective on the Cold War that reveals not only the developmental similarities between Eastern and Southern Europe, but also the ideological struggle that pitted socialist East against capitalist West. Kentucky is famous for its bourbon and on today's episode, Adam sits down with Mike Mangeot at the Kentucky Travel Industry Annual Conference to discuss how Kentucky is using bourbon tourism to grow its international market. As the Commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Tourism, Mike touches on the continued growth he's seen in Kentucky tourism and his upcoming initiatives. Later in the episode, Adam and Mike provide great insights into experimenting with marketing tactics and turning potential failures into positives. "Yeah, we are more than bourbon. We're a lot more than bourbon. But bourbon is going to get them here. And bourbon is going to create the buzz. It's Marketing 101, what's your unique selling proposition? What sets you apart from everybody? And again, it's part of the reason, as we talked about on the international front, why we're leading with bourbon." - Mike Mangeot Kentucky Department of Tourism If you're enjoying the show, please leave us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts! International tourism continues its slow recovery to pre-Covid levels. Overseas visitor arrivals were at 3.23 million for the year to September, which is up on the same month last year, but well below 2019's almost 4 million. ASB Senior economist Mark Smith told Ryan Bridge that part of our struggle is that the global economy still recovering from Covid. He says the most important reason is that costs remain stubbornly high – New Zealand's a reasonably expensive destination, and airfares are still very high. There's a belief New Zealand needs to put its money where its mouth is to attract international tourists. Overseas visitor arrivals reached 3.2 million in the year to June but is still 17% down on pre-pandemic peaks. Tourism Holdings Chief Executive, Grant Webster told Mike Hosking we simply have to be more competitive, as other countries spend big. He says Australia's three major states combined have a $800 million spend – more than 50% on New Zealand on a per capita basis. Webster says Aotearoa needs to invest in order to bring people back, and we need to drop the expectation it 'will just happen' without work. New Zealand's tourism recovery has seemingly hit a snag. Overseas visitor arrivals reached 3.2 million in the year to June. That's up 27% from 2023, but still down 17% on pre-pandemic peaks. It comes as visa charges rise and hikes to the International Visitor Levy debated. Board of Airline Representatives Executive Director, Cath O'Brien told Ryan Bridge while other countries continue to recover, New Zealand appears to be stalling. She says the coming summer's airline schedule expects just 2% growth. O'Brien says it will bring fewer tourists, and it's counterproductive to steeply increase visa costs at the same time. My guest today worked for Club Med from 1990 to 1993. His first season was in Club Med Paradise Island as a DJ. He was working for Club Med for, get this, credit! Yes, he was part of the Arizona State University internship program, where he graduated with a degree in International Tourism and Resort Management. Please help me welcome, from Boise, Idaho, Kris Robinson! While he was at ASU, Kris would see future 3x Masters champion, Phil Mickelson, on the golf course! Kris was President of the ASU International Tourism Student Association, and he initially did not want to go to the Club Med recruitment meeting when they came to ASU. It was only at the urging of his favorite professor that he agreed to attend. Kris was swayed by the Club Med presentation, in which 450 students applied and only 26 were chosen (Kris being one of them), and the rest is history. Kris worked in villages such as Eleuthera, Copper Mountain, Cancun, and Punta Cana. He did everything from DJ, Sailing, Ski Instructor, Bartender, Snorkeling/Picnic, and Landsports. He has very vivid memories of his first season in Paradise Island with CDV Fred Leroux and it was Kevin Batt's first season as Chief of Sports. He went to his first season as a DJ, but Kevin wanted him on the sports team, so he did Sailing and also Snorkeling/Picnic that season. Kris lived in Greyleath, so of course I ask him about Paradise Island ghost stories, and he delivers! A natural storyteller, Kris has stories from all his seasons, so if you were an early 90s G.O., this episode is for you. Please enjoy! **My First Season podcast has always been ad-free and free to listen to and is available to download on: Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Samsung Podcasts, Podbean App, Podchaser, Spotify, Amazon Music/Audible, TuneIn + Alexa, iHeartRadio, PlayerFM, Pandora and Listen Notes. We've heard of commercial REITs, residential REITs and industrial REITs. But how about a REIT focused on outlet malls in China specifically? Our guest for today is from Sasseur REIT which is an SGX-listed REIT since March 2018, and the first outlet REIT listed in Asia. The firm's portfolio consists of four outlets in China, namely in Chongqing, Kunming and Hefei. But why did the company focus on these Tier 2 cities? Also – how does the REIT assess its reliance on China, given the strict lockdowns we saw during the pandemic? Meanwhile, the company recently reported its Q1 results, where distribution per unit rose 1.5 per cent from the previous year. The company attributed this to strong outlet sales boosted by pent-up consumer spending. To what extent has tourism recovered to pre-pandemic levels and is there a significant difference between the recovery of domestic and international travels? On Under the Radar, Drive Time's finance presenter Chua Tian Tian sat down with Cecilia Tan, CEO, Sasseur REIT for more.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"Finding Hope in Fukushima" is an article I wrote on MEDIUM - 2023 is the 12th anniversary of the 3.11.2011 earthquake-tsunami-nuclear power meltdown Tohoku disaster and the first time I had ever visited Fukushima. This podcast is an overview of the big takeaways of my 3-day consulting trip along the HAMADORI coastline that was most effected by the radiation disaster after the earthquake and tsunami of 2011. Key points of future tourism appeal: 1) great guides. On this monitor (trial) tour, we had Azby Brown- an expert from the SAFECAST org who has visited the area more than 40 times since 2011. Good guides are key to the success of this area as a destination as only knowledgeable and honest guides will be able to clearly communicate the complex issues and the past, present and future realities for the Fukushima area. 2) preservation of ruins and key sites as memorials3) engagement with interesting locals who are actively developing new businesses, engaged in activism and who can give a clear and honest perspective of what it's like to stay in Fukushima4) testing for knowledge, but also for safety and peace of mind of the visitors

But they have been put to rest by the authorities in India. Moving on, more and more international flights are taking off from Indian airports as people are willing to shell out more on leisure travel after remaining grounded for two years due to the pandemic.
