Riley and his Grams react to the latest Doctor Who episodes, as well as other TV shows and movies.
We watched “Better Call Saul” season 5 after we lost the recording we did about seasons 3 and 4. We talk about all three seasons and where we leave Kim, Mike, Nacho, Howard, and Saul at the end of season 5. Next stop, Breaking Bad and any movies we both watch and enjoy (but not ‘Cocaine Bear', which Grams did not watch). Leave a comment! Or, send us suggestions at wereact677@gmail.com. We watched the 1967 psychological thriller film “Wait Until Dark” in October 2022. We discussed the choice of Audrey Hepburn to play a blind woman; the Roach's choice to go all in with disguises; and how the whole thing could have been avoided if it weren't for the bratty neighbor girl. We watched the British series “Don't Hug Me .I'm Scared” in summer and September 2022. This is a dark comedy absurdist nonsensical show that parodies but also explores the ideas of young children's shows, defying all expectations. We watched the HBO original series “Sort Of” in July 2022. We didn't realize until episode 7 or 8 that the show is set in Toronto; it could just as easily be a U.S. city. If you're still on the fence about watching this show, it just won Best Comedy Series (Canadian Screen Awards), Bilal Baig won Best Writing in a Comedy Series (for the first episode), and Jessica Carter and Steve Newburn won Best Makeup (for the last episode); and others were nominated for many more. We watched the 2019 movie “Knives Out” in June 2022. With an all-star cast and some sharp decor, this mystery has more twists and turns than devious family members. Christopher Plummer plays expertly, Chris Evans rocks a sweater, Daniel Craig's accent is ridiculous, and Ana de Armas wins the day in this delightful romp. And don't forget Nana, who's sharper than all of them. We eagerly look forward to the “sequel” later this year. Leave a comment! Or, send us suggestions at wereact677@gmail.com. We watched the first season of the Amazon Prime series “Invincible” in spring 2022. This is an animated series based on the comic series by Robert Kirkman of The Walking Dead fame, with several characters voiced by Walking Dead alums. We watched the Netflix original series “The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window” in April 2022 . We finally finished watching the last five episodes of Doctor Who (series 12) in January 2022. We watched all nine episodes of “The Haunting of Bly Manor” over one weekend in December 2021. This is more of a gothic romance than a horror show, with some really great performances from T'Nia Miller and Rahul Kohli that win our hearts and minds. We watched the Netflix limited series “Midnight Mass,” which is a supernatural horror series created and directed by Mike Flanagan. We continue with the fourth episode of Star Trek (the original series), “The Naked Time.” Despite the episode title, there were no naked people, though we did get treated to a shirtless Sulu, and everyone was very sweaty. We jump into Star Trek (the original series) with the first three episodes from 1966: “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” “The Man Trap,” and “Charlie X.” We react to the show's introduction of the big three (Kirk, Spock, and McCoy) and a noticeable pattern in these first three plotlines. We watched the next three episodes of Doctor Who series 4 (2008), “The Sontaran Stratagem,” “The Poison Sky,” and “The Doctor's Daughter,” which have Martha temporarily rejoining the 10th Doctor and Donna. The Sontarans are worthy adversaries; Donna's mom saves the day with an ax; the Doctor has a daughter (/wife); and we don't see nearly enough interaction between Martha and the other characters. We watched the first season of Infinity Train, an animated TV series created by Owen Dennis (who also voices Sad-One), currently available on HBO Max. Wow, an extra long episode! We’re back talking about Doctor Who once again, this time covering five episodes at once: series 12’s “Fugitive of the Judoon” plus four episodes from series 3, “Human Nature,” “Family of Blood,” “Blink,” and “Utopia.” Grams wanted those elements in Fugitive of the Judoon that appeared in series 3 to be fresh in Riley’s mind before he watched the series 12 episode. (Plus we watched Blink just for the fun of it.) We watched the season 3 episode of The Twilight Zone, “To Serve Man,” on Sunday, October 11. We forgot to give a spoiler alert for this 58-year-old episode, but it’s available on Hulu. This wasn’t creepy or scary enough for Spooky Sunday, but it did provide some food for thought. (See what I did there?) We also talk about our upcoming Halloween plans, or lack thereof. Here’s the quote from the beginning of the episode that Grams was trying to remember: “This is the way nightmares begin, or perhaps, end. Very simple, direct, unadorned. We watched the 1999 movie “The Sixth Sense” for Spooky Sunday. This supernatural psychological thriller has some genuinely scary moments, outstanding performances by Haley Joel Osment (Cole), Toni Collette (Cole’s mom Lynn), and Bruce Willis (Malcolm), superlative directing by M. Night Shyamalan, and perhaps the most memorable twist of all time. If you haven’t watched this one in a while, pull out your VHS tape, dust off your VCR, and pop it in for an entertaining afternoon. We watched season 1 of the Netflix series Locke & Key, a supernatural horror drama based on the comic book series of the same name by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez. (Neither of us has read the comic series.) We thoroughly enjoyed watching these episodes together. Grams failed to mention another Black character, Zadie, one of Scot’s friends in the “Savini Squad.” She was still alive at the end of season 1, and we might see her again in season 2. We completely forgot our spoiler warning before talking about the first episode of the third series of Doctor Who, “Smith and Jones,” but it is over thirteen years old as it aired in March of 2007.
