In this episode of Cuadros Corner I talk to a local maternity photographer from Progreso who not only happens to be a talented photographer but a single mother chasing her dreams and taking her daughter along for the ride. . . Her biography is as follows: . . "Nayely Contreras Veloz was born in the city Matamoros Tamaulipas. At the age of nine, Nayely and her younger siblings and mother immigrated to Progreso TX - where Nayely is currently residing. At the age of 19 Nayely gave birth to her only child Genesis Contreras. As a single mother, Nayely was trying to raise her only child by doing anything she could as a waitress and surviving. Nayely was attending and serving in her church 'Catedral del Valle' in Progreso TX - in which she was given the opportunity to help with photography. She looked for ways to learn online and from her passionate grandfather Silvio Veloz. He was a professional photographer and photojournalist for the newspaper in Río Bravo and Reynosa Tamaulipas.. Nayely was also inspired by her closest friends and mentors; Gabriel Rodriguez being one of them. He always taught her about equipment and ways to improve and always be better, Johnny Davila always pushed Nayely and trusted her as he was the first to put a camera on Nayely's hands. Noe Vasquez jr, a Music Director also inspire her to learn more photography and has been a big help. . . The day that her father passed, almost 3 years ago, were when Nayely felt all her plans were lost. She was at her lowest and was about to give up her photography dream. Miriam and Rodolfo Castillo, some of her closest friends pushed Nayely to continue and eventually opened a home studio. Now living her dream job Nayely has new goals in helping others learn photography and love it as much as she does. Dom welcomes in Camden County Police Chief Gabriel Rodriguez onto the Dom Giordano Program to discuss how he and others leading the police department have revolutionized the City's crime rate, lowering it to levels that many never expected. First, Dom and Rodriguez discuss the Chief's history a bit, with Rodriguez telling of his childhood in the City of Camden. Then, Dom asks Rodriguez about the notion of ‘community policing,' with Rodriguez laying out the relationships that his officers share with the City residents and the repeated help that residents provide in giving information that leads to accountability. Then, Dom and the Chief delve into his call for more cameras in the City, with Dom questioning the potential invasion of privacy that comes with such an initiative. Finally, the Chief takes Giordano through his relationship with both federal agencies and his equivalent of the District Attorney in the County Prosecutor, and the importance of a good relationship for seeing results in an effort like the one in Camden. Hoy les voy a hablar sobre un libro de no-ficción que tenemos en la colección en español, Locke & Key: Bienvenidos a Lovecraft por Joe Hill y Gabriel Rodriguez. Nombrada una "obra maestra moderna" por The A.V. Club, Locke & Key cuenta una extensa historia de magia y familia, legado y dolor, bien y mal. El aclamado novelista de suspenso y autor de best-sellers del New York Times, Joe Hill ha creado una apasionante historia de fantasía oscura y maravilla, con asombrosas obras de arte de Gabriel Rodríguez, que, como las puertas de Keyhouse, transformarán todos los que lo abren. La epopeya comienza aquí: Bienvenido a Lovecraft. Tras el espantoso asesinato de su padre en una violenta invasión a su hogar, los hijos de Locke regresan a la casa de su infancia de Keyhouse en la apartada Lovecraft, Massachusetts. Una tragedia familiar hace que la familia Locke regrese a su legado familiar, Lovecraft, solo para ver que el peligro los sigue. Algo que me gusto mucho fue el enfoque del autor en la devastada familia Locke y como tienen que recuperar el asesinato de su padre. Conocemos y nos preocupamos por cada uno de los personajes, que creo que para mí debe ser la clave de las mejores historias de terror. También hay un diálogo increíble, no solo sangriento y tenebroso, aunque si lo estás buscando, esta historia no te decepcionará. Outro: Es todo por hoy. Hasta la próxima edición de Viajero De Libros. Today, we're chatting with Joe Hill. If you're a fan of the funny books, you know him from the phenomenal Locke and Key series from IDW (along with Gabriel Rodriguez's amazing art). If you're a fan of the prose books, you know him from a long line of keep-you-awake-at-night novels, such as The Fireman, Heart-Shaped Box, Horns, and NOS4A2. On this episode, in addition to all of that, we talk about his road to creativity and how much of a choice he really had growing up in the family that he did, perspective and self-doubt, his mountains of unpublished words and ideas, family rivalry, how his experience growing up in a literary family and being the kid of a legend has translated over to his own kids, and playing Scrabble with Stephen King.

This week, Derek and Andy W. -- fresh from their trip to HeroesCon -- return with a discussion of three new, fascinating, and...well, whacked out comics. But they're all whacked out in their own, unique ways. They begin with the release of Gilbert Hernandez's Grip: The Strange World of Men (Dark Horse Books). This is not really a new work from Hernandez, as Grip was originally published in color as a five-issue limited series from Vertigo in 2002. (The new book contains only black and white art.) But the recent Dark Horse release marks the first time that the entire story has been collected. What's more, Hernandez provides four new pages that function as the setup of this strange narrative. And what a weird and twisted story it is, but it's one that distinctively bares the mark of Gilbert Hernandez. The guys attempt to follow the various narrative threads, but making sense of this story is beside the point. What matters is Hernandez's imagination and the fun to be had slipping into his narrative world. Derek even argues that the story comes at a curious time in Hernandez's career, several years after the end of the first Love and Rockets series, the beginning of the second series, and at a time when Gilbert is reaching beyond the more realistic confines of his Palomar stories. Next, the Two Guys turn to Eric Shanower and Gabriel Rodriguez's Little Nemo: Return to Slumberland (IDW Publishing). Andy admits that, at first, he was a little hesitant about this book, thinking that it might be nothing more than a mere retread of Windsor McCay's newsprint classic. But Shanower and Rodriguez -- known largely for their Wizard of Oz and Locke and Key comics, respectively  -- are up to much more than that. Their Little Nemo uses McCay's as a springboard into an entirely new narrative, pulling in some elements of the earlier comic, yet at the same time bringing in new figures to present a long-form story. Readers may recognize similarities to McCay's pacing, his humor, and his innovation, but this project easily stands on its own. Finally, the guys look at the first issue of a new twelve-part series from Alan Moore and Jacen Burrows. Providence (Avatar Press) is another Lovecraftian tale similar to the team's earlier Neonomicon and The Courtyard, yet this one has been described by the publisher as "the Watchmen of horror." That's a lot to live up to, as both Andy and Derek discuss in their coverage of this first issue. But the guys point out that if the inaugural installment is any indication, this may not be mere hype. While nothing much seems to happen in this issue, there are actually multiple stories being told, with Moore setting the stage for a larger, disturbing narrative. Much like the allusive Cthulhu, there is an unsettling presence lying just beneath the surface of what unfolds in this first issue.
