Doctor Who isn't actually canceled, but its Christmas special is, and we break down what the Doctor Who cancellation news really means and which studio should take the franchise next. From there it's a full geek-news roundtable: DC's villain-driven universe, the real question hanging over Supergirl's box office, a new Transformers movie, and why X-Men '97 has everyone naming the childhood cartoons that deserve the same revival treatment. Frank, Thomas, and Phil also get into the UK's plan to ban under-16s from social media, weighing mental health, parenting, and whether kids will just find the next workaround. The episode closes on a love letter to Dungeon Crawler Carl and weekly picks spanning House of the Dragon, Hacks, Spider-Noir, and Masters of the Universe. If you came for the Doctor Who news, stay for the DCU box office debate and the cartoon revival wishlist. Joe, and Siege 31:50 The Under-16 Social Media Ban 49:51 X-Men '97 and Cartoon Revivals 1:00:37 Dungeon Crawler Carl and Picks Key Takeaways: The canceled Doctor Who Christmas special is not the end of the show, and we make the case that Prime Video could be the right new home. The bigger DC conversation is about redefining what success looks like, comparing projects to the right peers instead of measuring everything against Avengers money. Transformers Siege on Netflix gets a strong endorsement as the best Transformers property since the original. The under-16 social media debate lands on a hard truth: bans push kids toward less-regulated apps, so the conversation is less about restriction and more about mental health. X-Men '97 reopens the floodgates on cartoon revivals, from Gargoyles and Recess to deep cuts like Gummi Bears and Mummies Alive. Dungeon Crawler Carl is the runaway favorite of the episode, with dream casting and puppetry ideas ahead of the Peacock adaptation. This week we wanted to explore 1980s fantasy. But sometimes it's hard to recover nostalgia when present-day villains keep killing our favorite heroes. Last week, the BBC announced Doctor Who is dead. For now. Rest in peace, Time Lord. Also these days, Stargate fans are rallying to hold Amazon to its original promises of restoring that universe with original creators, and stop the ‘Zon from some “modern audience” reboot. For these and fans of other Star franchises, how do we mourn? Doctor Who destroyed by Russell T. Davies BBC, June 10: “BBC cancels Doctor Who Christmas special and Russell T Davies announces exit,” absolutely predictable end. Back in 2005, Davies revived Doctor Who serials on television. The series had “politically correct” moments, yet great writing. Writer Steven Moffat took over. The show got big. Then declined. In the late 2010s, political leftists demanded Doctor Who A lackluster showrunner took over. Fans rejected a gender-swap. Davies returned a political omnicause monster. He killed the Doctor. 2. Amazon rejects a fan-centered Stargate Variety, June 2: “‘Stargate' TV Series From Martin Gero Not Moving Forward at Amazon (EXCLUSIVE),” and fans were outraged. Original creators were on board, per the Nov. 2025 announcement. Now they join fans opposing this seeming ridiculous double-back. Amazon may want a “modern audience” show, not original fans. This is a universe more impossible than any sci-fi scenario. That's not how you grow a fanbase ever. True fans will grow it. Stephen finds this similar to #ReleaseTheSnyderCut. He's drawn in! 3. Star Trek/Wars still struggle to survive We saved this for last because fans everywhere rightly lament. Since our last episode on the topic, we've seen major updates. Mandalorian and Grogu bombed. Starfleet Academy was axed. Technically both franchises flounder ahead with illusory intent. Kathleen Kennedy is finally leaving Lucasfilm, owned by Disney. Star Trek showrunner Robert Kurtzman is likely next to go. Corporations aren't evil. But inhuman corporatism is parasitic. This “mind of metal and wheels” has ruined stories for Christians. But now the Christians are improving. These stories are decaying. We really can't pretend “popular culture” is just neutral ground. Activists do want to kill these stories and replace them with others. To speak truth, we should acknowledge the justifiable backlash. And then we mourn their deaths. But not as those without hope. After all, the results could be worse. What if the hijacking worked? Even non-Christian fans saw through the trick. And they said no. The “market” did its job, perhaps thanks to God's common grace. It's nearly like the Law rightly punishing violators. It is necessary. Let them suffer the results. Maybe repent. But retreat in disgrace. And if possible, may better storytellers rise up to restore worlds. Until then, let great story-worlds like Doctor Who rest in peace. Com station Top question for listeners How do you grieve the loss of fantastical stories you once loved? Next on Fantastical Truth One of the sillier myths in our culture is that “Most men don't read.” Sometimes this is a real trend. Other times it's wishful thinking because some creators don't want to make stories that celebrate boys and men. Still, we can look to fathers and mentors to train younger men, not just to love truth, but to love fantastical stories that honor truth. Just in time for the next stage of the Lightraiders tabletop game system, pilot and author James R. Hannibal returns to the studio to help fight dragons.

It’s only a week to Christmas!! Here in the DWP Campervan, we are getting into the Christmas spirit – by watching films that remind us of this wonderful time of year. However, given its impossible for us to sustain conversation about films (or indeed ANY subject) without refencing Doctor Who, James, Brent and Phil draw parallels between the films they’ve selected with Doctor Who stories! Can you guess the Who connection before they do?! It won’t be hard….! We’ll be back on Sunday with our review of the Finale to The War Between The Land and the Sea, and then again in just a few days time ON CHRISTMAS DAY – with our own very Christmas Special! If the BBC can’t provide a Doctor Who Christmas celebration, then we will! Hooray! Enjoy the madness!
We're celebrating a Doctor Who Christmas story from Big Finish today, with a Doctor whose TV reign was not as long as it should have been. No, we're not discussing THAT one, we're looking at Blood on Santa's Claw and Other Stories. We're joined by writer Nev Fountain.
In this episode of the Anglotopia Podcast, host Jonathan Thomas and British TV expert Tom Salinsky delve into the rich tradition of British Christmas television specials. They explore the cultural significance of these specials, the evolution of Christmas Day TV schedules, and highlight some of the most beloved and memorable Christmas episodes from shows like Wallace & Gromit, Doctor Who, Only Fools and Horses, and Gavin and Stacey. The conversation also touches on the nostalgia associated with classics like The Snowman and the impact of streaming on traditional viewing habits. Salinsky shares insights into the history of Morecambe and Wise, the role of sports in Christmas TV, and the unique approach of shows like EastEnders during the festive season. The episode concludes with a discussion on the importance of the Radio Times Christmas double issue and a promotion for Salinsky's new podcast, All British Comedy. Links AllBritishComedy.com Tom Salinsky Tom Salinsky's Red Dwarf books Radio Times Christmas Double Issue BBC Genome Project The Snowman Friends of Anglotopia Club Takeaways British Christmas television specials are a cultural institution. Christmas specials often feature nostalgia and beloved characters. The Snowman is a quintessential part of British Christmas. Only Fools and Horses Christmas specials are highly anticipated events. Gavin and Stacey's serialization contributed to its popularity. Christmas Day TV schedules have evolved over the years. The Radio Times Christmas double issue is a cherished tradition. Not all Christmas specials are successful or well-received. EastEnders often delivers dramatic and intense Christmas episodes. Streaming has changed how audiences engage with Christmas specials. Sound Bites 1. On why British Christmas TV became a tradition: "I think it was EastEnders that made the difference. In 1986, EastEnders devoted its Christmas episode to the Den and Angie storyline absolutely coming to boiling point... The viewing figures were phenomenal—something like 30 million. Half the population was watching." — Tom Salinsky 2. On the unique appeal of Christmas specials: "The difference between writing a regular episode of Doctor Who and a Christmas special is there will be non-fans watching at Christmas. The 14-year-old says, everybody has to shut up so I can watch this. And then uncle and auntie and grandma and grandpa are all in the room anyway." — Tom Salinsky 3. On nostalgia and Christmas television: "Nostalgia and Christmas, certainly for British television, seem very intertwined. It's a time when we want to hark back to the past... Even Vengeance Most Foul, which is a brand new piece of work, feels old-fashioned, has that old-fashioned charm about it." — Tom Salinsky 4. On why EastEnders goes dark at Christmas: "If what we tune in for is misery and torment and betrayal, then at Christmas it needs to be maximum misery and maximum betrayal. No one is starved of EastEnders. So when it comes around for Christmas, we just want to take that lever and throw it as far in the direction of drama as we possibly can." — Tom Salinsky 5. On the Radio Times Christmas double issue: "When I was 10, I would have read about National Velvet and that Old Curiosity Shop musical film in the Radio Times and probably opted not to circle them. We were a very middle-class household, Jonathan, so we didn't get the TV Times because that was vulgar." — Tom Salinsky 6. On discovering The Snowman: "I spent Christmas in England in 2013 and I kept hearing this haunting melody everywhere... I finally saw it and I was literally in tears when it was over. I'd never seen it before, but it just hit me. There's no words—even the book has no words—and it's an incredible story." — Jonathan Thomas 7. On the 1971 Morecambe and Wise Christmas special: "The 71 special with Andre Previn is definitely something a cut above. That is such a famous routine. They kind of stayed at the top of their game for about seven or eight years, which is hard to do." — Tom Salinsky 8. On The Office Christmas specials: "The way that The Office started out as this show which nobody really knew what it was or why it was funny... to then capturing the nation's conversation and ending up being the centerpiece of the BBC One Christmas schedule in three years is astonishing." — Tom Salinsky 9. On the first Doctor Who Christmas special: "Nobody knew whether that first series with Christopher Eccleston was going to be a success. We'd never had a Doctor Who Christmas special before. Just as Russell T. Davies had to invent how to make Doctor Who at all in 2005, he had to invent a Doctor Who Christmas special." — Tom Salinsky 10. On Christmas specials as the last appointment viewing: "We're just now used to using our television sets as jukeboxes where we select what we're going to watch. We're out of the habit of treating them like radio sets where the broadcaster determines what we are sent at what time... I think it's one of the nice things about Christmas that we just get a little bit of that communal viewing experience back again." — Tom Salinsky Chapters 00:00 Introduction to Christmas Television Specials 04:03 The Cultural Significance of British Christmas TV 09:59 Traditional British Christmas Day TV Schedule 13:22 Top British Christmas Specials 20:07 The Evolution of Doctor Who Christmas Specials 25:52 The Legacy of Morecambe and Wise 30:44 The Timeless Charm of The Snowman 33:21 Only Fools and Horses: Christmas Specials 35:18 The Enduring Appeal of Call the Midwife 36:41 Christmas Specials: A Tradition in British Sitcoms 39:01 Gavin and Stacey: The Power of Serialization 41:53 Sporting Events and Christmas TV 42:41 Christmas Specials That Missed the Mark 45:39 EastEnders: Maximum Drama at Christmas 48:17 The Future of Christmas Specials in Streaming Era 49:31 The Radio Times: A Christmas Tradition 54:20 anglotopia-podcast-outro.mp4 Video Version

This week, Simon and Eugene look at the 2024 Doctor Who Christmas special, Joy to the World, where they discuss whether Christmas episodes can break all the show's usual rules, whether the TARDIS jukebox will be replaced by a chair, and how Doctor Who should treat the politics of the COVID lockdown rules.

Surprisingly not a vehicle for a single guest star, this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special features a Time Hotel, Dinosaur shenanigans, Thanos glitter, a bootstrap paradox with a lantern firmly attached, and a stunning ten minutes where the Doctor does time at a non-time hotel. Oh, and yeah, a really famous star is introduced. Chip and Jason break it all down. Happy Christmas to all! Jason Snell and Chip Sudderth.
Good God, what is happening in Joy to the World, possibly the most time-wimey Doctor Who Christmas special to date. We'd expect nothing less from Steven Moffat, who stuffs a dinosaur, a bootstrap paradox, and a multi-Doctor story all into a holiday meal that's anything but a turkey. You might want to dress yourself in several layers just to keep up pace with this one, but be sure to curl up in your most comfortable chair before diving in. The year that was 2024 has wound down and instead of wallowing in misery, Kyle and Erik are talking about some Doctor Who Christmas episodes! Specifically the first two penned by showrunner Steven Moffat. Those are, of course, "A Christmas Carol" from 2010 and "The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe" from 2011. It's very much a story of greatness and lameness in equal measure. One is one of Moffat's best ever scripts, and one...isn't. Also! We're launching a Discord in 2025! Listen to the episode to find out how you can join the community.
Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes. Chris Evans will appear in Avengers: Doomsday. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the story late on December 9th. Evans is best known for his role as Steve Rogers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and retired from the role in 2019 following the climactic Avengers: Endgame. Doomsday will also feature Evans co star Robert Downey, Jr. as Doctor Doom, though Evans' role is not specified. As Mariah Carey might say/sing…”IT'S TIIIIIME.” Our fiyrst awards season nominations are here with the 2025 Golden Globe noms having been released this week. Smaller films took the lead on nominations with Emilia Pérez receiving 10 nominations followed by The Brutalist, Conclave, and The Substance. In television The Bear takes top place at five nominations (and yes it's still listed in the comedy category) while Only Murders in the Building and Shogun each have four noms. Netflix leads the pack of distributors with 26 nominations in total. The Box Office Achievement Award, which was new last year, has eight nominees and will include box office revenue and commensurate streaming viewership. No, you're not crazy and neither are we. Golden Globe nominee and frequent winner Jeremy Allen White has been casty to play Jabba the Hutt's son, Rotta the Hutt, in The Mandalorian & Grogu film. But don't panic yet, the actor is simply lending his voice to the character that was originally seen in The Clone Wars animated film. Season 2 of Netflix's Wednesday has officially wrapped production. Last week, Netflix released a first look image of Jenna Ortega in character and confirmed that the series will debut sometime in 2025. HBO is circling I May Destroy You actor Paapa Essiedu to play Severus Snape in the upcoming Harry Potter series. Sources tell the Hollywood Reporter that the actor has been offered the role, but official negotiations have not yet begun. Sienna Miller has been cast to star opposite John Krasinski in the Jack Ryan feature that is in the works at Amazon MGM Studios. Sam Richardson, the Emmy-winning comedian known for his work on Veep and Ted Lasso and Teyonah Parris Star of WandaVision and The Marvels are both joining John Cena in Matchbox, Apple Original Films' live-action take on the classic Mattel car toy line. The first trailer for the Doctor Who Christmas special “Joy to the World” has dropped. The Special debuts on Disney+ on December 25. Elizabeth Olsen is joining Julia Roberts in the upcoming thriller Panic Carefully. Panic Carefully is described as a paranoid thriller reminiscent of Silence of the Lambs and Mr. Robot. Kevin McCormick and Chrystal Li will oversee it for Warner Bros. Asa Germann, a cast member from The Boys and Gen V, is the newest addition to the cast of Scream 7. Variety has learned that Bill Lawrence is currently developing a reboot of his sitcom Scrubs for ABC via 20th Century Television. “Scrubs” originally aired on NBC for its first seven seasons from 2001-2008, followed by two seasons at ABC from 2009-2010. Apple Films has released the first trailer for The Gorge, directed by Scott Derrickson and starring Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy. The film will debut on AppleTV+ on Valentine's Day. Anora star Mark Eydelshteyn has joined the second season of Prime Video series Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and will star as the lead. Sony Pictures has released its first trailer for 28 Years Later, director Danny Boyle‘s long-awaited zombie apocalypse sequel. The film will be released on June 20. The box office trio of Moana 2, Wicked, and Gladiator 2 continue their strong holds, combining for a $132 million dollar weekend, breaking the record for this frame set in 2018. Moana 2 also officially crossed the $600 million dollar mark globally. Paramount+ released the official trailer for its original movie Star Trek: Section 31 starring Michelle Yeoh during the streamer's presentation Saturday at CCXP in São Paolo, Brazil

Tread Merrily begins with the Doctor Who Christmas special "The Return of Doctor Mysterio." While investigating a potential alien invasion, The Doctor discovers a boy he met years earlier is using his accidental superpowers to become a real-life superhero. But "The Ghost" leads a complicated civilian life that is now intruding on his costumed one as the invasion, The Doctor, and the woman he secretly loves all join him for Christmas Eve Day. Will The Doctor foil the aliens? Will "The Ghost" unmask himself in front of the smart reporter he fancies? Will we remember the events of this episode in a year? Erik forgets to check his mic, leading to crackly audio throughout. Both he and Justin struggle to remember the plot and stay on task as the special is, to quote another Doctor Who showrunner, "standard." Erik vaguely recalls it ended a particular year without Doctor Who, but forgot Nardole is the companion. Justin notes the two emotional arcs of the story do not intersect. He also learns the 2025 Gallifrey One guest list. The Berlantiverse influence on the tale is obvious. The Child Compressor makes its annual Xmas pitch. Wavering Scottish accents occur. Justin defends the work of Matt Lucas. Dragonball Evolution gets remembered and Erik continues to develop his Doctor Who version of It's a Wonderful Life.

It's Christmas, and for the first time since 2017, the Three Who Rule get to blather on Boxing Day about a Doctor Who Christmas episode, this one being “The Church on Ruby Road”! Yes, let's hear their thoughts on Ncuti Gatwa's new Doctor, Ruby Sunday, the mysterious Mrs. Flood, the somewhat odious goblins and their infant-craving King, and…a musical number. Plus a trailer for what we'll see in May 2024 when the Ncuti Gatwa era both begins and continues, Steven pointing out the inaccuracies of 1960s drum kits, and so much more! Another week, another absolute deluge of Doctor Who news has buried the Three Who Rule in minutiae. Amongst the highlights are The Star Beast news, Steven Moffat absolutely dominating a Best Of poll in DWM, the name of the Christmas Special being nonchalantly announced by Disney , Ncuti Gatwa looking dapper as usual in British GQ, and so…much…more! Also, we correct the record of onscreen Metebelis crystals, dispel rumours of a new spinoff starring Paul McGann, and kibosh an erroneous story about missing episodes!
