Episode 155: Barbara Nantais - One Night on the Sand

The Dark Oak

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 25, 2026 57:33

In August 1978, 15-year-old Barbara Nantais and her 17-year-old boyfriend Jim Alt were attacked while sleeping in zipped-together sleeping bags on Torrey Pines State Beach in San Diego, California, after a night out with friends who remained in a nearby car. An unknown assailant severely beat Alt on the head with a rock and log from a fire pit, leaving him with life-threatening traumatic brain injuries, permanent metal plates in his skull, amnesia regarding the attack, and lifelong PTSD. Nantais was brutally murdered—she was beaten, strangled, sexually assaulted, had one breast mutilated, and her nude body was posed spread-eagle on the sand with wet sand stuffed in her mouth. The case quickly went cold despite an active investigation, as no murder weapon was recovered, the crowded beach environment hindered evidence collection, and 1970s forensic techniques (limited to basic serology and microscopy with no DNA profiling) offered little identifying power. Similarities in method to the 1984 murder of 14-year-old Claire Hough at the same beach initially raised questions of a possible serial offender, but authorities later concluded the cases were not connected. To this day, the Nantais murder remains an unsolved San Diego Police Department cold case with no identified suspects.   Branch of Hope: Caroline's Rainbow Foundation is a UK-registered charity founded in 2002 by the family of Caroline Ann Stuttle, a young British traveler who tragically lost her life while on a gap year in Australia. With contemporary identification tools and resources limited, there was not much that could be done – even though both women are believed to be homicide victims. Thanks to IGG, we now know the names of Pati Lisa Rust and Patricia Falls Ritchie, whose cases are unrelated but are a stark reminder of just how many female murder victims have yet to receive justice. When she vanished after walking out of a Federal Way, WA Burger King in August, no one had any idea where she could have gone.  She was found miles away in the Puyallup River the next day – and remained a Jane Doe for two months. Once she was identified as the missing teen, police were months behind on their homicide investigation.  But even if the investigation had been timely, it's unlikely that her killer would have been identified – for he had no known connection to Tracy whatsoever. At the time, investigators couldn't come to many conclusions other than the fact the skull belonged to a young woman, likely in her 20s, and she had been murdered. Years later DNA & genealogy would finally reveal the truth; the skull belonged to Donna Ann Lass, a 25 year-old nurse who vanished on September 6,1970 after finishing her shift at the Sahara Hotel Casino. An unknown man called Donna's employer to tell her Donna had left town for a family emergency, which turned out not to be true. Donna Lass was never seen again. It didn't take long for an infamous serial killer, 'The Zodiac', to seemingly latch himself to Donna's case, possibly providing clues, and taunting investigators. For decades, Zodiac's possible involvement muddied the waters in the Lass investigation. All these years later, we may know what happened to Donna, but we don't know who was responsible.  This episode is sponsored by Mint Mobile. Police searched extensively for any sign of Audrey or her vehicle,  a 1994 Black, Jeep Grande Cherokee, New York license # X233UV. The first thought was that perhaps she had an accident or went off the road due to poor driving conditions, but there was no evidence to back that up, and searches of local roadways and waterways found no sign of her. Over the years, some suspicion has turned toward Audrey's husband who according to some reports, has not participated in efforts to find her. Rumors have also swirled in regards to a man with a criminal record whose mother worked with Audrey. Even the Russian mob has been thrown out as a possible theory in this case but to date, there is no evidence that points in any one direction, but police lean toward Audrey meeting with foul play.  In this episode, Mike and Alyssa of the Tragedy podcast, join us to discuss Audrey's case. They have covered it extensively on their show.   When she went missing, Audrey was described as a White female who stood 5ft tall and weighed 105 pounds.  She was believed to be wearing a blue turtleneck, dark green medical scrubs, a yellow gold necklace with a pendant reading "#1 Mom," and a watch with a White leather band and White metal face. Episode 173 DNA ID Replay Kim Bryant and Diana Hanson While Jess is on winter break preparing new episodes of DNA ID for 2026, we are airing some of our favorite one part episodes weekly in  what we call 'DNA ID Replay' episodes. These Replay episodes will air every week while on break with the exception of Christmas week. In this episode, we explore the case of Kim Bryant and Diana Hanson which originally aired in episode 37. 1979 Las Vegas, a weekday morning. 16 year old Kim Bryant was at a Dairy Queen waiting for her ride – and then she was gone. Her body was found a month later, sexually assaulted, beaten and murdered. A notorious serial killer was the only real suspect – he was executed in Texas, but he didn't kill her. When a tip came in in 2019, new testing was conducted on the biological evidence in Kim's case that isolated a male DNA profile. Forensic genealogy led to the name of a suspect, and further testing of his living relatives revealed that he was the killer of Kim Bryant. But naming him also allowed the LVMPD to close another cold case – the 1983 abduction, rape and murder of 22 year old Diana Hanson. The same killer had struck twice – at least.   To listen to every episode of DNA: ID ad-free and get other benefits, simply  visit our channel page on Apple Podcasts to get started with an AbJack Insider subscription. These Replay episodes will air every week while on break with the exception of Christmas week. In this episode, we explore the case of Susan Negersmith which originally aired in episode 74. In 1990, 20 year old college student Susan Negersmith went to beach town Wildwood, NJ with friends for Memorial Day weekend. Her body was found behind a local restaurant, half naked, shoeless, bloody, riddled with injuries, and with visible marks on her throat. Someone had taken pains to ensure she was obscured from view of passersby – yet her death was ruled an accident. It took her father 6 years to get her death certificate changed to reflect that her death was a homicide – but by that time, the damage was done. Even forensic genealogy, with its wondrous power to provide answers, may not be able to deliver justice for Susan Negersmith. Timestamp to skip intro: (5:44)In 2014, Maryland mother-of-three Catherine Hoggle had been struggling with her mental health.  Catherine had been involuntarily committed to a psychiatric facility at one point, and when she returned home, her family made care plans so that she would never be alone with her children. One evening in September 2014, Catherine convinced her father to let her take her son Jacob (2) with her to get a pizza.  A strange series of events followed, and the following morning, Troy Turner (the father of the children) discovered that Jacob AND his sister Sarah (3) were missing.Catherine told Troy that she had taken the kids to trial at a new daycare.  When Troy asked her where the daycare center was, Catherine claimed she could not remember.  No trace of either child has ever been found. Catherine would end up being indicted on murder charges in relation to her children.  This case has dragged on for over a decade due to repeated questions about Catherine's mental health and her competency to stand trial.   In December 2025, a judge ruled that Catherine is now competent to stand trial for the murder of her children.  The trial is currently scheduled to take place this year, 2026.Read our blog for the Hoggle children - https://truecrimesocietyblog.com/2026/01/01/where-are-sarah-and-jacob-hoggle-missing-for-over-ten-years/This episode is sponsored by: IQBAR: The New Year means a clean slate.  Time to transform frustration into fuel, and power your day with IQBAR.  To get twenty percent off all IQBAR products, text CRIME to 64-000.
