In deze aflevering van Op z'n Kop spreken Rick van Velthuysen en Marianne Zwagerman met professor Armand Girbes. Als hoofd van de intensive care van het Amsterdam UMC stond Girbes tijdens de coronacrisis midden in de storm. Terwijl veel artsen zich achter het dominante coronabeleid schaarden, durfde hij publiekelijk vragen te stellen over de gevolgen van het vrijwel volledig richten van de zorg op één ziekte. Hij waarschuwde voor de enorme schade van uitgestelde zorg en vond dat ook die patiënten een stem verdienden. Dat leverde hem kritiek op van collega's. Diederik Gommers noemde zijn oproep om het debat over de verdeling van schaarse zorg te voeren destijds zelfs "onverstandig". Girbes vond juist dat zulke afwegingen niet achteraf, maar tijdens de crisis besproken moesten worden. Wordt Girbes ook gehoord door de parlementaire enquête commissie? Girbes neemt nu afscheid als hoogleraar intensivecaregeneeskunde. En dat doet hij niet geruisloos. Hij waarschuwt voor een zorgsysteem waarin regels, bureaucratie en bestuurlijke belangen steeds vaker belangrijker lijken te worden dan het oordeel van artsen en verpleegkundigen. Ook buiten corona laat Girbes al jaren een kritisch geluid horen. In zijn boek Zieke Zorg en columns fileert hij de marktwerking in de zorg, de macht van verzekeraars en managers, de groeiende regeldruk en de doorgeschoten specialisatie die volgens hem leidt tot "halve ziekenhuizen" waar patiënten van loket naar loket worden gestuurd. Het Nederlandse zorgsysteem noemt hij inmiddels zelfs "kreupel en absurd". Wat zag hij tijdens corona gebeuren achter de schermen? Welke lessen zijn nooit geleerd? Waarom loopt de zorg ondanks steeds hogere uitgaven steeds verder vast? En wat moet er fundamenteel veranderen om de patiënt weer centraal te zetten? Een gesprek met een arts die zich nooit veel aantrok van de heersende consensus en die ook bij zijn afscheid nog één keer zegt wat hij werkelijk denkt. Luister mee en oordeel zelf!

De Rotterdamse app Ditto, vorige week goed voor een investeringsronde van 7,6 miljoen euro, belooft dat probleem op te lossen met AI. In deze aflevering van BNR Beter bespreekt Nina van den Dungen of een AI-app de communicatie tussen arts en patiënt fundamenteel kan verbeteren. Te gast zijn Tobias Polak, medeoprichter van Ditto, en Julia van Weert, hoogleraar gezondheidscommunicatie aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Tobias legt uit hoe Ditto werkt: de patiënt legt de telefoon op tafel, neemt het gesprek op en krijgt binnen enkele minuten een hertaalde samenvatting in begrijpelijke taal. Sinds de lancering in de zomer van 2025 telt de app bijna 100.000 downloads, won Ditto de Nationale Zorginnovatieprijs 2026 en kondigde zorgverzekeraar Menzis aan de app als eerste aan al zijn verzekerden aan te bevelen. Met de 7,6 miljoen euro investering, geleid door Heal Capital, breidt het bedrijf komende tijd uit naar Duitsland, Engeland en Spanje. Julia van Weert doet al jaren onderzoek naar wat patiënten meenemen uit een consult en is voorstander van technologische ondersteuning, maar wijst op een hardnekkig probleem: juist kwetsbare groepen, ouderen, laaggeletterden en mensen met een migratieachtergrond, gebruiken dit soort apps nauwelijks. Ze testte Ditto met een eigen consult over borstkanker en zag dat de korte samenvatting de kern van het gesprek, de keuze tussen borstsparende operatie met bestraling of volledige verwijdering, onvolledig weergaf. Haar conclusie: de app ontslaat artsen niet van de plicht om duidelijk te communiceren; hoe rommeliger het consult, hoe rommeliger de samenvatting. Pētnieks atklāj, ka pirmo iemācījies tieši šo saucienu. "Pati sarkanrīklītes dziesma ir ļoti augstas strofas, kā burbuļojoša svilpšana," bilst Oskars Keišs. Es esmu atradis sarkanrīklītes ligzdas, kas ir būrīšos, kur dzenis ir paplašinājis skreju. Tas nozīmē, ka viņš jau sāk atgādināt nevis dobumu, bet pusdobumu," atkāj Oskars Keišs. "Sarkanrīklītē var būt divi perējumi, katrā apmēram piecas olas. Un tūlīt pēc izvešanas no ligzdas jaunās sarkanrīklītes ir raibas. Viņas nav ne sarkanu, oranžu rīklīti. Because of our nation’s commitment to capitalism and the desire to be technologically advanced and leaders in the global business market, across the political and theological spectrum, most parents are interested in and committed to having their children go to college/university. Those students are also enculturated into valuing and wanting to go to college/university. And because of the extensive increase in remote learning, around 61% of students in the United States enroll in college following high school.  Also, because of the global economy, and because the colleges/universities in the United States are some of the best in the world, large numbers of international students seek to attend colleges/universities here. While things are continuously changing on college campuses, and while there are adults who attend college later in life, or those who attend after serving in the military, or those who attend graduate school, a constant for the majority of the  population of colleges/universities, including international students, is the post-high school 18-24 year old student. For that age group who choose to attend college on a campus, it commonly means leaving home and relying on themselves for a myriad of decisions for the first time. Developing the self-discipline to navigate those decisions is a part of the maturing process. Having some sort of community to assist and provide support in this maturing process helps. For those students who have a religious faith, a campus ministry, commonly sharing the same faith as the student, provides that community and support. Because there is a constant in the student population related to age, there is a constant in both psychological and faith development. That provides a constant of experience in campus ministry over the years. However, due to challenges never faced by previous generations, campus ministry currently being provided on college/university campuses across our nation has substantively changed. My guest for this episode are here to help us understand those challenges and changes and to help give a deeper insight into campus ministry as it is happening now in our nation. I have 315 total /240 LDL/70HDL/50 Trig. I am 5.4 height, 120lb and gluten free and dairy free for 13yrs and eat very low carbs and sugar. Never taken statins because they make my joints hurt but had high cholesterol for years but 300 was my highest. What can I take that can help and what should i eat. I feel stuck, I play for a soccer team but even training is too hard on my nervous system and leaves me wired.
