The sense of hearing is a finely tuned collaboration between physics and biology, transforming invisible sound waves into meaning, memory, and emotion. From the delicate mechanics of the middle ear to the neural pathways that help us localize danger, recognize voices, and enjoy music, hearing quietly shapes how we connect with the world. Yet it's also one of our most vulnerable senses—affected by aging, noise exposure, infection, and even cardiovascular health. How benign are ear pain and ringing? Is there a limit to how loud we should listen to music? And what can we do to protect this sense before silence becomes noticeable?In this episode, we are joined by Dr. Stacey Lim, AuD, PhD, CCC-A, an American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)-certified audiologist and Professor of Audiology.Dr. Lim received her BA in Communication Sciences and Disorders and German Language and Literature from Wooster College, her AuD (Doctor of Audiology) from the Northeast Ohio Au.D. Consortium at the University of Akron, and her PhD in Audiology from Kent State University. Currently, Dr. Lim is a Professor of Audiology at Central Michigan University, holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A) from ASHA, and is a researcher focused on cochlear implants and aural rehabilitation, informed by her personal experience of bilateral, profound sensorineural hearing loss since birth. Connor, 490 U.S. 386 (1989) is and what is says, as it will certainly be applied to this case. —     We'll introduce the legal concept of “officer induced jeopardy” which argues that police officers should be held liable—criminally or civilly—when their own, unjustifiable, or reckless tactical choices create a dangerous situation that forces them to use deadly force.  It posits that police cannot intentionally escalate a situation to a point of fatal risk and then justify shooting as self-defense.We dig deeper into the Supreme Court-crafted “qualified immunity” concept.As we examine the authority of the police to use force -- as it represents one of the most misunderstood powers granted to representatives of law enforcement by the public at large -- we will ferret out just what is meant in this process by being “objectively reasonable”, again, which very few people outside of legal scholars truly understand.—     And we'll analyze and break down frame by frame the fateful shooting.The Feds have failed to cooperate with Minnesota officials as countless details remain in dispute.  President Trump, just moments after the shooting, already put his thumb on the scales of justice by saying that the “agents had acted in self-defense”.This comes from a man who has lied on and vehemently demonized innocent immigrants who were in this country legally and in a legal and protected status in Springfield, Ohio, saying that they were “eating the dogs and the cats” there. Through careful reporting, historical context, and a clear-eyed look at the federal government's expanding use of force, this episode asks a fundamental question: What happens when political theater is backed by a gun and a badge?There is an epidemic of moral cowardice in this country. Understanding "Streets of Minneapolis"With Springsteen's latest single reaching #1 in 19 countries, we're witnessing a significant cultural moment. I'm proposing an exploration of the controversial, "Streets of Minneapolis"—examining it within a powerful American musical tradition that stretches back over eight decades.A Tradition of Musical CommentaryThis story begins in 1944, when Woody Guthrie (not Arlo—Woody was his father) wrote "This Land Is Your Land" as a response to Irving Berlin's "God Bless America." What seemed like competing patriotic songs represented something deeper: different visions of what it means to love your country. Berlin offered celebration; Guthrie offered reflection—including verses about inequality and hardship that rarely get sung today.Guthrie embraced a form of patriotism rooted in the Declaration of Independence—one that believes loving your country includes acknowledging where it falls short of its ideals. Writing during World War II and the aftermath of the Depression, Guthrie demonstrated how music could both honor and challenge the nation simultaneously.How Music Reaches Us DifferentlyThat approach influenced Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, and Bob Dylan—artists who discovered that songs could communicate social commentary to audiences who might not engage with traditional political discourse. A three-minute song on the radio could spark reflection in ways other media couldn't.Consider "Born in the U.S.A." How many of us have heard it as a celebration when Springsteen wrote it, in Guthrie's tradition, as a pointed critique of how America treats its veterans?
