Dr. Tamie J. Jovanelly (aka Dr. Jo) is a Professor of Geology and a Research Affiliate at Berry College, Georgia. She received her PhD from Kent State University, her MS from the University of Nebraska, and her BS from the University of Michigan. Over two decades, her research has been broad-scoping and impressive.  She is the sole author of the award-winning and best-selling monograph Iceland: Tectonics, Volcanics, and Glacial Features (Wiley, 2020). In continuation of her investigations in climate change, she received a Research Scientist position on a cruise to the International Territories of Svalbard in 2022. Dr. Jo's forthcoming book Volcanoes: What Everyone Needs to Know (Oxford University Press, July 2026), draws on more than 20 years of global research to provide an accessible exploration of how volcanoes shape our landscapes, climate, cultures, and travel experiences around the globe.With more travelers seeking meaningful, educational, and experience-driven adventures, Dr. Jo offers a unique perspective on why geology is becoming one of travel media's most fascinating emerging subjects. Employee Ownership Models There are over 6500 businesses that in some form participate in an employee-owned model, according to a study from Rutgers University. These businesses vary from an ESOP, or employee stock ownership plan, which is the most common form or profit-sharing, to a worker-owned cooperative, where workers can vote on things like a board of directors. Thursday on the "Sound of Ideas," we'll take a deeper look at the employee ownership model, and find out why some aging business owners are embracing that model. Seasonal Affective Disorder When you hear seasonal affective disorder, you probably think of the cold, dark days of winter. But for some people, seasonal depression arrives at the opposite time of year. As temperatures rise and daylight stretches into the evening, sadness, anxiety and irritability can emerge. Wednesday on the “Sound of Ideas,” we'll discuss how heat, light and seasonal changes can affect our mental health. A recent Gallup poll found 18% of adults reported having depression last year. And depression rates for Americans under 30 and lower income adults have risen dramatically over the last eight years. Antidepressant medications have been shown to help ease depressive symptoms. One common type of medication, called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs, were used by more than 11% of adults in 2023, according to CDC data. And adults in the Midwest take antidepressants more than any other region in the nation. U.S. Health Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. has been outwardly skeptical about the use of SSRIs, and last month, announced a plan to address the "overuse of psychiatric medications, especially among children" in favor of what he calls a more holistic approach to mental health. But psychiatrists have warned that some of the claims about the side effects of antidepressants are misinformed, including that there's an increased link to mass violence. And there's concern that this move could limit access to treatment for millions who rely on it. West Side Market updates Cleveland's historic, 114-year-old West Side Market has been undergoing major change in recent years. First, it went through structural change, moving from longtime city management to nonprofit management back in 2024, something that residents and vendors had been calling for for years to improve conditions at the market. Now it's going through a major revitalization, as once the nonprofit team called the Cleveland Public Market Corporation began, it launched a years-long, $70 million transformation project funded in part by the city of Cleveland and City Council, as well as philanthropy and other government sources. But there's still some millions left to raise to complete the vision, and many months left to go until residents see completion of the project. In the meantime, there will be a lot of construction to wade through as you get your groceries and support local vendors. Hantavirus is a pathogen that some rodents carry that can sometimes infect humans. The passengers under quarantine are asymptomatic. This incident is harkening memories of another virus that caused a global pandemic six years ago. But health experts say hantavirus is not the same as COVID-19. In this episode I was pleased to be joined by 9x French National Champion & 2020 European Ladies Amateur Championship runner up Chloé Salort after starting off her preparations for 2026 in South Africa on Sunshine Ladies Tour with that managing to gain a start on Ladies European Tour at Joburg Ladies Open.  Chloé started the game at 9 years old and was also a very good swimmer before taking up Golf full time. A 9x French National Champion at all levels & representing France in 10 consecutive years Chloé would also win European Nations Cup in 2017 as well as finishing runner up at 2020 European Ladies Amateur Championship in Slovakia.  Chloé would go down the States route for education and would enroll at Kent State University and would also have a 26th place finish at Lacoste Ladies Open de France as an amateur. She would turn professional in 2023. Last year on LET Access Series, Chloé would have 9 Top 25 finishes on tour and goes into this season with a good sense of optimism. In a special encore episode, we're reposting our episode from 2020.In this episode, we commemorate the anniversary of the tragic events of May 4th, 1970 at Kent State University, where agents of the state murdered 4 students and shot 9 others. Students, who'd been told the war was winding down in Vietnam, erupted in protest at campuses all over America when Richard Nixon announced the U.S. invasion of Cambodia on April 30th. At Kent State, a working-class public school in Northeast Ohio, protesting students and other burned down an ROTC building, a common target in the Vietnam protest era, and Ohio Governor James Rhodes, vowing a violent response, mobilized the National Guard and sent them to Kent. For two days the students and Guard skirmished, with the paramilitaries hurling tear gas and intimidating students. On May 4th, the Guard, unprovoked, started shooting into the crowd of students and shot 13, killing 4, from distances beyond 300 feet. These were extrajudicial killings and a sure sign the state would murder anyone who challenged its interests. The war had come home! Scott and Bob, who's also a historian of the Vietnam War and the 1960s and has published extensively on those subjects, talk about the background to the protests, the official, violent response, the aftermath at places like Jackson State, where 2 more students were killed, and the larger context of anti-state protests and their meaning, and lessons.----------Outro// "Green and Red Blues" by Moody

Im April 1970 haben Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young ihr zweites gemeinsames Album "4 Way Street" rausgebracht. Dass Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young unbedingt ein Livealbum brauchten, war spätestens seit ihrem viel umjubelten Gig beim Woodstock Festival im August 1969 klar. 1971 war es soweit: "4 Way Street" kam raus – das Live-Doppelalbum der Supergroup. Ein Album voller Gegensätze: rau, weich, akustisch, elektrisch und psychedelisch zugleich. Auf der Bühne und vor dem Publikum hat das Quartett immer gut funktioniert. Die Stimmen passten super zusammen, haben im Satzgesang toll funktioniert und auch instrumental hat die Gruppe für das Publikum das meiste aus sich herausgeholt. Hinter den Kulissen allerdings hat es immer geknirscht, erzählt der ehemalige Musikredakteur Christian Pfarr im Podcast. Da haben sich Crosby, Stills, Nash und Young überhaupt nicht verstanden. Was an vielen verschiedenen Faktoren und internen Konkurrenzkämpfen gelegen hat. Darüber hinaus war vor allem Neil Young oft einer der Streithähne, der zu dieser Zeit mit Depressionen zu kämpfen hatte. Auch wenn Crosby, Stills, Nash und Young gemeinsam ins Studio und auf die Bühnen gegangen sind, stammen die Songs jeweils eigentlich nur immer von einem der Songwriter der Gruppe. Jeder durfte für die Shows und die Alben Musik beisteuern, aber geschrieben wurden sie immer nur von einem der Bandmitglieder, was bei der eben erwähnten Stimmung untereinander kaum verwunderlich ist. Auch wenn wir dem Album den Stempel "Meilenstein" geben, darf man dennoch Kritik an dem Album und an der Produktion äußern, und die ist doch durchaus angebracht, findet Musikredakteur Stephan Fahrig: "Wir müssen das Album ein bisschen vom Podest herunterheben, weil ich finde, es ist relativ bescheiden produziert." Und auch wenn bei der Produktion des Livealbums und auch in der Qualität der Performance noch "Luft nach oben" gewesen wäre, trifft das Album den Zeitgeist, sagt  Moderator Frank König. Der ehemalige Musikredakteur Christian Pfarr ergänzt das noch, denn auf eine High-End-Produktion und Performance kommt es seiner Meinung nach gar nicht an, bei einem Album wie diesem und Künstlern wie Crosby, Stills, Nash und Young: "Es lebt nicht von der Perfektion, sondern es lebt von der Lebendigkeit." Auch wenn die Musik des Quartetts sich oftmals anfühlt wie romantische Lagerfeuermusik, wie zum Beispiel bei "Cowgirl In The Sand", so sind auf dem Album auch viele politische Botschaften enthalten.
