In an episode that you've surely been waiting for, Melissa and Todd discuss what Trump's election might mean for the border. This includes addressing the question, What is a “border czar”? The Donald Trump campaign seemed to know, spending the last several months claiming (falsely) that Kamala Harris had held this somewhat imaginary position under Joe Biden. And, then, after the election, it took Trump only a few days to appoint his own border czar, former ICE commissioner Thomas Homan, who might be the first such czar since Alan Bersin in the late 1990s. Melissa talks about Homan's background and his central role in a border disinformation network—known as Border911—that profits off the migrant “invasion” narrative. She even coins a new term: the MAGA ego system. This is but one point of many discussed in this podcast episode. Melissa and Todd talk about Trump's mass-deportation promise and the Democrats' uninspiring ironfisted campaign on the border. Todd talks about what it was like to cover Election Day from the Mexican side of the border. And Melissa analyzes the election results in Arizona. As always, there is a bit of a media critique and a recommendation on where to look for hope and solutions: the border communities themselves. Please feel free to use the comment section as a discussion forum for any of your own concerns, thoughts, or observations about the election and what's to come. We appreciate the collective knowledge and wisdom of our subscribers. Also, we wanted to let you know that we will be pausing for a week for the Thanksgiving holiday. While both candidates continue to crisscross the nation's battlegrounds, Vice President Harris is also doing something former President Trump is not: interviews in traditional and new media. This week, Republican communications veteran Brendan Buck joins former Senator Claire McCaskill to look at the media strategies of both campaigns, and why Trump continues to derail GOP efforts to embrace early voting. Then, former Border Czar, Alan Bersin, speaks to an 80% reduction in border crossings since the peak last December, why the failed bipartisan border bill was smart legislation and what a second Trump term would look like in practice for immigration reform. And Claire and Brendan end by batting around whether Coach Tim Walz is flipping the script on decades of Republicans decrying that Democrats are Ivy League elites, forming a new voting coalition in the process.Further Reading: Here is the POLITICO Magazine piece Claire and Brendan were talking about:The Overlooked Demographic That Is a Huge Opportunity for DemocratsWant to listen to this show without ads? In this episode of Simply Trade, Alan Bersin continues his discussion from Part 1 on the evolution of supply chain security and trade compliance. Major topics covered include moving from federated search to federated learning, building supply chain visibility, engaging the C-suite, and strengthening partnerships between government and the private sector. Key Discussion Points: - Alan Bersin discussed the evolution from the federated search model used by CBP to the new paradigm of federated learning being developed by Altana. Federated learning allows risk signals to be shared without commingling private data. - An example was provided of how federated search could be used with a company like Nike to validate supply chain information on a shipment of branded goods. - The importance of supply chain visibility beyond the first tier of suppliers was highlighted, especially with regulations like the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act. - Actions the private sector can take to engage C-suite executives on compliance transformation included assessing supply chain visibility and available technologies. - Companies should monitor indicators like increases in CBP inquiries (CF28s) and enforcement actions (CF29s) that may point to gaps requiring attention. - Geopolitical variables like US-China tensions and potential conflict over Taiwan could introduce major disruptions, emphasizing the need for agile, data-driven supply chain risk management. - Partnership between government and the private sector was stressed as critical to effectively address compliance challenges through a federated learning approach.
