His most recent book is Dangerous Memory: Coming of Age in the Decade of Greed, published by House of Anansi in 2024. Author and activist Naomi Klein has called the book "an extraordinary read from a true Canadian original.”Charlie and I talk about the new pope and the future of the federal NDP, about how writing became a necessary activity during his time in Parliament, and about his work-in-progress, which examines our dystopic political present through the lens of the 1930s.This podcast is produced and hosted by Nathan Whitlock, in partnership with The Walrus.Music: "simple-hearted thing" by Alex Lukashevsky. After announcing that he would not seek re-election as the NDP Member of Parliament for Timmins–James Bay, Charlie Angus has stepped into a new role — as a vocal leader in what he calls Canada's “resistance” against U.S. President Donald Trump, fascism, and rising threats to democracy. This week on rabble radio, Charlie Angus joins rabble editor Nick Seebruch to discuss The Resistance, the growing threat of “maple MAGA,” and how everyday Canadians are pushing back against creeping U.S. influence and far-right politics in their own communities. About our guest Charlie Angus is the former Member of Parliament for Timmins-James Bay, serving two decades from his first election in 2004. He has been the NDP critic for Ethics, Natural Resources, FedNor, Indigenous Youth, Income Inequality and Affordability, and Deputy Critic for Labour. Charlie is a member of the Council of Canadians and was instrumental in developing the Pledge for Canadians. He is the author of nine books, including the most recent, Dangerous Memory. Charlie is a songwriter, musician and lead singer with the Juno-nominated Grievous Angels. He is a grassroots activist leading The Resistance. Guest: Ken Greenberg, urban designer and co-founder of Elbows Up Toronto “This is not a trade war,” Charlie Angus said to a packed crowd at a church this week, “it's an attack on who we are as people.” A lot of Canadians have been feeling that recently, as U.S. President Donald Trump not only imposes tariffs on us, but talks about taking our country over. The response in the public is like something few of us have seen, a swelling patriotism. But a lot of us have also been feeling a sense that while we want to do something, we aren't sure how, beyond buying Canadian at the grocery store. Ken Greenberg, who originally came to Toronto as a Vietnam war resistor before a career in public life as a planner and designer, is co-founder of a group called 'Elbows Up Toronto' aiming to organize people to turn those feelings into grassroots action. Their Monday night meetings are part rally, part brainstorming session, and serve as what Greenberg calls a “clearing house” where people can trade information and strategy and coordinate for further action. It is, he says, a chance to realize what Canadian culture really means (and can mean), and to emerge a better, stronger country for it. This episode was produced by Julia De Laurentiis Johnston, Ed Keenan and Paulo Marques.

Today we're joined by none other than the Honourable Charlie Angus, longtime Canadian Member of Parliament for the enormous federal riding of Timmins-James Bay in Northern Ontario. Charlie - who some call the Canadian Bernie Sanders - is a diehard New Democrat. For those who don't know, the New Democratic Party is essentially the Canadian labour party; built thanks to organized labour and unionized working class workers and plenty of democratic socialists. It's the party that's led today by Jagmeet Singh, but was previously led by the late Ed Broadbent, the late Jack Layton, and none other than the father of Canadian Medicare: the late Tommy Douglas. Charlie Angus' riding is unique in that it is very Indigenous, very vast and resource rich, very working class, and was once dominated by little coal mining towns like the one Charlie comes from, Cobalt. After twenty years of aggressive impassioned face offs with The Man in Ottawa, this rugged reformed anarchist turned democratic socialist is laying the groundwork for his exit… stage left. Our thanks to Charlie Angus for sharing his fascinating story with us.
This week on Planet Haliburton, Charlie Angus, the NDP Member of Parliament for the current Federal Riding of Timmins, James Bay, which covers an area greater than a quarter of Ontario's entire land mass is our guest. In addition to that “day job”, the Honourable Member is a practicing musician – with the iconic band The Grievous Angels - and the author of 8, soon to be 9, books. His 8th book entitled “Cobalt: The Making of a Mining Superpower”, is a fascinating look at the role his adopted home town of Cobalt, Ontario played in making Canada the world's preeminent resource extraction superpower it is today. This interview highlights some of the key themes in Cobalt including the outrageous power and excess of wealthy mine owners and related state-sponsored attempts to steal Indigenous Lands. At the same time, Angus foregrounds the amazing level of solidarity and resistance to corporate power and colonialism put up by Indigenous People, miners and the Union they built to defend themselves. This is not the “Empire Ontario” history we were taught in school that's embedded in our national myths and the truths they hide. This is the Real Deal.
After 20 years representing Timmons, Ontario, federal NDP MP Charlie Angus announced last week that he's leaving politics. Angus has also spent much of his career fighting for indigenous rights, particularly for Indigenous children. He's also served in the critic role for labour, agriculture and digital issues.Today, Charlie Angus on his career and departure from politics, as well as the future of the NDP and the popularity of Pierre Poilievre.
Three NDP MPs – including longtime party stalwart Charlie Angus – have announced today they aren't seeking re-election, with Angus acknowledging the beginning of a new “political era.” True North's Andrew Lawton says it's no surprise, as the latest polling shows Conservatives could make serious gains even in NDP ridings, including Angus'. The public inquiry into foreign interference is underway, vindicating past reporting that the Liberals were the beneficiary of assistance from the Chinese regime. Former Conservative MP Kenny Chiu joins to discuss. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has conceded that a “massive spike” in temporary residents in Canada has been “far beyond” what the country can absorb, but his former immigration minister, Sean Fraser, says the federal government isn't to blame for this, but rather businesses that have made use of temporary foreign workers. Trudeau's about-face on immigration has left an opening for a real conservation about the issue in the next election – but will political leaders have the courage to have one? Macdonald-Laurier Institute researcher Joe Adam George joins to discuss. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Three NDP MPs, Charlie Angus, Rachel Blaney, and Carol Hughes, have declared they will not seek re-election. Plus, a city council meeting in British Columbia became chaotic over a controversial residential schools book published by True North, sparking calls for the mayor's resignation. And former leader Erin O'Toole says the Conservatives lost the last federal election by being on the “wrong side of public opinion on the vaccine mandate issue.” Tune into The Daily Brief with Cosmin Dzsurdzsa and William McBeath! This Matters is pleased to publish episodes of the Toronto Star's podcast, "Road Trip: Electric Avenues," every Saturday. The next episode will be available next week here, or already in the Road Trip feed. Ontario is virtually unique in the world. Thanks to plentiful natural resources, clean energy and a large automotive sector, it has every stage in the EV supply chain right here at home. In theory, the province could mine the metals, make the batteries, produce the steel and assemble the electric car entirely in the province. But to plot a way to a more prosperous and environmentally responsible future, we need to look at our past. That's why we headed to Cobalt, one of Ontario's biggest mining boom towns, where great wealth was hauled out of the ground for more than a century, and now, very little remains. In episode three, we meet up with Charlie Angus, the local MP, former punk rocker, journalist and amateur historian. Toronto Star photographer Steve Russell and climate change reporter Marco Chown Oved went on a road trip through northern Ontario in the dead of winter. It was cold, blizzarding and icy. They travelled 2,300 km during the coldest week of the year. And they did it in an electric vehicle (EV).

This week's The Line Podcast, recorded on Feb. 16, 2024, sees Matt Gurney and Jen Gerson talk about federal environment minister Steven Guilbeault's bizarre statement promising no new federal funding for big new road projects. And, yes, we know that roads fall under provincial and municipal jurisdiction — as does housing, energy policy, health care, and a host of other issues in which the feds do not hesitate to involve themselves. Also, if electric vehicles aren't the answer, why are we investing billions of taxpayer dollars into subsidized EV factories, while also phasing out the sale of internal combustion engine cars, Mr. Guilbeault? Then the dynamic duo go on to discuss Gerson's bizarre testimony at the Heritage committee. We think they want the media to host a party to discuss the state of the media and to be invited — to which we say: "And who is paying the drinks tab, sir?"The NDP's Charlie Angus is proposing a new law to ban oil and gas advertising — which is making us re-think bans on tobacco advertising. Turns out, it was a slippery slope! Smoke if you get 'em?Lastly, The Line team talks about a pro-Palestinian protest that just happened to proclaim the joys of intifada in front of a historically Jewish hospital — and the resentment of being asked to ignore the evidence of our own eyes. #EV #Roads #StevenGuilbeault #TheLine #MattGurney #JenGerson #NationalMediaForum #Mt.Sinai #CRTC #HeritageCommittee #Canada #Politics #Poilievre #Trudeau

In this episode: Timmins—James Bay NDP MP Charlie Angus, South Okanagan—West Kootenay NDP MP Richard Cannings, Skeena—Bulkley Valley NDP MP Taylor Bachrach, Abacus Data CEO David Coletto, Traxxion Strategies President Karl Bélanger, Canadian Strategy Group senior manager of public affairs Sally Housser, University of Saskatchewan Political Studies Professor David McGrane,, St-John's East riding association president Amanda Will, Jason Arnold, of the United Steelworkers Local 7619 at the Highland Valley Copper Mine, and longtime New Democrat and socialist caucus co-chair Barry Weisleder. Hosted by Althia Raj. This weekend as federal New Democrats gather in Hamilton for the party's first in-person convention in five years, we'll take stock of the NDP's current challenges and review the leadership of Jagmeet Singh. Six years ago, when Singh took over the party, many hoped he'd be able to stop the bleeding of NDP votes to the Liberal party. But instead of growing the party's caucus, Singh lost 20 seats in his first election and was only able to gain one more seat in his last campaign. Now, the NDP's leader faces another leadership review. One that's being held in the context of the party's supply and confidence agreement with the Liberal party. Will New Democrats throw their support behind their leader, or will cracks emerge this weekend as some members fear a closer alignment with an unpopular federal government? But before we tackle that question, we'll first hear from three NDP MPs, whose ridings are high on Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre's target list, on why the Official Opposition leader sees opportunity in their communities and how they intend to fight back. Then we'll sit down with Abacus Data CEO David Coletto for a look at the numbers and what they reveal about the party's support and the popularity of the NDP pact with the Liberals. And discuss it all with Karl Bélanger, the party's former national director and principal secretary to former NDP leader Thomas Mulcair, Sally Housser, a former NDP strategist in Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba, and Ottawa, and David McGrane, a political studies professor at the University of Saskatchewan and the author of the book “The New NDP: Moderation, Modernization and Political Marketing.” We'll also hear from three NDP convention delegates: St-John's East riding association president Amanda Will, United Steelworker local executive Jason Arnold, and the co-chair of the party's socialist caucus Barry Weisleder. This week on The Rupa Subramanya Show, Rupa reflects on the response to her bombshell story which proved that the federal government's vaccine mandates were not based on science, but were merely political. Since breaking the story, Rupa describes the successes and the obstacles that have risen, including having the story picked up by the National Post and the Toronto Sun. Rupa notes that despite the gravity of the story, there is still silence from the legacy media. Instead, two MPs from the Liberal-NDP government Mark Gerretsen and Charlie Angus have accused Rupa of spreading lies and conservative propaganda. Rupa provides an analysis on her story and what it will mean when MPs return to Parliament in September.Watch The Rupa Subramanya Show!Support the show: http://donate.tnc.newsSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

He shines a light on how the fascinating, and disturbing, history of a small mining town in Ontario, aptly named Cobalt, is tied up in the genocidal, and ecocidal, history of the nation-state of Canada, and its outsized role in the global mining industry today. What does a small town in northern Ontario have to with Canada's rise to becoming the world's reigning mining superpower? How is cobalt, this "demonic" metal, tied to some of the most horrific crimes of settler-colonialism and financial, extractive capitalism in the modern era? “The tale of the early-twentieth-century mining rush at Cobalt has been told as a settler's adventure, but Indigenous people had already been trading in metals from the region for two thousand years. And the events that happened here — the theft of Indigenous lands, the exploitation of a multicultural workforce, and the destruction of the natural environment — established a template for resource extraction that has been exported around the world.” Charles Joseph Angus is a Canadian author, journalist, broadcaster, musician and politician. He has been the Federal Member of Parliament (MP) for the riding of Timmins-James Bay since 2004. He is a member of the New Democratic Party and currently serves as the Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics and is the NDP Critic for Indigenous and Northern Affairs (Youth). Charlie ran as a candidate in the 2017 NDP Federal Leadership Race. Charlie lives in Cobalt, Ontario with his family.
