David Young spent many years in California, but lives in Colorado Springs now. He mentioned that things outside of work are very important to him, as they are the soil from which he brings fruit to bear in his work. He's married and loving living in the Rockies. He and his wife love to ski hike and camp - but most interesting, they are both endurance athletes. They run marathons, bike rides, and triathlons - in fact, David himself has run 10, which includes a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride, then a marathon - all in succession. All in one day.David noticed that that problem with SaaS today is that it's expensive, and adds up as you compile solutions. Right alongside that, open source software is free - but requires more setup and maintenance to keep it up and running. He decided that there must be a better way to purchase software, while getting the best price on a bundle of solutions. This is the creation story of Federated Computer.SponsorsMailtrapSpeakeasyQA WolfSnapTradeLinkshttps://www.federated.computer/https://www.linkedin.com/in/davidpaulyoung/Our Sponsors:* Check out Kinsta: https://kinsta.com* Check out Vanta: https://vanta.com/CODESTORYSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/code-story/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Now the go-to source for innovation, it plays a crucial role in Dow's data strategy. (28:03)Balancing Competing Demands in Industry: Our knowledgeable leaders in the industry underscore the importance of prioritizing data projects for impact. Decentralization eases bottlenecks, but demand remains high. Dow now requires senior sponsorship to ensure measurable value and optimize resources. (36:06)Key Quotes:"Too often, we wait until the project's done to figure out how to get the value and who's going to sponsor it. We have to flip that around and secure senior sponsorship before we even start." – Chris Bruman"If I talk data mesh to my business clients, there's going to be a blank stare, right? So we use hub and spoke—it's more visual and makes a lot more sense. At the end of the day, it's really about decentralization." – Chris Bruman"Instead of just showing a data sheet or marketing collateral and making the customer hunt for insights, we now surface specific text, data, and even language customization—getting them straight to the front door, not just the right street." – Dan Futter"It's not just about finding data—it's about ensuring its integrity. Where is that data? How does it get created? Which processes generate it? How do we train people so that, from the start, it stays high-integrity?" – Dan FutterMentionsWhat is a data mesh?SpaceXIn Our Time PodcastWalking the Dog PodcastGuest Bios:Chris Bruman Chris Bruman is the Chief Data and Analytics Officer at Dow, a multinational company with operations in 31 countries that serves customers in a wide range of markets.Dan Futter Dan Futter is the Chief Commercial Officer for Dow. Adventures of the Federated Tec, Season 2, Episode 10: Who Killed Bob Teal? In this exciting second-season finale, our hero gets an assignment that hits too close to home: Find the person who murdered another Federated operative, young Bob Teal. The Tec, along with San Francisco Police Detective George Dean, soon starts sniffing out the trail of the most obvious suspect...but our nameless protagonist eventually begins to wonder if maybe they're after the wrong guy. Adapted by Pete Lutz from the story of the same name, originally published in the November, 1924 issue of True Detective magazine. Produced and directed by Pete Lutz. Mixing and mastering by 63audio, Corpus Christi, Texas. Our cast consisted of the following Narada Radio Company players: Darren Rockhold as THE ANNOUNCER Pete Lutz as THE TEC Joe Stofko as THE OLD MAN Frank Guglielmelli as OGBURN Ian Federgreen as BOB TEAL John Bell as DETECTIVE DEAN Rhiannon McAfee as MAE LANDIS Geri Elliff as THE LANDLADY Jeff Moon as WHITACRE The theme, and some incidental music, were composed and performed by Dr. Ross Bernhardt. FEDERATED TEC FANS! We're happy to report that a third season is in the works. Scripts have been written for 11 episodes so far, with a likely four more to go. Each season gets longer than the previous one, because Hammett's stories, for the most part, kept getting longer, better, and more detailed, as his writing skills improved. As a huge fan of Hammett for more than 40 years, I have no desire to condense these longer tales, preferring instead to split them, as you saw in S2, into multi-episode dramas -- S2 alone had three longer stories split into two-parters, for example. Well, S3 will have both two- and three-part story arcs, full of the Hammett hard-boiled style, full of intrigue, and full of the unusual characters he was famous for. You won't wanna miss it! Here's the line-up for Season Three -- and just for simplicity's sake, we'll be shortening our series title to The Federated Tec: 1. Mike, Alec, or Rufus? 2-3. The Whosis Kid 4-5. The Scorched Face 6-8. Corkscrew 9-11. The Daiwan of Chinatown (orig. title Dead Yellow Women) 12-14. The Gutting of Couffignal 15. The Creeping Siamese COMING SOON FROM 63AUDIO!

Bluesky has really taken off since the election, and since the Decoder team took some time off for Thanksgiving break, we felt it was a great time to bring back the interview we did earlier this year with Jay Graber, the CEO of Bluesky, the upstart competitor to Meta's Threads and the platform formerly known as Twitter. At the time, Bluesky was a pretty small platform. It had just reached 5 million users when Jay and I spoke. But since the election, Bluesky's growth has absolutely skyrocketed to more than 20 million users, and it's starting to put real competitive pressure on Threads at the feature level. As Bluesky really ramps up, it seemed like a great time to engage with some of the core questions behind its design and see if Jay and her team can keep it up.
