Lovely to have old happiness vacuum Alun Cochrane back with the show. We discuss the ongoing Reform soap opera and whether Starmer owes Trump a pint for taking the pressure off. Then we look at the 5 year anniversary of the pandemic and ask whether some restrictions might've been a teensy bit mental. CATCH ME ON MY TOUR ‘Basic Bloke 2: There's No Bloke Without Fire'. Was delighted to have the very funny Alun Cochrane back on the show. As well some talk about horror-show Christmas gigs we reflected on the assisted dying debate, the transport secretary getting thrown under a bus and whether being a bit 'Gregg Wallace' is now officially a thing. The Likely Dads are back for a second series to discuss parenting from the paternal perspective. Host Tim Vincent and regular panelists Mick Ferry and Russell Kane return a little older (definitely) and a little wiser (debatable) to talk about their experiences of fatherhood so far.In the first episode of the new series Tim, Mick and Russell discuss how discipline has evolved from a time when being told off by a stranger was socially acceptable and a clip round the ear was a daily occurrence to the concept of parents not saying "no" and that modern-day gem, the naughty step."Mick & Russell's Dad Off" returns, where the regulars are pitted against each other in a series of hypothetical parenting situations, and a new feature sees Tim reveal an anonymous fact about one of our Likely Dads for the panel to guess who it's attributed to. Our guests joining Tim, Mick and Russell this week are comedians Britain's Got Talent finalist Nabil Abdulrashid and award-winning Alun Cochrane. The Producers: Kurt Brookes and Ashley ByrneA Made In Manchester production for BBC Radio 4.

This week we review - Alun Chochrane: Centrist Dad? Despite their bad reputation, Alun Cochrane is fine with being a "Centrist Dad".Join Alun for this recording of his stand-up special for Radio 4 in which he examines the state of political discourse in Britain and tries to find his place on the ever-evolving UK left-right political spectrum.Alun has never considered himself an offensive comedian but now finds himself to be one of the few pro free speech comedians. How come he feels right wing in comedy dressing rooms, left wing in general society and comes out as totally centrist on those online "what are your politics" tests?Alun wants to find out if his politics have changed or if the world has just changed around him and left a reasonable man feeling like an extremist. He is pretty sure he isn't an actual baddie. He spends his days writing jokes in Where's Wally? pyjamas alongside his gluten-free dog. Does that sound like an extremist to you?Written by Alun Cochrane.Produced by Richard Morris.A BBC Studios Production.Centrist Dad? is available here: https://bbc.in/3C7zEU3 The Comedy Slab Podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spreaker, Stitcher, iHeart Radio, Spotify and Youtube. Delighted to have Alun Cochrane on the show this, especially after so many requests from the Patreons. Alun is a seriously smart and funny comic, who's been on a bit of a journey in terms of his relationship with the comedy circuit. It's fair to say he doesn't buy into the comedy groupthink. “A Centrist Dad takes his children to feed the ducks, a Conservative Dad takes his children duck shooting, a Socialist Dad takes his children to a Solidarity With Ducks rally.” Centrist Dads have a bad reputation. They're “entirely responsible for Labour's Election defeat”, “aggressively condescending” and they “like Top Gear too much”. And yet, Alun Cochrane is fine with being one (albeit one who hasn't actually watched Top Gear). Recorded in front of a virtual audience from Salford, this show is Alun's quest for the centre ground, an area bizarrely underpopulated in the comedy world. Comedians should poke fun at all hypocrisy no matter whether it emerges from the right or the left, so why are so few stand-ups apparently adept at sniping from the middle? Alun investigates whether his politics have changed or if it's the world that has changed around him and left a reasonable man feeling like an extremist. He is pretty sure he isn't an actual baddie. He spends his days writing jokes in ‘Where's Wally?' pyjamas alongside his gluten-free dog. Does that sound like an extremist to you?
