Malcolm Tucker. Pet ASBOs. A law requiring everyone in Britain to carry around a plastic bag. It's been twenty years since Armando Iannucci‘s The Thick of It first brought the chaos and drama of the fictitious ‘Department of Social Affairs and Citizenship' into our lives. First aired on the BBC in 2005, the show satirised the Blair government's spin-heavy politics, with Peter Capaldi's foul-mouthed character Malcolm Tucker quickly becoming one of Britain's most unforgettable TV villains. In September 2025 Iannucci came to Alexandra Palace Theatre alongside actors from the show Peter Capaldi, Chris Addison and Rebecca Front to relive some of the funniest moments from the show, reveal behind-the-scenes stories and answer questions on whether a show like The Thick of It could ever work in today's polarised political climate and social media news cycle. --- If you'd like to become a Member and get access to all our full ad free conversations, plus all of our Members-only content, just visit intelligencesquared.com/membership to find out more. This month we're talking to an author and publisher/manager about audiobooks and how they approach to audiobooks. We cover how they chose narrators for their books, and how audiobooks affect the writing and management of their business. We also have the long awaited re-introduction of ‘News From Equity' with Annette Rizzo. C.K. (Caimh) McDonnell is the paranormal pen name of Irish bestselling author Caimh McDonnell. He is a former stand-up comedian and TV writer who now spends all his time writing books as his dogs don't like it when he leaves the house. When not writing about the adventures of the staff at The Stranger Times, he is the author of the increasingly inaccurately titled ‘Dublin Trilogy' series (eight books and counting) and its various spinoffs, all of which have been Amazon bestsellers on both sides of the Atlantic. The Dublin Trilogy has been optioned for TV by Avalon (Breeders, Taskmaster) with Chris Addison at the helm. The Stranger Times has been optioned by Playground (Wolf Hall, The Undeclared War) who are working on the series with Peacock. The Stranger Times won Best Audio at the 2023 British Fantasy Awards, a fact Caimh constantly endeavours to drop into casual conversation. He lives in Manchester, where The Stranger Times series is set. Elaine Ofori After over two decades of collecting seemingly random skills across publishing and marketing/communications, Elaine is finally putting them to good use at her publishing company McFori Ink as Head of Stuff/Chief Wrangler, where she spends her days mulling over words. She's taken this love of words one step further and has turned them into fully constructed sentences that are slightly more creative than the reports and strategies she's spent most of her career writing. Her debut novel, co-written with her husband, author C.K. McDonnell, will be published in Germany in 2025. Away from physics, Brian Cox and Robin Ince learn that one of the major contributors to global warming is the urinal cooling industry, which raises important questions about human stupidity. Armando Iannucci: Westminster Reimagined | a New Statesman podcast
Is Westminster's political power fading? Anoosh and Armando are joined by actor and director Chris Addison and former independent parliamentary candidate Claire Wright to discuss the distribution of political influence in the parliamentary system, whether it's possible to influence politics at a local level without buying in to a central party line, and why so many MPs start out as SpAds.GuestsChris Addison is a comedian, writer, actor and director who, among other notable roles, played the special advisor Ollie Reeder in Armando Iannucci's hit political satire The Thick of It.Claire Wright fought the constituency of East Devon as an independent candidate in three general elections, coming second each time.--This episode was originally published in the New Statesman podcast feed on August 9, 2021. Chris Addison has built his career on laughter, as a stand-up comedian, a panellist on shows such as Mock the Week, and as an actor and director. You perhaps saw him as Ollie, the hapless junior Whitehall adviser in The Thick of It, the political satire created by Armando Iannucci. He's worked as a director on another highly-acclaimed comedy in the corridors of power: the Emmy Award-winning Veep, set in and around the White House. He has also co-created and directed Breeders, a brutally honest sitcom about parenthood, starring Martin Freeman. Chris has also performed in opera on the stage at Covent Garden – though in a speaking role. He is an opera fan, so his musical choices include Mozart and Rossini but also folk music by Eliza Carthy and a Swedish Christmas song.

It's happened again: it's the end of the season, and all our long-dead relatives have come back as Cybermen. Only this time, instead of hanging around the kitchen reeking of tobacco, they're wandering through graveyards and — well, that's it really, wandering through graveyards. Fortunately, Missy is here to liven things up a bit. It's Death in Heaven. Notes and links Nathan alludes to discovering during the week of recording some of the terrible consequences of Australia's presence in Afghanistan. This is upsetting reading, so content warnings apply. We mention Doctor Who and the Silurians as a previous story where the Doctor comes into conflict with soldiers, and we refer to El Sandifer's take on the end of that story, a scene which presents this conflict explicitly but which is never followed up in any satisfactory way. Richard brings up Chris Addison's Radio 4 comedy series Civilisation, which co-stars the original Ford Prefect, Geoffrey McGivern. And, finally, the Doctor plummeting to his death from a plane inevitably reminds us of Roger Moore in a similar situation as James Bond in Moonraker (1979). Follow us Nathan is on Twitter as @nathanbottomley, Brendan is @brandybongos, Richard is @RichardLStone, and Todd is @ToddBeilby. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam. We'll be back with a new flashcast on the second Russell T Davies era in November. Our James Bond commentary podcast is called Bondfinger, and you can find that at bondfinger.com, at @bondfingercast on Twitter, on Apple Podcasts, and everywhere else as well. We can also be heard on the Blakes 7 podcast Maximum Power, which has completed its coverage of the first half of the show's entire run. Recording of our coverage of Series C is nearing its conclusion: it will be ready for you later in the year. There's also our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. In our most recent episode, we watch an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation called Genesis, in which the crew devolve into various types of monsters and animals, upsetting fans who have the (baffling) expectation that their franchise will take itself more seriously.
This week, Danny's death is somehow made up for by the culmination of a season-long arc which finally brings Michelle Gomez properly into the limelight. It's Dark Water. Notes and links This week's evil corporation is 3W, which gets it's name from the three words Don't cremate me. But, as Brendan points out, it's also the production code for Invasion of the Dinosaurs. We explain about production codes in unnecessary detail in the shownotes for Episode 237. The Black Orchid problem is that a two-part story has its climax at the halfway point instead of somewhere more appropriate. It's identified by El Sandifer in her essay on that story. Well, we found the clip for the shownotes: Brendan mentions Chris Addison's appearance on an episode of Have I Got News for You? hosted by Tom Baker. The whole episode is worth a watch, but the incident that Brendan refers to starts here. Once again, we allude to the Troops to Teachers programme, which gave veterans the chance to fast-track their teacher training so that they could work in schools. The Guardian reports on the scheme here. Fans of Missy's (other) gay sidekick Dr Chang can see much more of Andrew Leung in Lilting (2014), where his lover is played by Ben Whishaw. They talk about the launch of the "Shed by Shed: Rebuilding the Fight Against Prostate Cancer" campaign, and the pair explain why talking about men's health is so important. www.bayer.com www.menssheds.org.uk
Our first regeneration story! In this episode, we discuss the classic final episode of the Peter Capaldi era from 25 December 2017: 'The Caves of Androzani'. Which just leaves us one dilemma - which companion is in this anyway? All we can agree on is Don't Kill Bill. After that, it's the Cheeky Girls, evil Christmas trees and gags about blowholes all the way. Well that's Time Ram for you, innit. Also starring: Derek Jacobi, Chris Addison and Helen Mirren. Always Helen Mirren.
Not one, but two brilliant guests this week. Cricket superfan and star of 'The Thick of It' Chris Addison reacts to a brilliant Women's World Cup, whilst self-professed cricket geek Erika Morris gives us a statistical preview of the upcoming season. Elsewhere the Hundred squads have been announced and Finny is getting ready for a (freezing) first game of the season.

We promised that our epic dive into Ruth and Martin's Album Club - episode 217: the RP RAM Album Club Club - was only a taste of what we'd recorded with tom disso on the subject. True to our word, here's another full episode (not some skimpy 20 min "Bonus RP" type shit) in which we address two of the worst RAM Album Club reviews of all: Chris Addison's spectacularly ignorant lukewarm 6/10 review of Marvin Gaye's seminal What's Going On, and Euan McColm (guitarist for the band Fat Cops, alongside bandmates Al Murray the Pub Landlord, JK Rowling's husband and a guy who calls himself "Bobby Bluebell") completely failing to appreciate Joni Mitchell's masterful Blue album. They discuss the conveyor belt from special advisor to politician and what you need to be a good MP. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In the mid 2010s, there existed an uneasy peace between Britain's Twitter-using centre-left and elements of the hard left and centre right. One of the era's quintessential venues for comrades of different political affiliations, but perhaps similar social and professional milieus, to find common ground was RUTH AND MARTIN'S (RAM) ALBUM CLUB, a tumblr blog in which a hand-picked selection of individuals drawn primarily from the worlds of light entertainment and political journalism would take it in turns to review an album they'd never heard before. In this exclusive RP investigation, RP crew affiliate and producer of smoking beats tom disso (@nailheadparty) joins Jack and Geraint to peek inside this capsule of a whole other time. We choose to focus on four reviews in particular, each of which are in their own way quintessentially RAM: Tim Farron on NWA's STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON, Matt Forde on David Bowie's HUNKY DORY, David Aaronovitch on the Wu-Tang Clan's ENTER THE WU-TANG: 36 CHAMBERS and, finally, Tom Watson on Bob Dylan's SLOW TRAIN COMING. To hear the next instalment of the RP RAM Album Club Club, in which we focus on Chris Addison's truly shocking review of Marvin Gaye's WHAT'S GOING ON, and Euan McColm's equally repellent take on Joni Mitchell's BLUE, subscribe over at patreon.com/reelpolitik

Steve Stebbing is here to guide us through all things Hollywood. THE CONVO: Cancel culture taking on a new meaning with COVID-19. Movies and conferences are being cancelled left and right, including the new bond. Also, Katy Perry announces her pregnancy via.. a music video?! THE FLICK: Onward - Disney and Pixar are back with their next most likely award-nominated feature, pairing the very likeable duo of Tom Holland and Chris Pratt in the lead roles. Set in a world where fantasy elements like orcs, gnomes, unicorns and other mythical creatures exist in a modern world, this story follows two brothers who find a mysterious magical staff that belonged to their late father. After a spell cast through the staff resurrects the bottom half of Dad, they must embark on an adventure to find the real magic still remaining on the world to bring their family back together. The trailer is really funny for this and I'm really hoping for some great world-building as Pixar needs a new franchise to put t's hat on. I have good feelings about this movie. THE BINGE:Breeders: Season 1 (FX) - One of my favorite British comedic actors, Martin Freeman, once known as the original "Jim from The Office" Tim, gets his own American network show to hopefully raise his awareness internationally better than the unmediated on Hobbit trilogy. Freeman pairs with actress Daisy Haggard as the parents of two kids who try to keep their sanity ad love life intact against the constant barrage of their children. This darkly comedic series is almost like holding a mirror up to any parent's plight and is infinitely relatable immediately. Created by Freeman, Veep's Simon Blackwell and The Lab Rats' Chris Addison, I really hope this show connects with the audience as I'm really liking it so far and want additional seasons. Steve Stebbing is a movie connoisseur and critic on Twitter @TheStevilDead, or at SteveStebbing.ca
