Lliana Bird is a writer, broadcaster and co-founder of the charity Choose Love. She describes herself as a butterfly flitting from flower to flower. She was also the longest employed female DJ - for 16 years - at Xfm and then Radio X as it is now called.Lliana and her partner Noel Fielding have two girls, Dali and Iggy, aged 2 and 4, and Lliana told me how their house might be described as over-stimulating by some, with constant music, curated mostly by Noel but increasingly by the children, and with art being created on giant canvases in the kitchen, with paint splats everywhere.Lliana's first children's book ‘Baboo the unusual Bee' has just come out in paperback. She revealed that she actually wrote it while breastfeeding and she's now working on the stage show version of it.As my mum would say: "She's no slouch"!Spinning Plates is presented by Sophie Ellis-Bextor, produced by Claire Jones and post-production by Richard Jones. Sandi Toksvig OBE is a Danish-born comedian, broadcaster and writer. She spent her formative years travelling the world with her family, thanks to her father's job as a foreign correspondent. Sandi has had a long and successful career in UK radio and television, which began in the eighties on kids TV. She is best known for presenting QI, taking over from Stephen Fry in 2016. She subsequently spent three years co-presenting The Great British Bake Off with Noel Fielding and Prue Leith. Sandi is a political activist and is one of the co-founders of the Women's Equality Party. She has written more than 20 books and is here to talk about her latest novel, Friends of Dorothy. Sandi occasionally enjoys a drink, but today Nick pours a Days 0.0% alcohol free lager, while Angela prepares her favourite, roast duck legs with grapes. The experts at Waitrose suggest a Sorcova pinot noir, our first Romanian wine-pairing. This episode of Dish is as charming, witty and warm as Sandi Toksvig herself. She tells Nick and Angela about Danish culinary traditions, shares her (controversial) thoughts on cake and explains why she can often be found in a forest with a chainsaw. This week, we welcome on themjeans aka Jason Stewart, co-host and producer of one of our favorite podcasts, How Long Gone, for a conversation on topics including but not limited to what it means to be a "wife guy", doing ketamine while housecleaning, replacing Noel Fielding on the Great British Baking Show, finding confidence through alcohol and age, not compromising your values, and the magic behind his podcast.
Welcome to the Women's Running podcast: a very special Bake Off edition. We're your hosts, Esther Newman and Holly Taylor, and usually you can find us chatting about life and running – though, let's be honest, it's mostly the life bit. Every year we get terribly overexcited for the Great British Bake Off and discuss it at length on the pod. Despite being total failures at baking ourselves, we've decided that we simply have far too much to say about the show – so here we are, turning it into its own spin off so we can dissect each episode properly. We'll be chatting about all the highs and lows from the Bake Off tent, playing total favourites and slagging off bakes we could never dream of producing ourselves. Whether you run while you listen, bake while you listen, or neither – enjoy this extra little morsel!SPOILER ALERT: Of course, this episode is chock full of spoilers. What did you expect? Go and watch the opening episode before listening!Bake Off series 14 episode 1: Cake WeekWe start this week by discussing the merits of the now traditional Great British Bit that seems to start each new series. Do we really need to see Noel Fielding in a fedora? Discuss. We also share our thoughts on new host Alison Hammond and pick our early frontrunners. Signature: Vertical cakes…And they're off! The first task of the series is underway. We chat about which baker's offering we'd scoff and get to know this year's cohort. Technical: Bake Off cake Well, wasn't this a joy? We debate the first controversy of the season: what to do about the missing raspberry. Showstopper: Animal cakesThere's plenty of beaver chat here, as we say goodbye to our first baker – who we were already a bit obsessed with. We are back with a new episode of the Geektown Radio podcast. This week I'm joined by our Film Reviewer Gray to discuss all the latest UK TV news, films, and UK TV air dates, along with updates about the ongoing Hollywood Strike action.Astonishingly, Gray is not only back on the show after digging himself out from under piles of exam papers but also actually reviews multiple films this week! We begin with 'The Flash', followed by 'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse', and also 'Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One', and lastly, 'Barbie'! He also discusses the TV he's been watching including 'Heartstopper' Season 2, 'Traitors: Australia', the brilliant 'Silo', and 'Poker Face'. Meanwhile, I also have film reviews, including 'The Flash' and 'Guardians Of The Galaxy: Vol. 3', along with the TV shows, 'The Lincoln Lawyer', 'Good Omens' Season 2, and that musical episode of 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds'. In the news section, we run through all the renewals, cancellations and pick-ups, and also catch up on the ongoing troubles in Hollywood, with the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strike. We then discuss Prime Video picking up a new Rome-based series from Roland Emmerich, and ‘The Completely Made-Up Adventures Of Dick Turpin' starring Noel Fielding and a host of British cast, which is coming to Apple TV+!Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. Dave Brown has been part of The Mighty Boosh since its conception in the late 90s. You may know him as Bollo and many of the other beloved characters in the Boosh universe, but he's also managed to document the entire series through his love of photography. On this episode of the pod, we have a long and entertaining chat about all things Boosh. Covering the upcoming photography exhibition in Sydney and Melbourne, some inside stories from early days including what it was like living with Noel at uni, blowing up in the US and having celebrity fans such as Robyn Williams and the Beastie Boys, recording the unreleased Mighty Boosh album, and we're also lucky enough to get a tour of the Bollo costume.Make sure you check out the "Behind the Boosh" exhibition in Sydney and Melbourne. Hey folks, the episode contains references to drug use so please be mindful of where you are listening in.In this episode, I am sharing a very personal experience. Just before the new year, I went on a solo retreat and with the support of a guide, I took psychedelic mushrooms for the first time. Psilocybin is the psychoactive ingredient in mushrooms and this is still considered a Class A drug in the UK. But in other countries and in many indigenous and ceremonial cultures, it is used as medicine. My beloved friend Karen King joins me for this episode. Karen is a Psychedelic-assisted psychotherapist who runs a clinic in Washington State in the US where she uses plant medicines as part of therapy treatments. I thought she would be the ideal person to share my experience with you. In the episode we talk about:How we all access states of ‘non-ordinary reality' throughout the day (driving home and not remembering how you got there, lucid dreams and inspiration in the shower are common examples).I share my experience – what it was like to take a psychedelic trip, physically, psychologically, emotionally, and spiritually. There is a guest appearance by Noel Fielding. We also talk about what happened afterwards – the reality of returning to life in human density after such a profound experience.Links:Karen's detailsFollow Karen on InstagramFind Karen on FacebookKing Health Associates ResearchImperial Centre for Psychedelic ResearchWhat does the UK think about psilocybin research?
