A new exhibition at London's National Gallery hopes to shed light on artists in 14th Century Siena, who have often been overshadowed by their Tuscan neighbours in Florence. Samira is joined in the studio by one of the curators, Imogen Tedbury, and by Maya Corry, a Renaissance expert from Oxford Brookes University to discuss the astonishing colours and use of gold by artists like Duccio, the Lorenzetti brothers and Simone Martini. The death has been announced of Bill Dare, the creator of Radio 4's The Now Show and Dead Ringers. He nurtured new writers and performers including David Baddiel, Rob Newman, Hugh Dennis and Steve Punt, of The Mary Whitehouse Experience as well as the comedian Jon Holmes, who explains how they first met. Haitian filmmaker Raoul Peck, best-known for his Oscar and BAFTA nominated documentary about James Baldwin 'I Am Not Your Negro', discusses his latest film 'Ernest Cole: Lost and Found', about the brief life of a young South African photographer who had to flee his homeland in 1968 to publish his book of photos which exposed the horrors of apartheid to the world. The Booker and Oscar-nominated writer Colum McCann discusses his thrilling new novel Twist, a dive in to the dark depths of the modern human condition set on board a ship repairing the fragile cables which connect us on the ocean floor. In this episode we spend time with David Baddiel and Simon Sebag Montefiore and ask - Where do Jews really come from? Are they white or people of colour? And how should we deal with the ethnic diversity within Jewish populations, with differences between Ashkenazi, Sephardi and Mizrachi Jews? Questions around whether Jews are white or people of colour has become a fraught issue. In an ideal world (or the ideal for at least most of us in the multicultural liberal west,) it shouldn't matter. However, race, ethnicity and politics have always been intertwined, and this question takes us to some surprising places in the battle of racial politics. In particular, both the far right and now the progressive left are drawing a lot of meaning from the question ‘are Jews white or people of colour?', with Jews seemingly on the wrong side of each of their equations. They are non-white for the far right, and quintessentially white for the progressive left. To help answer this question and more, we have two guests with very different lenses. Our first, Simon Sebag Montefiore, is one of the world's leading historians. He outlines the historical, archaeological and genetic consensus, and any counterviews, on where Jews come from and how Jewish populations have moved through the ages. We also have author, comedian and documentarian David Baddiel to help with the cultural and political significance of this question, and to explore whether Jews are privileged enough to be ‘deemed' white, regardless of their Middle Eastern heritage. Authentic cowboys, well sort of, start us off. Mac McClintock left home to join the circus. Between that, and becoming a singer, actor, composer and poet, he did a whole stream of incredible jobs. Railroading in Africa, Mule train in Philipines and news gatherer in China. He was a devoted union man and wrote Hallelujah I'm a bum and Big rock candy mountain. Here he gives us The old Chisholm trail. Jules Allen sings Zebra dun. He probably was a real life cowboy at one time, driving cattle from the Mexican border to Montana. The Cartwright Brothers sing Texas Ranger. The tune and sentiment are familar. It's yet another version of The unfortunate Rake. Into Western Swing. The right key but the wrong keyhole- Cliff Bruner Texas Wanderers, I can't dance(I've got ants in my pants)- Rob Newman and his boys, Wonder Stomp- Texas Wanderers and Devil with the devil- Rob Newman and his boys. Bob Wills with Bob Wills boogie from 1946. Very rock and roll in my opinion. Jazz on 78rpm break with Teddy Wilson and his Orchestra. I cried for you- vocals by Billie Holiday and, a new favourite of mine, Blues in G sharp minor. Composed by Wilson. He was rated as the best swing pianist of his time. Back to Western Swing and Milton Brown and his Brownies. St Louis Blues. Great, trippy version, with a real tempo shift toward the end. In El Rancho Grande- Milton and Durwood singing in Spanish. From 1937, a year after Milton's death, Durwood sings If you can't get five get two. We finish with the wonderfully upbeat  tune from Virginian fiddler John Ashby- The 8th of January.

Comedian and writer Rob Newman is a long-time fan of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who "saved the United States, just in time for the United States to save the world". When FDR came into office in 1933, at the height of the Great Depression, unemployment stood at more than 25% and drought in the Dust Bowl had decimated American agriculture across the Great Plains. While known for his folksy charm, Roosevelt was a shrewd and determined politician, who transformed federal government, the US financial system and the relationship between the American people and their president forever. His raft of early interventions, known as the New Deal, have become the benchmark for US presidents' first 100 days in office ever since. As 'Forester in Chief', FDR's administration initiated mass tree planting and soil conservation - all while providing employment for 3 million young men. Rob talks to Matthew Parris about how FDR's radical and ambitious environmentalism continues to inspire him, and how this man defied his sheltered upper class upbringing to reach out to working Americans and address their struggles directly. They are joined by Professor David B. Woolner, Senior Fellow and Resident Historian of the Roosevelt Institute and author of The Last 100 Days: FDR at War and at Peace, to discuss FDR's personal triumphs, his hidden struggles and his international legacy. Could or should he have predicted the divided Europe that followed hot on the heels of a hard-fought peace? With thanks to the archivists at the Franklin D Roosevelt Presidential Library. Presented by Matthew Parris. Produced by Sarah Goodman for BBC Audio Bristol.

With almost 500 appearances over the period 1982-1991 Rob is entitled to be regarded as a Bristol City legend. 40 years ago this week as an 18 year old the departure of the Ashton Gate 8 meant he was handed his league debut against Fulham as the dawning of a new era began for the club. This chat with Rob was interesting and informative beginning with talk of how John Atyeo influenced the schoolboy Rob and through the 80s as he achieved two promotions [84 & 90] alongside many other highs during that period. Rob talks about how he never really wanted to leave City in summer 91 but in the years that followed at Norwich he was an integral part of a side that finished 3rd in the inaugural 92/93 Premier League season and a famous victory for the Canaries against Bayern Munich the following year. Rob talks about his move into player recruitment with Man City in 2008, naming his best find as David Silva and how in October last year he reunited with former City team-mate David Moyes at West Ham to lead player recruitment there. This is a truly fascinating listen for any City fan over the age of 45 who'll remember much of what Rob says and if you are younger it is good to understand how City came back from the basement of football in troubled yet often fun times such was the team spirit back then

Once again, West Ham did a West Ham by losing a game that had 0-0 written all over it.  Except, against Man Utd, it was because of a controversial VAR call in the 93rd minute and a severe lapse in concentration.  The 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford hurt more than it has done in the past.  The Hammers are no strangers to losing there, but to do so in such fashion and at the expense of our position in the Premier League's top four was a tough one to take.  But despite that, David Moyes' men look forward to a potentially fruitful FA Cup run, the latter stages of the Europa League and another potential top-six finish. So it's not all bad. Yet. As we enter the final week of the January transfer window, David Moyes, Rob Newman and the club are yet to add to West Ham's unacceptably thin squad. And if they don't then all of the above might be a stretch too far for what is fast becoming a very tired group of players. This time next week fans will know more about what we should expect.  On this week's show, James Jones and Will Pugh give their thoughts on the controversy at Old Trafford, the performance and what they hope for after the international break.  Football.London's West Ham Correspondent Tom Clark dials in to chat about the defeat last weekend, West Ham's thriving bunch of academy prospects, Moyes' January transfer intentions and much more. The lads also talk through their Betway Charity Bets, which were all way off the mark this time around. And finally, we discuss West Ham Women's 4-2 Conti Cup defeat to Chelsea and the superb 3-0 win over Everton in the WSL as Oli Harder continues to turn the team's fortunes around after last season's battle to survive relegation.  There's then time for some final thoughts before the boys say goodbye for another week. Bushy is from Know How Property Finance and the host of his very popular podcast “Get Invested'.  His guest this week are Bryce Holdaway, Rob Newman and Jason Back.  First up Bushy talks to TV Property Show host and property buyers advocate Bryce Holdaway about a popular money myth about paying rent.  Given the massive stimulus incentives being offered by Federal and State governments to build new homes, there has been a big increase in the number of first home buyers looking to go down this road.  It is best to know the risks before making that decision ad you will hear them today from Rob Newman, a Buyers Agent, and Builder Broker.  Delays in arranging approved finance for the purchase of a property can now run out to 8 to 12 weeks resulting in many property sales falling over with everyone involved suffering high anxiety, stress, and frustration.   It does not have to be that way according to mortgage broking industry veteran Jason Back.  He talks to us about that.  Finally to wrap up this week's show Bushy's Last Word is about how so many borrowers focus on rate when borrowing.  He says there are more important aspects of the loan you should be considering. When auction clearance rates consistently remain near 80% it means there are more buyers than sellers in the market and this eventually leads to higher property prices, and that's clearly what's happening.  With in excess of 2,000 properties being auctioned every week and given the strong ongoing interest in auctions, it's worth revisiting key aspects of auctions for buyers. Bushy Martin does that today with buyer's agent and builder broker, Rob Newman of Blackfords Urban Habitats.  Did you know that over 60% of all new home loans in Australia are now facilitated by mortgage brokers?  The growth is so strong that ASIC has moved to put in place a process called Best Interests Duty as a guide for brokers and protection for consumers.  So, what if anything has changed since it came into force on January 1 this year?  You will find out today.  And on that subject – financing, brokers, and banks – in Bushy's last word he talks about a worrying trend that has emerged where the banks are contacting borrowers introduced by a broker and offering enticing locked-in 4-to-5-year fixed-rate loans.  Bushy calls them golden handcuffs and for good reason.  He will explain.  But first up today, we are delighted to welcome back to the show Bryce Holdaway.  Bryce is well known for his TV appearances in Location, Location, Location Australia, Escape to the Country and Relocation, Relocation Australia as well as co-host of The Property Couch with Ben Kingsley.  Bryce has some thoughts about who on your panel of property experts you should be most concerned about impressing. In uncertain times it is important to remain calm, separate facts from fear and fiction, make clear committed choices and take action – not wait for something to happen. And today’s guest is a great example of exactly this thinking and approach during times of threat. Rob Newman has stared death squarely in the eye in life threatening situations and near death experiences on a number of occasions and lived to tell the tale and go on to survive and thrive.  Today you will find out exactly what happened, how he did it and the lessons he learned that you can apply to help you tackle challenging times and make good committed choices - not knee jerk decisions.  Like me, Rob is a boy from the bush who has made it in the big smoke. His early passions took him around the world in motorsport including being part of the Australian Formula 1 team, competing at Bathurst and being part of a winning team that took out the Australian Grand Prix. After hanging up his race helmet, Rob has turned his passion to property and for the last 30 years - his company Blackford’s Property has specialised in helping investors. In recent times his unique buyers agency approach now also assists first home buyers and their parents as well as up and downsizers and custom builds. After recovering from his last sudden unexpected life threatening incident, Rob’s road to recovery has developed into a passion for overall fitness, mind and body.  On the physical side yoga, walking, pilates, cycling and swimming are all regular activities and on the mental front a never-ending diet of self-development including meditation and working with mentors who continue to bring out the best in him. Never resting on his laurels and always challenging himself, he has taken his long term interest in comedy and public speaking to the next level and  performed at the recent Adelaide Fringe, and he’s been selected to perform at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. His passion for life is infectious and you’re really going to learn some great lessons and enjoy this great conversation with Rob Newman. In Episode 21, “Failure Isn’t Fatal”, Blenheim Partners‘ Gregory Robinson is delighted to speak to Rob Newman, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Nearmap Ltd, a next generation digital content provider offering access to high resolution aerial imagery, city-scale 3D data sets and integrated geospatial tools.Starting his first business whilst still at University, Rob had his entrepreneurial spirit implanted in him at a young age. Being fascinated by technology in his youth, he was encouraged by his father to use that fascination and mix it with business, laying the foundations for his future endeavours.Rob highlights the fact that Australia “hasn't created a culture and a belief that we can be commercially successful with technology”. He believes that Australians have the capacity to excel in creating technology, but falter in our knowledge of how to market and sell technology. Instead, Australian’s either license, sell-out and go offshore too early. This leaves most of the value and experience offshore, robbing Australia of the opportunity to build a sustainable technology industry. In this very upbeat and passionate discussion, Rob offers a piece of advice for the Government regarding technology, “get out of the way”. He believes the continual shift in policy regarding innovation by the Australian Government is a huge detriment to the survival and growth of the industry. He states what is needed is for the Government to disassociate itself from start-ups and allow for free-enterprise to take hold.Lastly, Rob comments on understanding the importance of failure in future success. The numerous trials and tribulations he has gone through his career have left a distinct impression on him in which he understands without risk there can be no reward.

His career started in the mid 80's and followed on from a well-trodden path of Cambridge footlights to professional performer. This route wasn't quite as easy by the time of the alternative comedy circuit though, and when he called the comedy store and announced himself as vice president of footlights, they put the phone down on him. He still managed to become the first 'rock star comedian' with Rob Newman selling out Wembley Arena. His second comedy partner was Frank Skinner, and together they wrote the most successful English football song 'Three Lions' along with the Lightning seeds. Hear why David ended up renting a room to Frank Skinner for 6 years for £40 a week despite Frank becoming 'super famous'.
