No one sheds a tear for the British Loyalists of Long Island, those inhabitants who remained loyal to the crown during the American Revolution. But genealogist Brendon Burns has spent a tremendous amount of effort tracking them down through libraries and archives across the world. The result is his 5-volume series The Loyal and Doubtful: Index to the Acts of British Loyalism in the Greater New York and Long Island Area 1775-1783. It's a meticulous record of people in New York, Staten Island, and on Long Island, acting in support of King George and the efforts to subdue the patriots. The Loyal and Doubtful is of a piece with Brendon's work as a genealogist at the Daughters of the American Revolution. He helps vet applications for membership, which includes proving that an ancestor demonstrated "unfailing" service to the revolution. This criteria poses a problem on Long Island where swearing an oath of loyalty or other public acts of support could hardly have been avoided. On this episode, Brendon walks us through the DAR process, the challenges of disproving loyal acts, and what the surviving records can tell us about life on Long Island during the war. As promised when Brendon last appeared, here's the full conversation in which he really opens up about an abusive relationship that had a major impact on his life and career.
The Edinburgh Comedy Award winner of 2007 has many stories to tell from the last 13 years ending with him taking a break from stand up last year. But maybe it's better to keep some stories to yourself and talk about wrestling, seagulls and who's a better actor than Daniel Day Lewis instead.
My guest today is Steve McNeil, one of the creators and team captains of Go 8 Bit, a videogame comedy show that started life as a fringe experiment and has now been turned into a real life TV show! It starts tonight in the UK at 10pm on Dave. We talk through Steve's life in games, from Pong on the Adnan Grandstand through to the very latest in virtual reality. We touch on his love for the early British videogame pioneers like Jeff Minter and the Oliver Twins, university sessions of Brian Lara Cricket, his deep love of Split/Second Velocity and the potentially friend-ending joy of Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes. We also touch on Steve's comedy career, how he got his start as a plant in a Brendon Burns fringe show, the origins of Go 8 Bit and the challenge of adapting it for TV, the crazy tech of Wifi Wars and how much Bob Mortimer loves first person shooters. RHLSTP #142: Brendon Burns and Craig Quartermaine - Race Off. Richard contemplates the now trickier commute to work that he has thanks to being forced to move to the country because he is 50, before introducing veteran comedian Brendon Burns and a man with only one credit, Craig Quartermaine. It's a more contemplative RHLSTP than usual, as the two Australians discuss the racial issues that many of their countrymen refuse to confront and how comedy can deal with questions of race (especially if a loud and mouthy bloke is teamed up with a quieter and indigenous one). Find out how this unlikely pair got together, how they reluctantly formed a double act, what makes a double act work and the awkwardness that both comedians revel in and have to cope with in their daily life and from people who have seen their show. It's a fascinating insight into guilt, embarrassment and the horrors of imperialism and how difficult it is to confront these harsh truths. Luckily it's funny too. Though sometimes uncomfortably so. A conversation about the state of UK comedy. Brendon has witnessed over the years audiences getting whiter and whiter. He thinks reality TV has a lot to answer for. Welcome welcome welcome (no John Oliver) to your weekly Distraction Pieces podcast with Scroobius Pip! It's been an all the way live run of DPP goodness of late with Pip's UK book tour (hopefully you made it to a show or caught the book), but here he nails down an in-person in-studio guest - Perth's very own comic genius Brendon Burns! Wonderful stuff from start to end, with a lively tale of Brendon's upbringing and comic roots - which includes one of the simultaneously greatest and most horrible first show stories which is perfectly painful - and his influences stemming from black comics back in the 70s, politics and the hard left, how to work a crowd and the science of doing so, spoken word and poetry and what they are, Australia, wrestling talk (pertinent to his show with Colt Cabana) and good old fashioned podcast chat! Freeflowing and satisfying, get in and enjoy... ...And for sure you'll want to peep his own podcast too - 'Dumb White Guy', which is available here: https://soundcloud.com/brendonburns See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Before UK comedian Alexis Dubus caused an international stir with a measured, and initially private, Facebook post about the Adelaide Fringe glut, I was chasing the sparkly-eyed UK dynamo for a podcast chat. How fortunate, for it makes me look incredibly relevant. This cabaret podcast, we chat about the fall-out from his post, the perils of independent arts, strange encounters in Perth, passionate people with odd but grand ideas, and how to argue with a guy who has a rabbit on his knob. Alexis Dubus (aka Marcel Lucont) is an award-winning UK performer who has been traipsing the Australian and UK Fringe circuits for almost a decade, which means we would run into each other maybe twice a year (back when I did Edinburgh Fringe more often...I know, I'm sorry guys, I've not been over for way too long...). He's a very fine wordsmith, a very funny performer, a resourceful artist, a great photographer, and a mischievous imp, as you will hear. If you, like us, love odd corners of the world and people who have a dream, visit the Bang On The Strillers website for links to the National Pioneer Women Hall of Fame and Atelier Sul Mare in Sicily, and the KGB Museum in Prague. Lots of loving name-checks this episode because we are frayed long-term Fringe-performers who know everyone, including Nicko Vaughan, Briefs, Harley Breen, Sam Simmons, Tommy Bradson (and how much we love him), David Quirk (and how much we love HIM), Lori Bell, Brendon Burns, Jon Bennett, Mitch Benn and my Episode #2 guest Becky Lou. We love all these guys, incidentally, we just carried on a bit more about Dave and Tommy. Do listen. AT ONCE.

This week on the ACP Greg and Jonathan try to maintain control of their interview with Brendon Burns, the Australian funnyman who says a standup comic is “Some dude with a social disorder professing to be the world’s only sane man.” Our Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/amsterdamcomedypodcast?ref=bookmarks Brendon’s website: https://brendon-burns.squarespace.com/ Brendon’s Podcast: https://brendon-burns.squarespace.com/subscribe-to-the-podcast/ The Heckler: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aN3W9PE55dw
This podcast features Scott Wise, Roei Dans and their guest Brendon Burns, filmed on 9th July 2015. Brendon Burns is an Australian born comedian who lives in the UK – known for his controversial style of no-limits comedy, he has won several awards including at the Montreal Comedy Festival, and constantly tours worldwide, as well as hosting his own podcast, which you can find at: (www.thebrendonburnsshow.com) & on Twitter @BrendonBurns. The guys discussed a wide range of topics, with them starting off trading stories about school, being the class clown and getting expelled. The conversation moves on to drugs where the guys discuss legalisation of marijuana, getting sober, crystal meth, heroin, weed & cocaine. The guys then go on to discussing racism and being offensive in comedy - and talk about where lines should be drawn when it comes to race, gender, culture, religion and rape – with a discussion about Bill Cosby to boot. Wise, Dans & Burns move on to white privilege, climate change, and Gengis Khan – before the age old question ‘Can You Punch A Sheep’ is asked. Burns talks about racism in Australia and the guys tell their respective stories about travelling in Asia – specifically Shanghai, Singapore & India. The conversation ends on a brief discussion about rough sex and rape in marriage. 00:00-02:04: Introducing Brendon Burns 02:05-10:00: Getting Expelled From School 10:01-12:23: Writing Comedy 12:24-13:00: Predicting The Future & Caitlyn Jenner 13:01-13:59: Enough Monkeys With Enough Typewriters 14:00-15:50: Podcasting High 15:51-17:25: Don’t F*ck up Legalisation For The Rest Of Us 17:26-20:19: Getting Sober 20:20-22:40: Crystal Meth 22:41-23:10: Heroin 23:11-23:46: Weed 23:47-26:09: Cocaine 26:10-29:09: Drake, Neil Diamond & The Ting Tings 29:10-31:08: The Most Exclusive Party In The World 31:09-33:49: Jews 33:50-34:30: Being Offensive In Comedy 34:31-35:59: Dapper Laughs 36:00-37:55: Cultures & Comedy 37:56-41:00: Comedy & Racism 41:00-43:00: Cultural Differences 43:01-44:23: Religious Extremism 44:24-46:07: Over-Compensating 46:08-47:37: Bill Cosby 47:38-49:50: “What About Them Kids You F*cked?” 49:51-51:01: Stereotypes 51:02-53:09: “The Latvians Can Go Fuck Themselves” 53:10-54:20: White Privilege 54:21-56:07: Climate Change 56:08-57:35: Genghis Khan 57:36-59:12: “Can You Punch A Sheep?” 59:13-1:07:00: Racism In Australia 1:07:01-1:08:50: Is Sydney Tiny? 1:08:51-1:11:40: Shanghai 1:11:41-1:13:50: Eating in South East Asia 1:13:51-1:15:40: Comedy in Singapore 1:15:41-1:18:19: India 1:18:20 – 1:21:04: What The F*ck Did You Do You Dirty C*nt 1:21:05-1:24:56: Rough Sex

RHLSTP #48: Brendon Burns - Not Even The Go To Guy With This Face. Richard forgot to lube his nipples and now he's in all kinds of pain, but he's mainly glad that his nipples get to experience any sensation at all. And hopefully his guest this week will steer clear of his breast area and who - to make up for his Edinburgh Fringe Podcast no-show - turned up two hours early, Brendon Burns. They chat about why Stewart Lee fans are 'the worst', whether certain words are unsayable, how splitting yourself into two different comedic personalities can only lead to mental breakdown, if the loss of libido is a blessed release, and what it's like to be mistaken for Ferris Bueller. Although he's frequently referred to as a "philosophical" or "stoner" comic, Tom Stade is actually a Level Twenty Comedian. He waxes lyrical about striving for wisdom in his writing, rather than cleverness, and why he focuses on the internal not the external. We also talk about videotaping yourself to dissolve the delusion that an audio-recording of your act affords, acting like a star, and why Tom's a dangerous person to have on TV... Orange people in the Australian outback! Making "Be a Lady" T-shirts! Naked children on giant slip-n-slides! Underwear that filters your flatulence! Learning how to pronounce "awry"! Finding bombs with dolphin-inspired radar! The four-disc Flaming Lips experimental album! Whatever killed the dinosaurs wiped out a load of bees, too! Personality trends across the US! Junk DNA that shapes your face! Perthans!

We also delve into the dynamic between the passionate truth-teller and the self-involved teenager that comprise his persona, and discuss whether you can find solutions to your problems by making shows... RHEFP 2013 #4: Brendon Burns, John Lloyd and Keith Farnan - Thistles Up Your Anus. Richard is bamboozled after receiving flowers from a man and the unexpected feelings that has awakened, and on top of that an unexpected double booking has occurred. So two guests for the price of one with Wrestling fan and victim of marsupial abuse, Brendon Burns and carrot-chemical obsessive, furniture snob John Lloyd. And the double-header works so well that we might do it more. If you've ever thought about your dog's vagina whilst masturbating, know all the words to the Not The Nine O'Clock News or don't know what 'cunnilingus' means, then this is the show for you. With a fantastic set from Keith Farnan.
Amongst other things covered in this month's show, host James O'Brien tries to defend pay-rises for MPs; James Sherwood melodically shows how tough the rich have it compared to the poor; Angela Barnes reminisces on the awkwardness of helping one's father with the stocktaking when he owns a sex-shop; Elis James on getting sacked for slouching; Jo Glanville explains how Prince Charles is acting above the law; and why the Russians put a dead man on trial last week; while Brendon Burns is filthy, acute and hilarious as usual.
Brendan Burns came to my LA garbage heap apartment to talk about his rock bottom. Brendan's rock bottom lasted for 3 years and while he was there he did A LOT of drugs. Especially psychedelic drugs. And they were not kind to him.
LA vet Bill Dawes and Australian powerhouse Brendon Burns joined Matt in the offices above Laugh Factory in our longest (and most educational) podcast to date. They discuss everything from Australian genocide to joking about rape, and virtually everything in between. A must listen!

2012 #12: F*ck C*nt F*ck - Brendon Burns and Grainne Maguire. Having conquered the world with his 'Who remembers Pacers and Clive Doig?' routines, Rich tries to emulate Michael 'Man Drawer' McIntyre with his new 'lost sunglasses are always found when you buy new sunglasses' bit. But perhaps he feels the need to fill a bit, in case his guest Brendon Burns has fallen asleep again. Fortunately Burns is awake and has much to say, allowing Rich to use the podcast as an excuse to catch 40 winks himself. There's stuff about Mick Foley, drug addiction, offensiveness in comedy and how comedy persona can override personality and, the truth about why Brendon did not last on I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here. Plus Rich pitches a Freaky Friday swap to the 16 year-old lad in the front row. With stand-up from Grainne Maguire.
