Drawing on Romans 13, Augsburg Confession Article XVI, and Luther's treatise "Whether Soldiers Too Can Be Saved," we explore the just war tradition through the lens of the two realms, vocation, and the conscience of the baptized believer. We also ask the harder questions: What restrains us from bloodlust when our cause is right? How do we care for the veteran whose memories still trouble him decades later? And where does the cross fit when the sword has done its terrible, necessary work?  The Rev. By the time anyone reads or listens to this podcast, the situation with Iran may be completely different than when I write this. In keeping with the intent of this podcast series, however, I thought it might be worthwhile to explore the possibility of intervention in Iran in a way that is in line with the enduring principles of war. In doing this I am not advocating such an intervention. Neither do I express any opinion about whether or not it is even a good idea. My intent is to frame a possible military intervention within the framework of time proven successful strategy and Just War criteria. Alan Skorski interviewed Thane Rosenbaum whose recent book, Beyond Proportionality: Israel's Just War in Gaza outlines how the IDF not only fought within accordance of international law, but performed at unparalleled levels to minimize non-combatant fatalities that no other army in the world has ever done. Following Rosenbaum's summary of his book during the opening of the interview the focus then shifted to his recently published a column, titled, If the Horseshow Fits…Saddle Up which raised awareness of the rise of antisemitism from the right, which was unheard of just a few years ago. According to Professor Rosenbaum, the antisemitism on the left has been more organized from the start than anything coming from the right. “The left has a stranglehold” on some of the most important institutions which hold all the reigns of power, starting with our universities. In sharp contrast, the antisemitism coming from the right, which Rosenbaum calls “guttural antisemitism,” isn't anything new, just the same old trash we heard in the 1930's, and from antisemites in every previous century. On the left, there is unity in their war against Israel, Zionism, and the Jews. Whereas on the Right, who else do they really have besides Tucker Carlson, who, according to Professor Rosenbaum, isn't very educated, and nothing he says is terribly profound. During the interview, Skorski reminded his audience that while the Left is united with little to no fracture in their ranks, there are many pro-Israel Christians who have pushed back hard against the charlatans masquerading as Christians like Carlson, Candace Owens, and most recently, Carrie Prejean Boller, who was briefly on President Trump's Board to promote religious liberty until her antisemitic outbursts, including support for Candace Owens, got her removed from the Board. Can strategic bombing of cities ever be justified? In the previous episode of this podcast series (E126), Col. Altieri said that the air force always considers itself revolutionary. Before I began recording, he cited strategic bombing in World War Two as both revolutionary and consistent with Clausewitz's concept of making things so painful that the enemy will not continue to resist. I responded, saying that strategic bombing of the civilian population was a war crime and violates Just War criteria. Afterwards, I thought my response might have been hasty. In this episode, I re-look the idea of strategic bombardment, not as we might see it today, but as it was believed during WWII. In any examination of history, we need to see things as they were understood by those making decisions at that time, not from our current perspective.   Music: Holst, G.
