After Pahoran's death (remember that great leader who fought to retake the government with Moroni) he had 3 sons who each wanted to take his place as chief judge of the land. There was an election and Pahoran Jr. was selected. Paanchi, his brother was mad! He got those who voted for him to rebel… they got Kishkumen to go and kill Pahoran the new chief Judge (his own brother). Kiskumen made all those who had rebelled promise or covenant they would keep the murder a secret. Kishkuman then waited for an opportunity to kill another chief judge when Helaman was elected. The Book of Mormon tells us this was the start of the secret society called the Gadianton Robbers. It tells us that this society caused the entire destruction of the Nephites. Heavenly Father wants to warn us and help us detect evil designs in our days. The Holy Ghost will help guide us and keep us safe.

The Nephite society faces political instability following the death of Chief Judge Pahoran, leading to contentious elections and the rise of rebellion. As political factions vie for power, Kishkumen's secretive band of murderers emerges, culminating in the assassination of Pahoran and his successor. Meanwhile, Coriantumr, an apostate Nephite, leads a massive Lamanite army to a surprising victory over Zarahemla, only to be outmaneuvered by Moronihah's strategic brilliance. Amidst the chaos, Helaman's sons, Nephi and Lehi, embark on a mission to preach the gospel. Their efforts lead to astonishing conversions among the Lamanites, who surpass the Nephites in righteousness. However, the Gadianton robbers infiltrate Nephite society, driving it into deeper corruption while the Lamanites strive to eradicate the band from their midst. Despite brief periods of peace and prosperity, the Nephites' increasing wickedness and the rise of secret combinations spell impending doom. This episode highlights the stark contrast between the declining Nephite nation and the spiritually ascending Lamanites, emphasizing themes of repentance, righteousness, and the power of faith amidst adversity.
Moroni and his Nephite captains have been engaged in war against their enemies a long time. They are short on supplies and are not getting additional soldiers for help. They are in serious trouble. Moroni is very upset with the government that they are not sending the additional help His men need. In his anger he writes a mean letter to the Chief Judge, Pahoran. He says some very unkind things and many things that were not true. Pahoran does not get angry. Pahoran writes back and says not only that he forgives Moroni for being upset, but that He loves him for his great heart and desire to do what is right. Pahoran is a great example to us to not take offense and get upset back. But to forgive and focus on the good in others.
Moroni accuses Pahoran of neglecting their armies, being lazy, and a selfish traitor. Pahoran does not get angry. He thanks Moroni for his letter and asks him to come help him get the government back from the King men so they can get sufficient supplies and armies to regain peace in the land. “Life is perfect for none of us! Rather than being judgemental may we have the pure love of Christ for others.” Pahoran is a great example of this.
Why don't we have more kids in the church named after Pahoran??? I think he is as much of a hero as Ammon, Nephi, etc. And what makes him a hero is very practical and very needed to help improve human relationships - especially when we feel misunderstood or wrongfully accused.
Pahoran responds with sympathy to Moroni's letter, and informs him of the rebellion against the government in Zarahemla. This is a reading of Alma Chapter 61. Here is a link to the text: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/alma/61?lang=eng

Pahoran writes back to Moroni and tells him of the rebellion that has happened in the capital city of Zarahemla.
When Moroni receives a letter from Helaman, telling him everything that's been happening in the western part of the land, he decides to send his own letter to Chief Judge, Pahoran.

Matthew 11-12 + Luke 11 Come Unto Me - Matthew 11:28-30 28 ¶ Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you crest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Footnote for 29a is for the word YOKE. It says, “Jesus Christ, Taking the Name of.” So when we take His yoke - we are taking His name, or making covenants by being baptized. When we are yoked WITH Him, He is able to offer us this help. Footnote 29c is for the work MEEK. The footnote for this says, “gentle and humble.” In the talk by Elder Bendar called “Meek and Lowly in Heart” Elder Bednar discusses in detail the attribute and gift of meekness. He says, “Please notice the characteristic the Lord used to describe Himself in the following scripture: “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” Instructively, the Savior chose to emphasize meekness from among all the attributes and virtues He potentially could have selected. A similar pattern is evident in a revelation received by the Prophet Joseph Smith in 1829. The Lord declared, “Learn of me, and listen to my words; walk in the meekness of my Spirit, and you shall have peace in me.” Meekness is a defining attribute of the Redeemer and is distinguished by righteous responsiveness, willing submissiveness, and strong self-restraint. This quality helps us to understand more completely the respective reactions of Amulek, Pahoran, President Nelson, and President Eyring.” Footnote 29f is for the word REST. President Nelson has gone into great detail about this word, and I would direct you to His talk “Overcome the World and Find Rest.” The footnote does tell us that we can look up the word COMFORT though. I love this idea of finding comfort in our souls when we come unto Him. That is what he offers and comfort and rest can be one and the same. A Certain Woman in the Company In Luke 11 verses 27-28 we learn about a Certain woman of the company. There was a group gathered and Jesus cast out devils of a man that was dumb and heal him. Then Jesus taught that a house divided will fall. Then in 27 we read ... I believe that Christ's response in 28 is one of agreeing and also comparing. Just as our mothers and their nurturing us as babes is essential and something to rejoice in - so it shall be rejoiced that those that hear the word of God and keep it. Alma 52 - Helaman 8 The Army of Helaman Forms. Lamanites had begun to take possession of some of the Nephite lands. The Nephites needed help - but the Anti-Nephi-Lehies had made the covenant to not fight anymore. In verse 16 we see the beginning of the formation of the Army of Helaman. Description of them in verses 20-23 The Webster 1850 Dictionary defines “Stripling” as: A youth in the state of adolescence, or just passing from boyhood to manhood; a lad. These are going to be like the teachers in your ward. Maybe some priests. That's who these young men were. 2,000 Stripling Warriors. 56:17, 19, 44-48, 54-56 2,060 – 57: 5-6, 20-21, 25-27 58:11-12, 33 + 37 Moroni's Epistle to Pahoran Chapter 59: Moroni is pretty upset with Pahoran. He isn't sure why things aren't being sent, and why they aren't getting the help that they were anticipating. He writes a kind - yet firm, letter to Pahoran. Chapter 60: Pahoran writes back and explains that the people have come against the government and are trying to overthrow everything. Moroni leaves and comes to help Pahoran with the situation. They were successful and they were able to get things under control again. Nephites vs Lamanites The Book of Helaman is actually the Son of Helaman. So he begins this book. We learn immediately about the darkness that is happening all around. One of my favorite verses is Helaman 3:23. They had been going through this period where the Nephites were extremely righteous and prospering. Then by Helaman 4 the Nephites are now weak like the Lamanites when they are fighting. Then they repent and do well for a while, then cycle back down. It's constant up and down through a lot of these chapters. Nephi + Lehi (The Son's of Helaman) Helaman (the son of Helaman) gets old, and gives the land and everything over to his sons Nephi and Lehi. They are great missionaries. Chapter 5 verses 6-7 – family history. Then verses 9 - 12 Nephi and Lehi go and teach. They are reject and everyone is very unhappy with them. Verse 23, 24, 26. Voice comes 3 times. 31, 32, 33 Some repent and are encircled with fire along with Nephi and Lehi. Nephi and Lehi have done great missionary work and the Nephites and Lamaites are living and working side by side. Exceedingly Wicked Three years into that situation - they became exceedingly wicked. Secret murderers and robbing and other things begin to take hold of these people. Chapter 6, verses 21, 27, 28, 29 - all of it is Satan. Chapter 6:34, 36 Chapter 7 and 8 are the beginning of the Lamaintes being the righteous people. Verse 7 - how many times do we wish that? However, Nephi went through a LOT of really hard things. Sometimes the grass seems greener - but it's important to remember it's not. Prophets Called by God Chapter 8: 10-20 The importance of prophets who are led by God.

Alma 62-63We are wrapping up the Book of Alma in this episode and the principle of UNITY is what stands out to me.Mormon points out to us that it is the influence of the righteous who lived amongst the Nephites who enabled them to conquer their enemies and finally drive out the Lamanites. In our lives, when contention arises and there is a difference of perspective, how can we strive to seek after righteousness?I believe the examples of Pahoran, Captain Moroni, and the other Nephites who flocked to them for the cause of Liberty show us the power of the prinicple of Unifying or Uniting with one another.Though anger weakens our unity with each other, what blessings does Unity bring? In these final chapters we can see that Unifying brings stability, healing, and synergy. What does unity require? It requires acceptance, but what does the spirit of unity enable us with? The ability to allow God to intervene on our behalf and allow His grace to heal and accomplish what we cannot do on our own.Without the Lord's strength, the Nephites could not have done what they did on their own - they were out numbered and often found themselves weakened by the dissent of their own brethren, but the Lord's grace still enabled them to be victorious when they unified under the cause of liberty and exercised faith in Jesus Christ.

These names and the narrative in Helaman 1 are arguably more true to life and consistent with the ancient Egyptian origins of the Book of Mormon than any fiction writer in 1829 could have hoped. bit.ly/knowhy574
Moroni and Pahoran would live the rest of their lives happy at home with their families. But they would sometimes remember the war and they would think to themselves, “That war was terrible, so terrible that no one will ever want to fight again. And for that alone, it will have been worth it. Our terrible memories, our injuries, and the people who died have all served a higher purpose. And that purpose is peace. And we will have peace, finally. After all these years.” And Mornoi and Pahoran will die believing they have established peace. A peace that will last a long time if not forever. But they will be wrong. And they die young from their injuries. And the peace they established also dies young. Only ten years later the fighting begins again. Listen to hear the full story.

We consider the great patience that Pahoran must have had to respond to Moroni's scathing epistle the way he did and we reflect on the principles of preparation and planning that we learn from his letter. Elder David A Bednar: “One of the greatest indicators of our own spiritual maturity is revealed in how we respond to the weaknesses, the inexperience, and the potentially offensive actions of others. A thing, an event, or an expression may be offensive, but you and I can choose not to be offended—and to say with Pahoran, ‘it mattereth not.’”

We also reflect on how his comments have some merit but could have been tempered. Book of Mormon Central: That Mormon preserved Moroni’s letter to Pahoran in his abridgment is remarkable. It shows a level of honesty on Mormon’s part, since he was willing to include information that portrayed Moroni, one of his heroes (Alma 48:17),3 in an unflattering light.
Moroni fortifies the lands of the Nephites—They build many new cities—Wars and destructions befell the Nephites in the days of their wickedness and abominations—Morianton and his dissenters are defeated by Teancum—Nephihah dies, and his son Pahoran fills the judgment seat. About 72–67 B.C.

Pahoran doesn't get a ton of attention in the Book of Mormon, but in Alma 61 he teaches us a powerful lesson. Today we'll talk about what Pahoran has to teach us about road rage and saving friendships. What do we do when someone doesn’t meet our expectations? Today we’ll review Moroni’s response when his expectations aren’t met by Pahoran, and discuss the difference between placing trust and suspicion in our relationships with others.Alma 58-62 Here’s a great episode on the same topic by my favorite leadership guru, Andy Stanleyhttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/andy-stanley-leadership-podcast/id290055666?i=1000144194701

Careful consideration of the clues and details about Pahoran reveals him to be a principled and righteous leader worthy of study and emulation. Read at bit.ly/knowhy573
'The Law of Liberty' - The Stripling Warriors fight bravely and are miraculously preserved - Ammoron, Moroni, Helaman & Pahoran all write epistles - Moroni & Ammoron contend with doctrine in their war epistles - As Irenaeus explains, the Law of Liberty (Agency) is a part of Christianity - Ezra Taft Benson states that Liberty in government is a basic part of our religion. Shiloh and Ben discuss the last half of the War Chapters in the Book of Mormon and question some possibilities that the War Chapters may have been the first thing that Mormon compiled in the Book of Mormon as a young military general. Why and in what way are the Anti Nephi Lehis talked about differently in Alma 53 and 56 than in Alma 26? Captain Moroni is a complicated character that is often quick-to-anger and condemnation, but he consistently expresses a strength of heart and mind to cease bloodshed and fighting mid-battle to let the enemy go free with an oath. After Captain Moroni breaths many threatenings and admonitions against Pahoran that turn out to be unsubstantiated, as Pahoran's humble response to Captain Moroni also has some very interesting parallels worthy to juxtapose from the Beatitudes in Jesus Christ's Sermon on the Mount. While we have the Nephite record of what happened, what new insights would we have into the every day lives of perhaps the majority of Lamanites who didn't want to fight (read Alma 47:2). We don't get their story, but if we did would it soften our hearts towards them?
This is a story about a man named Pahoran. He was the President of the Nephites and he lived in a big white house where he ran the affairs of the entire Nephite kingdom. He was the one who put Moroni in charge of the army. He liked Moroni. And he trusted Moroni. But when Moroni came to him and told him that they needed to chase Amalickiah out, Pahoron did not know what to do. On one hand, Amalickiah's ideas were dangerous. But on the other hand, kicking out Amalickiah would not necessarily get rid of his bad ideas. Because ideas are like gum. Someone you hardly know might spit it out on the ground, and you might step on it, and that gum will stick to your shoe for years to come. But, Pahoran chose to trust Moroni because Moroni was smart. And more importantly, because Moroni was good. And so Pahoran gave his permission to drive Amalickiah out of the land. And you know what happened after that? Listen on for the full story.
Moroni censures Pahoran and Pahoran CHOOSES his response.
Today we read Alma 53-63. War continues. We meet Helaman's group of 2000 young warriors from the people of Ammon. Moroni writes an angry letter to Pahoran and Pahoran explains the problems happening back in the capital. Alma 43-52 Synopsis:We are now getting into the WAR CHAPTERS! These chapters might look like the screenplay for the next big Hollywood blockbuster, but there are great spiritual lessons in them for our lives today...(43) Alma and his sons preach the gospel, while the Zoramites and other dissenters become Lamanites. To defend the Nephites against the Lamanites in battle, Captain Moroni prepared his people with armor and fortifications, while the Lamanites were equipped with offensive weapons but no shields or armor. His efforts teach us how we can find safety in the spiritual battles we face today. (44) Moroni commands the Lamanites to make a covenant of peace or be destroyed. Zarahemna rejects the offer, tries to attack Moroni and gets scalped! (45) Alma prophesies the destruction of Jerusalem and dissention grows within the church. (46) Amalickiah conspires to be king and brings his forces against the Nephites. Captain Moroni raises the “Title of Liberty”; written upon it are the words “In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and our peace, our wives, and our children”. (47) Amalickiah uses treachery and murder to become the king of the Lamanites. (48) Amalickiah then incites the Lamanites against the Nephites, but Moroni proves himself to be a great leader and a great soldier once again! (49) The invading Lamanites attempt to take the Nephite cities of Ammonihah and Noah, but fail. (50) Yet more wars, and destructions befall the Nephites in the days of their wickedness and abominations. Morianton and his army of dissenters is defeated by Teancum. Nephihah dies, and his son Pahoran fills the judgment seat. (52) The ‘king-men’ seek to change the law and set up a king. Pahoran and the freemen are supported by the voice of the people, while Teancum repels the Lamanite invasion and slays Amalickiah. (53) Ammoran succeeds Amalickiah as king of the Lamanites. Captain Moroni, Teancum, and Lehi lead the Nephites in a victorious war against the Lamanites; many of them surrender to the Nephite armies, and the city of Mulek is retaken.
The stripling warriors fight battle after battle and are preserved by their faith while thousands of Nephites perish. Moroni and Pahoran join forces to re-establish the government in Zarahemla. Ephesians 2:8 D&C 112:24-26 James 5:16
Talk about a man of God! How do we become Pahoran and act- not re-act?!!! Only with the spirit are we able to see through accusations and threats to what the Lord would have us center on and learn.
In front of a slo-mo explosion, five heroes walk in a line: Captain Moroni, Pahoran, Lehi, Teancum and Helaman. Basically the Avengers of the Book of Mormon, this was their final battle.
Yea!! In this episode, Shelby lets us all know about her shark obsession, her love of animals of all sorts (she left out the ducks) and her Pahoran addiction. Be excited... especially for the Twilight giggle at the end.
