In today’s episode of Laughs From The Past, we’ll dive into a little-talked about story of Mexican-American relations and a violent frontier society—culminating in a murderous spree that sent the people of the Colorado Territory into a panic in the spring of 1863.The Wild West was truly wild. Welcome to America’s first serial killer, folks.
Dr Henry Howard Holmes was America’s first serial killer. The charismatic criminal lured his victims to his hotel dubbed “the murder castle” during the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. The building was riddled with trap doors and booby traps, a crematorium and gas chambers. The rumours of his depravity were far reaching and propelled H. H. Holmes to infamy. However the man dubbed America’s first serial killer may not have been responsible for the murders of as many people as he claimed. As director and author John Borowski explains, Holmes derived pleasure from the planning of his crimes, not necessarily carrying them out. Borowski has written a book about Holmes, and directed a true crime documentary following his life and crimes. Once arrested, Holmes was prolific in claiming murders to have been by his hand, though some alleged victims came forward to attest that they were very much alive and unharmed. Fuelled by desire for fame, or bloodlust, the case of H. H. Holmes and the murder hotel has as many twists and turns as the hotel in which they were carried out. In 1896, Henry Howard Holmes was found guilty of murder in Philadelphia. When the media and the public found out that he had build a demented "Murder Castle" in a Chicago suburb, he became a national sensation. He confessed to killing twenty-seven people, but the newspapers would attribute hundreds of murders to the man who would later be known as "America's First Serial Killer." In this episode, Greg and Chris try and separate fact from fiction and dive into the murder castle and Holmes's first victims. He was the first of a new breed of American celebrity – the handsome, debonair and super intelligent mass murderer. His legend, fueled by his own insatiable appetite for exaggeration, would turn him into a monster, ‘the arch-fiend of the age’ and the ‘greatest criminal of this expiring century’. His “Murder Castle”, situated at the heart of the world’s greatest exhibition, was reputedly the scene of unspeakable horrors.
