In this episode we talk to author Phil Cross about his book “The Other Trench”. Phil's Great Great Grandfather served with the German Army throughout the Great War and kept a detailed diary of his experiences on the Western Front, and also the Russian and Italian battlefields. We hear how Phil discovered the diary and what it means to him. We discuss his German heritage and how he feels about Alexander. We discover how Alexander picked up postcards belonging to British soldiers and how Phil tracked down these men and visited their final resting places, as well as learning about the hell of Loos in 1915 from a German perspective. And we uncover a forgotten truce between German and Russian soldiers.
There was a story this week about President Biden's great-great-grandfather who fought in the Civil War. He was given a dishonorable discharge for stabbing someone. President Lincoln pardoned him. KSL Newsradio's Amanda Dickson asked her guests on A Woman's View whether children are responsible for the sins of their fathers? Their children? Their siblings? Her guests this week include singer and songwriter Cherie Call and Sharla Jessop, president of Smedley Financial.
Laurin Mack loves Chicago and loves beer. So maybe it was inevitable that she would go on to tap into her great-great-great grandfather's brewing legacy, and share his story of the beers that “built Chicago.” She re-opened the Conrad Seipp Brewing Company in 2020, and began the process of excavating the recipe for his pre-Prohibition pale ale. Several years, and two styles of beer later, you can now purchase Seipp beer at select Binny's and Jewel locations. Reset sat down with Mack to learn more about “the beer that built Chicago” and the process of re-creating the past for the present moment. Photographer Drew Gardner has a passion for history. His long-term project, “The Descendants,” wherein he recreates famous portraits of historical figures featuring their direct offspring, is his most visible expression of this interest. But like a lot of people who study history, Gardner has in recent years begun to contemplate more deeply the question of whose stories have been judged worthy of preservation, and whose have been allowed to fade into obscurity. That was how he decided to shift his specific focus to locating and photographing Black American descendants of Civil War veterans. You can take a look at Gardner's photographs and read magazine editor Jennie Rothenberg Gritz's exploration of their meaning here. On the latest episode of the Smithsonian podcast “There's More to That,” I speak with Janisse Flowers and her 9-year-son, Neikoye, who are descended from the Civil War drummer boy David Miles Moore Jr. After some reflection, Janisse and her husband decided to grant Gardner's request to photograph Neikoye dressed in a replica of Moore's Union Army uniform. Both Janisse and Neikoye share their surprise over how this experience made them more conscious of their heritage. I'm also joined by Gardner himself, who describes the challenges—and, he hopes, the potential benefits—of asking Black Americans to revisit one of the most painful chapters of America's history by (almost) literally stepping into their ancestors' shoes. I am your host, Melissa Oliveri. In our previous episode, Lucas came to the realisation that he had somehow travelled back to 1920s Pocket, and was living with Charlotte and Edward Carnifex and their son James. In today's episode we read Chapter 20 – Moonlight - in which Magpie and Lucas live parallel lives across time and spaceNow, it's time to settle in… grab a blanket, and a warm drink… and let's get started.A year has gone by. An entire year alone in Scotland without Lucas. They hadn't found any sign of anyone, let alone a large horse, entering the forest in the days following Lucas' disappearance. The first few months, Magpie spent a tremendous amount of time and energy trying to put the pieces together, trying to figure out what happened and where Lucas had gone. It just didn't seem possible to her that he would just… vanish! But after endless weeks with not even the smallest clue as to his or Cormorant's whereabouts, Magpie was confronted with the sad reality that he probably wasn't coming back. Though deep inside a part of her still held out hope, she pushed herself to move on. Her mother came to stay with her for a while, but she needed to get back to Pocket to take care of their house and continue her work. For Magpie, some days are easier than others, today is one of the others. It seems everywhere she turns something reminds her of Lucas and their time in Pocket. She hears the meow of a barn cat and thinks of Scarlet, she makes blackberry pancakes with chocolate chips from his Grandma Gemma's recipe. Now, she sits by the small window at the top of the stairs looking out at the sky, watching the moon rise against the fading blue sky… Suddenly she hears a knock at the door downstairs…~~~~~~Thousands of miles and several decades away, Lucas is sitting in his bedroom window at the farmhouse, the bedroom that would eventually become Magpie's room, looking up at the very same moon and thinking of Magpie, remembering all the times they would walk home by moonlight from their adventures exploring the area, having forgotten, once again, to keep an eye on the clock. He wonders what she has been up to the past year, what conclusion she came to regarding his disappearance. He's quite certain the truth has not occurred to her, no one would believe that he time travelled nearly 100 years and a whole continent in one step… with a horse no less!Lucas has spent the year working alongside Edward Carnifex, learning carpentry. He's surprised by how much he enjoys it and how naturally it comes to him. He has now taken to repairing furniture and coming up with his own creations to sell at the farmer's market. He has taken on all sorts of projects from signs for local shops, to whittling animals as party favours. He has grown quite comfortable with his existence as Marius Corbeau in 1923. Things were more challenging and awkward at first, he knew most of the buildings in the small town, but none of the people, and they grew suspicious of him, a stranger, knowing so much about their town. But over the past several months he has been able to win them over, and word of his carpentry talents has spread, ensuring he is perpetually busy with work. One of the special orders he recently received came from none other than Mr. Nathaniel Shearwater. He asked Lucas to build a decorative box for his daughter Farfalla's birthday. Explaining that she loves birds, he asked Lucas to engrave the box with a feather. Lucas spent weeks building the box, and it is a stunning work of art, complete with a lock and feather-shaped key that he found at Bunting's General Store. Mr. Shearwater picked up the box earlier in the day and was so impressed he invited Lucas over for dinner tonight. Lucas is somewhat apprehensive… the last time he saw Farfalla she was over 100 years old! He hasn't met her yet in this time, until yesterday she and her sister Paloma had been away at boarding school. Lucas is deep in thought when a knock on the bedroom door startles him out of his reverie…~~~~~~The door creaks loudly as Magpie opens it, “Oh hi Julien, come on in!” she says, smiling warmly. Julien Sarcelle has returned from Paris to take over the caretaking at Carnifex House. Manon and Alfred have agreed to stay on for a few weeks to get him settled into his new role, then they will retire to the south of France. Magpie and Julien have been spending a lot of time together recently as he learns the ropes, and Magpie has invited him for a late dinner. “I'm a little intimidated,” she begins “I've heard Paris has some amazing food… hopefully you won't be disappointed!” she says to him.Julien laughs “I'm sure whatever you make will be wonderful,” he says warmly, taking off his cardigan and draping it over the back of a rocking chair. Though summer has just begun, there is still a chill in the Scottish sea air.“Okay well, I have put together some North American delicacies for you… are you ready?” she asks, a twinkle in her eye. Julien nods at her with anticipation. “Tonight, we are having…. Drumroll please….” At this Julien starts tapping his hands against his legs in a rapid drumroll. “… Mac and Cheese, Corn Dogs, some Cherry Cola to drink and to top it all off, homemade Apple Pie! Oh, but to keep you at ease, there will be ‘French' Fries,” she says, laughing. Julien is silent, staring at her. “What are these things? Are these foods? I cannot eat a dog!” He says, a horrified look on his face. Magpie starts blushing, “Oh no, they're not made with dogs, in fact these are veggie dogs there isn't any kind of meat in them at all, it…” Julien's raucous laughter cuts her off mid-sentence. He was just fooling with her! She gives him a push and smiles as she heads to the kitchen to grab their plates.~~~~~~Back in Pocket, Lucas turns to see Charlotte standing in the doorway. “You asked me to let you know when it was time to go,” she says, smiling at him.“Thank you,” he replies, swallowing the lump in his throat so she won't know how nervous he is. He heads downstairs, puts on his riding boots, and says goodbye to Charlotte and Edward before heading out the door. Lucas has been so busy today he neglected to take Cormorant out for a ride, so he has decided to take the long way over to the Shearwaters and give the horse a chance to stretch its legs. ““Hey Marius!” he hears upon entering the barn. It's Gordon Starling, nearly as tall as Lucas now. They've spent some time together over the past year. Lucas sees a lot of himself in Gordon, or perhaps it is the other way around… regardless, they both have a deep love of adventure and exploration. Gordon was a tremendous asset in helping Lucas navigate his new surroundings. Though he knew the town, there were still some stark differences, and Gordon was only too happy to bring Lucas up to speed. “I heard you were taking Cormorant out tonight; I've got him all saddled up for you!” he says. Considering Gordon is Lucas' Great-Great-Grandfather, Lucas thinks it's funny that Gordon looks up to him, almost like a big brother.“Thank you so much, Gordon! I appreciate it!” he says, walking over to Cormorant's stall. “Hello old friend,” he whispers to the horse. He feels a special bond with the animal, it is the only connection he has to his old reality. He leads Cormorant outside and hops into the saddle. Horseback riding has become second nature to him since living in this time where cars are a commodity mostly reserved for the wealthy. Lucas and Cormorant race through the fields behind the Starling and Carnifex farms, then cross the street to the rock quarry and Mirror Pond before heading toward the apple orchard behind Meadow Lane.Thank you so much for listening. I am your host, Melissa Oliveri. In our previous episode, Manon Sarcelle recounted the mysterious disappearances of several people in a conversation with Magpie. In today's episode we read Chapter 19 – One Step Forward, One Century Back - in which Lucas comes to terms with the fact that he has travelled back nearly a century to early 1920s Pocket. Now, it's time to settle in… grab a blanket, and a warm drink… and let's get started.Lucas has no notion of how long he's been sleeping. The past several hours, or days, are a haze… a kaleidoscope of blankets, muffled speaking around him, sipping soup from a mug, the crackling of a fire nearby. Finally, today he feels a little more clearheaded, and he sits up in bed to get his bearings. He is in a small, simple room that feels vaguely familiar. He notes a wooden dresser and wardrobe, with matching nightstand by the bed, a small wooden chair in the corner, and a handmade rug on the floor. On the nightstand he sees an antique oil lamp and a carafe with water, a half empty water glass next to it. A gentle knock on the door startles him, and the door slowly creaks open to let a smiling woman with gentle brown eyes into the room.“Good afternoon, Marius. How wonderful to see you sitting up, you must be feeling a bit better!” she says happily. “Is there anything I can get you? Perhaps some stew? Or maybe a cold washcloth for your face?” she asks.Lucas feels disoriented. He looks out the window and sees a familiar scene outside; Mirror Pond in the quarry, and Meadow Lane to its left, a blooming apple orchard behind it and people working in the fields on either side. “Wh-where am I?” he asks.“Oh dear, please forgive me, of course you must feel a little disoriented. You are just on the outskirts of a small town called Pocket. My name is Charlotte, Charlotte Carnifex. My husband Edward and I live here with our son James,” she says. Just then, Lucas hears the sound of a small bell and feels a sudden pressure on his feet at the end of the bed. He turns to look at sees a small cream-coloured cat with a brown face, paws, and tail. The cat gives him a knowing look with its striking blue eyes. “Scarlet!” he whispers under his breath.“Oh! This is Cerise, my cat! She doesn't like to feel left out, follows me absolutely everywhere!” laughs Charlotte.Slowly, the veil is lifted from Lucas' mind. The impossibility of the situation sending him reeling… He has time travelled. He is in Pocket. It must be sometime in the 1920s. Charlotte and Edward Carnifex are the owners of what would eventually become Magpie's house. Scarlet the cat, whose… ghost, for lack of a better word, would eventually visit Magpie in the future, is here now, alive and well, living under her original name of Cerise. How any of this is possible is far beyond his comprehension and trying to sort it out is far too overwhelming. Lucas decides to keep things simple. They think he is Marius Corbeau, so be it. He will assume the name until he can find a way home, a way back to Magpie.“You know, some stew and a cold washcloth sounds great,” says Lucas, smiling at Charlotte. She nods and turns toward the door. As she is about to step out, she mentions “Oh, you're probably wondering about your horse, we brought him to the stables next door, he is safe and well cared for. What an incredible animal he is, I've never seen anything like it! Where is he from?”“Cormorant… He came with me… from Europe…” stammers Lucas, realizing that the stories he heard about Marius and his horse are actually playing out as written. He starts to think of how those stories end, but pushes those thoughts to the back of his mind. He would be back home with Magpie in his own time long before any of that took place. Later that day Lucas feels well enough to get out of bed and explore his surroundings a little. Around the corner from his room, he sees the stairway to the attic in its original form, before Edward walled it off when they left the house in the terrible winter of 1925. He realizes that Magpie's closet hasn't been built yet, that it will probably be created at the same time as the attic stairway is hidden. Lucas heads up the staircase to the attic, flashbacks of he and Magpie just a couple of years ago… or 90 years into the future depending on how you look at it… bouncing around in his mind. The attic is relatively bare, though the cradle with James' name engraved on the side is up there, along with a rocking horse and dress form. He walks to the small round window that looks out the front of the house and sees Meadow Lane in the distance. Lucas is lost in thought when a sound behind him catches his attention, the bell on the cat collar. Cerise walks up to him and rubs up against his legs. “Hello old friend,” he says to the cat “Long time no see.” He bends down to scratch its ears and the cat purrs loudly. “Alright, why don't we head downstairs,” he says. The cat looks up at him with its large blue eyes, like it knows everything about everything; the past, the future… He wishes it could tell him how to get back home.“Ah, hello son! Back up and at ‘em, eh?” Edward Carnifex is sitting at the dining room table as Lucas is coming down the stairs.“Yes, feeling much better sir, thank you so much for your kindness and hospitality,” replies Lucas.“Make no mention of it, here in Pocket we help each other out!” he replies. “Charlotte told me you've come all the way from Europe, you and your beast of a horse!”“Yes, that's right,” replies Lucas. Technically, it's not a lie… he just hasn't mentioned that along with the distance he also travelled back nearly 100 years and has no idea how it happened.“Are you just passing through or will you be staying in town for a while? If you're needing work, I'm a carpenter and have been looking for an apprentice, I reckon you'd do a fine job,” he says, smiling warmly.“To be honest with you, I haven't quite decided what I'm going to do just yet, but for the time that I'm here I'd be honoured to learn from you and work by your side,” he says. Just then a boy, perhaps 14 years old, saunters into the room, his blond hair rebelliously pushing off his head in different directions.“Marius! I'd like you to meet our son, James! I've asked him to be my apprentice, but he has other notions… likes working with numbers and papers and the like this one, he'll make a fine businessman or accountant someday I reckon!” he says, playfully ruffling the boy's hair.“It's nice to meet you, James,” stammers Lucas, in awe that he is shaking hands with the boy who would grow up to be Magpie's Great-Great-Grandfather. The whole situation is surreal!“Nice to meet you as well, sir!” says the boy, smiling pleasantly, his handshake firm.“I've been meaning to check on my horse,” says Lucas “might you show me where to find him?” he asks.“Sure thing!” says James, motioning toward the back of the house. Lucas steps around the large dining room table, the same one that will still be in the room nearly 100 years later when Magpie and her mom move into the house. They walk through to the kitchen where Charlotte is busy baking pies and cleaning pots and pans. She smiles at them as they walk through. Lucas notes with amazement that the antique stove is also the same one he saw at Magpie's house. He shudders at the impossibility of it all and follows James out the back door.“We don't have stables at our house, but we keep our horses next door at the Starling's farm, so we brought your horse there too. He's something else ain't he?!” says James as they step between the fence rails separating the Carnifex's house from the one next door. At the sound of his last name, Starling, Lucas freezes in his tracks.“What did you say?” he asks.“I said he's somethin' else ain't he? Your horse I mean! Never seen anything like it!” repeats James.“No, I mean after that, did you say the Starling farm?” asks Lucas.“Oh yeah, they live next door. Nice folks. Always there to help if you need it. I'm sure you'll meet them sometime. The youngest boy, Gordon, he's always out and about exploring. We go to school together, but he misses a lot of days, goes out poking ‘round the fields and woods like he's discovered a new continent or sumthin',” says James, laughing.Gordon. Gordon Starling. Lucas remembers the name from his Grandma Gemma's ancient family photo album. She'd point out the different people in the photos, remembering most of their names, even the ones she hadn't met. She used to refer to him as Grandpa Gordon, which means he is Lucas' Great-Great-Grandfather!“You comin'?” shouts James, now several paces ahead of Lucas. Reeling, Lucas nods, and follows him into the field behind the house he was living in with his grandmother only a few months before.Thank you so much for listening. In this seventh and final episode of Series Two (sorry folks!), host Andrew meets professional genealogist and author, Emma Jolly. He'll be finding out how she got into family history, what it was like to work on TV shows Who Do You Think You Are? and Mancs In Mumbai, and ideas on how to encourage children to become interested in family history.Relatively Speaking - William Jolly Emma has chosen her paternal Great Great Grandfather, William Jolly born in 1842 in Montrose, Forfarshire (now Angus), Scotland, as the life story to share with us.It's a story set against British military history, and sees William travelling around the world wherever his work and family took him - including Scotland, Ireland, Malta, Norfolk in England, and a few places in London that have coincidentally been significant in Emma's life too. The Brick Wall - Elizabeth Holmes We're off to August 1832 during a cholera epidemic in Sedgeley, West Midlands, England, as Emma is trying to find clues about her maternal 5x Great Grandmother, Elizabeth Holmes. What's been puzzling Emma for so long, is the identity of Elizabeth's parents. Elizabeth is believed to have married in 1797 and Staffordshire, England, and died in 1827. Her mtDNA results - haplogroup T2b - are not giving any clear leads yet, so Emma is keen to find evidence to confirm Elizabeth's family. If you think you have any clues that can help Emma with her brick wall, then you can send her a tweet at @EmmaJolly or head over to our Contact form, and we'll pass your message on.Emma is happy to accept Andrew's offer of help, but little do they realise that they're about to be interrupted by a very unexpected visitor.---Episode Credits:Series Two, Episode SevenAndrew Martin (Host, Producer)Emma Jolly (Guest)John Spike (Sándor Petőfi)Father Christmas (Himself)JP Wright (Voice Actor)Show notes: familyhistoriespodcast.com©2021 The Family Histories Podcast

Caroline Randall Williams is an esteemed activist, author, poet, and professor at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. Caroline has been a featured guest on MSNBC and has penned a myriad of captivating articles on racial bias. Her New York Times essay "You Want a Confederate Monument? My Body Is a Confederate Monument" tells her story as the great-great granddaughter of the nefarious confederate hero, and KKK leader Edmund Pettus, that fathered a child with a formerly enslaved woman. On this episode Adrian and Caroline discuss the romanticism of the South, American patriotism, and how she uses her "white" or ancestral privilege to denounce the evils of America's past.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Peter Boykin, a history teacher in Detroit, Michigan, recounts the amazing story of his great-great grandfather named Johnson Chestnut Whittaker who was born into slavery in 1858 and was the subject of a book and TV movie titled, Assault at West Point. Whittaker would later become a teacher and a principal, which inspired Boykin to become an educator himself over a century later. Takia Maxxwell, one of Boykin's former students, also pays tribute to her former teacher, describing the impact he's had on her life. This story begins over 150 years ago (and perhaps well before that) and reminds us that Johnson Whittaker's impact (like so many teachers) lives on for generations.
Here is the wrap-up of the Kassner story. I was able to get some of my questions answered after I had published the previous podcast. Also, I tell the story about discovering my Great Great Grandfather may have helped a very famous magician, back in the day. That and more, check it out!

Simon's Great Great Grandfather was Isaac Manns. Convicted of the crime of Machine Breaking in Nottingham, UK in the early 1800s he was sent to Australia as a convict. So we ask the question "Was there a criminal in your family?" See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Thought it was about time I interviewed the man, the myth, the legend, Mr. Lincolnshire himself, Charles Anyan! We talk about the farm that's been in his family for over 200 years, his frankly disappointing lack of dodgy tattoos from his time in Australia, his Great Great Grandfather being a founder member of the National Farmers Union, and how he went from never even owning a pair of trainers to running a sub-4 hour marathon in just 9 months - what a guy.
Recently, the Cleveland Indians announced that they would be changing their nickname because it may be offensive to some people... This isn't something new; team logos and names deemed potentially “offensive” have often been retired at various points throughout time. As of late, there undoubtedly has been a recent surge of name changes which most likely directly correlate to the sensitive times of our current environment... Without judgment, one way or another, I want to explore this issue and try to figure out what exactly are we trying to accomplish with the name changes, and most importantly, are we as a society better off because of them? Let's dive in.

Bob Adams' Great-Great-Grandfather's battlefield commission at Gettysburg hangs on the office wall, a reminder of generations of service. But Bob Adams almost broke the tradition, a grandson of the CNO from the Naval Academy Class of 1926, Bob was “more interested in motorcycles and girls” than going into the military until he read an article about the then very secret Navy special warfare operatives. That article changed his course, and Bob Adams headed to the Naval Academy with the Class of 1973 determined to become a SEAL. Today, Adams is a retired physician, an author, and veteran who is still paying it forward. Visit the Swords and Seals website. The stops along the way suggest the course was not so straight and narrow. Because there were only three slots for the Class of 1973, for Adams spent time in the fleet before being accepted to BUD/S training. Adams would be one of eleven out of 70 to complete SEAL training and pin on the Trident. He would earn his MBA, enter the business world and hate it, and then decide, at the age of 35, to apply to medical school. With an Army scholarship in hand, Adams resigned his Navy commission, and his 0-5 rank, and became a freshly minted Second Lieutenant. He would become a Command Surgeon within Army Special Operations and also deploy to Iraq with the 82nd. And… build a private medical practice outside Raleigh, NC, then author two books, support veteran causes, and mentor entrepreneurs in medicine. He's busy even in retirement. We asked Bob to step into the Spotlight on the VeteranCrowd Network. Domo Arigoto, Mr. Robautobot. Sometimes, you just gotta make love on your best friend's head. Especially when that best friend is a sentient robot from another planet. But also only after you've saved the world from the other sentient robots from your best friend's planet. Also your best friend's other sentient robot friends stand there awkwardly while it happens? It doesn't really make any sense, and neither does this episode. Hi. We're the Shaggy Goose Egg Bois and Michael Bay is a lizard person, but you already knew that. Note: the man on the left side of the episode artwork photo is Andre's Great Great Grandfather, Everett. Andre asked us to place their photos side-by-side for his episode, as learning about Everett was a very special milestone for him in knowing his family history. Andre not only has this picture of Everett, but also has a bill of sale for Everett from when he was a slave.Andre Roberts is a Personal Trainer and Tennis Instructor who currently resides in Beverly Hills, CA. He was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and was raised in a single parent household with his two siblings. He experienced ongoing trauma as a child, including sexual assault, verbal and physical abuse, and intense prejudice and racism. Andre's experiences later served as fuel to his alcoholism and drug use as he entered high school, and later, adulthood. We are so thankful that Andre agreed to come on this podcast and not only share his story of recovery from drugs and alcohol, but also his life experiences as a black man in today's America, and how that has shaped him. As you'll hear in his story, Andre believes in the power of connecting with one person to set in motion a change for good. Andre is about to celebrate having 8 years of sobriety, and is engaged to a beautiful woman, Patty, who inspires him every day. We were SO inspired by our conversation with Andre, and we know you will be too! He is such an incredible human being, and we believe you'll walk away from this interview with more knowledge, along with feeling inspired to "find your lane" and go "all gas, no brakes" as Andre says into creating change within yourself and around you! :) Subscribe to The Courage to Change: A Recovery PodcastApple Podcasts | Google Play | Google Podcasts | SpotifyStitcher | iHeart | TuneIn | Overcast | SoundCloud Our Sponsor: Lionrock Recovery Connect with Us:Podcast Website | Podcast Instagram | Podcast FacebookLionrock Facebook | Lionrock InstagramQuestions, comments or feedback? In this episode a Light approaches Dante and starts speaking in Latin. This turns out to be his great-great grandfather, Cacciaguida, the father of Alighiero (who is in Purgatory). He represents strength and endurance in this sphere, and tells us about the story of the Old Florence and his life as a warrior. Overall themes are the generosity of true love vs. the immoralities of the self-serving love, music as a divine language, and the centrality of lineage and heritage. Amell told a crowd at Motor City Comic Con that he will debut Oliver Queen's classic goatee in Arrow's upcoming season. Amell did caution that the goatee may not be sticking around forever, possibly signaling that it will be more of an Easter egg than a lasting redesign to the character. He also made it clear that Green Arrow's Robin Hood hat won't be making an appearance. “I can't promise that I'm going to keep [the goatee] forever,” he said. “I can definitely promise that I'm not going to wear the stupid hat.” http://comicbook.com/dc/2018/05/20/arrow-season-7-stephen-amell-goatee/ Stephen Amell Says Next Arrowverse Crossover is Awesome, Talks Batwoman Casting (Date: 31 May 2018) Batwoman is coming to the Arrowverse, and fans are already champing at the bit for news. Amell wasn't really able to say very much about a major event story coming up several months from now. "I know the entire story of the crossover," Amell told the audience. "It's awesome, and I can't talk about it at all. Comicbook.com was on hand during The CW's recent Upfronts presentation, where Arrow star Stephen Amell announced that Batwoman will be introduced in the upcoming Arrowverse crossover. While it's unclear exactly how Batwoman will factor into the story, it was hinted that Gotham City will make an appearance, finally introducing it officially into the Arrowverse after years of being teased, name-dropped, and joked about. http://comicbook.com/dc/2018/05/31/stephen-amell-says-next-arrowverse-crossover-is-awesome-talks-ba/ Arrow's Stephen Amell Reveals New Approach For Season 7 (Date: 25 May 2018) Arrow fans may still be talking about the crazy Season 6 finale, but Stephen Amell already has his eyes and mind set squarely on Season 7. The actor recently spoke about the upcoming season and teased the show will be taking a new approach to how it tells its stories in Season 7. “I think that it's going to be...we can't go bigger than we went last year, so we're going more specific. . . . We are gonna introduce a new storytelling technique that I'm really excited about. All that I can say.” Stephen Amell couldn't keep a smile from creeping up his face as he talked about the new technique Arrow will use to tell its stories in Season 7. The idea to switch up how the show tells its stories could be tied to new showrunner Beth Schwartz. We have to speculate it will be tied to Oliver's incarceration in some way. After all, Arrow could be jumping a lot between prison and Star City, assuming we're trusting Stephen Amell, who said fans shouldn't expect the Green Arrow to be making any jailbreak situations happen. https://www.cinemablend.com/television/2423591/arrows-stephen-amell-reveals-new-approach-for-season-7 GENERAL DC NEWS: Chris 'Legends of Tomorrow' Season 4 Detailed Synopsis Teases Constantine & Magical Threats (Date: 17 May 2018) After defeating the demon Mallus by cuddling him to death with a giant stuffed animal named Beebo, the Legends are ready to ease off the gas. Sara (Caity Lotz) and her team join Ava Sharpe (Jes Macallan) and the Time Bureau to help clean up the last few remaining anachronisms. The job seems straightforward enough until Constantine (Matt Ryan) arrives to inform them that, in solving one major problem, they have created another, much larger one. When the Legends let time crumble in order to release and defeat Mallus, the barrier between worlds softened. History is now infected with “Fugitives” – magical creatures from myths, fairytales, and legends. Having been expelled throughout time by people like Constantine, these Fugitives are now returning to our world in droves and making a real mess of things. As the Time Bureau is distrustful of and ill-equipped to deal with magic, the Legends must team up with everyone's favorite demonologist to set history back on track. http://comicbook.com/dc/2018/05/17/legends-of-tomorrow-season-4-constantine-synopsis-the-cw/ NEXT EPISODE Part 2: Promo for Next Week's Episode 200th Episode of the Starling Tribune! Today is January 19th, 2018 and we have a great show for you this week including: Dr. Ed Lengel, joining us for our new weekly history segment: America Emerges - Military stories from WWI Mike Shuster, from the great war project blog looking deeper into Wilson’s 14 Points Sculptor Sabin Howard in our “A century in the Making” segment talking about integrating high tech 3D resources with a traditional master sculptors hands, eyes and clay Eagle Scout Benjamin Woodard (Wood-dard) shares his WW1 eagle scout project ... Author Joseph A. Williams introduces us to the fascinating story behind his new book, The Sunken Gold And Katherine Akey, with some great selections from the centennial of WWI in social media All that and more --- this week -- on WW1 Centennial News -- which is brought to you by the U.S. World War I Centennial Commission, the Pritzker Military Museum and Library and the Starr foundation. I’m Theo Mayer - the Chief Technologist for the Commission and your host. Welcome to the show. [MUSIC] Preface [MUSIC] Our theme this week is one that many of you will be able to relate to in a very direct way….. nasty, freezing, snowy, cold weather --- and its dramatic effect on the war effort. According the the National Weather Service - when the ball dropped in times square this past new year’s eve - it was the most frigid new years in exactly 100 years - and back in 1918 that frigid weather carried on through January. Let me set this up… In our episode #50 that we produced in Mid December, we were joined by Dr. Sean Adams - a historian expert on coal in america. He told us that there was plenty of coal production in the US, but there was a big problem with delivering it where it was needed because of the intense demand by the war effort on the national railroad systems. This week, 100 years ago it all comes to a head with freezing temperatures, blizzards, and an already overburdened rail system breaking down. The wartime government, driven by the Energy Administration choose this moment to step in - and as they were wont to do 100 years ago - they step in with a pretty heavy foot - to the protest of a lot of very unhappy citizens, industries and communities. There is a lot to unpack here as as we jump into our wayback machine to look at 100 years ago this week - in the war that changed the world! [SOUND EFFECT TRANSITION] World War One THEN 100 Year Ago This Week It’s the second week of January, 1918. Just last month, in December, the Government took over and nationalized the railroads and put them under the direction of Treasury Secretary McAdoo. It has become quickly obvious that there is a big problem with a lack of available railroad cars in the Midwest and West - the cars are were all bunched up in the east coast ports. McAdoo’s new US Railroad Administration is working to alleviate this problem, by dedicating a week - starting January 14th to re-organizing the rail cars from where they are to where they are needed… but the plan freezes up thanks to minus 10 to minus 20 degree fahrenheit temperatures across the midwest accompanied by nasty blizzards. Everything grinds to a halt… [SOUND EFFECT] DATELINE: Sunday January 13, 1918A Headline in the NY Times proclaims:GARFIELD TO CUT COAL --- TO NEEDS And the story reads: Federal Agents of the fuel administration in NY have received full authority to employ every facility at their command to move coal from the New Jersey Terminal to Manhattan. Officials here tonight were told that there would be 262,000 tons available tomorrow but that only 20,000 tons would be moved because of the unusual weather conditions The next day - the challenges continue on the eastern seaboard DATELINE: Monday, January 14, 1918A Headline in the NY Times reads:AMPLE COAL FOR CITY'S NEEDS AWAITS FUEL ADMINISTRATORS ON JERSEY SHORE And the story includes: Reeve Schley, New York County Fuel Administrator was asked why they feared an acute coal crisis in the next few days - He replied that he does not doubt the reports of 465,000 tons available at New Jersey’s Tidewater, but that only 20-30 thousand tons were being brought into the city a day - which is only 1/2 enough - but ice in the harbor and many tugs damaged by the ice floes are preventing more. The same day another articles sets the stage for the following week’s bombshell: [SOUND EFFECT] Headline: FUEL AND FOOD FOR NEW YORK FIRST; THEN COAL FOR SHIPS, MCADOO ORDERS;INDUSTRIES MAY CLOSE The story reads: Coal for domestic use and vital public utilities in New York Districts shall receive preference. Foodstuffs shall come second and coal for bunkering of the overseas fleet third. This drastic action will make necessary the temporary suspension of many of the industries of New York not directly essential to the war program and that some of the other industries might have to operate only part time. In other words, the government is setting a priority: coal for personal heating, food for the people and coal for the ships waiting to head to europe while it is willing to shut down a major portion of New York's industries, This will put 10s of thousands out of work as employers shut down their factories and facilities. This is a precursor for Thursday’s big announcement that takes these ideas onto a national scale to a shocked nation! [SOUND EFFECT] Dateline: Thursday - January 17, 1918From the Official Bulletin - the government’s War Gazette - published by George Creel for the Wilson Administration:HEADLINE:FUEL ORDER STOPS CERTAIN INDUSTRIESFROM BURNING COAL ON DESIGNATED DAYSNECESSARY WAR WORK NOT INCLUDED The story leads with: The order of the United States Fuel Administrator directs the curtailment In consumption of fuel by certain businesses starting Tomorrow and For Five Consecutive Days and Thereafter on Every Monday Beginning January. 28th. In other words, the government has stepped in, and is telling the majority of US industries - except those they specifically exempt - that US Industry is shutting down for 5 days and then every Monday coming up. This is a lightning bolt through the heart of the nation. [SOUND EFFECT] The front page of the NY Times reads: SHUT-DOWN OF INDUSTRIES FOR FIVE DAYS;BEGINS FRIDAY; NINE IDLE MONDAYS FOLLOW;WASHINGTON ORDER STARTLES THE COUNTRY! The next day newspapers from all around the country react…. Here are some examples: Utica, NY: This is a staggering blow. By stopping the mills and factories here, it throws thousands of people out of employment. It takes thousands of dollars away from working people who have never needed it more than this winter. Baltimore, Maryland: No such extreme measure as this was ever dreamt of by the American People Chicago, Illinois: At a word of command from Washington - the greatest industrial sections of the nation stand idle.. A catastrophe to be faced bravely! St. Louis, Missouri: Fuel Administrator Garfield's drastic order is a confession of incompetency and also an indication of lack of courage and ability to deal with the coal situation Hartford, Connecticut: The news seems almost incredible - if it had come from Germany's Kaiser William it would be more easily understood! Wheeling, West Virginia: The administration's coal measure is the most drastic industrial order issued in the history of the nation and is without precedent, but it is justified by the prevailing conditions Boston, Massachusetts: We had hoped we should not have to resort to such extreme measures, but hesitate to characterize them as unwise or unnecessary! And from Charleston SC: The Coal Conservation Order issued from Washington will put the patriotism of the American People and especially of American Business to a very stern test. The next day President Wilson chimes in: [SOUND EFFECT] DATELINE: Saturday January 19, 1918In the Official Bulletin the headline reads:President Upholds Fuel Curtailment Order,Declaring It Was Absolutely Necessaryto Relieve Railroad Traffic Congestion President Wilson issues the following statement I was, of course, consulted by Mr. Garfield before the fuel order was issued, and fully agreed with him that it is necessary, much as I regret the necessity. This war calls for many sacrifices, and sacrifices of the sort called for by this order are infinitely less than sacrifices of life which might otherwise be involved. It is absolutely necessary to get the ships away, it is absolutely necessary to relieve the congestion at the ports and upon the railways, it is absolutely necessary to move great quantities of food, and it is absolutely nec- essary that our people should be warmed in their homes if nowhere Else. Halfway measures would not have accomplished the desired ends. I have every confidence that the result of action of this sort will justify it and that the people of the country will loyally and patriotically respond to necessities of this kind as they have to every other sacrifice involved in the war. We are upon a war footing, and I am confident that the people of the United States are willing to observe the same sort of discipline that might be involved in the actual conflict itself. You know Mike, we run around living our lives in the world without thinking a lot about how it got to be what it is - But when you read Wilson’s 14 points - it really feels like you are seeing the blueprint and the foundation for the modern world order…. He really helped define a new world - didn’t he!? MIKE: Yes he did, Theo and the headline for my post this week is: A BLUE PRINT FOR POST-WAR PEACE - Wilson’s Fourteen Points Excite the World. The American President an Instant Hero [MIKE POST] Mike Shuster from the Great War Project blog. We are always promoting them, and the other day someone asked me why - I thought it was a good question - first of all they do a great job! Their stories are clean, short, well researched and really accessible. Also, being over in Europe, they come at the subject from a really great broad perspective - and have continued to do so for the past 4 years. If you haven’t checked them out - you should. Their new episodes this week, include: Of course… Woodrow Wilson’s Fourteen Points. It’s a really worthy subject!! And - POWs in Japan And finally - Life on the Isonzo Front To see their videos about WWI Follow the link in the podcast notes or search for “the great war” on youtube. Link: https://www.youtube.com/user/TheGreatWar World War One NOW It is time to fast forward into the present with WW1 Centennial News NOW - [SOUND EFFECT] this section is not about history, but rather - it explores what is happening NOW to commemorate the centennial of the War that changed the world! Commission News/Coin In commission news this week: We have an awesome numismatic opportunity for you!!! WHAAA!? Whadhee say!? According to Merriam Webster, Numismatics is “ the study or act of collecting of coins, paper money, and medals.” Numismatic coins are essentially rare or valuable coins that have an external value above and beyond the base value of the precious metal they are made out of. And this week - by an act of congress - The U.S. Mint released a new 2018 World War I Centennial Silver Dollar - that honors the 4.7 million American men and women who served in uniform and the 116,516 who lost their lives in the war that changed the world. But they went even further and created limited edition coin and service medal collectors sets - one each for the Army, the Navy, the Marines, the Air Service and the Coast Guard - These limited edition special service sets are only available for a short time - Its a once-in-a-lifetimer collectors opportunity. Now personally - I’ve ordered two of the Commemorative coin and Air Service sets showing this beautiful engraving of a SPAD XIII biplane. I bought the second set for my 2 year old grandson --- because around 12 years from now, he is going to wonder about these coins and medals his grand dad bought him back in 2018 - and my son can tell him all about his GREAT GREAT Grandfather who flew bi-planes that looked like that - over in europe during WWI. These awesome combo sets are only available for 1 month! So grab your piece of history right now by going to ww1cc.org/coin /C O I N or by following the link in the podcast notes. Best of all - by law, part of the proceeds from the sale of each coin go to the memorial - so with every coin or set you buy, you are helping build America’s WWI Memorial in Washington DC. Don’t wait - orders yours today at ww1cc.org/coin - and thank you! link:www.ww1cc.org/Coin https://catalog.usmint.gov/coins/commemoratives/ A century in the making - America’s WW1 Memorial in Washington DC Speaking of the memorial - it’s time for our new segment - A century in the making - America’s WWI Memorial in Washington DC. Last week we introduced you to the segment --- and Sabin Howard told you how he met Richard Taylor from New Zealand’s WETA workshop. This week we learn how he is blending his traditional sculpting techniques with WETA’s high tech 3D tools to create the 9 foot maquette of the memorial sculpture: [Sabin Howard Interview] We are going to continue to bring you an insider’s view with stories about the epic undertaking to create America’s WWI memorial in our nation’s capital. Yea…. An onomatopoeia is a word that imitates the sound something makes - like buzz or Meow or boom…. So After a large meal, or maybe at the end of a long, hard week at work -- don’t you just love to crash on the couch and conk out? Well - people aren’t the only things that can conk out -- World War One airplane engines did too - and the word describes the sound the engines made when then flooded out, or seized up - Conk - Conk - Conk - Having a machine “conk out” midair was unfortunately - not uncommon. The term first appears around 1911 in British Motorcycling Magazines, describing the problems early motorcyclists faced going uphill; Specific advice given in the magazine is to “give a bit more throttle ...when the engine starts to "conk, conk, conk,” The phrase made its way into common use during WWI, and soon was applied to exhausted individuals as well. Conk Out - this week’s speaking WWI phrase - See the podcast notes to learn more! link: https://english.stackexchange.com/questions/100097/what-is-the-origin-of-the-word-conk [SOUND EFFECT] Remembering Veterans Interview with Eagle Scout Benjamin Wood-dard In our Remembering Veterans section -- This week we’re joined by an amazing young man…. For years, Erik Burro would pass the statue of a WWI U.S. soldier on his commute just a few blocks from his city home and office --- but he paid it little attention to it. In 2016 - the centennial of WWI made him stop and take a closer look at the statue depicting a Doughboy, and the memorial hall behind it. This led Erik on a mission to find and photograph other World War I monuments, first in South Jersey and then statewide, a quest that has resulted in traveling photography exhibits of major WWI monuments in the state. Read more about Erik Burro and his "Legacy of Remembrance" at the link in the podcast notes. The carrier pigeons of both the Allied and Central Powers assisted their respective commanders with an accuracy and clarity unmatched by technology. The National Archives has a vast collection of messages that these feathered fighters delivered for American soldiers. Using these messages and the history of the carrier pigeon in battle, we can look at what hardship these fearless fowls endured and how their actions saved American lives. One of the most impressive things about the war records of the carrier pigeons was how widely the birds were used. Their service as battlefield messengers is their most known use, and the pigeons found homes in every branch of service. Read more about these essential feathered flying communicators by following the link in the podcast notes. Short Film: The Hun We picked up on a short-film that was shared by The Great War channel on Facebook. The film comes from Tyler Mendelson, a young filmmaker and Marine Corps veteran. The twelve minute short tells the story of a young American soldier who has just become his company’s new message runner as a German attack is imminent. You can watch the short by following the link in the podcast notes. link:https://vimeo.com/249587230 Tanks tanks tanks Last week in our Speaking WW1 segment we looked at the origin of the word “tank”. We happened to find, and share, a cool webpage on Facebook last week that lays out weird and interesting tank designs from Leonardo Da Vinci to the modern day. Among our favorites are the pre-wwi “Tsar”-- a rolling turret with wheels five times the size of a man; the “rolling ball tank”; and the submarine land dreadnought, an aircraft carrier sized ship, covered with cannons, rolling over land. Check them out at the link in the notes. link:http://www.twilighthistories.com/2012/08/17/top-20-weird-tanks-alternate-history-of-design/ Coin Drop Game Last for the week-- the US Mint released a special game for kids in coordination with the release of the WW1 Commemorative Silver Dollar. It’s called Peter The Eagles Coin Drop and the premise is simple: you fly a plane, piloted by an Eagle, and maneuver to drop “liberty loans” onto trenches, field hospitals and banks. But watch out-- seagulls appear and can block your drop, or run into your plane! Follow the link in the notes to play-- or to share with your kids. link:https://www.usmint.gov/learn/kids/games/coin-drop And that’s it this week for the Buzz! Full Radio Show: Steve Ledson, AmaWaterways Wine River Cruise Host & Head of Lebson Winery, Sonoma: In a rather interesting interview Paul Lasley encounters an AmaWaterways Wine River Cruise host who happens to have a family history going back over 150 years in the Sonoma Valley in Northern California. Steve Ledson, a fifth generation winemaker, tells fantastic stories about his Great Great Grandfather who was making wine in the 1860s and scores of relatives along the way who farmed produce or made in the Valley for generations. The famous Ledson 16,000 square foot Gothic/Normandy style edifice Castle Hotel is a landmark in the area and Steve Ledson has refurbished a number of old buildings in Santa Rose, such as the art deco Rosenberg department store building that houses a Barnes & Noble and Ledson's executive offices. Ledson hosted an AmaWaterways Luxury Wine River Cruise from Paris to Barcelona on the Rhone River, called Provence & Spain, and enjoyed it so much he is booking another one as wine host with the full intention of filling the whole ship with his followers. On the cruise in November 2014 there were 40 people who were booked by AmaWaterways and most all of them came away from the cruise as fans and consumers of Ledson wines. About Ledson Family: Our family winery is located in the heart of Sonoma Valley, a short one hour drive north of San Francisco. Ledson Staircase Emerging like a gothic blast from the past out of acres of rolling vineyards and pastoral calm, our 16,000 square foot French Normandy winery is known as "The Castle" around the world. Originally designed as our family home, the contractor and designer in me got carried away and it quickly became clear that the architectural showpiece was much better suited to house our planned winery. We specialize in small varietal lots that reflect the genuine diversity of our select vineyards and appellations. Ledson wines are sold exclusively at the winery in Kenwood, in our online store, and at the Ledson Hotel in Sonoma. We have developed a number of different wine club programs, offering members preferred pricing and access to wines not available to the public. With over 70 wines to choose from, there is something for everyone. Boasting beautifully appointed hand-crafted tasting bars, impeccable grounds with picnic areas shadowed by 100-year old majestic oak trees, a fully stocked gourmet market as well as a tasteful clothing and gift boutique--the Ledson Winery is the breathtaking backdrop for an afternoon picnic or a weekend getaway.

The Genealogy Gems Podcast with Lisa Louise Cooke - Your Family History Show
In this episode I've got another blast from the past for you. We have reached deep into the podcast archive and retrieved episodes 5 and 6. In Episode 5 we touch on using the video website YouTube for genealogy, and then I walk you through how to Bring Sites Back From the Dead with Google. Then we wrap things up with a cool little way to Spice Up Your Genealogy Database. In episode 6 I have a gem for you called Cast a Shadow on Your Ancestors, and we cover the free genealogy website US GenWeb Episode: # 05 Original Publish Date: March 25, 2007 MAILBOX Email this week from Mike O'Laughlin of the : “Congratulations on your podcast! You may be able to find it in the Cache version. Google takes a snapshot of each page it examines and caches (stores) that version as a back-up. It's what Google uses to judge if a page is a good match for your query. In the case of a website that no longer exists, the cache copy us a snapshot of the website when it was still active hidden away or cached. Practically every search result includes a Cached link. Clicking on that link takes you to the Google cached version of that web page, instead of the current version of the page. This is useful if the original page is unavailable because of: 1. Internet congestion 2. A down, overloaded, or just slow website - Since Google's servers are typically faster than many web servers, you can often access a page's cached version faster than the page itself. 3. The owner's recently removing the page from the Web Sometimes you can even access the cached version from a site that otherwise require registration or a subscription. If Google returns a link to a page that appears to have little to do with your query, or if you can't find the information you're seeking on the current version of the page, take a look at the cached version. Hit the Back button and look for a link to a "cached" copy at the end of the URL at the end of the search result. Clicking on the "cached" link should bring up a copy of the page as it appeared at the time that Google indexed that page, with your search terms highlighted in yellow. If you don't see a cached link, it may have been omitted because the owners of the site have requested that Google remove the cached version or not cache their content. Also, any sites Google hasn't indexed won't have a cache version. Limit: If the original page contains more than 101 kilobytes of text, the cached version of the page will consist of the first 101 Kbytes (120 Kbytes for pdf files). Really looking for an oldie but a goody? Try the It allows you to browse through 85 billion web pages archived from 1996 to a few months ago. GEM: Spice up your database Search Google Images, then Right click and save to your hard drive. Use Silhouettes Find something that represents what you do know about that person. It really does help you see them more as a person and less as an entry in your database – their occupation, a reader, a sport, etc. Episode: # 06 Original Publish Date: April 1, 2007 You can learn more about Jewish roots at the 350 Years of American Jewish History website , The Home of Jewish Genealogy GEM: Cast a Shadow on Your Ancestors In the episode #5 I shared a little gem that would spice up your genealogical database – adding silhouettes and artistic images to the file of an ancestor when you don't have a photograph. Probably the most famous silhouette these days are the silhouettes used by Apple for advertising the iPod digital music and audio player. It may surprise your teenager or grandchild to learn that the first silhouettes were done hundreds of years ago. Back then silhouettes (or shades as they were called), they paintings or drawings of a person's shadow. They were popular amongst English royalty and the art form quickly spread to Europe. A silhouette can also be cut from black paper, and was a simple alternative for people who could not afford other forms of portraiture, which, in the eighteenth century, was still an expensive proposition. The word took its name from Étienne de Silhouette, but it's uncertain as to whether his name was attributed because he enjoyed this art form, or as the story goes because the victims of his taxes complained that they were reduced to mere shadows. Either way, the popularity of Silhouettes hit new heights in the United States where they were seen in magazines, brochures and other printed material. But they faded from popularity as Photographs took over in the 1900s. As a follow up, I want to share with you a simple technique for creating your own silhouettes. You can use ordinary snapshots to create a visual family record. Take a photo of a person in profile against a neutral background. Blanket the photo background with white acrylic or tempera paint Fill in the image with a heavy black permanent marker, curing the shoulders down for a classical pose. Add fun details like cowlicks, eyelashes, hats, and jewelry that express the person's personality with a fine felt-tip pen. Photocopy the doctored photos onto quality art paper. Since glossy papers work print best, you could also use your computer scanner to scan the image into your hard drive. From there you can add it to your database, or print it out onto glossy photo paper for mounting. To represent folks in your family tree, create a silhouette of your father to represent his Great Great Grandfather, and add a farmer's hat and rake to represent his profession of farming. Chances are dad has inherited some of his profile anyway. Have fun with it and be creative. But of course be very sure to label to silhouette appropriately as a creative interpretation rather than a literal rendering. You can also do silhouettes of your family including extended family and arrange the portraits together on a wall. Use black painted frames in a variety of shapes and sizes and hang in a way that represents the family tree / relationships. Check out the Art Café Network website for a by Katherine Courtney. For More detailed how-to information, they have 2 Silhouette books to turn to: by Kathryn K. Flocken GEM: GenWeb Pages Last year the website celebrated its 10th Anniversary. The USGenWeb Project consists of a group of volunteers working together to provide Internet websites for genealogical research in every county and every state of the United States. The Project is non-commercial and fully committed to free access for everyone. Organization within the website is by state and county. You can go to the homepage of the website and click on the state of your choice from the left hand column. From the state page you can select the county you wish to search in. However, when I know they name of the county I want to search in, I've found it's often quicker just to search at google.com and do a search like “genweb sibley county mn” The choice is yours. Remember to use the Google search gem that I gave you in episode one (see episode #134 ) to quickly search within the county website. Many don't have search engines of their own, and so that's when I first really started using that search technique. These county sites are often very rich though, and after a focused search, it's rewarding just to wander the site. It will help you become more familiar with the county! You'll likely find databases of Births, Deaths, Marriages, townships histories, plat maps, surnames, and a host of other topics. Because each county has its own volunteer coordinator, the information you will find varies from county to county.
