Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell share a jam-packed episode of shocking revelations in several ongoing cases. We'll start with developments in the Houston, TX prosecution of (2:47) Lee Gilley from his "Closed-Door" hearing on Tuesday and then move to (11:41) Angie Solomon's simultaneous 'Live-Broadcast-Against-Judge's-Orders' Probable Cause / Preliminary hearing in Franklin, Tennessee. Before Angie's arrest earlier this month, she had vocally accused her ex-husband, former TV news anchor Aaron Solomon, of killing their 18-year-old son, Grant, in 2020, and sexually abusing their daughter, Gracie, who is now 18. On Tuesday, the undercover officer who posed as a hitman for hire played a recording for the court in which Angie — the mother of Grant and Gracie Solomon — can be heard trying to negotiate for her Aaron's killing … on a credit plan. ..? Also on today's episode, (28:00) Part Two of the Weldon Boyd Calls and what former Horry County Police Deputy Chief Brandon Strickland AND recently-fired HCPD Officer Damon Vescovi did in the aftermath of Scott Spivey's killing. Let's dive in...
For years, investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell have wondered how the conversations go when Good Ole Boy police officers try to help keep their friends out of trouble. And for years, the Good Ole Boys have told them that there's nothing to see here. That these conversations never take place and if you think they do then that's your misinterpretation of it. But then a North Carolina woman named Jennifer Spivey Foley hired attorney Mark Tinsley in the pursuit of a justice she KNEW her brother, Scott Spivey, was robbed of after he was killed on a rural side road in Horry County, South Carolina — the same county that would turn its back on Mica Francis less than four months later. Is this another Alex Murdaugh-style scandal in the making? Why did powerful figures risk their careers for Weldon Boyd, a businessman not even originally from Horry County? Tune in to this explosive episode and demand accountability! The truth is coming to light, one phone call at a time… Let's dive in...
Brooke and Tyler are joined by long-time Cosmere contributor and Arcanist Jofwu to discuss cognitive shadows' origins and complexities. Perhaps the fandom's most debated and speculated-upon question is "What are cognitive shadows and how do they work?" On a new Wild For Change podcast, we speak with Brooks Bonner, Program Director of the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation. E.O. Wilson, was an American biologist, naturalist, ecologist, entomologist, and the author of many books, including Half-Earth. The premise of Half-Earth proposes that to save the planet, half of the Earth's lands and seas need to be preserved and protected. In this podcast, Brooks discusses the significance of preserving half of the Earth's lands and seas, the essential role that other species play in our lives, and why safeguarding diverse ecosystems is crucial for the survival of every form of life on our planet. Brooks will also shed light on the Half-Earth Project and Interactive Map, which acts as a guiding tool for identifying and protecting areas rich in biodiversity. Additionally, he will share some valuable insights on how we can support our local native species and contribute to protecting our planet's biodiversity. To learn more about the Half-Earth Project and view the Interactive Map, go to https://eowilsonfoundation.org/which-half/national-report-cards/half-earth-project-map/“Unless humanity learns a great deal more about global biodiversity and moves quickly to protect it, we will soon lose most of the species composing life on Earth. The Half-Earth proposal offers a first, emergency solution commensurate with the magnitude of the problem: I am convinced that only setting aside half the planet in reserve, or more, can we save the living part of the environment and achieve the stabilization required for our own survival.” E.O. Wilson “Every species on Earth depends on other species for its survival. But we continue to yank at these threads of incredible ecosystems, unraveling our own support systems.” Brooks Bonner Website: http://www.wildforchange.com Twitter: @WildForChange Facebook: /wildforchange Instagram: wildforchange

We have three special guests this time and a jam packed episode all about stormwater management! We talk extensively with Mark Rufener (PE, CPESC, CPSWQ) from K.E. McCartney & Associates (a local engineering firm) regarding "The Gateway Project", Kingwood Center Garden's capital plan to create a new garden entrance and visitor experience, completed in the last few years. As part of this plan, Kingwood integrated several stormwater BMPs (Best Management Practices) into the new visitor center and parking lot. Mark Rufener is a professional in stormwater infrastructure engineering and management and played a large part in the design of these BMPs. He also worked closely with another Mark (Hoover) who is Kingwood's lead horticulturalist (translating as "plant wizard"). Mark Hoover was in charge of selecting the plant material to be used in some of the BMPs, because as you'll discover, plants play a critical role in stormwater management. Additionally, Evan caught up with Dan Herrold who is another technician at Richland SWCD. Dan heads up the MS4 program there, which ties into what we talk about in the rest of the episode. Jared, Oriana and Ned talk about Ned's choice of topic: cartography. To say that maps help define Middle-earth is to understate; besides the famous map featured in The Hobbit and also given as a key visual element with the book itself, one of two Tolkien drew for it, his own many other maps of Middle-earth he created over time, finalized for publication by Christopher Tolkien both before and after his father's death, establish a visual sense of what Middle-earth ‘looks' like in a broad sense, to the point of spawning numerous atlases, charts and online explorations of that wider world. But then again, cartography in a modern sense is a very Eurocentric proposition, and even the fantasy fiction cartography that Tolkien's maps both drew on and then subsequently influenced in a massive way is very much a product of that wider influence, sometimes in very subtly skewed ways. How do maps function ‘in' Middle-earth themselves, whether as plot device, something referenced casually or even seemingly not needed at all, depending on the character? What about the historical context of the British Empire and the sense of ‘discovering' the world might have fed into Tolkien's own views about how to create his own maps and charts, as much as his own knowledge of medieval manuscripts and maps in turn? How have the various visual interpretations of Middle-earth in other media used maps in turn in their efforts and to what purpose? And how is the long shadow of Middle-earth's maps and their impact being interrogated by creative artists around the world as newer worlds are envisioned and explored? (And yes…we have some initial thoughts on a certain streaming TV series.)SHOW NOTES.Jared's doodle. We cover the Middle-earth globe for you. (When it became a globe.)Look we know, WE KNOW. With the potential threat of (presumably tactical) nuclear weapons being used in anger for the first time since the Second World War looming on the horizon and amidst the recent territorial annexations of the four Ukrainian regions of Kherson, Zaporizhia, Donetsk, and Luhansk via a "totally legit" (at least according to President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation and his Ukrainian political collaborators) referendum, today I provide my perspective on the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine as of early October 2022 (with the obvious caveat that things are ever-changing in terms of the approximate state of play on the ground, which will of course require further elaboration future video and podcast episodes). In particular, I delve deep into the fascinating, often overlooked historical context of how modern Russia developed its particular spiritual and political identity as well as how Moscow and its various policymakers seek to rewrite what it perceives as the historical errors that had led to the disintegration at the end of the 20th century of the Soviet Union (USSR) and the reduction of its territorial borders into what they were prior to Putin's quest to resurrect the Russian Empire and establish in the process his own place in world history as the modern version of Czar / Emperor Peter the Great. This particular segment was made on the fly and off the cuff, and covers a whole slew of miscellaneous topics that contextualize both the Byzantine nature of Russia's imperial past as well as the present juncture in which the Kremlin has taken the notion of being a besieged fortress in the face of Western opposition to the brink of a crisis with the risk of further military escalation in the form of a nuclear strike that could have grave implications for not just the ongoing conflict between Kyiv (and by extension Washington and NATO via proxy) and Moscow, but humanity as a collective species. So, we've reached the final chapter of our land series. An exploration that has taken us on a journey from movement on land, to belonging to land, to healing from land. And we're ending by daring to dream big! By pushing the boundaries of what our current society offers us, we're investigating what our world would look like if everyone in it had access to enough. By rejecting notions like exclusivity, division, conflict and suffering, we're proposing that Earth is an abundant land that can, and should, be shared. To do this, we reimagine ownership, challenge capitalism (as always) and even get a bit spiritual! With help from Guests Rachel Solnick from Miknaf Ha'aretz and Beth Stratford from London Renters Union, who together strike a beautiful balance between the ideological, the creative and the practical solutions we need. ---------- Learn - what is abundance? There are hopes a new online tool will not only help address crime in Wellington but its causes.Wellington City Council has launched an interactive map, where residents can pinpoint areas they've experienced or witnessed harm or felt unsafe. The map also records graffiti and dark places. City Councillor Tamatha Paul told Nick Mills the data will help to pick up trends and patterns where people feel unsafe so that the Council can take steps to improve the city. But she says the reporting will be "helpful as long as it's met with action" and takes more than beefing up police presence in those trouble-spotsShe says that's just a band-aid solution and they need to address the root causes of crime.
China has pledged to be carbon neutral by 2060 -- and its citizens are helping industries across the country reach that goal. Environmentalist Ma Jun introduces the Blue Map, an app that empowers people to report pollution violations in their communities and track real-time environmental data, holding emitters accountable and helping companies along the global supply chain make informed sourcing decisions. Hear how the app uses the power of transparency to motivate more than 14,000 factories (so far) to clean up.

New CWD Field Test For those who don't know, CWD stands for Chronic Wasting Disease. The animals affected by this disease include deer, elk, and moose. This disease is spread through direct and indirect transmission. Direct transmission is when the animals are together and are in direct contact with each other. However, indirect is when an animal transmits the disease through the silva, urine, or other bodily materials that an infected animal has left behind in the environment. This disease is fatal 100% of the time but can take 2-3 years to fully waste the animal. Commonly, animals with CWD appear sickly and confused. Yet, this disease is found in seemly healthy animals as well. As a result of the lengthy period from infection to death, it can be hard to track animal exposure. This is why testing can be one of our best and only defenses against this disease. The Importance of Testing Currently CWD has been found in 26 states across the Untied States and is spreading fast. By testing the deer we can determine the prevalence in certain areas. This helps the state and national wildlife departments make important CWD management decisions. Another positive about testing is that you can make an informed decision on whether or not to eat your harvested venison. At this point, it is not recommended to eat venison that has tested positive for CWD. The current testing process can be complicated and lengthy. In some cases it can take two or more weeks to get results. However, researchers are working hard for a solution to this problem. The MN PRO team working with the novel test for chronic wasting disease (CWD). Progress Towards a CWD Field Test for Hunters On this episode of the Modern Carnivore Podcast Mark talks with Marc Schwabenlander and Tiffany Wolf from the University of Minnesota. Marc is the chronic wasting disease research program and outreach manager at MNPRO. Tiffany is an assistant professor in the Department of Veterinary Population Medicine at the College of Veterinary Medicine and co-director of MNPRO. They are two of the great minds that have created this exciting new innovation for the world of conservation. The goal of this project is to create a faster cost-effective test for CWD. While this is only the first step in what has promise as a game-changer with CWD, it's extremely positive news. Listen in to this episode to find out more about CWD and this innovative new testing method.
