In a special episode, Nikki & Brie sit down with some of the standouts from season three of The Traitors, Chrishell Stause, Wells Adams, and Sam Asghari, to hear more about the drama, intrigue, and thrills that happened in and out of the castle! Brie hosts the conversation, and things kick off with Chrishell sharing a special message to Nikki after the way things ended between them in the castle, Sam reveals which cast member's demeanor bothered him, Wells is still confused why he had to leave The Traitors so early, and Nikki has specific ideas about the perceptions that some people on the cast projected on the rest of the cast. Names were a big issue for some of the cast, getting the right at the round tables, in interviews, and even at the reunion. Wells went to extreme lengths to get everyone's names correctly, even if they didn't get his right. Chrishell, Wells, Sam, and Nikki talk about their personal growth, their icks, some messy gameplay by the Traitors, and everyone's adoration of the Bambis. They break out the chalkboards one last time to cover Gabby Windey's wedding, who the best dressed on the show was, who was flirty on the show, who from the cat might join OnlyFans, the most dramatic, and their picks for who would be their emergency contact. Brie then puts everyone in the hot seat for a fast round of Would You Banish that sees Chrishell, Wells, Sam, and Nikki talking about backstabbing in the castle, sex do's and don'ts, body counts, food etiquette, exes, and much more. Wells also talks about getting behind the bar for the next season of Bachelor in Paradise. Chrishell is up to something big after season 9 of Selling Sunset, and Sam has some great movie roles lined up in his future, which he's excited about. The episode ends with Chrishell, Wells, Sam, and Nikki giving their Traitors-themed Inspiration & Affirmation and getting the last word on The Traitors season three! Follow Chrishell on Instagram Follow Wells on Instagram Follow Sam on Instagram  Call Nikki & Brie at 833-GARCIA2 and leave a voicemail! Hey guys and welcome back to the podcast!Today, we have on Dolores Catania from The Real Housewives of New Jersey as well as this season of The Traitors on Peacock! This is my last interview from the Traitors Press day in NYC last month, so check out all the interviews on my page and stay tuned for more virtually with other cast members! Dolores is a staple in #rhonj and she shares here how she brought Jersey to the castle and when she still thinks a RHONJ reunion or dinner party is more intense than a Traitors roundtable. Dolores is here to spill all the tea from the castle. She talks about her friendships with Bob Harper and Dylan Efron. And why she thinks the housewives were such a target early on. Dolores gives all the BTS into what went down in that castle and teases whats to come. We also play a game with which of her RHONJ castmates does she think would make a good Traitor or Faithful. Dolores also shares why she stepped off the boat in that first challenge, and if that is truly what put a target on the housewives.Follow Dolores:https://www.instagram.com/dolorescatania/Connect with me on social:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/zacharyrealityTiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@zacharyrealityTwitter: https://twitter.com/zacharyrealityYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@ZacharyReality#rhonj #dolorescatania #traitors #realhousewives

Spoiler Alert! If you're not caught up on season 3 of The Traitors, then you'll want to watch episode 5 as soon as possible!  Okay, if you are all caught up, then you KNOW! Today, Nikki is going to talk ALL about her time in the castle, alliances, puzzles, conspiracies, and that epic Roundtable! First, Nikki admits that being away from Matteo was very hard, and she found support from Dolores and Britney when it came to being away from their kids for the show.  And Nikki's getting filled in on what the other cast members were saying and how much garbage Bob the Drag Queen was feeding her. It's a lot more confusing in the moment when you're dealing with strategy, overreactions, and Traitor hunting! Nikki also explains what was going on with her during the riddle challenge and why she wasn't aggressive smashing urns to play for the shield. It might be a first for both Nikki and The Traitors! Brie also asks Nikki about Boston Rob's strategy, manipulation, and how confusion can quickly escalate during a Roundtable. Nikki also has some questions about the tactics of The Traitors and how their lack of alignment created a messy situation for The Faithful.  Nikki also opens up about Gabby and Chrishell, the other Bambis, voting for her banishment from the castle and what she'd like to see happen next season of the show.  The episode closes out with Nikki's classic choice for Inspiration & Affirmation and a little commentary on her monumental exit from The Traitors.  Call Nikki & Brie at 833-GARCIA2 and leave a voicemail! What's up Bros? Its TRAITORS TIME and we've been waiting for this one. First things first, yes, we did it, we changed our name, but we will forever be your BravBros and BravBros 4 life. Now back to business. We get introduced to our cast, and its a very solid list. 4 housewives, a Sandoval, a mysogynist royal, Survivor, Big Brother, Ru Paul, this cast has it all. There are already some tensions in the crew from previous beefs on their respective shows. Danielle has it in for Brittany, Carolyne has an issue with Tony, and it appears that some peoples reputations precede themselves... Our first challenge is anyone can sacrifice a current castmember and swap them with Boston Rob of Survivor lore. Nobody takes the deal thus exiling Rob. The cast gets settled in with one another and the traitors are selected. We have our first event at the row challenge and all four housewives sacrifice themselves. Ivar makes it very apparent that he thinks the women of the group are incapable of a physical challenge, but DQ Bob speaks up and calls it out. But it does create an interesting dynamic in the group which is something this show does so well. 6 of the 8 sacrificed during the first challenge are up for elimination. Those that remained on the boat have immunity thus leaving 4 housewives, Bob Harper and Sam, Brittney Spears ex husband. The traitors convene at the end to select someone to murder and Alan Cummings heads to the woods to reveal a twist in the game... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Bob Harper talks coronary health - Jane's guest today is Bob Harper, one of the most successful lifestyle experts in the world, with numerous New York Times best sellers on health and fitness to his credit. But even given his incredible fitness level, that we all saw in the sixteen seasons that he was a star trainer on the hit show, The Biggest Loser, he suffered a nearly fatal (but for the CPR skill of an adjacent exerciser!) coronary episode that forever changed his life. On this segment, Bob speaks openly with Jane about how his road to recovery has evolved over the years since his heart attack, and what it looks like today. To that end, he will discuss what constitutes a healthy lifestyle, including advice for eating right and having heart healthy workouts, such as his personal favorite, hot yoga, which he now even teaches. Bob will also discuss his involvement with Survivors Have Heart, a national movement that uses the power of patient stories to engage heart attack survivors and their loved ones, while supporting those who may be at risk of another episode and why he launched the Survivors Have Heart Community (a national network of heart attack survivors and loved ones) over five years ago. All in all, Bob's inspirational story will educate and inspire others to become Better Than Before.

Tune in now!   [01:03] So without further ado, I will tell you a little bit about Dr. Beverly Yates, and then we will started, she's done a lot of stuff ladies. So her bio is very substantial. So here we go. Dr. Beverly Yates, naturopathic doctors, a diabetes expert, an author who has over 28 years of experience of working with those who struggle with blood sugar issues related to type two diabetes and pre-diabetes and feel like nothing works for them.   [02:03] Dr. Yates creates breakthrough changes in the habits that cause blood sugar issues. This allows her clients to finally get off of the blood sugar roller coaster, have more energy and create the level of health that lets them live the life of their dreams. She is the creator of the Ys protocol, a simple and effective lifestyle - based program for people who have type two diabetes or pre-diabetes to lower blood sugar levels, achieve healthy A1C and fasting blood sugar levels and have more energy to live life the way they want to. She's worked with thousands of people, helping them to lower their blood sugar levels to a healthy range and get control over their health.   [03:29] Yep. The summer is at the end of July. That's right.   [03: 31] End of July that you don't want to miss. She was chosen as the lead doctor for a new three - doctor panel TV show on ABC CT. And they did not green light the series, but I know another TV show is in your future. Dr. Bev Dr. Ye has been featured in the media, including ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS NPR, black news channel Fox series, XM, MINDBODY green essence magazine, good housekeeping woman, world readers, digest, Rodale press, and more welcome doctor advocate.   [04:05] Wow. What a lovely intro. Thank you so much, Dr. Karen, for your invitation to be a part of here with your group and also to, you know, explore a topic that is just, it really just needs to be on everyone's mind, frankly. There's other, um, illnesses that people are far more aware of, and they don't know, understand that heart disease is still far away.   [04:28] Yeah. Particularly in women and you find all kinds of information about other issues, you know? And when I ask myself why that is, this is what I think. Tell me what you think that people really think, oh, my doctor's got that covered. I don't need to worry about that. I don't need to look for that on social media. Yeah. And it's also silent, and you know, I've diagnosed so many women probably like you have, you know, coronary artery blockage from a coronary calcium scan. So can you talk a little about that a little bit more?    [05:18] Yeah. That's a great intro. Let's take back the covers here and have a heart disease is one of those silent processes whereby the time it's clear and someone's symptomatic. The process has been in place for years, if not decades, right? Just like diabetes. It tends to sneak up on people. And unless they have clear testing, clear assessment, you know, some kind of a, a rational testing process, diagnostic imaging, looking at blood markers, et cetera.    [06:02] A lot of people have this misperception and I really want to make this point clear for women, men, anyone people has this misperception that if you lead a healthy lifestyle, you will avoid problems. It's not true. It's not that simple. Don't we wish. And if you have a genetic risk from your family, if you have a lifestyle or a past set of chronic stresses or traumas, they can all set you up for heart disease that could potentially be lethal.    [06:50] There's some good news to be had around this too, especially for women. But meanwhile, we all have to do what we can. And I think one of the reasons we don't have about this is that selling you the solution after the problem for really expensive heart surgery, to have your chest cracked open and have your heart re plummed and other things like that is just worth so much more money than the things that you could do well before that's ever needed. It will never ever have that huge expense.   [07:36] But when I started on this path and I learned about some options that aren't standard of care, like coronary calcium scanning, I started sending all my at-risk women for it. And I literally would have some women, they would call from the center and say, she, you know, almost had a complete blockage in all three arteries. And we would send her to the ER, and she ended out with a stent or a bypass. Right. And her life was saved, but it's not even recognized in mainstream medicine. So because it's this silent killer and women don't even know how they can protect themselves?   [08:37] Yeah. That's a great question. You know, even today in 2022, it is not necessarily the standard of care that insurance companies will pay for a coronary calcium scan. Right? And any, depending on where you live, that scan could cost you somewhere between $75 to $300. And for some people it can be lifesaving. If it determines that there's a blockage, you know, off to the cath lab, you go, or maybe it's time to have your chest cracked, but at least it was before you had that coronary failure, that myocardial infarction a heart attack that can drop you like a rock and potentially kill you.    [09:19] So when we go through menopause, obviously a lot of our hormone shift in change, right? As much of that conversation starts though before the time of actual menopause aging of all kinds, that conversation in your body really starts to shift somewhere between the ages of 38 to 42. And at that point somewhere between age 38 to age 42, about 1% to 4% shift per year. Now, if you are comfortable with money and finances, think about it.   [10: 07] So you wanna then start to manage and maintain and boost your aging conversation, so you can live long and live well when it comes to cardiovascular health and making sure that your heart has what it needs and the rest of your cardiovascular system. It's just so, so important to have a healthy lipid profile, to have the fractions be at a good ratio to each other and to not have issues with the blood vessels that feed the heart. Those are called the coronary vessels, coronary meaning heart vessels, right? [11:01] And you can call around and shop around. You know, when you call hospitals and outpatient centers, et cetera, probably less expensive in an outpatient center compared to hospital has much bigger overhead as you might expect, but it's worth making that call to find out. It would be lovely if we had almost like a door dash of equivalent for health. So we can just look it up on an app and know how much it will cost me.   [11:41] I really can't. And today it's so true. It couldn't be easier, right. To make this transparent. Why is it so hard? You know, I've had times like, uh, I remember once when one of my kids needed surgery for something and I called around, get an idea, what would the out-of-pocket cost be? The time they were much younger, you know, we're trying to pay for school, this other thing. And I could not get anything on anybody. And it was really crazy. I mean, I knew all the ICD codes, the CPT code, I had all the numbers. Right. All the big words and, and the people who ran through the phone were like, I have no idea. I   [12:22] I mean, but you're right. It's like shopping on canal street in New York. It's like, no prices on anything. How much is that bag? And they'll be they'll, they'll kind of size you up and go for you $375.   [12:40] You are a tourist anywhere in the world. They think you might be from the US, you know, the price went up. So yeah, I got that.   [12:46] Right. So just as a public PSA, we might save some women's lives today. Can you tell everyone what a calcium scan is and that their doctor's not going to order this for them. And you can maybe help me understand why that is. Um, that they can, like I've said people, sometimes I've seen Groupons for like $89, and you can go get it, and it can save your life.    [13:14] Yeah. So a coronary calcium scan is an imaging, a simple imaging where your body scans specifically your chest to capture your heart. And it's looking at your heart, it's looking at the chambers of the heart. And it's looking at the blood vessels that feed the heart, particularly the ones that sit right on the top surface here, the coronary arteries, right? Those are the blood vessels that are dedicated to the heart. They're going nowhere else. They're simple.    [13:55] This is why blood pressure is lower. Other things. This gives the heart a way to rest that lower blood pressure number. For instance, the diastolic numbers. Like if your blood pressure is one 20 over 80, that 80, the lower number is critical. That's your heart at rest. Again, it never really stops. So I was able to relax. You can't relax.    [14:43] That's what the compromise is about. And after a certain amount of blockage, that's usually when people become symptomatic, maybe they're short of breath for no particular reason. Any exertion at all is exhausting. They might find that they have chest pains. Yes or no. And for women, the presentation of chest pains is very different from it is for men. Frequently.    [15:26] Maybe she's got pain in her shoulder. It might be on the left side. It might not. It might be on the right side. It can be very confusing almost all the time. When women have heart attacks, they'll say, I didn't feel well. I felt profoundly unwell. That's usually the most presenting symptom. And so it's kind of easy to get that overlooked.    [16:12] It's still considered perspective or experimental or research controversial, whatever. It's not condoned in terms of conventional medicine. And as such insurance companies do not feel required to pay for it. It hasn't yet gotten to that status of being part of the standard of care. And so people will look at you often with a side eye, and they will not prescribe it or recommend it. You can go and get these things yourself.   [17:09] O C C L U S I O N occlusion in the absence of a blockage or occlusion. Right then you're good in terms of whether or not the heart is getting what it needs for blood flow. Now, can we talk about another aspect of this that usually isn't put together? Is that okay, please? Absolutely. There's stress echocardiograms. Now, from the point of view of a cardiologist, this is something I happen to agree with them on a stress echo, as it's called more, you know, familiarly, a stress echocardiogram, in my opinion, is a gold standard.   [18:03] If you are a woman with larger breast masks, this could be one of the most awkward tests you will have in your life, worse than a mammogram in some ways to be clear but worth it. Okay. All right, wait a minute. I'm just, I'll talk about it right now. fellas do not go through all this drama. So with the ultrasound head there, and you'll have 12 EKG leads all around you electrocardiogram that is recording the electrical activity of the heart. So what they're doing is they're going to have you initially walk light load, right?   [18:46] You'll see whether all the valves are flapping or not. And you also see one of the most critical, sensitive measures you can ever imagine for the function of your heart called L V E F left ventricular ejection fraction in plain language, how much blood that has now just been oxygenated from your lungs and has come back to the heart is actually going to go out of that sucker and around the rest of the body to deliver that oxygen. You don't wanna, it all stick in there. So when that ejection fraction gets lower, like significantly under 50, say it's 30%, 25%, 20%, 14%, et cetera. That's where congestive heart failure happens.    [19:43] So the stress echo you like as the gold standard for diagnosing coronary artery disease or looking for function of the heart, or what do you like that for   [19:54] The heart function is the heart functioning well, okay. Make sure it's getting blood in. And the blood is getting back out because it's not doing us any good. If the blood's going in, and it's not leaving, that's why people have these problems with clots. You see all these medications being promoted for lowering clots, blood thinners, et cetera. This is what's. This is why, right? Heart disease.    [20:15] Right? But I know there's some people listening, going, Dr. Bev, do I need to ask for a stress echo    [20:22] Think it's a great baseline test. I do, especially in your middle life years. I think it's a great baseline. And if you have a history of being an athlete, if you've been athletic, if you are a big a person who was huge on dancing, anything that was aerobics in nature, some of the more vigorous things I've seen for cheerleading, absolutely qualify as far as I'm concerned, their athletes do as well as the individual and team sports. Anything that involved running, lifting resistance or weight training. I think it's a good idea for you to get that test. Here's why you will have a natural increased growth called a hypertrophy of that left ventricle wall.   [21:38] Yes, absolutely. All right. So that's another test. Let's back up a little and talk about the risk factors. Mm-hmm for heart disease. Sure. And you mentioned earlier genetic dyslipidemias mm-hmm can you talk about what are the risk factors that really need to be addressed and mitigated, and then we'll weave that into lipids?   [22:01] Sure, sure. So risk factors. One of them is something that's affecting many people right now, as we work our way through this pandemic situ and that is sitting too much sitting throughout the day, sitting on an airplane or a bus or a train or whatever it is, right? Extended periods of sitting are a real risk factor. So that's one, another issue is a complete lack of exercise and any kind of exercise. It could be dancing to your favorite music. It doesn't mean you have to go to the gym and do some, some specific, right it's simply movement.    [22:45] Your blood lipids love that fiber, the healthier ones are more likely to be pronounced when you've got plenty of fiber on board. So green leafy vegetables are a great way to get fiber. You can have ground FLA seeds, a few nuts and seeds. Those have fiber in them, fruits, fresh fruits, absolutely other kinds of vegetables, not necessarily green ones. All of those food groups have fiber naturally in them, can take fiber as supplements.    [23:22] Smoking's another risk factor. Smoking basically sets your blood vessels on, on fire. If you will, it's a kind of inflammation and the sort of damage that smoking those blood vessels makes it far more likely that the unfriendly lipids will park in the blood vessels and turn into those Velcro balls. I talked about it. So their Velcro balls happen.   [23:51] Yes. And the sitting the smoking. And I know you're gonna talk about blood sugar and diabetes, right?   [24:01] Absolutely. Blood sugar, um, problems where blood sugar rises chronically high and doesn't come back down or the blood sugar roller coaster for people who go from super high to really low, super high, to really low experience, to hang, reach phenomenon, hungry and angry who have first too much blood sugar. And then not enough, it just plummets like a rock off a cliff. This is a problem, right? It's another risk factor.   [24:34] That blood sugar wants to hang onto the proteins in your blood. The proteins belong there, but too much blood sugar does not. And you have extra blood sugar. It hangs on those proteins to create big old honk and molecules called protein glycan.    [24:52] Tries to get through your tiny little capillaries. Well, it doesn't fit. it's too big. And so all of your circulation starts to be compromised. So then when you have the unfriendly fractions of that, of the lipids, they see this mess and one of them joins it's a pile it just gets bigger and bigger. It's a problem.   [25:13] Yeah. So let, so the blood, sugar's a problem. Definitely gotta get that under control. Yep. And let's segue into the lipids. So let's talk about that. How does that contribute and what testing do people have? And let's dive into that.   [25:30] Lipid fractions that we care about, here are the ones that should be on most lab tests. They are HDL, which stands for high density, lip protein; there's LDL, which is low density, lip protein. Then there's V LDL, which stands for very low density like protein. There are some other fractions as well. One of them that is super helpful to know about is called lipoprotein little a right. So lipoprotein little a it's either shown as a lowercase, a or in parentheses an after the word lipoprotein, depending on the lab, the lab, company's way of doing that call out.    [26:20] Think of it as like beach balls in your blood. It's good. It's not thick into anything. It's kind of natural. Telon it's not toxic at all. In this case, it's just good for you. It doesn't cause problems and cholesterol as a large category is the building block a substrate for all the sex hormones. We actually want cholesterol in the body. What we care about is what the body is doing to the cholesterol or interacting with it. So if you have the presence of other kinds of inflammation, which we'll talk about later, this is where lipid pro profiles and fractions matter a lot.   [27:08] Same is true for V LDL, a very low density lipoprotein in the presence of inflammation. It too can be troublesome. LDL is more likely to take people out compared to V LDL triglycerides. They, too, are another fraction of lipid, and they can definitely be problematic. And it's all about inflammation. So back to where we talked about the biggest loser in one of their trainers, Bob Harper, who you know, seemed to be amazingly fit and in shape and blah, blah, blah, and still dropped like a rock from a heart attack. Well, it turned out he hadn't unfriendly cholesterol profile, a very unfriendly one. And again, if he hadn't been in a place where people saw him drop over from a heart attack, he probably would've died because he wouldn't have gotten help fast enough.   [28:11] No, I do. And I'm trying to think of the name of that famous marathon runner who also dropped dead from a heart attack. So just because you're physically, you look physically fit doesn't mean that you are. Yeah. So when people get a regular lipid profile from their doctors, they usually get what total cholesterol, LDL VDL chide and HDL, correct.    [28:39] Right. And so I also gonna say is that sufficient, and I just want to let everybody listening in the podcast know that Dr. Bev is getting ready to give a master class to the women in my midlife mastery program. And so that's who she's talking to. when she's showing, uh, look, look at my hands and stuff.   [29:09] And the course of now 30 years of, of clinical practice and growing where they'll come in, their total cholesterol number will be higher than 200. So it's considered L of or high, right. It automatically falls into the category of at risk. However, a lot of times for these women, especially in midlife and older it's because their HGL fraction has gone up the protective good gal, good girl, kind of cholesterol.    [29:50] They've been told, oh, it's high cholesterol. It's time to put you on a statin as a reflexive response, irrespective of anything else about their lifestyle. And it's not, in my opinion, in a scientific, clinically measured way to go. It doesn't make sense. If your cholesterol profile is dominant with HDL high density protein, you have an unusual amount of protection and that's good. And if you don't have inflammation, it's even better because now it is highly unlikely. You'd be is such a low risk category for a heart attack, right? You just are. Now the other way, this could go HDL is low and V LDL or more likely LDL, usually LDL and triglycerides will elevate more so than V LDL.    [30:52] And when it comes to lip profile, we care a lot because stress at the moment for a reason that you burn it off with activity, like you literally had to lift the car off a loved one, you were literal, really running from a bear for instance is okay, it's good for us. It keeps us safe. It can save lives. The problem with stress is when it's chronic, and it runs away with us, and we are trapped, we feel overwhelmed. And those chemicals surge throughout our body, whether it's cortisol, the primary stress, chemical adrenaline, some other things, right, neurotransmitters, they all get in the mix.    [31:52] And if enough of it builds up, it creates what's called those Atheros or those fattythis fatty buildup, those fatty plaques on the walls of the blood vessels. That's where the word athero sclerosis will come from where it's this process where, because the blood vessels been damaged now, the fats are trying to patch it. And the fat's really hard to sign to patch. It that's just a bad patch.    [32:26] You know, this is super important. What you just said about chronic stress. And this is what gets back to the hormones. Ladies. I always say everything leads to hormones . So by the time we hit midlife, it's usually not only our sex hormones that have a problem, but this is one of the reasons why we have what we call pathologic menopause in, in America is because our cortisol stress hormone has been struggling for years. And usually at midlife really takes a hard hit. Well, while you're having stress, this cortisol is working on your arteries and causing these micro injuries that become a hospitable place for toxic lipoproteins to, to set up shop and start blocking your arteries. So stress is not just a mental health issue. It is a physical issue.    [33:45] I'd like to leave everyone with this. Please take action. Most of these processes are silent and invisible. And by the time you start to develop symptoms, you know, you're well on the way to some serious outcomes. So being proactive, this is one of those times when you are so richly rewarded and don't let someone Buffalo you into ignoring something that's important for your health. So if you have a family history of heart disease, you really need to be particularly vigilant because you may have a genetic predisposition to it, but please understand how you live your life, your lifestyle and the environment you're in and how many tox exposed to like you live near a factory or a source of diesel fumes, et cetera, all these things accumulate and make that difference for your health. Please be proactive. Clearly if you're here, if you're listening to Dr. Kirin and the good, wonderful work she's doing the great stuff she does with the hormone club, then you're probably really dialed in and tuned in to continue to take action because the person has to live with the problem.    [35:34] Yes. So well said, I love this quote that you shared with me from Maya Angelou. We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but really admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty. I don't think I've heard that quote from her before and it's fabulous. And I think it speaks to this situation because so many women want to transform their health. And they're looking for the one thing, the one super supplement, the one diet that's gonna fix everything. And it really is a labor of love and very intensive, right?   [35:57] Yes. Thank you so much. I know you have the guide on how to improve your hemoglobin A1C and fasting blood sugar numbers and beyond for those people who are wanting to improve their blood sugar and decrease their risk for heart attack, heart disease, cardiovascular disease, including strokes. And we will have the link in the show notes. Do you wanna tell them a little bit about that?   [36:20] Yeah, sure. So in that guide, you know, I, the information there is clear and we talk about the big topics that affect it. Some of it would be things you would expect like around nutrition. All, some might be some things you may not know that some aspects of gut health, other things interact to really make that difference.    [36:59] Great. “For all my friends who are struggling to find where to get started, just do something. Just find something you love. It does not have to be CrossFit. I love CrossFit, and I would love if you loved CrossFit, too, so we could talk that language together, but just find something. Just start. Baby steps. You'll be far more successful just by taking baby steps instead of trying to do everything all at once.” - Carrie McCall   “I knew I was overweight and it wasn't healthy but I didn't know what to do about it.”  At just over 5 feet tall and over 220 pounds, Carrie McCall spent the first 25 years of her life struggling with being overweight. Carrie's childhood got off to a tumultuous start when, at just 18 months old, her mother passed away.  Then, as a young girl, her brother was diagnosed with Type-1 diabetes.  Too young to fully comprehend these illnesses, Carrie grew to be fearful and anxious of doctors and hospitals.  Says Carrie, “I lived in fear that something was going to happen to me and I was going to die early. I became fearful of going to the doctor. If I never went to the doctor, they couldn't tell me bad news. If I didn't know about a problem, I could ignore it, right?” It was at about this same age when Carrie began to notice she looked different from other kids and started getting teased for her size.  Her family was loving and encouraged her to take up physical activities, but Carrie continued to gain weight, and continued to grow more uncomfortable in her own skin.  She turned to food for comfort, and a habit of emotional eating began, fueled by her fear of dying young like her mother. Then, at age 25, Carrie had an epiphany.  She was severely overweight, on the couch watching The Biggest Loser while eating McDonald's, and she realized she had outlived her mother!  Still fearful of the medical world, she knew she needed to make a change if she was going to avoid the doctor in the future. She started her journey very simply, by walking three days per week and reducing her calories.  As she became more comfortable with exercise, she added in the elliptical, then fitness videos with light weights.  She started planning her meals and cooking more.  Slowly, the weight began to come off. A move to a new city prompted Carrie to join a globo gym where she began working with a trainer who encouraged her to lift heavier weights and introduced her to CrossFit-style workouts.  Carrie loved how strong and capable it made her feel! She's also quick to note that her progress hasn't always been linear.  While attending seminary, Carrie struggled with stress and academic pressure and her emotional eating returned, leading to re-gain some weight. Luckily, this time she had tools to help her succeed.  She remembered how much she loved CrossFit, and after finishing school she joined an affiliate.  Being surrounded by a community invested in healthy living has made all the difference as Carrie works daily to find a healthy balance. Carrie says, “My journey isn't one that paints a picture of perfection.  My weight is always fluctuating.  Some years, it is higher than I want it (or where my doctor would even like it).  There are still times where I allow stress and emotional tendencies to creep back into my coping mechanism.  However, I am so proud of the progress I have made.  I get up every morning and I move my body.  I try to plan my meals in advance especially in seasons of high stress.  Looking back to where I was 10 years ago, I can see how far I have come.  I may have lost several pounds but I have gained so much more.  I can see what was hiding behind the excess weight… a strong, sassy, and capable young lady.” Carrie has been a member of the Pursuing Health community since the beginning, and I'm so excited that she's been willing to share her story.  I think it's so inspiring and will ring true for so many people who know they need to make a change, but aren't sure how to get started. In this episode, we chat about how the loss of her mother at an early age shaped her views on health, how Carrie manages her emotional eating, and why she considers herself a professional scaled athlete. In this episode we discuss: Carrie's experiences growing up as an overweight child How Carrie approached her weight loss with a strategy of small steps What prompted her to join a gym and start working with a trainer What led Carrie to attend seminary and how the stresses that came with pursuing that path led her to regain some of her weight Her introduction to CrossFit How Carrie benefited from the community aspect of CrossFit How CrossFit has helped her ministry How Carrie forges ahead when the challenges of her work feel overwhelming Advice she would give to her 12-year old self Advice she would give to someone who knows they need to make a change, but who is struggling on where to start Three things Carrie does on a regular basis that have the biggest positive impact on her health One thing she struggles to implement that could have a big impact on her health What a healthy life looks like to Carrie You can connect with Carrie on Instagram.   Related episodes: Ep 33 - Bob Harper on CrossFit, The Biggest Loser, and Prioritizing Health Ep 48 - Jen Widerstrom: Health, Habits, and Why you are Enough   If you like this episode, please subscribe to Pursuing Health on iTunes and give it a rating. This episode wraps up the last of a three-part series that I consider my journey to wellness. Last week, I explained how I went from depressed and suicidal to fully restored with natural treatment alternatives after a 16 year journey with 9 different psychiatric medications. I explained my epiphany that as we age, there are certain biological systems that begin to decline in the body… and how my traditional medical training had not prepared me for this epiphany… because the “lock-step” mantra of traditional medicine is… “You're getting older… what do you expect… here's the latest and greatest Big Pharma treatment for you to try.” Today, in this last segment, I'm going to explore at topic that's very near and dear to my heart… that is, the topic of obesity. Now, before you tune out and quit listening because you think you don't have a weight issue, I want you to hear this… If you were to step onto the scales right now… what's going on inside your body is way more important than the number you'd be staring at. In the past few years, obesity researches have expanded their focus to include people who are… what they call… THIN ON THE OUTSIDE… FAT ON THE INSIDE. You see, there's more than one way to be obese. In the traditional sense of the term, “obesity” means you're visibly overweight. In the non-traditional sense of the term, “obesity” means you look “normal” on the outside but you are fat and fluffy on the inside. Now, I know this may be a new concept for some of my listeners out there. What do I mean by this? Let me explain. Some people fall within a “normal” weight… yet, when we look at their lean muscle mass to fat mass ratio, it's way off. According to the American Council on Exercise, those who are physically fit… not to be confused with athletes.. should fall with these ranges… Women should have about 21-24% body fat and men should have about 14-17% body fat. Now, my thoughts are that these are simply goals to shoot for. However, while you're moving toward these goals, start working aggressively on becoming thin on the inside. Here's what I mean… There are a lot of people running around with high inflammatory numbers in their bloodwork… high cholesterol numbers… really crappy diets… and very little exercise WHO APPEAR to be able to eat anything they want without gaining any weight. They appear thin by society's standards. Yet, when we literally take a microscopic look at them, they are a HOT MESS. You see the unfortunate bill of goods we've been sold is that obesity is defined by physical appearance. This is simply a social construct that has a very narrow, and often damaging, impact on your health… both emotionally and physically. It lulls people into the false sense of security that everything is A-OK if our outward appearance fits societal norms… when in fact, nothing could be further from the truth. How many times have you heard of a person, who appears physically fit, having a heart attack or dropping dead of a heart attack? Look at the Biggest Loser's TV personality Bob Harper. He ate well, exercised regularly, and had the physique of a male model, yet Bob had a heart attack in 2017. This is public knowledge… and the reason he had this heart attack was because of a genetic condition that made him fat on the inside. Because of his specific Apo-E Genotype, he had an elevation in a dangerous little cholesterol particle. This little particle is 300% more predictive of vascular event deaths than any particle we know of. Did you know that traditional medicine lipid profiles, also called cholesterol panels, don't even check for this? Did you know that 99% or more of cardiologists worldwide poo-poo the concept of even checking for this particle? And that they rationalize their lack of checking it with the statement… “We don't have anything to treat it with”? And did you know that this is medical lingo for BIG PHARMA hasn't given us a treatment? And did you know that there are TWO natural treatments that will virtually take this particle to nearly undetectable levels within about 12 weeks and in many cases… they may even reverse the plaque deposits in the arteries that have been caused by this particle? I venture a guess that you didn't know any of these things. And the reason is… there's no magic bullet treatment put out by BIG PHARMA to treat it… therefore, no one in the medical community or public gets told about it I'm telling you these things so you can be informed. I want you to make an educated decision about your health… about your wellness journey… about whether or not you're truly thin… or secretly obese. This little particle is called lipoprotein alpha… and it's one that we all need to start paying attention to… it's one that I aggressively monitor and treat in my wellness clients. There are many other examples we can talk about in relation to being defined as obese, but I want to transition to another golden goose that no one dares to talk about. In the late 1800's, Dr. John Harvey coined the phrase “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” He coined this phrase to sell his line of “health foods” to his patients. His brother, WK Harvey, was the business brains behind this concept. WK took this concept to the masses in 1908 when they incorporated as the international brand they're known as today. After nearly 60 years, their loyal customer base had become unshakable in their belief that breakfast was the most important meal of the day… Their campaign was a huge success. At that point, this corporate giant was able to add alternate sales slogans such as… “We put more into your morning” and another slogan that we all grew up hearing…“They're Grrrreat.” That's right. The inventors of Corn Flakes and Frosted Flakes convinced the world that breakfast was the most important meal of the day. The Kellogg corporation is now one of the most powerful food giants in the world marketplace… And generations of unsuspecting people have been led to belief that grains are the answer. I call this era in food history “The Grain Rush.” But the Kellogg corporation was not the only company to participate in the “grain rush of the 20 th century.” Companies like the – Martha White Corporation, – Betty Crocker, – Little Debbie, – General Mills, and – Proctor and Gamble, – All jumped on the bandwagon and grew their respective companies to corporate giant status Grain was king… and unfortunately, it still is. If you want to know more about how grains have flooded our consciousness, diet, fat cells, and waist-lines, check out the Netflix documentary, The Magic Pill. It will be one hour of your time well spent in gaining a keen understanding of why you shouldn't be eating grains and other processed foods. Now… I want to close out with this. I get asked all the time, “Brian, how did you lose all your weight?” Was it easy? Heck no!!! Did it require hard work? You better believe it did!!! Am I still a work in progress? You better believe I am!!! I've found what works for me… And there was no magic pill. Trust me on this one. Believe me, if it was a fad and out there to be found, I did it. I've done the HCG diet, where I only ate 500 calories per day & injected HCG hormone daily I've done amphetamine diet pills. I've done herbal diet pills I've done Ephedra before it was banned I've done nutrisystem I've done weight watchers I've done jenny craig I've done LA Weight Loss I've done just about every crazy fad diet ever published… like the cabbage soup diet… the egg diet… and many more I can't even remember… the list just keeps going on and on What worked for me was this… Eating clean, whole, organic foods… eliminating grains from my diet (and yes, corn is a grain and not a vegetable)… eliminating sugar from my diet.. perimeter shopping… food prep… smart exercise… drinking 4L water per day… quality sun exposure… getting the right amount of sleep every night, hormone optimization… thyroid optimization… and stress management. Researchers tell us that the average American gains 1 to 2 pounds per year. Researchers also tell us that the obese population is one of the fastest growing populations and that diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and cancer growth almost mirror the growth curve of obesity. The net result of using the techniques I've found has caused me to lose that much or more every year. Now, in the atmosphere of transparency, I can't say that every waking moment of every day in my weight loss history was perfect. There were times I gained weight back. Times where I fell off the trail horse… and had to get back on to continue my journey… And other times when I fell off the trail horse, walked into the gorge, and jumped off the cliff… only to find myself, 320 pounds later, desperately climbing back up that cliff… through that gorge… to find my trail horse patiently waiting for me to saddle up and continue my journey. But, with humble gratitude, I can honestly say, I've never gained back up to 390 pounds. Thankfully, I always came to my senses… crawled back up that click, out of that gorge… and back into the saddle. As weird as it may sound, it's those journeys… those major fowl-ups that have made me the clinician I am today. It's made me that proverbial hand over the side of the cliff that's always there to help a brother or sister back up on their feet and continuing their journey. When it comes to losing weight, I have to talk about a hot button of mine. That hot button is amphetamines. There are amphetamine clinics everywhere. They are in business because human beings are inherently lazy and want a quick fix. We live in a “microwave generation” where we expect to get results in 30 seconds or less. When it comes to sustained… and I emphasize the word “sustained” weight loss, amphetamines are dangerous. I used to do Resting Metabolic Rate testing on ever one of my weight loss clients. The clients who were coming off of amphetamines had the lowest metabolisms of any group of people I saw. Here's why. When you take amphetamines, you force your body to lose all sensation of hunger… Your body naturally goes into a catabolic state… this is where we get the word cannibalism… And, it's exactly how it sounds. When your body is being starved… It's in such dire need for protein that it will turn on it's own muscle to get it. Your metabolism is 100% linked to your ratio of lean muscle mass to fat mass. When your muscle mass declines, so does your metabolism. This is why when former amphetamine clinic patients get off of the amphetamine, they typically gain all of their weight back plus some. Our goal in obesity management is to preserve lean muscle mass NOT tear it down. I personally think it borders on malpractice to prescribe amphetamines for weight loss. BUT… it's BIG PHARMA that gives us this treatment… and when you combine this with the human nature of wanting a quick fix AND the persuasive messages of BIG PHARMA… people lose all aspects of being an independent human and become like sheep… or maybe a better way of putting is, they become “sheeple.” I urge you to not get offended. Instead, get the facts… be informed… and be aware of the hidden agendas behind certain things. Losing weight is not hard… but it does require commitment and hard work. It requires preparation… and for some, it requires tracking every single thing that goes into your mouth. Again, these are not popular messages, but they are true. You can't eat processed foods and achieve “sustainable” wellness… You might look thin on the outside, but you will still be fat on the inside. That wraps up this final episode about how I came to do what I do know. I hope you've gained some insight… and most of all, I hope I gave you some things to think about on your wellness journey.
