Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Alan Minskoff talk about Laila Lalami's dystopian novel, set in an uncomfortably near future. It's narrated by an exceptional Frankie Corzo, who voices an innocent woman incarcerated for her dreams. Much of the narrative is the protagonist Sara's thoughts, feelings, and reactions. The novel is reminiscent of Kafka and Orwell, had they lived in the Internet Age. Sara and her cohorts' mysterious plight seem frighteningly possible. This eloquently written, Earphones Award-winning audiobook lingers with the listener. The life of Michael Parenti is truly extraordinary, as he witnessed two significant cultural movements that changed the word. Growing up in Malibu, he went to school with the likes of Sean Penn and Charlie Sheen, met a young Madonna before she was an international star, hung out in Bob Dylan's house, and saw live acts like Nirvana and Red Hot Chilli Peppers long before MTV made them famous. As an internet entrepreneur, he became involved with the Bitcoin Foundation and also saw the early days of Ethereum. He attended hundreds of events, spoke with some of the people who are completely unapproachable today, and found himself in the middle of something magical, naive, and revolutionary. In this episode, we talk about the backstage politics that Michael Parenti witnessed and what it was like to believe in the cyhpherpunk dream more than a decade ago. These works delve into how the internet and digitalization shape societal structures, human behavior, and even spirituality. His newest book, Process and Event (2024), rounds off a 25-year philosophical exploration by Bard and Söderqvist and completes their "Narratology" trilogy. This book builds on previous themes, proposing that technology and spirituality are converging as humanity's search for meaning evolves, possibly birthing a new form of digital divinity. Bard and Söderqvist examine historical and cultural shifts leading to an age where AI and technology serve as humanity's next evolutionary leap, merging modern science, mysticism, and a radical rethinking of historical Western ideas.

ANGELA'S SYMPOSIUM 📖 Academic Study on Witchcraft, Paganism, esotericism, magick and the Occult
This episode offers an exploration of the life, works, and esoteric system of Franz Bardon (1909-1958), a Czech occultist who significantly influenced 20th-century Western esotericism. Bardon's seminal trilogy—"Initiation Into Hermetics" (1956), "The Practice of Magical Evocation" (1956), and "The Key to the True Quabbalah" (1957)—provides a comprehensive guide to his unique approach to Hermetic magic, which emphasizes self-mastery, elemental equilibrium, and spiritual transformation. The episode analyzes Bardon's step-by-step methodology for developing the practitioner's mental, astral, and physical faculties, as well as his innovative interpretation of the Hermetic principles of correspondence and analogy. It also examines Bardon's syncretic integration of Eastern and Western spiritual practices, such as yoga, alchemy, and Kabbalah, into a universal system adaptable to various esoteric paths. For reasons confounding to most observers, Packers Therapy is back for a 20th season. But don't be alarmed: Chris and Dave still have The Beginner's Mindset that they, Zen Masters that they are, brought to the craft in 2005. Sure, other pods have come and gone, each more professional and loaded with intriguing, useful, and accurate information. However, those developments haven't dissuaded our guys -- even after nearly two decades, Packers Therapy remains, well, the public access TV of the Internet Age. So, in that spirit, Chris and Dave talk about what they saw in the Packers 23-10 practice game win in Cleveland over the Browns. Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/packerstherapyPayPal: Packerstherapy@yahoo.comPosting its first show in 2005, Packers Therapy is the longest-running Packers podcast on the Internet. Hosts Chris and Dave began the show as a way of capturing the spirited chats the two co-workers had about the team around the office. The two have no pretense about being experts: they are just two opinionated shareholders who love the team, follow it closely, but don't always see the Packers fortunes eye to eye.The guys encourage comments and questions via their Twitter feed @PackersTherapy or email to packerstherapy@yahoo.com and read and respond to as many as they can during each show.Packers Therapy is a part of the Packers Talk family of podcasts, serving up five distinct podcasts to satisfy the most fervent of Packer fans. Variety is the spice of life, so subscribe to Packers Talk on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. You can also follow Packers Talk on Twitter and Facebook.
We did it folks! Jurors for Trump's hush money trial are getting to read their resistance tweets to his face as Meta's crackdown on news is slowly asphyxiating conservative media. Jon and Max celebrate the good news, and then dive into the much more somber topic of dating in the Internet Age. It turns out Gen Z is abandoning dating apps in favor of social media and the “old school” approach of meeting people in person. Then, Max interviews blogger Jenny Livingston about what it's like to learn you're going to live 50 more years, thanks to a new drug that's working miracles for her and many other people with cystic fibrosis.
Kara Swisher, Official Next Question plus one and dogged chronicler of the good, bad, and the ugly of the tech world (and the “adult toddlers” that so often populate it), has really seen it all. She made tech her beat at the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal before most journalists took any notice of the fledgling “nerdy” industry. From there, Kara fearlessly reported on a new generation of tech entrepreneurs who would change the world as we know it. Her journalism breaks news and starts conversations, and her bubble-bursting, down-to-earth approach to those who often get handled with kid gloves is perhaps one of her most enduring traits. Some call her approach “mean,” and the title of her much-anticipated memoir, Burn Book: A Tech Love Story, plays on this reputation as a reporter who minces no words and is not afraid to ask the hard questions. Kara chronicles the history of how tech came to dominate our lives, and with more potentially life changing tech on the horizon with things like AI, she certainly has some dire warnings. But Kara also has plenty of optimism to share, along with hot takes on everything from Gavin Newsom's suits to where she derives her confidence (and the bone she has to pick with the question “How are you so confident?”). Nothing is off limits in this funny, insightful, profound conversation. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The rise of the Internet Age allowed billions of people to access virtually endless stores of information, but it had a dark side -- one of which was the rise of a new kind of army: Groups that used viruses and software the way other militaries use missiles, spies and bombs.
