In a disaster, especially a long-term one, the family medic has to be able to handle a lot of different emergencies. Some of these are clearly survivable, such as a broken finger, and some are not, like a bullet to the brain. It’s important for the medic to have a realistic attitude towards the hard facts. Being realistic won’t make decision-making easier, but it might make it clearer. If you’re diligent in your role as medic you’ll accumulate various medicines that will help keep the family healthy and you’ll do it BEFORE the you-know-what hits the fan. We talked a little while ago about antibiotics. But you need more than just antibiotics, you’ll need a lot of different over the counter drugs, something we’ll talk about in the near future, and probably you’ll have people in your family or survival group that need medicines for high blood pressure, diabetes, and other medical problems. Dr. Joe and Nurse Amy Alton discuss the truth about expiration dates, and what role they have in choosing medications for storage purposes in times of trouble. Also, how to properly store drugs for the longest possible shelf life. All this and more on the latest Survival Medicine Podcast with Joe Alton MD and Amy Alton ARNP! Do you support Amy and Joe's mission to put a medically prepared person in every family? If you do, check out their entire line of medical kits, individual supplies, and more at store.doomandbloom.net! You'll be glad you did.

You can imagine that, off the grid, and especially on the road or in the wilderness, that all sorts of injuries will occur that break the skin and get infected. Think of all the activities you might be doing that you don’t do a lot of now. Making a lot of campfires? Chopping a lot of wood for fuel. Doing stuff you’re not used to can certainly put you at risk. Dr. Joe Alton (aka Dr. Bones) and Amy Alton ARNP (aka Nurse Amy) discusses various soft tissue infections, how to identify and treat them, and how to lance a boil if required. COVID-19 was supposed to peter out around now, but cases are peaking again, with 300,000 cases reported just on Jan. 8th. Is 2021 going to be just more of the same as 2020? With vaccines now available, can you still get the virus? Can you still give it to others? Will you still have to wear masks? Dr. Fauci says he expects some workplaces and institutions to require the vaccination, will you need to carry a COVID-Card in your wallet in the future? The Altons give their opinion (just an opinion) on what's in the future. Also, what easily available products may help you avoid a bad outcome from exposure to SARS-CoV2. Amy Alton ARNP gives her recommendation (also that of Eastern Virginia Medical School). Plus, dress warmly or you'll catch a cold? It's smart to dress for the weather appropriately, for sure, but more to prevent hypothermia than getting an infection. The Altons, aka Dr. Bones and Nurse Amy, dispel some common myths about getting colds and flus, and tell you the real reasons why winter is cold and flu season. Even if you daughter is 7 years old right now, a decade or so into an EMP strike that knocks us off the grid once and for all, she’s gonna be 17 and you might end up a grandparent in a world with power. You’ll need some equipment that will increase your chances of having a successful birth and a healthy mother afterward. This isn’t something to laugh at; during the era of the civil war, maternal deaths approached 1-2% per pregnancy. With women having an average of 10 pregnancies back then, that adds up to 10-20 percent. That’s a lot of heartbreak and tragedy when things have to running smoothly to survive.  Now, Certified Nurse Midwife Amy has put together a one-of-a kind kit that puts all the other ob kits to shame. In the Alton’s Pandemic Preparedness Guide, Dr. Joseph Alton, a Medical Doctor and Amy Alton, a Nurse-Practitioner, tell you what strategies will give you the best chance of keeping your family safe during infectious disease outbreaks. The Altons have been researching and writing about this subject for over 10 years. They discuss all you need to know about home care of the sick patient, face masks (what you need and how to reuse them) and personal protection equipment gear (how to put on and take them off safely), prevention measures called non-pharmaceutical intervention, including hand hygiene and social distancing, and even boosting your immune system to give you the best chance of preventing severe illness. You’ll learn all about various viral threats, but especially the pandemic diseases, and basics about what viruses are, the origins of viral research, the history of viral pandemics, and more. The Altons discuss, in plain English, how viruses cause respiratory diseases like pneumonia and how they cause severe consequences. They talk you through the basics of immunity, mutations, and the different viral types. Pandemics cause the existing medical infrastructure to be stretched to the limit; even the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization realize that the family caregiver, along with personal protection equipment and an effective sick room may help mild cases of viral infections more than overcrowded and understaffed hospitals. This book is meant to help you defend against viral diseases that have been, are, and will be threats against your family and community. Alton’s Pandemic Preparedness Guide is written by well-known medical preparedness advocates Joe Alton MD and Amy Alton ARNP, authors of the 2017 Book Excellence Award 1st place winner in medicine, “The Survival Medicine Handbook: …When Help is Not on the Way” and the 2020 Book Excellence Award 1st place winner in medicine “Alton’s Antibiotics and Infectious Disease, The Layman’s Guide…”. The pandemic of 2020 caused a great deal of damage, both physical and economical to just about every nation in the world. Hundreds of thousands were affected in many ways: sickness, death, financial ruin, disruption of the chain of supply, and much more. You’ll also find out about how the 2020 pandemic went from being almost unknown to the general public before 2020 to one worldwide issue for humankind. Lessons have taught us harsh lessons, and it’s clear that we are still in the initial stages of the war against all viral infectious diseases. If your concern is how to prepare for outbreaks of viral disease, Alton’s Pandemic Preparedness is the book you’ll want in your library. Dr. and Ms. Alton are both certified Advanced Wilderness Expedition Providers (AWEP) and the founders of an award-winning survival medicine and first aid educational website at Doom and Bloom. Joseph Alton MD, FACOG, FACS practiced as a board-certified Obstetrician and Pelvic Surgeon for close to 25 years before retiring to devote his efforts to preparing families medically for disaster scenarios. A Life Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and retired Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a contributor to many well-known preparedness, survival, and homesteading magazines, and a member of Mensa. Amy Alton ARNP, CNM is an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner and a Certified Nurse-Midwife. She has had years of experience working in large teaching institutions. Dr. Joe Alton and Nurse Amy Alton tell you all about it. Vitamin D is made in the body when the sun’s ultraviolet B (UVB) rays hit the skin. Vitamin D is important for many bodily function, including the absorption of calcium for bones, nerve conduction, and immune function as well. Now, it’s becoming clear that the worst COVID-19 patients seem to have more likelihood to be deficient in Vitamin D than other people. Recent studies are discussed by the Altons about whether Vitamin D makes a difference. Also, let's say you just got a blood test to see if you have had Covid-19. Many people don’t get symptoms, and so it’s possible you had it and didn’t even know, or maybe had some mild cough or GI complaints that went away after a week or so. Just back from a trip to the United Kingdom, Amy Alton ARNP and Joe Alton MD discuss some topics not recently covered in previous shows. Sleep deprivation is a serious issue: Some researchers believe that it carries health risks approaching that of cigarettes or heart disease. The mental and physical deterioration that sleep deprivation causes can break you: So much so, that it’s been used as a method of torture. The CDC estimates that up to 50-70 million Americans suffer from some kind of sleep disorder. The Altons discuss sleep disorders as an issue that can negatively affect your chances of survival in disasters, and offer some suggestions (might even help you night shift workers). Also, from time to time you'll find  the persistent notion on social media that tampons, the feminine sanitary product, are an excellent addition to your medical kit. Many, usually second- or third-hand, swear that these items saved the life of a soldier because a savvy medic made sure to carry what some call a “tactical tampon” in his pack. Dr. Bones and Nurse Amy have their own thoughts on the subject... Lastly, the Indian spice turmeric is more than just an ingredient in a decent curry: It has medicinal properties as well. Dr. Alton discusses the possible, although not fully proven, benefits of having some as part of the natural section of your medical toolshed. In times of trouble, you might have to depend on natural substances when the medicines run out. All this and more in the latest Survival Medicine Hour with Joe Alton MD and Amy Alton ARNP! #349 Occasionally, we have the honor of a mention in books that are of benefit and interest to the preparedness community. We have authors like James Wesley Rawles, Franklin Horton, A. J. Powers, Patrick Shier, and Charley Hogwood to thank for including us in some of their fiction and non-fiction. Joe Ordia of P.E.G. Solar, author of "Built To Survive: How we designed and built a sustainable, secure, and survivable custom home", has done us a similar honor, so we bring him on to talk about his journey to preparedness and his series of solar solutions for a safe and comfortable retreat for good times or bad. Also, Nurse Amy talks about recent videos and webinars on SWAT and SAM XT tourniquets, as well as the many medical uses for the trusty triangular bandages, all items you should have in multiples in your medical storage. Dr. Alton also discusses when to use staples vs. sutures for wounds in survival scenarios, plus much more! All this in the latest episode of the Survival Medicine Hour podcast with Joe Alton MD and Amy Alton ARNP! Don't forget to fill those holes in your medical supplies at store.doomandbloom.net!
