Today Heidi interviewed Amy Lloyd. Here is a little more about Amy and this episode. In Amy's words: "I graduated nursing school in 2011 and started working in the NICU. I travel nursed and ended up in Denver, CO for 7 years. I mainly worked in the NICU but worked for Nurse Family Partnership for 4 years (an amazing nationwide program for 1st time moms that qualify based on income!) I got married and moved to Asheville, NC in 2021. We got pregnant on the first try! I did the NIPT and found out we were having a boy! At my first appointment they mentioned I had a bicornuate uterus. Since hearing I had a higher rate of a breech baby I was pretty convinced he would be breech and I would have a scheduled c-section. “Normal” pregnancy. I felt really good. Worked night shift in the NICU until 39 weeks. I got COVID at 26 weeks pregnant. The recommendation then was to have a growth ultrasound. I had one at 34 weeks where they discovered the left side of his heart and aorta were small. I was referred to MFM in Asheville and then onto MFM and cardiology in Charlotte. I was induced at 39.2 at Atrium. I had a good induction…foley bulb, pitocin, epidural, AROM, pushed for 45 minutes. My baby immediately went to the NICU. His echo showed he had coarctation of the aorta and he had surgery at 3 days old! We were in the hospital for 2 weeks before coming home to Asheville. We experienced lots of feeding difficulties. He came home with a NG tube, had reflux, and a weak suck. I was basically exclusively pumping from the start. I weaned off the pump at 9.5 months postpartum. At 3 weeks postpartum I had severe abdominal pain leading me to be readmitted for IV antibiotics. They believe I had endometritis. My baby just turned 1 8/29/22. He is doing great and will continue to be followed by cardiology for life but hopefully should not need any further interventions!" 3 Key takeaways from the podcast that listeners will learn today: Flexibility Advocating for your family 3 Keywords that people would want to search when looking for content that you would provide in this episode: Congenital heart defect Epidural induction Exclusive pumping Favorite baby product or new motherhood product? Boppy for baby. I usually buy my friends a nice pair of pajamas as everyone is usually focused on stuff for the baby! Summary of guest experience – Currently live in Asheville, NC. Graduated nursing school in 2011 and have worked in the NICU as a RN ever since. Also have my CLC. Please link your contact information for me to share in the episode. Join me today as I discuss 5 Nonfiction Survival books to check out. I give a definitive one for some of the books; others are a category you need to fill. When it comes to a straight Survival Book I don't have an end-all-be-all pick. To be honest it doesn't even matter which one you buy and you will most likely get more than one anyway. I talk about a few of my favorites. Cody Lunden's books, Emergency by Neil Strauss, and a few others. All old books can probably be found in a used bookstore. My number one most recommended nonfiction survival books is Back to Basics. This one book has so much information in it. If you wanted one book to rebuild society after a collapse I would recommend this one. It has everything you need from building a house to farming to canning and much more. I talk about the great wild edibles book The Foragers Harvest by Samuel Thayer. This is an absolute must-have in my opinion. Next is The Survival Medicine Handbook: The Essential Guide for When Help is NOT on the Way by Doc Bones and Nurse Amy. If you're going to have only one medical book this should be it.
In this episode of the Survival Medicine Podcast, Dr. Joe Alton and Nurse Practitioner Amy Alton discuss the basics of mass casualty events, where the number of casualties exceeds the available resources. What do you do in these circumstances, especially in survival settings? But it's not all mass casualties, lesser issues can affect work efficiency and make things hard for a mutual assistance group after a disaster. What do you do when someone breaks a tooth? Medically prepared people also need to be dentally prepared if they're worried about a long-term event. Plus, a discussion about tonsillitis in an off-grid setting. You need to identify it fast and nip it in the bud to prevent it from becoming a major issue. All this and more in the latest Survival Medicine Podcast with Dr. Joe Alton and Nurse Amy Alton. Wishing you the best of health in good times or bad! Joe and Amy Alton

You'd have to look far and wide for someone who hasn't been stung by an insect at one point or another. It's not pleasant in any situation, but bees and wasps especially can inflict some real discomfort if you run afoul of them. In a small minority of cases, allergic reactions to the venom injected can be life-threatening, a condition known as “anaphylaxis.” Find out more about wasp and bee stings with Dr. Joe Alton in this segment. Plus, a lot bigger but, thankfully, a lot rarer, is an encounter with a shark. About 25 species are known to attack humans, some provoked, some not so much. There's a lot more people these days (more than 8 billion, and they're heading to the beach in the summer. Find out about how to prevent a shark attack, what to do if you're in the water with sharks, and what to do if you witness an attack. Also in this episode, Nurse Amy goes into specifics on how to make your own ointments, a useful skill for the off-grid pharmacist. Amy Loughren is an American reiki master and former registered nurse who is known for assisting in the arrest and prosecution of serial murderer Charlie Cullen. Before his apprehension, Cullen and Loughren were friends who both worked the night shift in the intensive care unit at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville, New Jersey. Loughren was a single mother of two children and hiding her cardiomyopathy rom her employers, with some help from Cullen, in whom she confided. In 2003, Loughren was approached by detectives who suspected Cullen of poisoning hospital patients. The patient who triggered law enforcement interest was Florian Gall. As a patient at Somerset Medical, Gall had been improving, then he suddenly died of a massive heart attack. An autopsy showed that he had been administered digoxin. It was not on his prescription list. In small doses, digoxin can improve heart function, but the amount Gall had received was lethal. After consulting with her 11-year-old daughter, Loughren agreed to assist law enforcement. Independent of the police investigation, Loughren noticed that Cullen's medical charting was irregular. It was at points muddled and hasty, and there were frequent misspellings. The hospital's tracking system also showed Loughren that Cullen spent unusual amounts of time on the files of other nurses' patients. As part of the investigation into Cullen, Loughren met with him at a diner, wearing a wire. Because she had just had a pacemaker installed, police did not want her to wear the wire, but she insisted. “The truth is I didn't know how this would affect my heart, but I knew I needed to go in there and get that confession,” she said in an interview with Vanity Fair. During Loughren's meeting with Cullen in the diner, he did not overtly admit to the murders, but he said that he would "go down fighting." The evidence from the meeting allowed police to then arrest Cullen. After he was arrested, Loughren encouraged him to make a full confession, which then supported his convictions for 29 murders.Loughren struggled with the fact that her friend was a serial murderer and with her role in apprehending him: "And he wasn't a mercy killer. He was a cold-blooded murderer. And for me to not have seen that, I really did struggle." Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/unimpressedpodcast. https://plus.acast.com/s/unimpressedpodcast.
