In this episode of The Soaring Child Podcast, host Dana Kay explores the critical role of Vitamin D in children with ADHD. Often called the Sunshine Vitamin, Vitamin D plays a significant role in brain function, neurodevelopment, dopamine production, and immune health—all essential for children with ADHD. But what happens when kids don't get enough Vitamin D? And more importantly, is supplementation always the right answer? Dana uncovers both the benefits and the potential risks of supplementing with Vitamin D, especially when Vitamin K2 is missing from the equation. As an ADHD Health Practitioner, Dana helps families implement natural strategies to support their children's health. She shares how to get Vitamin D naturally, which foods are rich in this essential nutrient, and how to choose the right supplement to avoid common pitfalls. Dr. Hoffman continues his conversation with Tambra Raye Stevenson, nutrition educator, policy advisor, food justice activist, and founder of WANDA (Women, Advancing, Dietetics and Nutrition).
More and more, the country is devolving into health inequity—between the haves and have-nots. There's also a widening gap in nutrition, with obesity and attendant medical conditions disproportionally afflicting marginalized communities. Today's guest, Tambra Rae Stevenson, is addressing these disparities. She's a healthy food advocate and policy influencer, and a self-professed nutrition warrior. Among her initiatives is WANDA—Women and Girls Advancing Nutrition Dietetics and Agriculture, an organization building a movement of women and girls of African descent to become food “sheroes” in their communities through education, advocacy, and innovation. We discuss barriers to optimal nutrition, food “deserts”, and special needs of underserved populations. There's a paucity of trained nutrition educators of color, and Stevenson is spear-heading initiatives to incentivize development of a cadre of community-based advocates for healthy diets. We discuss the importance of involving kids early, through programs like school and community gardens. Stevenson shares her personal journey exploring her African roots, discovering the benefits of centuries-old traditions of ancestral foods; she's leveraging these insights to promote culturally-appropriate healthier food choices. Initiatives like WANDA can make a huge difference in reversing the tide of preventable disease.
Nutritionist Leyla Muedin discusses the significance of vitamin D, especially during the winter months in northern regions. She explains how the lack of sunlight exposure from October to April can lead to vitamin D deficiency, which is linked to various health issues including autoimmune diseases. Leyla emphasizes the importance of vitamin D for immune function, bone health, and overall well-being. She also offers practical tips on obtaining sufficient vitamin D through supplementation and dietary sources, as well as by safely getting sunlight exposure. The episode highlights recent research on the effects of vitamin D deficiency during childhood development and its potential long-term impacts on health.

We were meant to be outside all day and with the way we live now where we are inside all the time? Most of us are vitamin D deficient. In this episode, I explained why you need to get yours

Today, I'm going to tell you about some of the symptoms that you probably didn't know were related to vitamin D deficiency. The most common signs that you're vitamin D deficient include lower back pain, depression, high blood pressure, inflammation, and autoimmune diseases. Blood tests only show you the inactive form of vitamin D and don't tell you about vitamin D at the cellular level. Instead, look out for some of the surprising signs of vitamin D deficiency. 1. Head sweating This is typically seen in infants but can also be seen in teenagers and adults. 2. Sweating more at night If you're vitamin D deficient, you may sweat excessively, even if the room is cool. You might also wake up with a moist pillow. 3. Mood swings Vitamin D controls mood regulation, so if you're deficient, you could experience a range of moods in a short time. 4. Procrastinating If you constantly put things off for later, you could be vitamin D deficient! 5. Panic attacks Low vitamin D levels can cause panic attacks, so try taking high doses of vitamin D3 if you're experiencing them. 6. Achiness Achiness in the pelvis, lower back, hips, and upper legs is often a sign of low vitamin D. 7. Loss of muscle strength If you have low vitamin D, you won't have enough calcium in the muscles. Calcium allows the muscle to contract and is also involved in muscle production. 8. Stiffness Stiffness related to vitamin D deficiency usually occurs in the knees and fingers. This is related to inflammation, weakened cartilage, and weakened collagen. 9. Chronic fatigue Vitamin D supports your mitochondria, the energy factories of the cell. Without enough vitamin D, you can't make energy. 10. Slowed down thinking Vitamin D deficiency can cause diminished cognitive function. 11. Difficulty feeling satisfied If you're vitamin D deficient, you might not feel satisfied after eating, and you'll have a tendency to overeat. Consider taking around 10,000 to 20,000 IU of vitamin D3 per day, along with the cofactors magnesium, vitamin K2, zinc, and vitamin B6.

Please join me in welcoming Professor Bruce Hollis! Professor Hollis' research has provided a new understanding of the importance of vitamin D and its full range of functions. Vitamin D has been understood as an essential nutrient for skeletal integrity and maintaining blood calcium levels. As microbiology and research developed, researchers found that many cells that had nothing to do with the skeleton could respond to vitamin D, including cancer and immune cells. Vitamin D exists in different forms inside the body. When you take a supplement or sunlight hits your skin, you're dealing with the inactive form of vitamin D. It is then turned into a compound called 25-hydroxy vitamin D, the intermediate form of vitamin D that stays in the blood for weeks. This form is picked up in blood tests but isn't easily accessible by the tissues that might need it. The final form of vitamin D is one of the most potent hormones, 125 di-hydroxy vitamin D. Vitamin D is converted into the active form in the kidney but can also be converted inside the cells. The vast majority of studies substantiating our information on vitamin D in the U.S. have several problems and have produced inaccurate results. There is also no agreed-upon range on “normal” vitamin D levels. Professor Hollis has conducted research and has seen significant results using vitamin D to prevent birth complications in women in Iran, in patients with low-grade prostate cancer, and in lactation. He also explains the importance of magnesium, a key cofactor for vitamin D metabolism. Professor Hollis wants people to understand that few physicians recommend or acknowledge the benefits of vitamin D because national organizations have yet to properly understand and recognize them. Let's discuss the many benefits of green tea and how it can help with depression. But what exactly is green tea? Green tea is a drink made from unfermented leaves, which makes it different from other types of tea. It contains many pharmacologically active compounds that have been found to have numerous health benefits. One of these benefits is its ability to reduce depression. Studies have shown that drinking just three cups of green tea per week can reduce depression by 21 percent. But how exactly does green tea help with depression? Green tea has been found to have an impact on certain areas of the brain, such as the prefrontal cortex and the nucleus accumbens, which are involved in addiction. It also affects the hippocampus, which plays a role in cognitive function, memory, and learning. Another compound found in green tea is L-theanine, an amino acid that helps with mood stabilization and has been shown to improve depression directly. But the benefits of green tea don't stop there. Studies have also shown it to be anti-carcinogenic, antimicrobial, and neuroprotective. It has even been found to reverse age-related cognitive decline. But drinking green tea isn't the only natural way to combat depression. Here are some other methods you can try: • Exercise: A study found that exercise may have effects similar to Zoloft in reducing symptoms of depression. High-intensity interval training has been proven to be particularly beneficial for those with depression and anxiety. • Vitamin D: Deficiency in this essential nutrient has been linked to a higher risk of depression, so get enough sunlight and take a vitamin D supplement. • Fasting: Fasting has been found to have survival properties that can help our bodies function better, including reducing symptoms of depression. Visit www.drstevenlin.com for this episode and moreVitamin D Deficiency affects nearly every body system. Low vitamin D is a known risk for tooth decay, risk of obesity, and digestive conditions.New evidence is showing the connection between vitamin D and the brain. The mechanism may lie in vitamin D's crucial role in sleep.Studies have found that a deficiency of vitamin D may be associated with an increased risk of sleep disorders, including poor sleep quality, shorter duration of sleep, and daytime sleepiness. One theory is that vitamin D plays a role in regulating circadian rhythms, which could affect sleep-wake cycles. In a meta-analysis examining the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and sleep disorders, the results showed that serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, a marker of vitamin D levels, were inversely associated with an increased risk of sleep disorders.Another systematic review and meta-analysis found that vitamin D supplementation may improve sleep quality and total sleep time, particularly in people with sleep disorders.Stasha Gominak is a neurologist who focusses on the link between sleep quality and vitamin D levels. Dr. Gominak emphasizes the importance of vitamin D in sleep quality and sleep regulation.Low levels or a deficiency of vitamin D can lead to poor sleep quality and various sleep disorders, as well as other significant health issues.
