Damage to the optic nerve typically causes permanent and potentially severe loss of vision, as well as an abnormal pupillary reflex, which is diagnostically important. The type of visual field loss will depend on which portions of the optic nerve were damaged. Using an eye injection technique by our ophthalmologist who is specially trained in this technique called the “retrobulbar injection”, stem cells are placed behind the eye, next to the optic nerve, as close as possible to the area of injury. Join us in this case study involving Dog owner Susan Paulson. Susan lost her dog Kinetic to water intoxication, also known as Hyponatremia. Hyponatremia is a relatively rare but potentially fatal condition that is most commonly seen in dogs that love to play in the water. They tend to ingest large quantities of water very quickly. It can also happen when they “catch” pressurized water from sprinklers or hoses. Excessive amounts of water cause the body to lose sodium. The body’s cells begin to fill with water and swell. If the cells in the brain swell, it can affect the central nervous system which can be fatal. You hear the term "Knowledge is power" If you are not trained in K9 First-aid and CPR it is time to get started! In 1917, a munitions ship exploded in Halifax, Nova Scotia, devastating the city and shattering the lives of its citizens. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll follow the events of the disaster, the largest man-made explosion before Hiroshima, and the grim and heroic stories of its victims. We'll also consider the dangers of cactus plugging and puzzle over why a man would agree to be assassinated. Intro: In 1989 an unmanned Soviet MiG-23 flew all the way from Poland to Belgium. In 1793 architect Sir James Hall fashioned a model of Westminster Abbey from rods of willow. Sources for our story on the Halifax explosion: John U. Bacon, The Great Halifax Explosion, 2017. Laura M.
