Five years have passed since the initial waves of the pandemic, yet the echoes of devastation resonate deeply within Canada's nursing workforce. Burnout remains rampant, exacerbated by chronic understaffing, unsafe patient-to-nurse ratios, and a shocking lack of basic protections against workplace violence. This Nursing Week, the usual calls for celebration ring hollow for many on the frontlines. Instead of accepting platitudes, this episode dives into the stark realities facing nurses across the country. We'll explore why "thank yous" are no longer enough and why this designated week must become a catalyst for meaningful change. Join us as we discuss how nurses, their allies, and the public can leverage Nursing Week as a powerful platform for activism, demanding safe staffing levels, enforceable patient ratios, and tangible measures to ensure the well-being and safety of those who dedicate their lives to caring for others. It's time to move beyond applause and demand the systemic changes our healthcare system – and our nurses – desperately need. Order our Book, The Wisdom Of Nurses! The Canadian Medical Association recently issued an apology to Indigenous Peoples for the harms inflicted upon them by the medical system, acknowledging a history of racism, neglect, and abuse. In this crucial episode, we delve into the significance of this apology and explore what true transformative medical justice must entail for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples in Canada. We discuss the ethical and moral obligations we all share in advocating for humanitarian principles. We'll explore: The Silence and the Struggle: We will discuss the reasons why many healthcare workers feel unable to speak out, and the immense pressures they face. Humanitarian Imperative: We will emphasize that hospitals and healthcare workers are protected under international humanitarian law, and must never be targets.  Advocating for Aid: We'll discuss the urgent need for consistent and unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza, and how we can use our platforms to raise awareness and support these efforts. Protecting the Vulnerable: We will highlight the devastating impact of conflict on the most vulnerable populations, especially children, and the importance of prioritizing their safety and well-being. The role of advocating against genocide: We will discuss how it is morally and ethically our job to advocate against genocide and how the ongoing war affects the delivery of humanitarian aid. Using our platforms: We will discuss the importance of using all available platforms, to discuss the current situation, and to advocate for the protection of all civilian life.  Maintaining Our Humanity: Even in the face of unspeakable atrocities, it's vital to remember the shared humanity of all people. We'll discuss the importance of remaining compassionate, avoiding dehumanization, and recognizing that every life lost is a profound tragedy. Compassion Amidst Atrocities: We will highlight how crucial it is to maintain compassion in the face of atrocities. We will discuss how compassion can drive us to advocate for peace, and how it is a vital part of what makes us human. We will also discuss how losing compassion, is losing a part of our humanity. Have you heard that all nurses aren't made the same? That some are Registered Nurses and others are Registered Practical Nurses or Licensed Practical Nurses? Did you know that even within nursing, we create categories of who is "really" a nurse? Let's cut the bullshi*t, shall we? In this episode, the Gritty Nurses talk about registered practical nurses (RPNs) with none other than Dianne Martin, CEO of WeRPN. We discuss what RPNs can do, common misconceptions, and raising awareness and improving working conditions, and her hopes and aspirations for RPNs. After all, if nurse is in your title, you're a nurse.  Dianne Martin has been a nurse since 1979. She graduated first as an RPN and then in 1998, she graduated as an RN with a diploma in nursing and is dually registered as both an RN and RPN. Currently she works as an RPN in the role of Chief Executive Officer of WeRPN where she has been recognized for her work to build bridges of greater understanding and respect among the categories of nurses in Ontario. Dianne has experience working in several Ontario hospitals predominantly in the field of Perinatal Care. She has held several leadership positions including professional practice coordinator in an Ontario hospital and senior policy analyst with the Nursing Policy and Innovation Branch of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (formerly The Nursing Secretariat). In 2016, Dianne received the Premier's Award which recognizes college graduates whose achievements have made a difference in the province of Ontario. She is the daughter of a nurse, mother to a nurse, and she holds all those who care for others in the highest regard. Thank you to our episode sponsor, healthcareproviders.ca! In the near future, birth defects, traumatic injuries, limb loss and perhaps even cancer could be cured through bioelectricity—electrical signals that communicate to our cells how to rebuild themselves. This innovative idea has been tested on flatworms and frogs by biologist Michael Levin, whose research investigates how bioelectricity provides the blueprint for how our bodies are built—and how it could be the future of regenerative medicine. Our podcast is taking a quick summer break, but we wanted to take this time to share some of our favorite episodes with you. One of the most fascinating topics we've learned about on this show is bioelectricity; the concept that we could teach our bodies to heal and regenerate on their own. That's why we're resharing our episode with Michael Levin, a biologist and professor at Tufts University, who is studying this new approach to regenerative medicine.

In this particular instance, an epidural needle was left in Giovanna Ippolito's back from years ago! Furthermore, no one will take responsibility for it. Amie & Sara unpack some of the issues in hospitals related to medical malpractice, patient advocacy and glaring gaps in the healthcare system. Giovanna Ippolito is living with a broken needle in her spine after it broke off during childbirth. An anesthesiologist then left the 4cm/2 inch-long fragment embedded in her back — and didn't tell her what happened. Instead, it was discovered during an X-ray more than a decade later. The woman says her doctor can't directly link the pain she's experiencing to the needle, but one thing has been made clear to her: it's not safe to remove it. For more than a century, scientists have been studying Alzheimer's disease and developing theories about its underlying cause. The leading theory for decades has been that abnormal amyloid plaques in the brains of those who suffer from the disease are the central cause. But, according one renowned Alzheimer's researcher, this myopic focus is not only flawed, but may be holding back our search for a cure. Neurobiologist Karl Herrup argues that we need to go back to the drawing board, redefine the disease and understand the many factors that could cause it before we can race for a cure. A professor of neurobiology and an investigator in the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Herrup is the author of How Not to Study a Disease: The Story of Alzheimer's.
