You might be familiar with my guest today, Nora Gedgaudas, as she is one of the leading voices for both the Price Pottenger and Westin A. Price organizations with her powerful and important contributions to the Paleo community and healthy and ancestral eating and lifestyle. As the last show of the year, in this conversation, we take a more personal approach as Nora and I discuss determining values, the state of the world right now, recognizing when you are being lied to and trusting your intuition - which ultimately led Nora to moving away from her personal sanctuary in Oregon to live off-the-grid! Nora shares different types of "off-grid" living and explains the self-sufficient challenges and benefit of living this type of lifestyle. Of course we chat animals including chickens, ducks, geese and even discuss what it's like living in proximity with bears and mountain lions! Although these types of convos can lead to an exploration of dire circumstances and the inevitable "doomsday" topic I loved this conversation with Nora because it was so different than her typical media appearance and most importantly, I feel there will be little nuggets of wisdom and ideas in there FOR YOU to perhaps incorporate into your own life to help you adjust to the changes in the world and live a more empowered, self-sufficient life! Plus, Dr.Joe and Nurse Amy discuss what you need to know to have a thriving medicinal herb garden underway well in advance of the zombie apocalypse! Over the last few years I've had my eyes opened to the importance of medical training in case of an emergency. Most of us are never exposed to the realities of incurring a serious injury on the trail and few are really prepared to do anything if something happens. It doesn't take much for a ride to go from fun and casual to a potential life and death situation. And even if it isn't a life and death situation right away, a few bad breaks and things can go from bad to worse pretty quickly as well. The reason I bring this topic up isn't to scare riders away from riding but to empower them to be the hero if they are called on. Nothing sucks worse than standing there while someone needs help and you don't know what to do. The funny thing is, though, that it doesn't take much for you to better prepare yourself. We're not trying to become EMT's or emergency room doctors, we're just trying to stabilize the situation long enough for the real help to get there. One of the best resources I've found to help me become better prepared for a medical emergency is the company Mountain Man Medical. They have a great free online course that they offer and they have the best prices on quality medical gear. Brian McLaughlin is the Director of Medical Training at Mountain Man Medical and a former Corpsman (medic for the Marines) who brings a lot of experience and insights into this area for us. I've had Brian on the podcast before and I wanted to bring him back to talk about the Sweetwater Trauma Kit that they sell on www.mountainmanmedical.com, which is what he recommends starting with if you don't have a trauma kit yet. We talk about each of the items in the kit and why they are important, review the MARCH checklist that you want to use if you encounter a medical emergency and we even cover what to do with a snakebite. BTW, if you are going to invest in some medical equipment then be sure to use the coupon code BIKEJAMES at checkout to save 10%. Don't leave your safety in the hands of someone else - you are your own best First Responder if something goes wrong. If every rider who reads this will invest just a little time and money in being better prepared then we'd all be better off. Until next time… Ride Strong, James Wilson MTB Strength Training Systems
People in off-grid settings are often called upon to perform activities to which they're not accustomed. In daily survival, the inexperienced will suffer mishaps that lead to injury; in situations where sanitation is questionable, these injuries carry a risk of infection, especially in unsanitary conditions. One of these is known as “cellulitis.” Dr. Joe Alton tells you what you need to know about this common problem. Also, aquarium antibiotics have been a staple for survival medics since Dr. Alton's article in survivalblog close to 15 years ago. Now, the government is tightening the screws as to how citizens can access antibiotics, starting with food-producing livestock. What does it mean for the preparedness community? Plus, an outbreak of respiratory syncytial virus on the west coast may become an epidemic and part of a triple whammy this winter along with flu and COVID. Find out about this surging virus. Finally, some advice on what to do in falls into cold water from a capsized boat (or, in the case of recent headlines, a fall from a cruise ship!) All this and more in the latest Survival Medicine Podcast with Joe Alton MD, aka Dr. Bones! Hey, don't forget your copy of The Survival Medicine Handbook, the 4th edition, a 2022 Book Excellence Award Winner in the Medical category!
Like so many advocates, Nancy came to this space after caring for her parents in their advanced years. However, a family history steeped in loss from an early age prepared her than most. She was already well advised about knowing the important information, where to find said information and how to proceed in the difficult medical situations that arise. But what she was not necessarily prepared for was discovering systemic missteps that unintentionally occurred as her parents aged. In the process she was able to save her parents over $200,000/year, unraveling financial, legal, medical and homecare fraud and abuse. Nancy's view of her role of family caregiver is one worth hearing. She was able to apply the lessons she learned from her entrepreneurial father with her own corporate experience to approach the caregiving role like a CEO of a small business. No doubt the caregiving experience takes its emotional and psychological toll. Adopting a CEO mindset can be helpful in organizing all that needs to be done and remaining calm amidst the myriad of medical care and logistic decisions that need to be made. Nancy is not only an advocate but a role model for caregivers.

In normal times, once you have stopped the bleeding and applied a splint or dressing, the emergency is “over.” You sit and wait for an ambulance or rescue helicopter to arrive and your part is over. In an austere setting, however, the medic must follow the status of the wound for more than a few minutes or hours. You're in charge until the person is fully recovered. Constant, diligent wound care is your responsibility. It's important to understand that a wound is not just a “hole”; it's part of a person who should be informed of your plan of action and participate, if possible, in their care. Most wounds will heal completely over time, but some may never achieve full recovery. Due to massive injuries or complicating conditions such as diabetes, the best care may sometimes yield a less-than-optimal result even in good times. The medic's duty is to care for the patient the best they can with the limited supplies and technology available off the grid. In this episode, Dr. Joe Alton discusses daily wound care in austere settings, including the removal of non-viable tissue using sharp debridement. It ain't pretty, but if you're the medic, it's you that has to do it. Also, questions that preppers should ask their doctors when told to take a new drug or get a serious diagnostic test. Well, it's summer and a lot of folks are heading out into the great outdoors. In a disaster or any other situation that knocks us off the grid, we'll be exposed a lot more to things like insect stings and poison ivy, as well as strange food items that we aren't accustomed to. Being in contact with all this stuff may cause Allergic reactions in susceptible individuals. When we develop an allergic reaction, it might be mild or it might be severe. If severe enough, we refer to it as anaphylaxis or anaphylactic shock. Dr. Joe Alton discusses what you need to know and options on how to get epinephrine auto-injectors at a discount.. Plus, a discussion all about lightning in summer storms, and what to do to avoid being a victim. Even if you've medically prepared, and have a big stockpile of conventional medications, hey, they'll eventually run out. If you're gonna be the family medic in a survival setting, you'll need to find alternatives if you want to keep your people healthy long-term. What's the difference between alternative, complementary, integrative, holistic, and other types of care? A bill entered in California's state legislature has gone where President Biden's “disinformation bureau” couldn't. Bill AB-2098 gives power to the state's medical board to investigate and punish doctors whose advice and treatment regarding COVID-19 varies from their perceived “applicable standard of care.” The medical establishment now has “disinformation” authority over others who dare to voice alternative options to their patients or even on social media. Dr. Joe Alton, aka Dr. Bones, gives his thoughts. Also, Nurse Amy Alton tell you about peppermint oil, and its potential as a viable tool in the survival medicine cabinet. Uses and ways to prepare it are included. Plus, Dr. Joe Alton talks about how to deal with wounds from sharp objects like knives in survival settings with limited supplies. While most riders understand the need for better technical skills to ride with more confidence and improve their safety on the trail, few understand the need for basic medical skills to improve these things as well. There are a lot of reasons for this lack of understanding, including lack of coverage in the mountain biking media and misunderstandings about what you need to learn and carry. But the end result is that, as a group, we are woefully unprepared to handle a traumatic injury situation. I know because up until a year or so ago I was one of those riders. Ignorant about how easy it was to learn what I needed to know and how inexpensive it was to have a few tools to help, I went on countless rides where if something had gone wrong it could have been a disaster. Luckily I came upon some great resources to help me improve my medical preparedness, including the company Mountain Man Medical (https://www.mountainmanmedical.com/). Their mission is to help prepare as many people as possible to be able to provide help in the case of a traumatic injury situation and they proved to be one of the best resources I could find. I reached out to their director Brian McLaughlin to see if he would come on the BikeJames Podcast and he agreed to come on and share some potentially life saving information with my audience. In this podcast he shares… The MARCH algorithm and how it can help you know how to help someone in a traumatic injury situation. The truth about tourniquets and how long they can be on before someone might lose the limb it is on. The top pieces of gear you should consider carrying on the trail. Brian's secret to be successful in a traumatic injury situation. We also talk about the free video training series they offer on the MARCH algorithm, which I can't recommend strongly enough. Yes, it is completely free with no strings attached and you can find it here - https://www.mountainmanmedical.com/product/emergency-trauma-response-training-course/ The SWAT-T Tourniquet that Brian recommends you consider carrying on the trail you can find here - https://www.mountainmanmedical.com/product/swat-t-tourniquet/ The Tracker Trauma Kit we talked about can be found here - https://www.mountainmanmedical.com/product/tracker-trauma-kit/ You can also save 15% off your purchase with the coupon code BIKEJAMES, just enter it at checkout to save some money on equipment that could save a life. I hope you get some valuable information from this podcast that you never need but, if you do, can save you or someone else. And please share this podcast with your fellow riders, the more of us that are on the trail prepared to help in a traumatic injury situation the safer we'll all be. Until next time… Ride Strong, James Wilson MTB Strength Training Systems p.s. I shared what I carry on the trail to help in an emergency situation in the Advanced MTB Loadout video. Check it out to get some ideas on what you can carry to be better prepared to help yourself or someone else on the trail. And remember to get your gear at www.mountainmanmedical.com and use the coupon code BIKEJAMES to get 15% off your gear.
The environment plays a large role in your success as medic in survival settings. If you don't take weather conditions and other factors into account, you have made the environment your enemy, and it's a formidable one. One major issue is cold-related illness, otherwise known as hypothermia. Normally, the body core ranges from 97.5 to 99.5 degrees Fahrenheit (36.5-37.5 degrees Celsius) when taken orally or rectally. Rectal temps tend to be slightly higher than oral, and oral temps slightly higher than skin readings, such as those taken in the armpit. Hypothermia begins when the body core drops below 95 degrees. Dr. Joe Alton discusses what to do when the family medic is faced with someone struck by cold exposure. Also, Nurse Amy Alton begins a series on nursing care off the grid. While not as sensational as emergency trauma care, the daily maintenance of the bedridden group member is so important that you're bound to lose people if you don't know how to properly care for them all the way to recovery. Amy discusses what you need to know in part 1... Wishing you the best of health in good times or bad, Joe and Amy Alton Hey, have you gotten your copy of the brand new, greatly expanded 4th edition of the Survival Medicine Handbook? You should check it out here! You'll be glad you did!.

There is no substitute for being medically prepared. Any disaster, short term or long term, puts you and your loved ones in jeopardy without medical preparedness. History tells us that these types of calamities can happen. From tornadoes in Joplin, Missouri to hurricanes on the gulf coast, medical personnel could easily be out of reach when a real emergency strikes someone that you care about. In this situation, you are now the highest medical resource left, whether you like it or not. Today's guests, Amy Alton (Nurse Amy) an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner and Certified Nurse-Midwife, and her husband Joseph Alton (Dr. Bones) a Medical Doctor and OB/GYN Surgeon are on a mission to make sure we have the survival skills needed during times when medical facilities may not be available to us or our families.
