In the second of our powerful two-part conversation, Emily Kircher-Morris and Dr. William Dodson discuss the complexities of ADHD, emotional dysregulation and its subset, and Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD). He explains how RSD can manifest in ADHDers, the impact of childhood experiences, and the importance of understanding and treating these conditions. There is a need for updated diagnostic criteria and effective treatment strategies, including medication and supportive environments. They dig into the complexities of ADHD, including management strategies, and the importance of understanding the overlap between social anxiety and mood disorders. TAKEAWAYS Emotional dysregulation is often overlooked in ADHD diagnoses. RSD is a specific condition affecting many with ADHD. The emotional pain from RSD can be both emotional and physical, and can lead to significant life impairments. Childhood experiences can exacerbate RSD but are not the sole cause. Medication can be effective in managing emotional dysregulation. Understanding RSD is essential for clinicians working with ADHD patients. Preventative strategies are key in managing RSD episodes. Sleep, nutrition, structure, and routine play vital roles in emotional regulation. Social anxiety and rejection sensitivity can coexist but are distinct. Why is it so tough to ramp up housing supply when it seems like everyone's talking about it? In this episode, we're joined by Jill Garner, the Victorian Government Architect, who gives us a behind-the-scenes look at why boosting supply isn't as simple as just setting targets. Jill brings her extensive experience to the table, sharing insights into the realities of urban planning and design from both government and industry perspectives. Jill helps us understand the challenges that come with trying to increase housing supply discussing the struggles that state and local governments face in balancing the need for more homes with the importance of good design and quality construction. She explains why meeting housing targets isn't just about making plans—it's about dealing with real-world obstacles like costs, time, and planning rules. Our conversation also touches on the “Future Homes” initiative, which aims to provide more housing options in Melbourne's suburbs without sacrificing livability and explore why simply rezoning areas for higher density doesn't automatically result in new homes and what's really holding back development. This episode is perfect for anyone who wants to understand the real reasons behind the housing shortage and what needs to happen to make more homes available. The insights presented in this episode offer a clear look at the challenges and possibilities in solving this complex issue. So let's dive right into it! Episode Highlights: 00:00 - Introduction 01:06 - Who is Jill Garner? 02:38 - What is a government architect and their role in the Victorian government 05:04 - How does each level of government address housing supply and affordability issues? 08:02 - How does the state government coordinate with local councils in Victoria? 10:48 - Is Melbourne seeing similar government rhetoric on housing density as other places? 12:59 - Where is the disconnect between housing targets and actual construction? 15:33 - Can pre-designed homes compete with custom builds? 22:45 - Can rezoning truly improve housing affordability, or is something missing? 25:18 - Is the pushback on future homes driven by consumer resistance or developer concerns? 28:55 - How are Victoria's ongoing projects impacting developers' building costs and decisions? 33:28 - Is Melbourne better equipped for density with its transport system? 38:52 - How can Melbourne address city-level needs and past high-density apartment mistakes? 43:37 - Should other states follow Melbourne's lead on sustainability and passive design? 48:24 - How are government plans for Melbourne adapting to the rise in remote work? 52:58 - Jill Garner's property dumbo About Our Guest: Jill Garner, the first woman to serve as Victorian Government Architect, was appointed in 2015 and brings 40 years of experience in both practice and government. She leads a team promoting integrated design and collaboration within the state government. Jill continues her architectural practice through Garner Davis Architects, which has earned numerous awards. An RMIT Masters by Design alumnus, she has taught at RMIT and Melbourne Universities and served on several industry boards. Jill chaired the Australian Committee for the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale and became a Life Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects, receiving the President's Prize in 2022. Thoughts on Record: Podcast of the Ottawa Institute of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Understanding the evolutionary significance of depression can quite helpful in its conceptualization and treatment.  Founder in the field of evolutionary medicine, Dr. Randy Nesse, joins us for an encore discussion in which we consider how striving, motivation and desire for control can play into the evolution of depressive symptoms. In this conversation we cover:  why failure to give up an unachievable goal may be a central cause of some forms of depression and why low mood might be advantageous in these situationshow understanding dynamics around food-foraging can give us insight into how our nervous system cues us to disengage from various activities at the best cost-benefit ratio  the types of stressors that might be particularly likely to evoke a response of “ceaseless striving” that can potentially cause depressionsome of the other causes of depression that exist outside of this modelhow this model can inform our assessment and treatment of depressionmania through the lens of an evolutionary modelthe compassionate consideration of grief (and complicated grief) from an evolutionary lensdifferentiating between the “necessary” pain of to alert oneself to a life circumstance that needs remediation vs. the opposite – where perhaps the mood problem is causing the life circumstance (i.e., the normal emotion regulation mechanisms have broken down)   the role of medication in treating depression given some of the caveats around the evolutionary origins of depressionRandolph M. Nesse, MD, is a founder of the field of evolutionary medicine and co-author with George C. Williams of Why We Get Sick. Episode #75  On this episode I talk to award winning author Joe LeValley. We talk about how he started writing his first novel, how he met The Who, some of the many celebrities he has met and going from getting his first book published to the release of his 7th novel! A bit more from his website (https://www.josephlevalley.com/index.html): My career path to becoming an author was unusual, to say the least. I like to describe it as a life of "outrageous good fortune." Significant roles in the past have included:            *  Reporter-photographer for Iowa newspapers for seven years.  During that time, I wrote thousands of articles ranging from breaking news to feature stories to personal columns.              *  Served for more than 30 years as an executive in Iowa hospitals and its largest statewide health care network. I was project leader on numerous expansions of services and facilities.  I assisted many Iowa hospitals in developing strategic plans and was a frequent public speaker on health care policy.  My staff and I won four national awards for excellence in communications.            *  Musician. Play drums and guitar.  I have performed in rock bands, a country-rock trio and as a solo artist.  I also am a composer. You can hear some of my original music under the "Music" section of this website, or on YouTube at JosephLeValley, or at www.rockiowa.net. In 2016, I was thrilled and honored to be inducted with the Mourning Glory Rock Band into the Iowa Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame.  *  Writer. After a life of writing many different types of fiction and non-fiction, I published my first novel in early 2019. I now have written five novels and am working on number six. Four have been published and have won a total of nine awards.            A lifelong Iowan, I am a proud alumnus of Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, Drake University in Des Moines, and the University of Iowa in Iowa City. I have a degree in journalism from Drake and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Iowa. I am proud to note that Iowa Central inducted me into its "Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame" in a ceremony in Fort Dodge, Iowa on Saturday, November 22, 2022.              I am a Life Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives. I serve or have served on the boards of directors of many community organizations in northern and central Iowa, and have served on committees for state and national health care advocacy organizations. I also am a member of Mystery Writers of America (MWA) and The Authors Guild, and participate in activities of International Thriller Writers (ITW) and StorySummit.             My wife Jane and I have six children and live in Dallas County, Iowa. Links:https://www.odysseus-unbound.org/ Faceook YouTube Book: Odysseus Unbound: The Search for Homer's Ithaca In the series we have look at some elements within Greek history that have connections to traditional tales and mythology. Some big examples of these were when we looked at the Trojan War, Mycenae and the Minoans. Well once again we are looking at historical connections to what can be found within the ancient writings of Homer, this time with a focus on the Odyssey. This episode will be focused around the idea of locating the island of Ithaca that Homer describes within the Odyssey. For a long time, controversy has surrounded the actual location of Homers Ithaca, with many since ancient times questioning whether the Island we know today as Ithaki was actually the Ithaca of the Odyssey. In our modern time, one such man also questioned this idea. Robert Bittlestone with a Classics, Science and economics background, would return from the business world to his love of Classics to delve into the mystery around the home island of Odysseus. Robert would develop a working theory that would be eventually presented to an audience at Cambridge University. This is where Prof. James Diggle would become involved, seeing great merit in what Robert presented. Prof. Diggle would go on to contribute to Robert Bittlestone's book, Odysseus Unbound. The search for Homer's Ithaca. Unfortunately, Robert would pass away in 2015, however his legacy and work would continue on with the creation of the Odysseus Unbound foundation, with a number of professionals and academics making up its members, including Roberts son's Simon and Mathew. The Odysseus unbound Foundation is an educational charity dedicated to advancing knowledge of the ancient world. Specifically, we conduct and promote scientific and historical research to discover the actual locations of historical sites that have been described in ancient literature such as Homer's Odyssey. They are committed to publishing widely all their results so our understanding of the ancient world and the origins of our civilization today is enhanced to everyone's benefit. The Foundation was formed in 2017. It is built upon the inspiration of the late Robert Bittlestone whose ground-breaking ideas about the location of Ithaca, the homeland of Odysseus described by Homer in the Odyssey, are showing significant promise.Prof. James Diggle, Trustee of the Odysseus Unbound foundation is Emeritus Professor of Greek and Latin at Cambridge University and a Life Fellow of Queens' College. His publications include The Cambridge Greek Lexicon (Editor-in-Chief, Cambridge, 2021), The Oxford Classical Text of Euripides (Oxford, 1981-94), Euripidea: Collected Essays (Oxford, 1994) and Theophrastus: Characters (Cambridge, 2004).He was University Orator at Cambridge for eleven years and has published a selection of his speeches in Cambridge Orations (Cambridge, 1994). On the podcast this week, Malcolm Guite talks about the faith of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, the anniversary of whose death was marked on Monday (25 July). Part of the interview featured on the very first episode of the Church Times Podcast, in 2017, shortly after the publication of his book Mariner: A voyage with Samuel Taylor Coleridge (Hodder & Stoughton) (Books, 10 February 2017). “Coleridge roots our own capacity to know through the imagination with the divine imagination. And he sees the imagination with which we perceive the world as an echo in the finite mind of the eternal and infinite act of creation in the divine”, Malcolm says. “That's dynamite, that's an amazing thing he's actually saying: anybody engaged in a moment of artistic apprehension and intuition is echoing the way God made the world and helping to see it.” After the interview, Malcolm reads a sonnet that he wrote for Coleridge. It was recorded in St Michael's, Highgate, in north London, where Coleridge is buried. Malcolm's most recent book is Lifting the Veil: Imagination and the Kingdom of God (Canterbury Press) (Faith feature, 13 May, Books 1 July). The Revd Dr Malcolm Guite is a Life Fellow of Girton College, Cambridge, and writes the weekly Poet's Corner column for the Church Times. What do you know about your ADHD medications? We didn't know much, so we brought in the expert, Dr. William Dodson, a Board-Certified adult psychiatrist and one of the first clinicians who specialized in adults with ADHD decades ago. Because here's the thing: we don't deal much with ADHD meds. As a coach, Nikki refers folks to their physicians. And apart from being a patient himself, Pete's experience dealing with medications is far from diverse. And yet, the field of questions we get from folks in our community relating to medications is vast. Today, we start the process of getting those questions answered. Not Debunking Myths, Clarifying UnderstandingAs Dr. Dodson says, no one ultimately is going to care about your specific decision around medication other than you. But it's important that you have the data you need to get your questions answered before you make that decision yourself. We can say this for sure: Dr. Dodson is a professional in the field with qualified experience in practice and a respected and verified source. We hope you find something you can take away from this discussion that helps you in your decision-making. About William W. Forced social isolation, shuttered businesses and canceled or scaled-down worship services have contributed to an overwhelming sense of loss and fear among people all over the world. And there's a scientific reason for these emotions, explains Timothy R. Jennings, M.D., board-certified psychiatrist, master psychopharmacologist and founder of Come and Reason Ministries. Dr. Jennings is a much sought-after speaker who regularly addresses non-medical professionals on the subjects of Spirituality in Medicine, Depression and its Spiritual and Physical Connections, and Alzheimer's Dementia. He also speaks to medical professionals on the topics of Psychotherapy in Clinical Practice, Major Depression in the Primary Care Setting, and the Neurobiology of Depression — among many others. He describes how the measures taken to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 can have physiological and psychological impacts that, like dominoes, will topple our sources of strength and resilience. “Research shows that social rejection, isolation and loneliness activate the brain's stress pathways, thereby increasing inflammatory factors, diminishing immune response and increasing vulnerability to viral infections and cancer, and make you less resilient in life,” he says. In the shadow of government mandates that restrict our interactions with others, what can we do within our four walls to build our resilience and guard our overall wellbeing? Dr. Jennings suggests we can boost our resilience through physical exercise, eating a healthy diet, getting regular sleep, cognitive training, having a healthy relationship with God and spiritual development — measures that can actually alter the way our brains react to stress. Web: https://comeandreason.com “Healthy spirituality confers resilience in a multitude of ways,” he says. “It develops your higher cortex, which calms your fear circuits. You have less fear and you're less anxious if you've got a developed prefrontal cortex. And if you have a loving relationship with a God you trust, that's part of your prefrontal cortex. And if people have more love, they have less fear.” Another part of our prefrontal cortex is altruism — something those with healthy spirituality are more likely to engage in — and helping others also calms fear circuits. Our ability to face a crisis and bounce back is, in part, inherited from our parents and even grandparents through our genetic makeup, Dr. Jennings explains. But through a combination of mental, physical and spiritual adaptive measures, we can boost our resilience and improve our ability to overcome life's challenges. Dr. Timothy R. Jennings operates a private practice in Chattanooga and has successfully treated thousands of patients. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and Life-Fellow of the Southern Psychiatric Association. He is also a prolific author whose books include The God-Shaped Brain: How Changing Your View of God Transforms Your Life; Could It Be This Simple?
