Update from 2023: Heat exhaustion is less serious than heatstroke also sometimes called sunstroke. Symptoms of heat exhaustion can occur quickly or over a few days. Many patients will call complaining of leg cramping here is a list of symptoms: Heat exhaustion can lead to: - headaches - muscle cramping - nausea and vomiting - excessive sweating and cold clammy skin - on occasion a decreased pulse and feelings of weakness - dizziness and sometimes fainting - dark-colored urine can occur from dehydration It's important to note that heat exhaustion can be alleviated with hydration and moving to cooler temperatures indoors. Heatstroke is a life threatening medical emergency and your body's temperature can rise to 104 or more. It needs immediate treatment and we encourage you to call 911. Heat stroke affects the brain and nervous system which can lead to serious injury. It also affects your organs. Immediate attention is required. When a person has reached this level they usually have stopped sweating, as their body's ability to cool is now disabled they are more likely to faint as well as have the symptoms arriving from heat exhaustion. Instead of a weak pulse, the body responds with a racing heart beat. They may appear confused, agitated, slurred speach and appear if they are drunk if they had been drinking alcohol. Alcohol and heat do not mix and a serious event can be mistaken for a drunken fool instead of a heat stroke that can cause a person to loose consciousness and even coma. These are simple definitions to help you and your loved ones seek medical care. The key is to stay hydrated while out in the sun, use sunscreen and have shade available. Remember to keep an eye out on your fur children as pets can also suffer from these same consequences and if the pavement, sand or walking is area is hot on your feet it is also hot on all of our four legged friends. Born in July of 2000, Ame Deal's brief life fell nothing short of torture. In many ways her case bears a stunning resemblance to the horrendous story we told in Episode 87: The Horrific Crimes of Howard Ave - The Sad Story of Jeanette Maples. If the story the Deal/Stoltzmann household presented to the world following Ame's untimely death was true it was simply a tragic accident. As is often the case, the truth was much darker and would leave a community devastated in the wake of a brutal and senseless crime. Today we shared a promo for the Crimes & Closets Podcast!

Furthermore, if training, exercising or just working in the heat for too long, you may experience some significant side effects and some that could be life threatening if you do seek immediate attention. In this podcast, we speak with Dr. Michelle King from the Gatorade Sports Science Institute about the impact of the heat and humidity on hydration status, the signs and symptoms of dehydration and heat stroke, the importance of electrolytes, Gatorade's new sweat testing patch which is available for the consumer, and in the end, you'll get to learn which band she would be the lead singer for if she had the opportunity. About Michelle King, PhD Dr. Michelle King is an Associate Principal Scientist at the Gatorade Sports Science Institute. Michelle's body of work has focused on the innate immune response to physical exertion in extreme environmental conditions. Michelle is based in Barrington, IL, where her primary role is to support GSSI's internal program by designing and conducting studies related to hydration and nutrition. Michelle joined the team following her post-doctoral work at the US Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine, where she investigated if novel oral rehydration solutions could delay the onset of exertional heat stroke or accelerate recovery from organ damage. During her time at the University of Florida she studied how the muscle, gut, and immune system communicate during extreme environmental conditions, specifically in exertional heat stroke. Michelle has multiple publications in thermoregulation including peer-reviewed manuscripts and a book chapter. She previously enjoyed working in physical therapy clinics and teaching courses in the exercise sciences such as Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, and Exercise Prescription. “Once you get too hot, it's too late.” Today we get into the challenges and benefits of heat training. We go into when and how to train, plus explain how getting outside when it's hot is a win. We also look at the parallels between heat training and racing. What you can learn from giving yourself time to check your system and why that is everything in racing. Dehydration, cold showers, and negative split mentality. Racing is all about connecting the links in the chain and we'll explain how the lower paces in heat will help you do better down the road when it matters.
