In today's episode, we have a very special guest, Matthew R. Reynolds. I reached out to Matthew after reading his weekly email where he spoke about envy and jealousy. But the first half of our conversation focuses on his father and reclaiming ancestors.Matthew opens up about a longing he has carried with him throughout his life - a longing to know his father. As he shares his heartfelt desire to connect with his deceased father and explore the impact of his absence, we dive deep into the themes of internalized racial oppression and the capitalist system that perpetuates it.Matthew's father passed away from Emphysema and COPD, and to honor him, Matthew takes a moment to say his father's name out loud. We learn about his great-great-grandfather, who was a slave in Alabama, and how this past has strongly influenced his own father's life and subsequently Matthew's own.As the conversation unfolds, Amanda and Matthew share their experiences of connecting with their ancestors. Amanda reveals her deep connection with trees as her ancestors, while Matthew reflects on his Irish ancestry and the importance of standing by trees. The belief that we are all connected, made of stardust, forms the foundation of their discussion. As we journey through Matthew's exploration of his father's life, we also find ourselves transported to the awe-inspiring beauty of the big island of Hawaii where Matthew resides. But the conversation doesn't end there. Aminata and Matthew discuss dance and theater as a form of healing abuse, racism and intergenerational trauma. In the second half, Matthew reframes our perceptions of jealousy and envy. He encourages us to question the definition of success imposed upon us by society and to explore our own unique paths. Matthew also offers a powerful acronym for FAIL: "first attempt in learning." Matthew also emphasizes accountability as a positive in our journey towards authenticity. We all need supportive communities and coaches who can help us navigate our shadows and empower us to stay true to ourselves and achieve our fullest potential.Matthew also invites us to embrace difficulty and discomfort because they can lead us to profound personal and collective transformation. So, grab a cup of tea, find a comfortable spot, and join us as we explore the intertwined threads of ancestry, healing, and the complex emotions of envy and jealousy. BUFFALO, NY- December 20, 2023 – A new #research paper was #published in Aging (listed by MEDLINE/PubMed as "Aging (Albany NY)" and "Aging-US" by Web of Science) Volume 15, Issue 23, entitled, “Benidipine calcium channel blocker promotes the death of cigarette smoke-induced senescent cells and improves lung emphysema.” Smoking is the main risk factor for many lung diseases including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Cigarette smoke (CS) contains carcinogenic and reactive oxygen species that favor DNA mutations and perturb the homeostasis and environment of cells. CS induces lung cell senescence resulting in a stable proliferation arrest and a senescence-associated secretory phenotype. It was recently reported that senescent cell accumulation promotes several lung diseases. In this new study, researchers Alberta Palazzo, Gabriela Makulyte, Delphine Goerhig, Jean-Jacques Médard, Vincent Gros, François Trottein, Serge Adnot, David Vindrieux, Jean-Michel Flaman, and David Bernard from Université de Lyon, Equipe Labellisée la Ligue Contre le Cancer, Université Paris Est Créteil, Hôpital Henri Mondor, and Université Lille performed a chemical screen, using an FDA-approved drug library, to identify compounds selectively promoting the death of CS-induced senescent lung cells. “Here, our aim was to identify senolytic compounds in the context of CS-induced senescence and to assess whether they improved lung emphysema.” Aside from the well-known senolytic, ABT-263, the researchers identified other potentially new senescence-eliminating compounds, including a new class of molecules, the dihydropyridine family of calcium voltage-gated channel (CaV) blockers. Among these blockers, Benidipine decreased senescent lung cells and ameliorates lung emphysema in a mouse model. The dihydropyridine family of CaV blockers thus constitutes a new class of senolytics that could improve lung diseases. “Hence, our work paves the way for further studies on the senolytic activity of CaV blockers in different senescence contexts and age-related diseases.” DOI - https://doi.org/10.18632/aging.205259 Corresponding author - David Bernard - david.bernard@lyon.unicancer.fr Sign up for free Altmetric alerts about this article - https://aging.altmetric.com/details/email_updates?id=10.18632%2Faging.205259 Subscribe for free publication alerts from Aging - https://www.aging-us.com/subscribe-to-toc-alerts Keywords - aging, senolytic, cigarette smoke, lung disease, cellular senescence, calcium channel About Aging-US Launched in 2009, Aging-US publishes papers of general interest and biological significance in all fields of aging research and age-related diseases, including cancer—and now, with a special focus on COVID-19 vulnerability as an age-dependent syndrome. Emphysema is a chronic lung condition characterized by damage to the air sacs in the lungs, causing difficulty breathing and shortness of breath. While emphysema is primarily caused by long-term exposure to irritants such as tobacco smoke, air pollution, and other environmental factors, psychosomatic factors can also contribute to the symptoms and progression of the condition.Psychosomatic emphysema may manifest in the following ways:
What do spider webs, emphysema and Alabama football have in common - absolutely nothing unless I'm involved in it. Yes, I had a CT scan and it looks like I have a few nodules in 1 of my lungs and the Radiologist saw the beginnings of Emphysema. It was a pretty scary diagnosis - but I roll with the punches! So if you are smoking -- STOP. If you are running along a path and there are bushes on either side of the path - LOOK OUT FOR SPIDERS and SPIDER WEBS! If you run into a web - you could trip and fall (like me) and skin your knee. No matter how old we are or where we're at in life, we are often tempted to think it's “too late.” “Too late” to change the direction of our lives – whether that's personally or professionally. “Too late” to repair the damage we've done in a relationship. “Too late” to get right with God and end our final days well. There are a lot of biblical principles I could unpack to drive home just how irrational and patently false the “too late” mentality really is; but instead, I'd like to tell you the inspiring, hope-giving story of “Mom-Mom Em,” my maternal grandmother, Emma Lotter. She lost a daughter to suicide and a husband to Emphysema. She went into deep depression for more than a decade. When she finally came out of it, she was well into her senior years. Did she think it was “too late” for her to really start to live? Not hardly! This was a special episode for me to record and I think you'll like it.
On Christmas Day 1995, Dean Martin, nicknamed the “King of Cool”, died at the age of 78, leaving behind a five decade legacy in music, movies, and television. Dean Martin started life in the limelight as a crooner in local bars and clubs, but quickly shot to international stardom as a singer, releasing over 30 albums, and even knocking The Beatles off the top spot in the charts with his hit rendition of “Everybody Loves Somebody Sometimes.” He started his acting character as one half of the comedy duo, “Martin and Lewis” with Jerry Lewis, but after 10 years he cut ties and decided to go it alone. He subsequently starred in more than 40 movies, from Westerns with John Wayne to Oceans 11 with Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Junior, with whom he would join forces in movies, on stage and television. The press dubbed them “The Rat Pack”. Dean went on to host his very own TV show, “The Dean Martin Show”, which earned him a Golden Globe award for Best Male Television Star. But 50 years in the limelight took its toll on this popular entertainer. He chain smoked his whole life and was a drinking man, even using alcohol as a prop for a convincing “drunky” stage persona. However, one tragic moment in 1987 would see Dean Martin's life unravel. During the last 8 years of his life his alcohol intake spiralled out of control and he became dependent on opioid painkillers. He died at the age 78 of respiratory arrest. As a lifelong smoker he developed Emphysema and later, lung cancer. However, world renowned forensic pathologist, Dr Michael Hunter doesn't think this is the whole story. He needs to delve deep into Dean Martin's records to discover whether there was, in fact, something else going on in Dean's body that contributed to his eventual demise.
Hey there future nurses!! Welcome to another episode of the Nursing School Podcast. This week we'll be discussing pathophysiology and patient teaching for Emphysema. Emphysema(COPD) is the third leading cause of death world wide according to the World Health Organization. Risk factors include: Smoking, indoor air pollution, and occupational exposure. COPD causes persistent and progressive respiratory symptoms including difficulty breathing cough and phlegm production. Early diagnosis and treatment including smoking cessation is needed to slow the progression of symptoms and reduce exacerbation. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or comments you'd like to share. I always enjoy hearing from students. Cynthia@NursingSchoolSimplified.com If you're enjoying this podcast please leave a review and share with other students. All my best, Cynthia

Vidcast: https://youtu.be/XVzwyLbLfiQ Exploding cigars are an old prank, but e-cigarette explosions aren't funny and can be devastating to an increasing number of teens. University of Utah surgeons combed the case records for 9 children's hospitals looking for e-cigarette-related injuries during the years 2016 through 2019. A total of 15 children 13 to 18 years were injured. Ten required hospital admission and 3 landed in the ICU. The catalog of injuries included facial burns, loss of teeth, thigh and groin burns, hand burns, eye injuries, and even a jaw fracture. Forty percent required surgery. Nationally, FEMA reported 195 e-cigarette fires and explosions between 2009 and 2016, and 29% of the victims suffered severe injuries. Why do e-cigarettes explode? They often contain often cheap lithium-ion batteries to power their heaters. When these batteries get banged around, they can explode and the e-cigarette becomes a flaming rocket. So add this explosion danger to lung damage and cancer generation making 3 good reasons for your teens and for you not to use these e-cigarettes. https://www.journalofsurgicalresearch.com/article/S0022-4804(22)00095-6/fulltext https://www.usfa.fema.gov/downloads/pdf/publications/electronic_cigarettes.pdf #ecigarette #explosions #batteries #lithiumion #cancer #emphysema

During these past 5 years, she has worked in hospice and received her certifications as a hospice and palliative care nurses aide and an end of life doula. Cassidy lives and works in Washington State and shares her story about what it was like to work in the healthcare system that was the epicenter for Covid-19 in the US. In 1981 the Federal Trade Commission of the United States issued a report to the American Congress that concluded health warning labels had little effect on public knowledge and attitudes about smoking. As a result Congress enacted the Comprehensive Smoking Education Act of 1984, which required four specific health warnings on all cigarette packages and advertisements. They are, as follows: SURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING: Smoking Causes Lung Cancer, Heart Disease, Emphysema, and May Complicate Pregnancy. SURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING: Quitting Smoking Now Greatly Reduces Serious Risk to Your Health. SURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING: Smoking by Pregnant Women May Result in Fetal Injury, Premature Birth, and Low Birth Weight. SURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING: Cigarette Smoke Contains Carbon Monoxide. May I suggest a fifth: SURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING: There is No Risk-Free Level of Exposure to Secondhand Smoke.

Author, and Investment Expert and Wellness Explorer Adiel Gorel speaks to bestselling author James Nestor in this episode of The Adiel Gorel Show. Discussing Nestor's fascinating book Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art we learn about the vital importance of breathing right. Find out how the ancients did it and why most of us are doing it wrong. Learn to breathe and chew correctly to overcome emphysema, panic attacks, lower infection rates (even COVID!), and dramatically improve health & wellness. Key Insights: In his book Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art, journalist and author James Nestor speaks about the importance of proper breathing and about how few people actually practice it. Conscious, continuous nasal breathing can resolve health issues and improve athletic performance. Breathing through the nose creates more pressure and helps slow down breathing. This means that the body inhales more oxygen. On the other hand, mouth breathing can mean lower blood oxygen levels. Choral conductor Carl Stough was an optimal breathing proponent who demonstrated how singers could manage better resonance and volume by using proper exhalation. He also helped emphysema patients get better. Ancient systems of breathing such as Pranayama and Sudarshan Kriya demonstrate that humankind has long been aware of the vital importance of proper breathing for health and wellbeing. The way we chew today is very different from the prehistoric hunter-gatherer communities, who would spend up to four hours a day chewing. Ancient skull remains show powerful skulls, big jaws and straight teeth, whereas modern humans have smaller mouths and consequently more breathing issues. Author, and Investment Expert and Wellness Explorer Adiel Gorel isn't just an expert in his chosen fields but also a storyteller who makes complex issues easily accessible. Tune in to his show where he addresses diverse issues with a single aim to improve quality of life. Have questions?
