#291: 2020 Reading Life and 2021 Reading Intentions

Welcome to What to Read Next Podcast! Today I have a solo show to share with you. I have a few fun announcements such as the show going on hiatus, a bit of what we are doing on Patreon and then I dive into my 2020 Reading Life and about my 2021 Reading Intentions.    MY 2020 READING LIFE As I start to look back at what a year it was, I ended up reading more books this year than 2019. However I read more novellas hence the larger number. I struggled at the beginning of the year to find my footing, then between April -August i was reading mostly for the podcast.  Back in September, I gave myself permission to read whatever I wanted.    A few fun discoveries… Audiobooks! My sweet spot is 8 to 9 hours for audiobooks. I tend to have good luck with YA and some short romances. Long audiobooks feel like a drag unless it’s Virgin River.  Indie Books/KU - For the past couple of years I have been reading exclusively traditionally published books and it was fine but not as satisfying as reading an indie book. There are risks that indie authors take that I don’t see in traditionally published books.  Scribd Subscription- This fall I started to use my Scribd subscription to catch up with ARCs via audiobooks. The algorithm is a hit or miss but overall it’s been a pleasant experience. I canceled this subscription in January 2021. Category Romance Books- This is the year that i discovered Category romance as a way to reach my goals while discovering diverse authors. Using my libraries more - For category romance and books that I may not have an ARC I have used my library to get kindle and audiobooks.   What are my intentions for 2021? I want to read 300 books in 2021 which means about 25 books a month.  I want my friends to pick what i  read next. I will be asking my Patreon community, fellow  book twins for recommendations.  I want to request less ARCs. I have about 80 ARCs in my queue to be read and to be honest for 2021 my goal is to read them all while avoiding requesting or downloading books  I want to listen to more audiobooks while at work I want to read at least 4 KU books each month  Go back and read Sweet Valley High or Babysitters Club book.  I want to read more diversely   My 2021 Paranormal project  I don’t want to request any physical books as I want to remove the clutter in my house.  Get rid of ARCs via little free libraries and perhaps sell books on Facebook    Series I want to start or finish: Virgin River  by Robyn Carr - I have to read book #10 - https://amzn.to/2WNHBKz Bridgerton by Julia Quinn - I have book 8 to read - https://amzn.to/38zqnGm Psy-changeling by Nalini Singh https://amzn.to/38TpGYP Guild Hunter series by Nalini Singh https://amzn.to/2MfwWXj Argeneau Series by Lynsay Sands https://amzn.to/3nSSt63 Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. Ward https://amzn.to/3nX5JGD Heartbreaker Bay series by Jill Shalvis https://amzn.to/3hkgmAX Malory Series by Johanna Lindsey  - https://amzn.to/38ESxQf PODCAST EPISODE MENTIONED Love’s Sweet Arrow   PODCAST HIATUS Please note, the podcast will be going on a short two months break this January and February, 2021. CHASING UNGULATE TALES, Ep. 2: Mule Deer Migration with Ellen Aikens

This week we're surfing the green wave! Seasonal mule deer migration is based on food availability. Deer move across the landscape to maximize their access to high-quality food resources. This week we're joined by migration ecologist Ellen Aikens of the Monteith Shop to learn more about Wyoming's mule deer populations and how they're challenged by drought, climate change, and energy development. 3:00 - Artemis's first guest to connect from overseas! Plus, moving to Germany during the pandemic 6:30 - Animal research: A generally rewarding endeavor with LOTS of challenges 8:00 A new scientist asks her peers/mentors, What's one of the most important fields to be savvy in? "GIS/remote sensing" comes up again and again 11:00 GPS collars let us see where an individual animal is going, year after year -- it's a bonafide jackpot of data. This field is called "movement ecology" 12:30 Marcia's sage advice: "Do what you enjoy doing until you don't enjoy doing it anymore. Then go do something else." 13:30 Sampling the field April-August to survey which plants are available and when. Documenting the seasonal change from green to brown was revelatory! Plus, KNOWING the place. 17:00 Dynamics in plant growth and seasonal transition influence how animals move 18:00 To study mule deer you need to become versed in the world they live in 20:00 "The green wave" - this idea that for deer and other species, young/emergent plant species are the most nutritious growth. That stage is staggered across an elevational gradient -- and this is the 'green wave' -- moving to find that nutritious feed 22:00 Most mule deer move from a low-elevation winter range to a higher elevation spring/summer range. This is colloquially called 'surfing the green wave' 24:00 Migration isn't a continuous line from Point A to Point B. Mule deer spend about 90% of their time on migration at stopover sites, foraging and eating 27:00 What makes a good stopover? It totally depends. Elevation plays a big role. They're generally places that are more lush than the surrounding area. 30:00 Fall migration: A combination of fleeing cold/snow, plus finding the lushest feed given the season... the "residual greenness" 33:00 Drought has an effect on how well mule deer can surf the green wave, which is shorter; Energy development also affects that migration 35:00 Mule deer in the West have high fidelity to their migration routes 38:00 Mule deer DO move through energy development sites... but they're not able to use those areas to the degree they would if there was no resource development there 39:00 A high-quality study would collect data BEFORE an energy project, DURING it, and AFTER reclamation 45:00 Being migratory is key for mule deer in the Wyoming Range. There ARE resident deer populations, but it's a small fraction (

Markets are expected to remain in the consolidation-mode, as investors watch out for key micro and macro-level developments through the week. During the truncated week, market participants would, first, eye the Reserve Bank of India's repo rate decision. The MPC, which is scheduled to meet on Oct 1, 3 and 4th, will announce its decision on the last day of the meeting. After a cut in the corporate tax rate by the Finance Minister, investors await whether or not the Central bank would change its stance and decide to cut short the rate cut cycle. Further, auto and cement sales data, for the month of September, would be released through the week, starting Tuesday, which could keep auto and cement stocks volatile. That apart, Infrastructure output for August, fiscal deficit for April-August period, and current account deficit and external debt for April-June quarter will be announced on Monday.  Moreover, Manufacturing PMI for September month will be declared on Tuesday while Services PMI for September will be released on Friday. Globally, investors would eye progress in the US-China trade talks. Delegations from both the sides are likely to meet on Oct 10 and any development ahead of it would be keenly watched. Besides, the movement of rupee against the dollar, Brent crude oil price movement and investments by FPIs and DIIs will also be watched. Given all these developments, analysts advise investors to adopt a stock-specific trading approach and focus more on the index majors for short term trades. For today, investors should keep an eye on Reliance Annual General Meeting. In what is probably the first for any major corporation, the resolution professional for Reliance Communications will chair and address the shareholders on Monday. The AGMs of Reliance Capital, Reliance Infra, Reliance Power, Reliance Home Finance and Reliance Communication are slated for Monday. Also, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), the online ticketing, tourism and the catering arm of the railways, is scheduled to launch its IPO on Monday. The IPO is entirely an offer for sale (OFS) where 2.01 crore equity shares will be put on the block. Trends on SGX Nifty were suggesting a quiet start for the domestic indices. On the global front, Asian shares were off to a cautious start on Monday as reports that the U.S. administration was considering delisting Chinese companies from the U.S. stock exchanges kept investors on the sidelines. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan slipped 0.11% while Japan's Nikkei shed 0.61%. On Wall Street, the Nasdaq Composite slipped over 1 per cent during the overnight trade on Friday, the S&P500 dipped 0.53%, and the Dow Jones closed 0.26% lower.  Back home, The S&P BSE Sensex lost 167 points or 0.43% to settle at 38,822 level while the Nifty50 index closed at 11,512-mark, down 59 points or 0.51%.
