To wrap up my seasonal winter reads I picked up The Family You Make by Jill Shalvis. This contemporary romance(?)/women's fiction(?) novel follows a fake dating situation brought on by a near death experience on the ski slopes in Lake Tahoe. I answer some of the book's discussion questions, break down the fight at the end and who I think was in the right and wrong, and bash on Jane's grandfather for his poor parenting skills.
What happens when you skip doing your chemistry homework so that you can read historical romance novels? You might not learn about the substances of which matter is composed, but if you are Jill Shalvis it just might set you up to become a bestselling romance novelist. What proof do I have (and man, I wish proofs were used in Chemistry and not just geometry so I could keep this comparison going)? Well, Jill is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author who has written more than fifty acclaimed, award-winning romance novels. She is a three-time winner of the National Reader's Choice Award and has been nominated for the RITA Award and for Romantic Times' Career Achievement Award. Her latest novel, The Family You Make was released on Tuesday, January 11th. How did she pivot from keeping track of debits and credits to being a bestselling novelist? What's so inspiring about living in a small town? What happened when her dog had a celebrity death match with a porcupine? What famous rock musician drops in from time to time to play at a bar in her small town in the Sierra Nevadas? Listen in to uncover the answers to all of these questions as well as learn which accomplishment Jill is most proud of (here's a hint, it has nothing to do with writing). Happy Listening!

After a long and unannounced break I'm back and better than ever with Jill Shalvis's Love for Beginners. This book follows Emma as she tries to make a new life for herself after waking up from a coma, which includes finding a new apartment, new boyfriend, and new job. I get sidetracked by my love of coma stories, question the pacing in this book, and celebrate the great female friendship between Emma and Ali.

We give love to a criminally underrated drama that features one of the best romances we've ever seen. A human allergy? A life-like robot in friend mode? A terrible disguise? This drama shouldn't work but it does, and we break it down as only romance writers can.K-skincare rec:Benton Snail Bee Ultimate SerumK-romanc author rec:Jill Shalvis

Welcome to What to Read Next Podcast! Today I have a solo show to share with you. I have a few fun announcements such as the show going on hiatus, a bit of what we are doing on Patreon and then I dive into my 2020 Reading Life and about my 2021 Reading Intentions. MY 2020 READING LIFE As I start to look back at what a year it was, I ended up reading more books this year than 2019. However I read more novellas hence the larger number. I struggled at the beginning of the year to find my footing, then between April -August i was reading mostly for the podcast. Back in September, I gave myself permission to read whatever I wanted. A few fun discoveries… Audiobooks! My sweet spot is 8 to 9 hours for audiobooks. I tend to have good luck with YA and some short romances. Long audiobooks feel like a drag unless it’s Virgin River. Indie Books/KU - For the past couple of years I have been reading exclusively traditionally published books and it was fine but not as satisfying as reading an indie book. There are risks that indie authors take that I don’t see in traditionally published books. Scribd Subscription- This fall I started to use my Scribd subscription to catch up with ARCs via audiobooks. The algorithm is a hit or miss but overall it’s been a pleasant experience. I canceled this subscription in January 2021. Category Romance Books- This is the year that i discovered Category romance as a way to reach my goals while discovering diverse authors. Using my libraries more - For category romance and books that I may not have an ARC I have used my library to get kindle and audiobooks. What are my intentions for 2021? I want to read 300 books in 2021 which means about 25 books a month. I want my friends to pick what i read next. I will be asking my Patreon community, fellow book twins for recommendations. I want to request less ARCs. I have about 80 ARCs in my queue to be read and to be honest for 2021 my goal is to read them all while avoiding requesting or downloading books I want to listen to more audiobooks while at work I want to read at least 4 KU books each month Go back and read Sweet Valley High or Babysitters Club book. I want to read more diversely My 2021 Paranormal project I don’t want to request any physical books as I want to remove the clutter in my house. Get rid of ARCs via little free libraries and perhaps sell books on Facebook Series I want to start or finish: Virgin River by Robyn Carr - I have to read book #10 - https://amzn.to/2WNHBKz Bridgerton by Julia Quinn - I have book 8 to read - https://amzn.to/38zqnGm Psy-changeling by Nalini Singh https://amzn.to/38TpGYP Guild Hunter series by Nalini Singh https://amzn.to/2MfwWXj Argeneau Series by Lynsay Sands https://amzn.to/3nSSt63 Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. Ward https://amzn.to/3nX5JGD Heartbreaker Bay series by Jill Shalvis https://amzn.to/3hkgmAX Malory Series by Johanna Lindsey - https://amzn.to/38ESxQf PODCAST EPISODE MENTIONED Love’s Sweet Arrow PODCAST HIATUS Please note, the podcast will be going on a short two months break this January and February, 2021. Piper Manning’s about as tough as they come, she’s had to be. She raised her siblings and they’ve thankfully flown the coop. All she has to do is finish fixing up the lake house her grandparents left her, sell it, and then she’s free. When a massive storm hits, she runs into a tall, dark and brooding stranger, Camden Reid. There’s a spark there, one that shocks her. Surprising her further, her sister and brother return, each of them holding their own secrets. The smart move would be for Piper to ignore them all but Cam unleashes emotions deep inside of her that she can’t deny, making her yearn for something she doesn’t understand. And her siblings…well, they need each other. Only when the secrets come out, it changes everything Piper thinks she knows about her family, herself…and Cam. Can she find a way to outrun the demons? The answer is closer than she thinks—just as the new life she craves may have already begun. This month we’re reading the genre of Chick Lit Romance. Does it exist and if so, what should it be called? Plus: The poor portrayal of library jobs in fiction, not being able to connect with people in novels who are desperate to get married, SEO (Search Engine Optimization), World of Warcraft romances, post-feminist fiction, picking books based on the cover, and more!
