Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing The Rubens over Zoom video!  Ivy League Records are thrilled to release 0202 – the exceptional fourth album by local legends, The Rubens! Loaded with effortless jams like ‘Live In Life’ (double Platinum, ARIA Song of the Year nominee & the fourth biggest Australian song of 2020 (ARIA)), ‘Time Of My Life’, ‘Heavy Weather’ & current single ‘Masterpiece’, with 0202 the band have fully transformed into an alt-rock/pop powerhouse and, for the first time, have self-produced an album that will have people re-evaluating what they thought they knew about The Rubens. By the time album opener and absolute belter ‘Masterpiece’ comes to an end, it becomes very clear that The Rubens have emerged inspired from all the twists and turns thrown at them in 2020 and injected a new energy into this incredible record. 0202, a forward thinking album for a backward year, sees The Rubens creating a sound that effortlessly dances across genres – alt-rock, rnb, pop and hip hop all collide into something uniquely their own. The band unexpectedly found themselves self-producing what would become their most “pop” sounding album so far, recording everything together in their friend’s Camden-based studio, a converted WWII communications building, simply known as The Bunker, with bass player Will Zeglis taking on the role of engineer. Together they built each track up, starting with drummer Scott Baldwin’s beats, piecing the whole thing together part by part. When they felt like they’d taken a song as far as they could on their own, they would send it on to one of three producers – Kon Kersting, Rob Amoruso or Eric J – depending on what the song needed and who they thought would be best suited to the track, to add extra production and mix the track. 0202 follows third album LO LA RU, which featured hits ‘Never Ever (feat Sarah)’ (Double Platinum), ‘Million Man’ (Certified Gold), ‘God Forgot’ (Certified Gold) and lead to sold out shows and a 42-date Arena tour supporting megastar P!NK. Their second album Hoops saw the band sell out headline shows at" Pavilion and Margaret Court Arena and included hits ‘Hallelujah’, ‘Cut Me Loose’ and of course the 4 x Platinum the hit title track, which topped the 2015 triple j Hottest 100, while their debut self-titled LP was home to ‘My Gun’ (Certified Platinum), ‘Lay It Down’ (Certified Gold), ‘The Best We Got’ and more fan-favourites. The Rubens are currently half way through their regional NSW album launch shows, and will kick off their official 0202 album tour from April – July, playing metro cities as well as regional venues across their biggest headline tour to date. The world around us, and the culture we live in has a massive impact on all of us unconsciously. The study of Semiotics can allow us to understand this by looking at how meaning is created and communicated, which is knowledge we can use to design more effective logos and brand identities. The origins of Semiotics lie in the academic study of how signs and symbols (visual and linguistic) create meaning. But now, it’s become a methodology for researching and analysing consumer behaviour and brand communications. On this weeks podcast Ian interviews consumer psychologist, Dr Rachel Lawes to learn more about Semiotics, and how it can be used when developing a logo and brand identity.Rachel is the author of Using Semiotics in Marketing, and is recognised as one of the original founders of commercial semiotics. Clear Water, Mountains On All Sides Lake Tahoe is a great place for a not-so-short roadtrip away on the weekend (7-8 hours from Southern California) and offers some of the best kayaking in the area. Dustin from That Adventure Life knows all too well how beautiful it is there and the adventures to be had. In this episode, Dustin goes over a perfect weekend itinerary: a kayak, via ferrata, and hike. Then, back in time for work on Monday! Or, for those outside of California, add this to your own itinerary and don’t go back to work on Monday!   At 1,897m, the water can get cold there (bring your skis!). So Dustin has mostly gone in April-July for the warmer months. It’s the best time for adventure and relaxing there. A Weekend Itinerary Kicking off the trip with kayaking, you can explore the lake launching from Sand Harbour. There are kayaks to rent here if you don’t have the kit. Cruising down the coastline is a wonderful drive, but with smaller parking spaces and busy location, Dustin recommends you get there early! The via ferrata seems the most exciting to me. The route up has some beautiful views, and some great stories. One talks of a tree with a ski bolted to it. Why? A skier once crashed there. But to have views over the lake after a day of kayaking on it seems beautiful. If you’re going to do it, choose the four hour slot! You have pine trees, mountain landscape and teal waters. To top it off, you can watch a beautiful sunset at Chimney Beach. What a perfect way to round off your trip. If you want to read more information, check out That Adventure Life’s articles, or check out their YouTube. --------------------------If you enjoy the show please subscribe/follow and share with a friend! If you really enjoy the show please check out our Patreon site here, starting from only £4 (that’s only a cup of coffee each month!). Leland Stolberg volunteered for military duty immediately after graduating high school, right after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was trained as a Radio Operator, and flew in that position on the C-46 aircraft on missions flying over the "Hump", resupply missions flown from Assam, India to China in support of American and Chinese forces. The mission was extremely hazardous because of enroute weather challenges and poor single-engine performance. Altogether almost 1700 American crewmembers were lost in this operation. Leland once had a very close call when his plane lost an engine. He went to the cargo area and dropped all of the 55-gallon fuel drums of cargo to lighten the plane enough for it to maintain altitude. From Wikipedia: The Hump was the name given by Allied pilots in the Second World War to the eastern end of the Himalayan Mountains over which they flew military transport aircraft from India to China to resupply the Chinese war effort of Chiang Kai-shek and the units of the United States Army Air Forces (AAF) based in China. Creating an airlift presented the AAF a considerable challenge in 1942: it had no units trained or equipped for moving cargo, and no airfields existed in the China Burma India Theater (CBI) for basing the large number of transports that would be needed. Flying over the Himalayas was extremely dangerous and made more difficult by a lack of reliable charts, an absence of radio navigation aids, and a dearth of information about the weather. The task was initially given to the AAF's Tenth Air Force, and then to its Air Transport Command(ATC). Because the AAF had no previous airlift experience as a basis for planning, it assigned commanders who had been key figures in founding the ATC in 1941–1942 to build and direct the operation, which included former civilians with extensive executive experience operating civil air carriers. Originally referred to as the "India–China Ferry", the successive organizations responsible for carrying out the airlift were the Assam–Burma–China Command. (April–July 1942) and the India-China Ferry Command (July–December 1942) of the Tenth Air Force; and the Air Transport Command's India-China Wing (December 1942 – June 1944) and India-China Division (July 1944 – November 1945). The operation began in April 1942, after the Japanese blocked the Burma Road, and continued daily to August 1945, when the effort began to scale down. It procured most of its officers, men, and equipment from the AAF, augmented by British, British-Indian Army, Commonwealth forces, Burmese labor gangs and an air transport section of the Chinese National Aviation Corporation(CNAC). Final operations were flown in November 1945 to return personnel from China. The India–China airlift delivered approximately 650,000 tons of materiel to China at great cost in men and aircraft during its 42-month history. For its efforts and sacrifices, the India–China Wing of the ATC was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation on 29 January 1944 at the personal direction of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the first such award made to a non-combat organization.

Listen Money Matters - Free your inner financial badass. All the stuff you should know about personal finance.

Just like produce, a lot of what you buy has a season.  If you know what’s “in season” you can save a lot of money.  We’ll find out when to buy what. Kitchen Appliances:  According to Money Crashers, September and October because that’s when new models come out.  Last year’s version will be reduced.  This point will be a recurring theme in the episode.  And it’s not like from year to year there are great innovations in refrigerators.  Getting last year’s model doesn’t mean you won’t have the new fridge that makes you toast or anything.  You aren’t missing much but overpaying. Automobiles:  From Auto Trader, the end of each year  and the end of every day.  Sales people are hustling to get that last sale in before the numbers come out so they’re more flexible.  Also late summer/early fall when the new models come out. Computers:  PC World suggests buying around the holidays and back to school time. Gaming Systems:  Since everyone wants these as holiday presents, lifehacker suggests January.  Your disappointed kid will hate you but you have more to add to his college fund! Airline Tickets:  There are a lot of theories about this, buy on Tuesdays, buy last minute, but CheapAir ran the numbers and found that buying fifty four days before the trip is optimal.  They monitored four million trips to cull this data! Concert or Event Tickets:  Thanks to lifehacker again, see movies during the day, for things like concerts or sporting events, the closer to the date the better to go on Craigslist to find people who really need to unload them. Televisions:  From Popular Mechanics, the usual suspects, holidays, January, but interestingly, March.  Know why?  Andrew and Matt hate sports but I’m a fan so  March Madness Baby!   July also because sales are typically slow. Furniture:  According to Go Simple Finance,  January and July.  New furniture is released in February and August.  No one knew that but LMM found out for you! Engagement Ring:  US News tells us when not to buy, between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day.  Unlike most of our other examples, rings are not cheaper when everyone is buying them. Gas:  According to Time Magazine, Wednesday morning.  Station owners price check each other between 8-10 am.  If competitors are increasing prices, owners will raise their own between 10-12.  Weird, but that’s Time’s take on it. House:  From Realtor.com, for more choices, April-July because that’s when a lot of homes are being listed.  If you want the lowest price, between Thanksgiving and the New Year.  No one wants to move in the winter so that makes sense. April - July 2011 | Cerro Gordo Temple | Santa Fe, NM The Sutra that Vimalakirti Spoke is a two-thousand-year-old sacred text that is startlingly strange. Vimalakirti is a bodhisattva lying on his sickbed and isn't the whole point of enlightenment to elevate someone beyond the limitations and sorrows of ordinary life? But Vimalakirti doesn't seem to want to be elevated; he says, "I am sick because the whole world is sick." The implications of his explanation, which is also an expression of love and a vow, reverberate throughout the text. In a series of talks given in 2011, we take up this story of a deeply awake householder who explored the very agonies and beauties of human life we're still talking about today. This is a somewhat unorthodox vision of the Vimalakirti sutra, focusing on its radical allegiance to life and to healing the human heart. [URL:https://www.amazon.com/Vimalakirti-Awakened-Heart-Commentary-Pilgrims/dp/0991356934:Vimalakirti & The Awakened Heart] (2016) is an excellent accompaniment for these recorded talks (PDF transcriptions not available)
