Key words: Premiership Rugby, Northampton Saints, Six Nations, British and Irish Lions, England, Sports, Family, BLM, Leadership, The Centre for Social Justice (CSJ)In this episode we are joined by one of rugby's finest international players: Northampton Saints legend, British and Irish Lion and former England Captain Courtney Lawes. When Courtney decided to retire from international rugby after last year's World Cup, there was some shock – not least because he was still in the form of his life. But the Dad of four was clear that the time had come to be at home with his young family, not on tour or training with his England teammates. That belief in the importance of family is central to Courtney. Having seen up close how life can go wrong without that stable background, he is a passionate supporter of the Centre for Social Justice and their work promoting the importance of family and the value of sport. Serious injuries, a result of Courtney's uncompromising style of play, have led to long periods on the sidelines. The uncompromising opinions that he holds off the pitch have brought vitriol on social media, most famously when he dared to offer a view around Marcus Rashford's campaigning. His resilience in those difficult moments, on and off the pitch, is just one of the revealing and useful discussions we have in this episode. My thanks to Courtney for joining me.Full transcript available here:https://www.crisiswhatcrisis.com/podcasts/courtney-lawes-on-facing-down-the-haters-fighting-for-family-values-and-refusing-to-take-the-knee/Links https://twitter.com/Courtney_Lawes https://www.instagram.com/bigcourts89/https://www.instagram.com/p/C3Cq4f7M4w6/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link Stream/buy ‘Allies' by Some Velvet Morning: https://ampl.ink/qp6bmSome Velvet Morning Website: www.somevelvetmorning.co.uk Your Daily Practice: Sleep by Myndstream: https://open.spotify.com/track/5OX9XgJufFz9g63o2Dv2i5?si=b2f9397c92084682 Host – Andy CoulsonCWC team: Jane Sankey, Louise Difford, Zach Ellis and Mabel Pickering With special thanks to Ioana Barbu and the brilliant people at GlobalFor all PR and guest approaches please contact – podcast@coulsonpartners.com

Henry Purcell's “fantasias” are regarded as some of the finest and most intricately wrought examples of the fantasia, due to their profound embrace of counterpoint and great command of the polyphonic techniques of the time. Composed in the summer of 1680 – a time when the fantasia was already considered old-fashioned and had been replaced by the sonata –, Purcell's “fantazias” turned out to be the very last ensemble fantasias to be published in England. As John Holloway notes in his detailed liner text contextualizing the three- and four-part works, “it is tempting in retrospect to see their brilliant distillation of the very best of Byrd, Lawes, Jenkins and Locke as a personal farewell to a kind of music, which in Purcell's own chamber music would soon be superseded by sonatas”.Help support our show by purchasing this album at:Downloads (classicalmusicdiscoveries.store) Classical Music Discoveries is sponsored by Uber and Apple Classical. @CMDHedgecock#ClassicalMusicDiscoveries #KeepClassicalMusicAlive#CMDGrandOperaCompanyofVenice #CMDParisPhilharmonicinOrléans#CMDGermanOperaCompanyofBerlin#CMDGrandOperaCompanyofBarcelonaSpain#ClassicalMusicLivesOn#Uber#AppleClassical Please consider supporting our show, thank you!Donate (classicalmusicdiscoveries.store) staff@classicalmusicdiscoveries.com This album is broadcasted with the permission of Crossover Media Music Promotion (Zachary Swanson and Amanda Bloom).

In this special LIVE episode of Looking Outside, recorded at the Insights and Innovation Exchange event in Texas, we look more closely at the symbols and signs that surround us, the study of Semiotics, with semiotician, author and marketer, Dr Rachel Lawes.Rachel blends her 20 years in Market Research and her academic training as a Social Psychologist, with a focus on how people communicate through the study of semiotics. Rachel describes this as looking more deeply and critically at what is at face-value, and how that can help us make more deliberate decisions.Stressing this point, Rachel says that semioticians can very easily become theoretical or academic; in essence become enamored with the art of hypothesizing what things mean, and often forget that that all this theory needs to be actionable to inform business strategy. Having authored two books on the topic that explore semiotics in the marketing and retail landscapes, Rachel speaks to how semiotics can help give brands a competitive advantage by paying attention to what is often missed. Rachel describes this as the unique tipping point from natural observation, which everyone does in noticing what is obvious, to looking at what's not said and seen and what that tells us.Jo and Rachel also discuss the importance, for those of us in the job of observation, to catch when we're over-analyzing things, because over-studying something can be dangerous, and what's critical is to remind ourselves about what is truly represented and representative of human culture.--To look outside, Rachel travels. This allows her to get a little uncomfortable and gain exposure to new experiences and people she wouldn't otherwise have had.--Dr Rachel Lawes is a semiotician and marketer, and one of the original founders of British commercial semiotics. Through Lawes Consulting Ltd, established in 2002, she supplies semiotics to brand owners, ad agencies and marketers around the world. Her specialties include pharmaceuticals, banking and aviation, as well as everyday consumer goods.Rachel is author of two ground-breaking books on the business applications of semiotics. ‘Using Semiotics in Marketing' (2nd edition published in 2023) is the first book to set out a step-by-step course in semiotics for marketers and market researchers. Her other book, ‘Using Semiotics in Retail', is the winner of the Sales & Marketing category of the Business Book Awards 2023.Rachel's PhD is in social psychology. 'I'm not going to live to be 10,000 years old, so I'd rather just write material that someone's actually going to use. So top-down writing works for me because it's a very economical way to write." Dr Rachel Lawes is the world's leading expert in semiotics and its application in the realm of marketing. (If you have no idea what that means, don't worry: I asked her for the 'explain-it-like-I'm-five' introduction and she did it brilliantly.) But as well as taking in psychology, human behaviour, cultural dynamics, and the examination of societal constructs, we talk in gritty detail about her writing process. Rachel's straightforward and 'economical' top-down approach, together with her obvious delight in taking on a book-sized project ('The best bit about writing is reading... Your only job is to read your heart out for four months and write about what it makes you think about the world. What a treat.'), makes for an even-more-than-usually practical and inspiring episode. Get the kettle on and grab a notepad and pencil...

Girl 2 rejoins Girl 1 for episode 12 of season 8. There's Something About Mary as G2 is back from a grind of a week commentating for the Ontario STOH and Tankard provincial championships. She dishes about the host town, the venue, the event, the people, and her commentary colleagues, plus the sights, sounds and observations from a great seat in the house. The Girls also discuss the no-tick rule before dissecting the results in Port Elgin, which are followed by mention of a real-life flashback: a COVID case, which prompted a competing team to withdraw. Deborah Lee-Talbot exposes the political agency of Indigenous women in British New Guinea, through a photograph of the Papuan Geua, taken in the 1880s. In her European 'Mother Hubbard' dress, and necklace made of local shells, Geua's status as a powerful, 'Big Woman' of Papua New Guinea is without question. A politically motivated Indigenous intermediary, she collaborated with the British missionaries and explorers that visited Port Moresby during the late nineteenth century, when the island was known as British New Guinea in the British Empire. Geua' prominence is evidenced by her repeated presence throughout the London Missionary Society's (LMS) archives, photographed by the likes of George Lawes. Her images serve in part as mission propaganda for European audiences, revealing what it was like for religious missionaries in the tropical Pacific region. Yet rereading Geua's photograph from her perspective challenges the idea of Papuans' evolution as Christians, exposing Geua's own agency as an Indigenous woman, and her critical role in bridging two distinctive cultures - as well as the unique role colonial photographs play today. PRESENTER: Deborah Lee-Talbot, doctoral candidate in Australian-Pacific and archival history at Deakin University, Australia. ART: Indigenous Intermediary Geua in ‘Photographs Mainly of Port Moresby', George Lawes, (1880s). IMAGE: 'Geua'. SOUNDS: Blue Dot Sessions. PRODUCER: Jelena Sofronijevic. Click here to subscribe to the New Leaf Nutshell, to get your weekly round up of Episodes, tips, tricks, tantrums and more --> https://newleafpodcast.substack.com Jessica Lawes, mum of 4 and co-founder of @themumclub, joins me on Series 3, episode 6 of the new leaf podcast. Jess co-founded the mum club with her friend Lauren Webber back in 2016, after a fair bit of mutual frustration that there weren't really groups for women that were mum, rather than baby focused. The mum club is therefore a community for women to meet up all over the UK to discuss all things motherhood, but in a much more woman-centric way… Through a franchise model, they curate local events and provide a nation-wide online experience, as well as providing offers and discounts - making it a lot easier for mums to make other like-minded mum friends that in their words, value ‘who you are' rather than ‘what you are' as a mummy. Of course, for fans of the podcast who know me and what I'm about, hopefully it's nice and clear to see why I wanted to get jess on! Anything that is woman-focused when it comes to the juggle and struggle of motherhood gets my vote any day of the week, and the mum club was no exception. Jess's journey through motherhood and career has been quite different to my other guests, with babies coming first and career later, at absolutely zero detriment to her success. She was pregnant with her first at just 21, making her pretty young by modern standards where the average age to begin our motherhood journeys is nearly 10 years later at 31 years old in the UK being when most ladies have their first babies. As a result, it means Jess has now completed her family just when lots of other ladies are beginning theirs - with four beautiful children under her belt and still so much youthful energy to do what she now does. Jess's family setup is definitely a bit different to most people, but it was clear to me that this setup has had a really positive influence on both her motherhood and professional experience and has massively encouraged her passion for wanting to create this incredible community. Jess's husband happens to play rugby for England, and to me it seemed clear that this has given her invaluable first hand experience of the value and power of the ‘village' through incredible female friendships, which I have no doubt must have really influenced the birth of the mum club. To be in that world, Jess describes the very unique and shared experience of having their partners away on tours, where they are doing a stressful and physically demanding job, and are also under scrutiny from press as well as under constant pressure to perform. Motherhood can be challenging at the best of times, and Jess talks in the episode about how incredibly supportive and vital it was to her to have other girlfriends and wives going through the same thing as her - where they could pick up the phone and share the highs and lows of that life with immediate understanding of what they were all going through! And so actually, we all need this as mums, and Jess has geniusly recognised that, and capitalised on it. We all need our village, our someone to pick up the phone and moan to (or voice note, which is my main communication method of choice since being a mum), and also be ourselves with. Jess made me laugh out loud at multiple points in this interview - her unwillingness to join the ‘Cath kidston and pie-making' motherhood set (her words, by the way) as well as sometimes just needing a mimosa and babies kinda brunch I completely and utterly understood. She then combined this with an enviably laid-back approach to motherhood which was refreshingly different to how I am - and made her a truly intriguing guest! Jess and the mum club are definitely ones to watch. Introducing, the very glamorous and unimaginably mum of 4, Jess Lawes. We kick things off with the latest news from the Netherlands as the final spots for the Olympics are up for grabs with the mixed doubles field finalized and the men's and women's divisions down to the wire. Meanwhile, the world mixed doubles qualification event and the Continental Cup were both cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions and the guys discuss if this is a sign of things to come. Kevin also recaps the Canadian senior championships as Sherry Anderson captured a fourth consecutive title on the women's side. Speaking of the Netherlands, our Hot Rock Topics this week discusses the controversy over an on-ice sponsor that led to some broadcasters not airing the Olympic qualification events until a change was made. This week's Mailbag question asks how the WCF's new test rules would affect the recreational game and Warren explains why keeping it simpler at the club level is better. Warren also reminisces about the time he was summoned to “Curler's Court” in Scotland during Storytime. Two-time Olympic gold medallist Kaitlyn Lawes, who plays third for Jennifer Jones, joins the show as she prepares for a third consecutive Winter Games. Lawes talks about how it's been since winning the Canadian trials, her biggest takeaways from previous Olympic experiences, how she prepares mentally for big games, how they're truly a five-player team with alternate Lisa Weagle and why she believes it's the future of the sport. Lawes also takes a look at the rest of the Olympic field and having the right support staff in place for Beijing.
