Learn how by mid-December, 1776, the American Revolution was in desperate straits.  Explore that after a series of defeats, the American Army had retreated through New Jersey and was stationed in Pennsylvania — with the British Army across the Delaware River. The Continental Army was on the verge of utter collapse. Overconfident, the British went into Winter Quarters.  Congress gave George Washington enormous authority, and Washington used the lull in fighting and his new power to reorganize and strengthen his troops.  Washington and his officers designed a daring attack on Hessian forces in Trenton, New Jersey. Before the battle, Washington inspired the troops through the reading of Thomas Paine's American Crisis. Follow Washington's troops through the winter storm, the crossing of the nearly frozen Delaware River, an arduous march, and the pitched battle. The fate of the new nation depends on it. Through divine intervention, Washington was able to mount a surprise attack on the hated Hessian troops in Trenton, winning an improbable victory, which became a critical turning point in the war. The characters for the most part are British officers. Lord Strathern sends for his daughter Lady Mabel Stewart presently in Scotland to join him in Elvas where he has stationed his brigade for the winter. The debonair Colonel l'Lisle is the hero of our story. The author provides a vivid look into the landscape, history and people of this era and often touches on liturgy...sometimes controversial among the characters. In the process of making a work of art, the artist deals with many questions and decisions. There is a constant evaluation of asking if the piece is on the right track and considering what is needed for the next move. What will best convey the artist's ideas and intentions? Many of these decisions are quick and intuitive, but sometimes a more reflective and conscious process is called for. You need a balance between intuition and more conscious analysis to produce consistently good work. Both are important—you don't want to be constantly stopping and picking apart every move, that is paralyzing and over thinking. But without applying some objective evaluation of your work every so often, your work will be all over the place. Sometimes you hit on a good result, but it is harder to do that consistently without a deeper look. A lot this is analysis is thoughtfully but quickly, with just a short amount of consideration. This process borders on intuition because it feels that you just know what to do, although that knowledge may need a moment of looking to see what to do. But there's another level that takes more time. This is an actual step by step process you can go through to analyze your work either when you are close to being done, or deciding if it's done, or at any time along the way that you feel stuck. It involves close observation of your work in several ways. The first is an objective, descriptive look at the form of the work, observations about what you see in the use of the visual elements and composition. Next is subjective interpretation based on your ideas and intentions, and finally, how do the form and content work together? It is helpful to do this in written form to help your focus. This basic exercise is taught in art school as a way of observing the alignment of form and content. After a while the practice gets ingrained and a basis for making choices about how you use the visual elements and composition to express what you want to say. Kane, who left his home in February 1858 and set out for Salt Lake City.  His self-imposed mission was to stop the Utah War.  His plan was, as his wife Elizabeth later wrote, was somewhat hazy:  “Tom's plan was to go in disguise to Utah by way of California, winter though it was, and make his unexpected appearance at Brigham Young's very gates, relying upon his own mental force and Young's knowledge of the sincerity of his goodwill to the Mormons. He actually intended to turn a whole people's will and make them ask for peace in the hour of their triumph.”  But before he could get to Brigham Young's gates, he first had to pass through the towns of Los Angeles and San Bernadino. At the time, both these towns were hornet nests of anti-Mormon frenzy.  On this episode, we recount:  o  How Thomas Kane assumed the identity of "Doctor Osborne," and came up with a cover story about needing to get to Utah to collect specimens of western flora. We recount how (somewhat ham-fisted) effort at undercover work.       o  Just how dangerous Los Angeles and San Bernadino were for Latter-day Saints in 1857 - 1858.  For background, we recount the (mis)adventures of William Wall, who passed through San Bernadino on his way home to Provo from a mission to Australia.  He was pursued by a lynch mob, but managed to evade them twice. But he had a final confrontation as he prepared to leave the City.  We recount how, as William Wall was surrounded, he bore a "powerful testimony of the Gospel."  Then, he bore a different kind of testimony with what he called a "splendid double-barreled shotgun" and a "good Bowie knife," impressing upon the mob that some of them would die along with him.     o The Vigilance Committee of San Bernadino's efforts to hunt the mysterious "Doctor Osborne."    o How Kane saved from the violence of the Vigilance Committee by Frances Swan Clark and Colonel Alden Jackson.  To learn more about the stories in this episode, please check out these (excellent!) sources:     o  Ardis A. Parshall, "Frances Swan Clark: A Kindness Remembered," essay posted 18 May 2008 and last visited on 6 November 2022, http://www.keepapitchinin.org/2008/05/18/frances-swan-clark-a-kindness-remembered-redux/.  I came across Parshall's essay in MacKinnon, At Sword's Point, Part 2 Chapter 7, n. 34, so thanks to both Parshall and MacKinnon!   o For the materials and sources in this story, we owe a special thanks to Utah War historian William "Bill" MacKinnon - His two-volume set, "At Sword's Point: A Documentary History of the Utah War to 1858" is an extraordinary resource for anyone interested in learning more about the Utah War. Hello, world! We're so glad to be back in Winter Quarter with a new episode for you all. We thought it would be fun to just chill and chat about the things that got us through 2021, what we did over winter break, New Year resolutions, and exciting things to look forward to in 2021. So, grab your favorite warm beverage, snuggle up with a blanket and/or fluffy creature, find a journal if you want to scribble along, and hang out with us as we (in true SU fashion) reflect on last year and the year to come. As mentioned in the episode, here are some links to works by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as well as some resources from the Black Lives Matter movement. We're continuing our Black History Month discussions with Dr. Newell Bringhurst.  We'll talk about Warner McCary, a very colorful character in the story of the priesthood and temple ban on black LDS Church members.  Warner McCary, a former slave, was instrumental in causing Brigham Young to re-think ordaining black men to the priesthood. His interracial polygamist sealings to white women infuriated church leaders. Dr. Newell Bringhurst describes these explosive charges, "stranger than fiction...You can't make this stuff up!" Newell:  I just finished writing a review of [Angela Pulley Hudson's] book, which is outstanding.  It stands as the definitive study of Warner McCary and the woman he married which is Lucy Stanton, who comes out of a Mormon background. These two—I assume you've read the book. GT:  I have read the book.  One of the things I just wanted to point out there was, there has been a lot of statements that said he was an escaped slave, but in that book it actually said that he was a freed slave. Newell:  Not really.  He never achieved his freedom.  That was one of the things he was always afraid of.  That's why he assumed an Indian persona because he was always under the shadow of the Fugitive Slave Act as a runaway black slave.  He was always in fear that he would one day be rounded up and sent back to the South.  That was one of the things that contributed to him as masquerading as an Indian.  He performed as an Indian.  He even adopted Indian names.  He adopted the name Okah Tubbee.  That was the name that he used most.  He would do these Indian dances and everything else. So he goes to Nauvoo and according to the sources available, he meets and marries Lucy Stanton who is a divorced mother of three.  Anyway, they get involved with their Mormonism and they actually go back to Cincinnati and they are involved a little bit with the Strangites and they are involved in trying to form their own little Mormon group there in Cincinnati.  That doesn't quite pan out, those two's efforts sort of peter out. The next place he goes to is Winter Quarters.  He tries to convince Brigham Young that he's Indian.  He emphasized Indian-ness, but Brigham Young isn't completely convinced.  What really infuriates Brigham Young and Mormon leaders there is when he founds his own schismatic movement. He and his wife found his own schismatic movement.  Part of the ritual is for him to have sexual relations with the women who come in, who are white women, going to bed in three different times. https://youtu.be/zmHzMM3TwP8 That's not even the full story!  I hope you check out our conversation, as well as our previous conversations with Newell Bringhurst…..
