Back in 2008, Balcones was nothing more than an idea- an idea that all started in an old welding shop under a bridge. Helmed by Head Distiller and former Master Distiller of the Year, Jared Himstedt, Balcones became the first Texas whisky maker since prohibition, and in 2009 they began making tasty, tasty whisky. Now, smack in the middle of Waco, their 65,000 square foot facility is a shining beacon for whisky lovers everywhere.

Bob Quillin and Karthik Gaekwad are on the Oracle developer relations team. Karthik has been on Ruby Rogues previously, and he explains how he went from the Kubernetes team to developer relations. They begin the show by explaining what Kafka is, the leading open-source event streaming platform that Oracle is compatible with. It allows cloud developers to build, publish, and subscribe models for streams of records in addition to many other functions. Systems that used to take a long time to make have become very small and simple with Kafka. Kafka stands out from other message queueing systems because of its robust nature and scalability.  Bob goes into more depth about the evolution of Kafka and the panel discusses some different use cases, concluding that Kafka works best for projects with a large amount of data coming in and for making real-time decisions. Bob and Karthik talk about other things Kafka can do beyond the message queue, such as building streams from specific patterns. They talk about when you should consider moving over to Kafka. Karthik talks about how to get started with Kafka. One of the best ways to do this is to set up a service with Oracle and to just play around with it, which won’t cost you much if you aren’t pushing a lot of data through it. Bob and Karthik talk about some of the features offered by Oracle and Kafka. While the offerings are somewhat vanilla, you get the advantage of it being an open-source driven service on top of a cloud that’s highly secure, available, and built to last. The panel discusses security within Kafka. They talk briefly about the framework Karafka and tools and resources available through Oracle for Kafka. Systems that used to take a long time to make have become very small and simple with Kafka. Kafka stands out from other message queueing systems because of its robust nature and scalability.  Bob goes into more depth about the evolution of Kafka and the panel discusses some different use cases, concluding that Kafka works best for projects with a large amount of data coming in and for making real-time decisions. There are supposedly some "smoky" American whiskies.   But there's only ONE "Slap-Your-Ass-and-Call-You-Sally" smoky American whiskey.   That one is made in Waco, Texas.   In this episode of Beast Masters Club Podcast, Winston Edwards from Balcones Distillery sits down with The Beasts to celebrate Balcones' 10th Anniversary.

In the first of this week's two episodes of WhiskyCast, we'll travel to Sweden to look at two of the country's whisky distilleries. Mackmyra is Sweden's oldest distillery...even though it's only 15 years old, and matures its malts in a former mine 50 metres underground. The Box Distillery has just released its second single malt four years after beginning production in a former power plant, and both releases sold out within hours at Sweden's state-run liquor monopoly. In the news, Chip Tate has accepted a buyout offer from Balcones Distillery's majority owners and has left with plans to start his own distillery in Waco, Texas, but there remains a great deal of bitterness between the two sides. We'll have more on this story in this week's bonus episode. Former Bruichladdich managing director Mark Reynier is back in the whisky business after working out a deal to buy a former Guinness brewery in Ireland and convert it into a distillery, and the Beam brothers have brought a new partner in to help grow their Limestone Branch Distillery in Kentucky.

Chip Tate of Balcones Distillery in Texas is winning even more awards for his whiskies, with two gold medals in the inaugural Spirits of the Americas competition. One was for his Texas Single Malt, and the other for a whiskey that Chip used to say he'd never make. He'll tell us about it on WhiskyCast In-Depth. Whisky Magazine announced its U.S. Icons of Whisky Awards this week in Louisville, and I was on hand for the ceremonies. Four Roses won Distiller of the Year honors for the second year in a row, and Balcones Distillery in Waco, Texas was named Craft Distiller of the Year. We'll hear from winners Jim Rutledge and Chip Tate. In the news, a French family-owned wine company has bought Tullibardine, ghost hunters search Buffalo Trace for spirits of the ethereal variety, and much more!

In the last episode, I mentioned the Balcones Brimstone blue corn whiskey from Balcones Distillery in Waco, Texas...and how the corn was smoked over Texas scrub oak. Turns out I was wrong, and there's an even more interesting story behind this whiskey and the distillery.
